Not to mention it helps sell faster. If you both have the same quality used product for the same price, but one had a box, everyone would buy that one.
The reason is because if you have the box, it kinda shows that you were its actual owner, and not someone trying to sell stolen goods. Purchase bills can easily be faked. Plus it shows you were responsible enough to store the box.
Bought my first gaming laptop ever 2 months back and now I just came across this video. Done most of the things listed in this video, but it's always nice to know why it's better to do them. Thank you so much for the informative video!

I am extremely happy to say that today I got myself Legion 5 Pro with RTX3070Ti (thanks to this channel I was pretty confident with my purchase). And of course the first thing I did was turning on this super useful video. Thanks a lot Jarrod!
@@JoseHerrera-ph1ns it is amazing piece of hardware, I am very glad with my purchase! On idle fans are barely audible, screen is bright, responsive and sharp, reading or watching high quality videos on it is a pleasure and of course when it comes to performance 5 Pro is a beast that can run cyberpunk 2077 with everything cranked up and ray tracing turned on ultra at around 40-45 frames inside the city (that's with DLSS balanced, if you choose Performance you get even more) and 50+ frames outside the city. Games like Control and God of War run stable 60 and you can run eSports titles it while getting full advantage of 165Hz screen. Cant say about new released games because they crap in terms of optimization so didn't even bother trying them.
Absolutely brilliant laptop line, I snagged a 2023 7i Pro model at a nice discount and it’s an absolute beast with a 13900HX CPU and an RTX 4080 GPU. The only con is short battery life, but that’s par for the course with all gaming laptops with these specs
tip for new laptop owners: Make sure to check for any offers etc. on free games and Xbox passes that might come with your laptop, but you might not have paid attention while purchasing.
Would also like to add: Get a family member to video you unboxing the laptop, examining it and then turning it on. This way no retailer can object to any damage by saying it was caused by you the customer.
I’m a software engineer myself and I do the exact same steps mentioned in your video. You’ve actually motivated me to start creating my own laptop reviews on UA-cam. Benchmarking new hardware always been a passion of mine. You do a great job of going through all important information that be helpful to the possible consumer. Any recommendations on starting UA-cam reviews? Also, what do you use for temp monitoring. A lot of apps out there. I’ve been using HWMonitor but doesn’t always detect AMD cpu temps. Thanks Jarrod!
We use hwinfo for temp monitoring. Good luck on the channel and understand that first 100 videos might suck but keep going anyway, its all practice and experience.
I followed his instructions as I got my new laptop and updated my intel graphics driver but while installing my screen turned black and it’s stuck on black screen I don’t know what to do :(
Checking the temperatures is a must. The one I bought came with a manufacturing defect, the CPU would take so much longer to cool down even after I've exited from the game, perhaps they forgot to apply thermal paste or something. Anyhoo, it's a must. Nice video.
mines been thermal throttling ive got my laptop on a rack to cool it down also limited to 4.2 ghz im gonna thermal repaste for christmas then it should be able to run 4.60 ghz again
@@Arif-nv9ukSorry for the late reply, you can check temperatures with HWiNFO64. Laptops tend to run hotter than desktops, but if your temperarutes are a bit higher than in reviews or CPU or GPU even thermal throttle under full load the temps are too high (let's say +95°C). Also, you can hear if the fan is just a little noisy or faulty, hard to describe but you will notice it.
Great guide Jarrod! I personally recommend enabling the "Hibernate" option in the power menu, as "Sleep" on Windows has been very inconsistent in keeping the machine asleep in my experience!
Thanks! Good point, we do that too and turn off fast start up + change the other power settings like how long the screen stays on, should have included it.
@@JarrodsTech if we used hibernate day by day, does it harm the ssd? It’s so annoying to turn on the laptop and have to open a lot of files end apps when i used shutdown. Sorry if i said it confusing
I always buy used for the low low price of $200. My first gaming laptop is the MSI GV62 8RD i5-8300H, GTX 1050 Ti, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD. I able to play Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord on the highest setting. I capped fps at 30. I just upload my mount archer video. It run smooth. The most important thing for me is heat. Since I don't know how to open up the laptop case to change thermal paste, I simply purchased the IETS GT500, a cooling pad with an industry turbine fan that completely seal the air inside for better circulation. It help dropped my temperature from 95c to 65c under heavy load.

