- 1993's Jurassic Park was an incredible cinematic experience both for the time and now. Combining the best of old school monster movie making with cutting edge CGI and blending those elements with a compelling narrative and characters it's considered one of Steven Spielberg's best and also one of the great blockbusters of all time. Mason doesn't really like it though. Anyways thanks for watching our Caravan Of Garbage review.

James and Mason were so preoccupied with whether they could be snarky about Jurassic Park, they didn't stop to think if they should.

They, uh, find a way.
That line has become a bit of a meme, but after recently reading the book, it's explained a lot more and it's actually quite a good point. In fact the character of Malcom in the book comes of as way smarter and less of a creep. He is described as a bit of the academia version of a rock star, but he is also the smartest guy in the room at any point in the book, by a large margin.
Highly reccomend the book, it's actually quite a fun read and has enough differences from the movie to make it a pretty much seperate story. The movie is more of an alternate take on the idea rather than a book to movie adaptation. The characters and general plot is shared but the specifics are very different and the story is told in a different way.
James is right, not feeling like you’re paid enough is a fine reason to commit horrible crimes.

I never considered the idea that the misspelled dinosaur names was a deliberate nod to the park being carelessly built. Way to tie in a nearly-30-year-old goof with one of the main themes of the movie!
I think James' mind just automatically fills these holes in because he's done that with many franchises including the Star Wars prequels and Bond films.

I mean if that park existed in real life today, the way it's depicted in the movie is *EXACTLY* how it would be. Big name brands and chains out the wazoo. I have no problem whatsoever with how the park is depicted in Jurassic World because....yeah, that's literally what it would be like if it was a real thing in the 21st century.

Amazing how fun and iconic Samuel L. Jackson and Wayne Knight can make sitting in offices typing on early 90s computers.

7:00 point of contention, that is a *real* system being used for the parks that existed at the time. It was a kind of experimental 3D proto-VR UNIX system navigator that had recently been developed. And yes, it was ludicrously inefficient and a huge processing hog that made it rather unpopular.
As an aside the brand new nature of it also lends credence to the idea that a little girl obsessed with computers would know about it but a senior programmer would have no idea how to work it. As a further bonus this also lends credence that Hammond really did pay enough for a good computer system for the park, but Ned fucked it all up by using such an ineffective setup.
People complain all the time about things in older movies they think are fake but were actually real or based on something real.
It was called fsn and was developed for SGI computers running IRIX.

Thank you James for saying nedry isn't a villian in the book it's very realistic that he'd do that and Hammond is a terrible man in the book he said he could use his tech to cure cancer but he won't because he wouldn't be able to charge what he wants for it

The best thing about Jurassic Park, imo, is that the first half is a fun, sci-fi adventure and the second half is a thrilling sci-fi horror, and that changeover happens at EXACTLY the halfway point of the movie, right as the power is killed and the water in the cup starts to ripple before the T-Rex attack.
Even the initial trailer splits things right down the middle, where the first half has the big shots, the wonder, the sweeping spectacle of dinosaurs brought to life, all set to Williams happy music and then, very subtly, right as the T-Rex water ripple scene is shown, the music shifts to something moody and dramatic, and the trailer is edited faster, the shots are darker, and it teases a horror movie.
Absolutely brilliant.
Kathleen Kennedy is the best example of putting the worst person in a place of power because she knows the right people… she is like that politician that never goes away and scratches and claws her way to the top
It is easy to forget how much better this looked than any other dinosaur movie before it. Now, we're spoiled, but before this, dinosaurs in movies were mostly ruled by style and willingness to suspend disbelief.
Still think Dinosaurs on screen have never looked better, especially the escape scene
The Barbasol can is a major MacGuffin in Jurassic Park: The TellTale game. It’s kind of underwhelming game, but in retrospect I guess it’s about the same quality as The Lost World. Which according to Mason, is about as good as the rest of the movies.

Mason lost me with his terrible hot-take and then completely redeemed himself with the "Phil Tippett-toes" joke. What a rollercoaster.
This film inspired me to become a palaeontologist. I now have a masters in palaeontology, on the evolution of fossil horse feet.