Hi Jarrod Been meaning to thank you for your productive reviews! You condense your information & go “just deep enough” to grasp a reasonable understanding. Appreciate that Got myself the ‘22 Asus G14 a couple months back, and I found myself coming back to your reviews on multiple occasions when exploring options Keep up the good work!
hi, does your G14 trackpad have slight wiggle when slightly tapping/pressing (not clicking) on lower portion of it? or is it completely stiff and firm?
I have to agree about the stress test to measure temps. You honestly aren't going to see the same temps while you're gaming. I personally do it for fun, but I definitely agree it's not needed.

@@punitarora8664 It's a low tier gaming laptop with a low tier cooling solution, only thing you can do is look up the internet for solutions and making sure you understand each and every part of the process before applying them. What do u mean by high temps tho ? A cpu/gpu is made to work perfectly up to 100C (up to 115C in some cases) so if it doesn't throttle there is not much you can do (nothing)
Thank you so much for this video! I didn’t consider any of this and I’ve learned a lot. Me and my 9 year old Daughter are new to pc gaming she got her first gaming laptop this Christmas. She doesn’t know yet but I plan on doing all of this for her after she opens the box.
Hey, i would recommend doing all of this before and resealing it as best you can. There's nothing more magical than being able to instantly enjoy the Christmas present. And it will save about 3 hours over Christmas day if she wants it set up. The installs are getting more and more
This wave of videos have been INCREDIBLE HELPFUL , you not only do dedicate reviews but do tierlist , comparison , your tops , advices and even give us a webpage with great discounts putting together all the online stores in usa BUT in top of that you give us now a guide in how to setup the laptop that we most likely got after reviews, comparisons and discounts in november to have everything ready to just "press start" . Thank you so much , i can't stress enough how helpful you have been , with all these things in honest and personal videos. Mad Props! 💪😁
One more tip is before you actually connect to the internet and update the drivers, you might want to save the system image file using a software called macrium reflect and store it safely on a drive. I had watched videos and read on forums that if your laptop starts to feel slower to you after years, because of newer drivers which slow down the system you can reverse back your laptop to the exact state it was in to factory default, this is better than just regular factory reset of windows on your laptop ✨
Just bought my first gaming laptop (Legion 5i Pro) and have been watching a lot of your videos both in helping me pick the right one and how to set it up properly. Thanks for good guidance on both parts Jarrod!
Just got a new laptop, and as LTT has been annoying me for quite a while now, I'll be relying on your channel for things like this video. Honestly, I wish I'd found your channel sooner - you provide way more information in a good, digestable format. Easy to follow and understand, and not a bunch of "entertainment" bloat in the video. We're here for the information, so props!
I also actually recommend immediately doing a full PC reset (located in the computer settings)to wipe the computer and reinstall the OS. The last 2 gaming laptops I’ve bought needed a wipe before steam games would launch properly. No idea why, I tried many different things to fix that issue but a PC reset always worked. Takes about an extra 30 minutes to set up like that but it’s very worth it imo.

@@ACE112ACE112 that never happened in 15 years with any of my laptops i had and even for my friends. It shouldn't happen, might be some manufacturing defect.
It shouldn’t and wouldn’t happen because there’s no way manufacturers would purposely make it like that in modern times like 2022 - 2023 and the future. I have a gaming laptop and I have had it for a few weeks and this hasn’t happened
This is a great comprehensive list of valuable steps to take with practically any new laptop... I follow a very similar set of steps when I set up new devices for my clients. Keep up the great work!
I have been watching your videos for the past 4 years or so and I finally put this knowledge to work choosing the right gaming laptop for a friend. I have done all of the things you have mentioned in this video but still I am concerned about battery. To get the most performance you want the laptop to be plugged in but at the same time keeping the battery at 100% for too long may reduce its life in the long term. Any suggestion about that? I read about software to limit the charge but ultimately I just left it as it was. Anyway, the laptop is an HP Victus with a 5800H, 16Gb of ram, 1 Tb SSD, RTX 3060 and a 144hz 100% sRGB 300 nits screen. Got it for €1099 after a long time of searching for the best bang for the buck. I must thank you because I have learned a lot from your videos and the amount of detailed information you put in every review is super useful. Great job.
Some laptops like Lenovo/ASUS let you set the max charge level to 70-80% or so, not sure of a way to do that in Windows though. I ran a work laptop on 24/7 at 100% and after 3.5 years the battery was still fine, though this is of course anecdotal and just one instance.
Just got a legion 7 pro by watching your videos and waited a month for it. Now I'm setting it up and watching this video to optimize windows. Appreciate your videos and a big thanks 🙏
Thankyou for the tip on core isolation. I just switched it off and I'm seeing a boost of 30-40fps in Sons of the Forest. I cannot believe how much difference this has made!!
I'm not sure if you already reviewed this yet, I know you did a piece on cooling pads for gaming laptops, but I've been using the IETS GT500 and well, it's a beast. My Lenovo Legion 5 17.3 inch already has a good heat displacement system. Games like Elden Ring on all max settings on a normal cheap pad run between 68-73C according to MSI Afterburner monitoring, which is very respectable. However, with this pad, which runs up to 5,000 RPMs at about 40% power drops my thermals to about 56-62C. It also includes a cleanable dust filter which drastically reduces the need to open the panel for cleaning. The downside is it can be a bit loud, running up to 55db at max power but I never needed anything close to that. I feel as though this pad, although a bit pricy at $70, can make a substantial difference in the life span of gaming laptops and I'd be very interested in your thoughts on this device, as I know you are a supporter of cooling systems. There are also some models that include additional USB ports and RGB lightning, and as we all know by now from your reviews, RGB has a major impact on performance.
CPUs and GPUs are made to work perfectly at temps up to 100°C (115 in some cases), they litterally could run at those temperatures 24/7 and it wouldn't make a difference, but even then manufacturers are really conservative with the temps they allow (it's been criticized in a lot of occasions) because the one thing they absolutely don't want is for your computer to melt on your lap or to spark under normal usage. That's why thermal throttling exists. The only valid reason to worry about temps is if you overclock the heck out of the components, or game with the laptop on your lap, then I would advise to buy a 70bucks desk instead of a cooling pad that will effectively make your experience worse by being another thing to carry around. Anyway, temperatures have not been a concern for many years now, 73C is plenty of headroom, you just don't need a cooling add-on except if you are really concerned about noise, in this case a better solution would be to buy a 70bucks headset. This is really not something to worry about
@@THEDARKILLERS46 cooling pad helps (IETs ones) with the laptop lifespan especially if you live in a tropical country like me (I don't have air conditioning) because cleaning and repasting even with good thermal paste could only get you so far my old gaming laptop dedicated gpu died way too early than it should have because I don't use a cooling pad before. I learnt that the hard way
One thing you forgot to do, is to get a flash drive and back up everything before doing everything else (just in case something happens and you can boot up back to factory settings incase resetting doesn't work )
Another great review! Kudos for vouching for Windows Defender - as a "not so ordinary user" I completely agree that it became pretty good in the last few years (especially if one's playing fair and doesn't try to get f.e. games "for free" on torrents). As to the setup itself - I wish it would be that easy process for software developers :) It can easily take at least few days until everything is set up as it should be in our realm :) BTW I've used Chrome on my previous machine, but on my brand-new Lenovo Legion 7i I've decided to give Edge a try - now I know that technically it's pretty much the same browser under the hood since it's built upon Chromium engine, yet it does include some interesting features like putting unused tabs into a "sleep mode" when they don't really consume a lot of CPU and RAM (if at all) - after a month of using Edge in Windows 11 I don't have a need nor desire to install Chrome (mind you, I was using it for like 14 years or so).
This guide is absolutely on time .. My full AMD Legion 5 just arrived and i am having a blast with the Rx 6600 .. I was wondering about the Lenovo software if you have any tips to customize this laptop ... Also is there any way I can get more options for screen refresh rate as my only 2 options are 60 and 165hrz ... I would've liked to get a sweet spot option of 120hrz to match the frames in my games also it matches the screen actual response time
Wait, what? You do realize that this makes no sense, right? There's no such thing as a "sweet spot" when it comes to setting your screen's refresh rate lower than it's rated for. Are you trying to haul dirt with a Ferrari too? If you're trying to limit your screen (Ferrari) to accommodate for the speed of the game (dirt), that's effectively what you're asking for. Aside from some slight overshoot of the colors in having a faster monitor, there's no downside to having that overhead. And if removing that overshoot is the goal, I still wouldn't suggest lowering it "to the speed of your games". 144hrz, at least.
Didn’t watch this video, spent half a day figuring out why my Microsoft account wouldn’t log in or launch any games. Bios update and three hours worth of windows and Microsoft updates and it’s up and running, thank you!
I got my Lenovo LOQ and it is absolutely incredible, I am not one of those guys who needs 240 FPS on every single game I play. The games I do play I set it to ultra and get 144 FPS on this beast and it is perfect.
You do NOT need an internet connection to setup Windows 11 and, regarding creating a local account instead of being forced to create an online Microsoft account, there are two methods that aren't terribly hard that work currently (Microsoft hasn't countered them yet). This also is important if you want to save a completely clean system image prior to connecting to the internet and doing any updates, such that you have the ability to restore the laptop to true factory state or if you want to use the laptop without internet. I'm going to detail these methods below and will be overly-detailed to help those not as familiar with PC processes/menu systems. Both methods begin with the same initial steps: 1. During the initial Windows 11 setup where it wants to connect you to the internet and the screen you are on says "Let's connect you to a network", press Shift+F10 to bring up the command prompt. 2. Use your mouse to click inside the command prompt on the command so that you can type. (This didn't used to be the case, but it is now.) 3. Choose one of the two methods from here: Method One (a) 4a. In the command prompt type: taskmgr 5a. Press enter to bring up the restricted task manager window. 6a. At the bottom-left of this window click on "More Details" which will bring up the full task manager window. 7a. Scroll down to find "Network Connection Flow", click on it to highlight it, then click on "End Task" on the bottom-right of the task manager window. 8a. You'll see things happening in the background and the "Let's Connect You To The Internet" screen will change to the "Who's Going To Use This Device?" screen. 9a. Close the task manager window and the command prompt window by clicking the "x" on the top-right of their windows. 10a. Continue setup by making a local account on the computer. Method Two (b): 4b. In the command prompt type: oobe\bypassnro 5b. Press enter. The computer will restart and bring you back to the beginning of WIndows 11 Setup with "Is this the right country or region". 6b. Continue setup normally until you again reach the "Let's connect you to a network" screen but this time at the bottom-right you will see the option "I don't have internet". 7b. Click on "I don't have internet", which will take you to a screen that says "Connect now to quickly get started on your device" at the top and on the bottom-right you will see "continue with limited setup". 8b. Click on "continue with limited setup", which will take you to the "Who's going to use this device" screen. 9b. Continue setup by making a local account on the computer. Now, you can create a system image of the true factory state. I do this by connecting an external storage drive that has the install file for the free version of Macrium Reflect on it, transferring the install file to the new computer and installing it, then running it to create the system image on the external storage drive. Then you can connect to the internet, update Windows/drivers/etc. and create system images as desired during the update process. There are tutorials out there on youtube for Macrium Reflect use, so I am not going to go through those here. Jarrod, the above process could be good video content for you, as well as how to use Macrium Reflect to make backups. I hope this is helpful to someone!
Sensei! Thank you for that, I really appreciate the effort for it! Lenovo suck and prolonged my delivery for January but Im starting to prepare for arrival of my baby :D
11:34 - Important Note: If you plan on doing a clean install of Windows 11 make sure that you have a USB with the WiFi - adapter drivers installers for your laptop manufacturer as gaming laptops with have adopters that Windows 11 can't use until you copy over the driver installs and install them through the installer. Then you need to perform a restart and with the WiFi adapter drivers installed and working you will be able to connect the internet and get all the other important drivers/updates and programs. Otherwise your laptop will be a paperweight.
Here's a quick tip from me if anyone has a Acer Nitro 5 laptop (specifically one with an 5800H AMD CPU): you'll want to turn off boost clock for when your not gaming by activating the option in windows. This makes it way quieter, and barely affects performance outside of games. My fan speeds went from 2500 rpm at idle to 1500. It's way more tolerable this way.