I don't really gatekeep anything. Anyone is allowed to like or dislike whatever media they want. I think people gatekeep a lot of stuff that is good at best (the Raimi trilogy and the star wars prequels namely) but Jurassic Park is genuinely as close to cinematic perfection as we've ever gotten. The characters are extremely tight and stick to the theme of Progress vs classical ways. That theme and the characters that uphold it are constantly being challenged. Ian challenges both Grant and Hammond. The kids challenge Grant, while Ellie, Ray, and Muldoon, challenge Hammond. No one is wasted. The rivaling mentalities of Grant's immovable fear of the future, as he's bad with tech and doesn't like kids (the future), clashes with Hammonds 'blind progress at all costs' mentality. Shortcuts are fine as long as we pursue progress! And by the end neither character is a villain and they both learn to meet in the middle. Hammond learns to curb his hubris from Ellie in the restaurant and Grant trusts Lex to be the one to save the day, a girl, a kid, and a tech savvy one is the ultimate hero, not the grizzled white man of 40.
There are no wasted scenes in this film, everything even Grant fumbling with the seat belts has purpose! Note he had two female seat belt parts that don't traditionally click, but he tied them together to achieve the same result. Direct imagery of two females and life finding a way in the first 20 minutes of the film.
This movie is absolute art and Mason is an irredeemable dunce for not recognizing that. (obviously a joke, Maso you're fine, I just wanted to gush about a movie I love)

Sad that I immediately think of the three Spider-man movies than the Evil Dead trilogy when someone says "Raimi trilogy". 2 Evil Dead's are great, third is kind of ehh, 2 Spider-man films are great, third one is kind of ehh.
Both kick the crap out of the Prequels. I still swear to this day that Attack of the Clones isn't a movie, it's a two and a half hour ad for Revenge of the Sith.... while the Phantom Menace is a two hour plus toy commercial. "Roger roger"- best dialogue from the first movie.
Whilst I agree with absolutely everything you've said on Jurassic Park, one of my absolute faves, I don't agree on the Raimi films being "good at best", I understand the first and third, despite my love for them, to an extent but the second film deserves the recognition. I feel the fanbase does go well overboard with how gatekeepy they can be about it, for sure, but SM2 is a genuinely well crafted film in so many ways that I understand why so many react that way towards it and it saddens me to still see a tonne of people say otherwise despite understanding everyone has differing opinions.
I agree completely. The books, despite what some may think, were fantastic reads at the time. Have went back and re-read Jurassic park and lost world a few times throughout the years. The film, however changed a few scenes and key moments, still felt fresh and rehashed in a way that the changes, felt welcomed. I still enjoy Jurassic Park the movie as well, to this day. Cheers
I think people put more thought into this movie than the creators did.
I cannot put into words how much the original Jurassic Park means to me. I was actually a huge dinosaur nerd since aorund 1991 (when I was 5-6), so seeing realistic, "real" dinosaurs in a movie was like a revelation. I was too young to see it in cinema, but my parents knew how much I loved dinosaurs, they bought the VHS as soon as it was available. I will never forget the evening where my parents, and me and my younger brother watched the film together. We were all at the edge of our seat. It was better than going to the movies. It was a special experience.
I loved the movie so much, that on my 9th birthday I had to show it to my friends, who were not allowed to watch that movie (in my country it was rated 12+). It went so far that when their parents came to pick them up, they were upset at my parents that they let them watch the film hahaha.
As someone born around 10 years after it came out I completely agree with you. I remember my mum putting this film on and being slightly traumatised but also amazed.
I find it sad that Jurassic World never made the same effort to make its dinosaur reconstructions up to date, save with the pterosaur Quetzalcoatlus now in Dominion ( they even made the hands point to the animal's side when it stands on the ground. That is how they were actually positioned in life ). In replicating the JP dinosaurs, they failed to replicate what made them so wonderful in the first place.
MAN! I can relate. I was around 5 or 6 when I first seen the movie and I had a JP tent that I would hide in during the scary bits 😂 Still one of my favorite movies to this day (in my 30s)the new films failed to capture the magic and I must admit the nostalgia bug bit me pretty hard with Jurassic World 2015 it was 25 years later on a movie I absolutely adored as a kid and still do so I went to the theaters to see it. Thought I’d was great until the nostalgia wore off and I just felt empty . Anyhoo hopefully this new one is better and I don’t fall for the nostalgia bait again… I probably will though 😂
I watched it so many times as a kid, that I kind of forgot it's basically a horror film. The first time I showed it to my girlfriend (who is Chinese and had never seen it) it was like a whole new experience

Funnily enough they were much smaller than in the movie,in fact the Raptors in the movie are based on Deinonychus,but i am guessing they didn't think the name popped.

The Barbasol can reoccurs in the Telltale Jurassic Park game as a MacGuffin. I think the reason it didn't reoccur in any of the films is because, as stated in this movie, it only has enough coolant inside to preserve the embryos for 36 hours (just long enough to get the embryos back to the mainland and put into more permanent storage). So you'd have to set the plot of whatever sequel(s) immediately in the wake of the first film (as the Telltale game does), which I don't think appealed to Spielberg as it limited the locations and situations.