Love the tips! Set up so many PCs and Laptops over the years that all of these tips became second nature to me and I'm sure you get me when I say it's crazy how efficient one gets at doing all of this stuff when it's you're in the 100s of time setting up a system from stock/first boot. I'm wondering though, do you not suggest/use anything similar to "Shutup10"? Windows has soooooo much bloat compared to Linux for example. Nowadays it's one of the first things I do. I just hit actions and click "apply recommended settings only" as those are simply telemetry services and none essential services that 99.9% of people do not and will never need. Probably doesn't make a huge difference but I have noticed improved boot times, and obviously precious system resources are freed up! Mainly I've noticed that systems stay fresh and snappy much longer, thus resulting in the need for a fresh install as windows based devices usually end up needing after a year or two of cluttering up. I see it suggested a lot in tech/hardware discords etc, never had an issue or any bugs arising from it except windows updates reverting the settings changed by it. Takes 20 secs to set them again though as it's literally 3 mouse clicks in total. Just wondering if you use it on personal rigs and would recommend it at all, or if you have any real thoughts on it or similar software.
I always re-install the OS and install the vendor-specific apps like their support utility and gaming control panel. I do keep MalwareBytes around as it is pretty lightweight and non-intrusive. It may also be not such a bad idea to stay in Win10. More games, including older ones, are tested and patched for it.
Not to mention with every major update Microsoft has shit the bed with Win11. There's always tons of bugs, performance issues, and other various issues.
@@rangerjoe126 truth cus my gaming laptop is from the year 2019 and i did install windows 11 once and it destroyed battery life. It went from 8 hours to just 3 for college work so went back to windows 10 asap inbthe 10 day period.
It's not a good idea to automatically skip BIOS updates. At times they will include a security update. It's best to read what is included in the update, before deciding to skip the install.
Not all companies actually list a proper changelog so you have no idea what they are doing in some cases. But yeah, honestly I think you underestimate how many people comment on my videos each day who are super paranoid and scared and paying "professionals" to update the BIOS for them, and as I say for most people I don't think it's worth the stress. The security updates in most cases are for local attacks anyway, often lower priority vs software security updates IMO.

Awesome video. I bought a new gaming laptop after having one for 5 - 6 years that wasn’t serving me anymore and was really struggling to play my favourite game: World of Warcraft. I decided to get the Lenovo legion 5 pro as it was cheaper than anything else I’d come across and seems to have really good reviews from user experience (and also from watching your videos I’ve been inspired to buy one!) and I just want to thank you for helping me properly set up a laptop in this way for the first time. My brand new Dell g16 2023 will arrive in few days and i wanted to be ready for that , you answered all i was looking for , thank you so much ! Subscribed 🤜
Great video! One thing I'll add is that during the Windows setup, you can actually skip the Microsoft account entirely whether you have Wi-Fi or Ethernet and Windows 11 Home or Pro. I would say to connect to the internet during initial setup just to save time later. When prompted to enter your Microsoft account, just type 'a' into both the username *and* password fields. It will tell you there was an error signing into your Microsoft account and it will prompt you to create a local account. No command prompt, no disconnecting from the internet, and no hassle.
Sometimes it is a hassle. If you do a clean install of Windows, the new Windows install may not have drivers for the network adapters of your computer. It literally will not let you do what you suggest as there's no network connection. It just gets stuck on the "Connect to a network" screen. In that case, you do have to run the command prompt and the OOBE command.
@@JJFlores197 Good point. I’ve found that Windows is pretty good at automatically finding drivers for stuff like that but it’s not perfect, especially if the PC is a custom build. It’s definitely not the most optimized setup.