Spielberg wanted it to be in the sequel. Michael Crichton just didn't write it into the book at all.
But it got buried in mud, Justin! If films have taught me anything, it's that mud has infinitely insulating properties! Predator couldn't even see through mud and he's an aliem!
But no, it's only been an enduring myth because it was so obviously intended as sequelbait that never paid off, but realistically it wouldn't make any kind of sense. You wouldn't have to set the actual film as a direct temporal sequel though, just throw in the callback as being the genesis of whatever is going on years later so we all clap when we see it. Honestly, I won't be shocked if it _does_ make some kind of appearance in the new movie.
I liked the idea that the big macguffin that he risked his life for was just dropped in the mud and lost forever. A nice commentary on the futility of human endeavor, and whatnot. The idea that it was really meant to be an ongoing story element is by comparison depressingly mundane.
I'm glad someone brought up the game, I was hoping they would, but I understand it flying under their radar.
Jeff Goldblum’s character arc between this movie and the second one is very interesting. Goes from a jokester trying to cope with the trauma in the first movie, to PTSD in the second movie being the only guy who knows dinos are a bad idea and getting roped into going back because everyone ignores him.
He only went back because Hammond sent his girlfriend there and she didnt even bother telling him when she got there. Poor Ian lmao Grant only went back for $$$$$$
Phil Tippett had one job, ONE JOB, for the movie "Jurassic Park." He was the "Dinosaur Supervisor," but if you've seen the film, dinosaurs were clearly not supervised very well

In my little Australian town, Jurassic Park was the only film to have been screened at the town hall in the last 30 years.
It was far from a cinema experience, but someone went to a lot of effort to arrange that showing back in the school holidays of 1993. That and knowing there was a stainless steel kitchen in the next room while watching the raptors in a similar kitchen make it a pretty unique experience.
I respect Mason's brilliant move of having the single worst take in movie review history for the sole purpose of pumping up the comment section in order to appease the algorithm. I see you.
I love Hugo Weaving and Meg Ryan's performances in this movie.

I am surprised they never mentioned the fact that the dinosaurs are only ever on screen for a grand total of about 15 minutes. And yet, still a brilliant movie.
That mysterious island joke really got me, I was not expecting that
The Barbasol Can does reappear in the Jurassic Park Telltale Game (which has a man knife fight a raptor and is therefore more valid than anything in camp cretaceous), where the canon ending has it stepped on and destroyed by the T Rex.
Of all the jurassic park movies, this is certainly one of them. Saw it twice in the cinema in 1994, liked it so much left wanting more.
This one stands above the rest for me. A lot of that is nostalgia I'm sure. I was 12 when it came by out. The John Williams score is another big factor. I got the cd from Columbia House and played it constantly.
I'd have to agree. I'd say this one is easily the best out of all of them. I don't even remember the second Jurassic World movie and I have no plans to see the latest one. Which is really sad because I loved these movies when I was younger. They just lost that magic for me. And yes, as soon as I got a car that I could play CDs in I had the soundtrack going. It was extra fun when it was raining.

I’m glad to hear that someone else also feels that Nedry isn’t a pure evil character. The book in particular has me thinking he was just a really poorly treated employee. They threaten him with blackmail and everything if he doesn’t complete the system or tries to quit it’s unbelievable.

Surely Maso's old enough to have seen the impact of Jurassic Park at the time. The movie works on a few different levels, and the character development is fantastic, with Grant learning to adapt and overcome his aversion to children, becoming more family ready for Ellie, like you know, life finds a way.
He probably doesn't factor in the number of "firsts" in a movie and only counts the number of "bests". For example, the dinosaur attack scenes in the 3 different movies he's seen are all similar levels of thrilling, so the 3 movies are similar quality

I absolutely love this series. On top of being both a hilarious and interesting style of review- it's also really informative. Watching the prequel reviews and then this has actually given me real insight into the production behind these movies which I had no clue about before. I'd say these reviews are always of equal quality, just like the Jurassic Park Franchise

omg THANK YOU! Somebody _finally_ mentioned that Kathleen Kennedy is actually one of the film industry's best all time Producers.
She gets so much hate, because of some recent decisions concerning the Star Wars franchise, some people like to pin the bulk of their outrage on her. (there are multiple UA-cam channels dedicated to Kathleen Kennedy hate)
When, if you look up her filmography, everything she's been involved with over the years, since "Jaws" in the late 1970's, it becomes pretty clear how many movies instrumental in the vast majority of our childhood nostalgia she's been either the Executive or just Producer for.
You name the movie, from Back to the Future and Goonies to Forrest Gump, Stand by Me and Saving Private Ryan, if there's a particular film, (or film franchise,) that had a special effect or profound impact on you, growing up, odds are Kathleen Kennedys name will appear in the credits.
She's been THAT instrumental in the production of quality American cinema for the last four decades now, and counting.
Now, don't get me wrong, there's plenty I don't agree with in the latest installments of the Star Wars film franchise, in the latest trilogy of the "Skywalker Saga" in particular.
But, my disappointment is a product of my own lofty, unrealistic, or unreasonable expectations, not the choices made by one single person at Lucasfilm.
It's simply being made for another generation of fans, the ones with me in mind having been made already, decades ago.
She isn't perfect, nobody is. But there's definitely a reason George Lucas chose her to carry forward his legacy.
And her vast body of work through the years is an accomplishment that few others, (especially women,) can have any claim to, in the industry.
Disagree with some of her most recent decisions or not, what she's accomplished up until now is simply undeniable.
And she certainly doesn't deserve a fraction of the vitriol directed at her, not by a long shot.