One more tip is before you actually connect to the internet and update the drivers, you might want to save the system image file using a software called macrium reflect and store it safely on a drive. Some laptops like Lenovo/ASUS let you set the max charge level to 70-80% or so, not sure of a way to do that in Windows though. I ran a work laptop on 24/7 at 100% and after 3.5 years the battery was still fine, though this is of course anecdotal and just one instance.

This is really not something to worry about
I wonder why that is, that RBG lighting improves performance.
@@THEDARKILLERS46 cool
@@tomlocke3674 oh yeah big time. Check out Jarrod's video where he reviews cooling pads. No doubt a huge performance boost. I mean really big.

I learnt that the hard way
One thing you forgot to do, is to get a flash drive and back up everything before doing everything else (just in case something happens and you can boot up back to factory settings incase resetting doesn't work )
whats the recommended gb for the flash drive?
@Dark Ace Usually 32gb. You won't use all of that, probably not even close, but it's best to have more than what you need.

"New lappy wat do?" 😂😂😂
This guide is absolutely on time ..

Both methods begin with the same initial steps:
1. During the initial Windows 11 setup where it wants to connect you to the internet and the screen you are on says "Let's connect you to a network", press Shift+F10 to bring up the command prompt.
2. Use your mouse to click inside the command prompt on the command so that you can type. (This didn't used to be the case, but it is now.)
3. Choose one of the two methods from here:
Method One (a)
4a. In the command prompt type: taskmgr
Method Two (b):
4b. In the command prompt type: oobe\bypassnro

There's always tons of bugs, performance issues, and other various issues.
also win 10 is much lighter hardware wise if you have a pc older than 2020

Not all companies actually list a proper changelog so you have no idea what they are doing in some cases. But yeah, honestly I think you underestimate how many people comment on my videos each day who are super paranoid and scared and paying "professionals" to update the BIOS for them, and as I say for most people I don't think it's worth the stress. The security updates in most cases are for local attacks anyway, often lower priority vs software security updates IMO.
I don't even have any new laptops but I still like coming back to watch this over and over.
Hii
I admire people that are this good with computers 😮
I don’t know much about modern computers. The last computer I ever touched was running Windows XP.
How are you watching youtube right now then?

Step one: Delete McAfee
Basically. Discussed at 9:43
Why?
@@saalarkai4302eat alot of resources, like to cause false negatives and a bunch of bad stuff
@saalarkai4302 a virus would be better for your laptop than Northon or McAfee 😂 on a real note tho windows defender is better and enough for your laptop
"The first thing you want to do is get the laptop out of the box" Are you sure about that?
it helps
thank you. That tutorial was excellent for me as a first time buying a gaming machine. 5 stars for this channel
I’ve learnt so much from this 15 minute video than I’ve ever known about laptops in my whole life. Thanks again.
Thanks for making this video. I'm buying my first gaming laptop since using desktops for the past 30 years and I'm in need of all the help I can muster. ;)
Just got the same laptop ordered and this pops up, talk about perfect timing!
Clean installation graphics driver is something that I never did, thanks for enlightened me for this.
At last, I can apply the knowledge from this video, really waited for this moment 😊🎉
Just got my Lenovo legion 5 today, just the video I need thank you.
damn found this 3 years after purchasing a gaming laptop and decided to do a reset of windows greatly helped! Def Subbed!

I recently ordered an Asus ROG Strix G17 and am currently waiting for it to arrive this is the second time I've watched this video and will probably watch it again when I actually get it mainly cause you mention a bunch of stuff that I will probably do plus I'm brand new to Windows in general cause up till now I've been using Chromebooks from Acer and Lenovo and most of my friends are wanting to play specific games with me so I gave in and bought a Windows supported Gaming Laptop but as I said before I will probably come back to this video again when I actually get the laptop. Keep up the good content 👍

Thanks for the first tip about how gaming laptops don't turn on for the first time unless you plug the charger. I just bought a new laptop and it didn't turn on at first and I was quite worried about that lol. And also thanks for the video, great content as always
Amazing and clear instructions for the first steps for laptop.