I've gotta admit, I thought it was really cool that the JP novel had all the charts and diagrams. It actually taught me a lot about statistics, scientific analysis, population tracking, and so on. And you could skip over them if you wanted to (which I did the first time I read it in 6th grade, just before the movie came out).
I'm a graphic designer (among other things) so I'm big on encouraging visualizations. Sometimes they're the most efficient way to get info across.
Right as the movie was being released, they actually discovered a larger raptor species called the “Utah Raptor,” which were almost exactly like the Dinos in the movie.
My favorite fact about this film, and I am frankly shocked that it wasn't mentioned, is that it was produced under the code name Blue Harvest

Fun fact: I was once a nanny to a 2 1/2 year old. Her fave movies? The Sound of Music and Jurassic Park. TSoM fell a close second to the guy getting eaten on the toilet. This little girl absolutely loved that scene. She’d watch it for hours (if you let her), patiently rewinding the vhs to watch those few seconds on repeat.

This movie is genuinely my favourite movie of all time, perfect storytelling, great cast, outstanding soundtrack, brilliant directing, and I even love the little mistakes and inaccuracies. I can't wait for the Lost World next week I think it's incredibly underrated! It has some amazing action set pieces, and a young Vince Vaughn! AND one of my favourite characters from the franchise: Roland Tembo played by the late great Pete Postlethwaite!

(11:03) They actually said something like "looks like we're extinct". Spielberg liked the sound of that and put it in the movie with Jeff Goldblum's character saying it. (Haven't finished the video, so this might be in the Dino-trivia section. 😉)
Just have to say that the visualization of Jeff Goldblums speech pattern was perfect and made me scare my cat from laughter.

I love this movie. It is great. But I would LOVE to see a remake that is more closely in line with the book. The book is great. I think I've read it 4 or 5 times.
I kind of agree. One of the standout parts for me is when they manage to regain control of the park again, start sorting the escaped dinosaurs out, then it all goes to shit because of a system flaw. You almost get redemption before it's yanked away again.

I'm gonna be real: the Barbasol can in Jurassic Park may be the smartest product branding I've ever seen in a movie. They made their product an integral part of the movie and it never seemed forced. Like, I use Barbasol shaving cream as an adult because I saw that can in the movie as a kid, lol.

Nedry would've been in so much trouble if he got away with it. He totally implicates himself with his hacker stunt. In the book he actually planned to get the barbasol can to a freezer on the ship and then head back to his work station.
Maybe the pivot in the movie, and their comment on the fences not needing to be down, was Nedry trying to get everyone killed? I agree he's trying to sneak out and back in the book and that's why he rushes and crashes his vehicle...and then gets gruesomely killed.
I'm pretty sure that's his plan in the movie too, he only plans for the fences to be out for 18 minutes which implies that either he's coming back or that he's set it to come back on automatically so he can't be implicated. The only reason people notice start to notice the problem is that he didn't realize (or care) that the fences were on the same circuit as the rides everyone was riding in, which left Grant & everyone else stranded in front of the T-Rex at the exact wrong time. Also for some reason he tries to do this all in the middle of a freakin' tropical storm, leading him to get lost, crash, and die. Presumably if he'd planned this out a little better (and/or if the kids/Grant/Sattler/Malcolm weren't outside when the fences went down) he would've/could've gotten away clean and made it back with everyone none the wiser.
The only real question is if he's an idiot who didn't auto-time the fences to come back on after 18 minutes or if his little "secret word" bug messed up the fences further, which would make him an idiot _and_ an asshole.
@@TwoPairSA It's been too long since I have seen the movie OR read the book to be sure one way or the other. I have this feeling like at least in the book the tropical storm was something Nedry used intentionally to help cover his tracks. But I'd say we could safely give him idiot to things non-computer along with asshole.

@ManFlabs Well....um...they graphically describe the deaths in detail. I love dinosaurs and I love all the deaths in films but the book actually freaked me out horribly.
