My exact sentiments! I loved this movie because it introduced me to my favourite franchise but yea its just a fun time that makes me giggle now and thats it
Truth be told, I love this movie. We had it on tape and my mum would play it on a rainy day when there was some ironing to be done. That's a comforting memory, and this movie never needed to be anything else than just a schlocky way to pass the time. Just felt like sharing that :)
I had tears in my eyes when i first saw that scene from Godzilla final wars and its still feels very emotional to this day. It was exactly the scene i wished to see when i stepped out the cinema after watching Godzilla 98.
If there's one thing Emmerich and Devlin excel at, in this, Stargate, and ID4, it's the first act build up. And then the thing is revealed, and the movie gets worse. Every time.
Interesting note about Godzilla breathing fire in this movie, there was clearly some debate over weather he actually would be able to do it, which led to this awkward sort of "have it both ways" scene where he sort of roars at some combustible debris, triggering an explosion which could be interpreted as a fireball. Even if Godzilla were breathing fire, it would still have been quite inaccurate, as he is often depicted spewing an atomic blast that didn't even look like fire. The animated series fixes this, showing Godzilla breathing large blue plumes of flame to signify it was atomic in nature, better matching how it looked in the then- current Heisei Era. This is why the internal project title for the animated series was called Blue Harvest. Eagle-eyed readers may also have realized that this was the original production title for Star Wars in 1977.
Jean Reno is an absolute boss in this movie. With his rag-tag croissant eating French secret service men side kicks. "...tell them: code name Dragon Fly"
If they had just called the movie something else than Godzilla I think it might have been received better. And I love that they threw it into Final Wars making it just one of the many various monsters in the Godzilla universe.
fun fact- Toho actually loves the series and how it portrayed godzilla jr as an actual strong monster with atomic breath that they officially named him "godzilla jr" and not "zilla jr"
I love when theyre on the mouth and he goes "Youre going the wrong way man....YOURE GOING THE WRONG WAY!!!" And then the other one says "WILL.YOU SHUT UP NOW"🤣🤣🤣

Honestly as a 6 year old i recognized that the animated Godzilla series was more faithful to Godzilla than the film...i shed literal fucking tears seeing it i was so bad
I like the practical effects in the Godzilla. We still have the top notch miniatures and real explosions. In some shot composing is good, like in the tropical island with tanker on the beach. Overall I treat that movie as a guilty pleasure, but some bits of it are not that bad IMHO

I loved this film I was like 5 or 6 and I saw it in theaters. I still have my zilla blanket
lol I still have mine too
Alec Scheller yeah the movies not a bad kaiju movie but it’s not a good Godzilla movie
@@Trike71171 you really expect a 5 year old to have good opinions on movies? They'll literally enjoy anything as long as it keeps their attention using loud noises and occasional spastic humour. Case and point: Illumination animated movie.
Same here I’m 14 and I think the film is actually ok all the other Godzilla films are horrible tbh
@@adamd6648 I doubt you watched any Godzilla films then.
This video has a shot from The Newsroom and that made me, one of 4 people alive who actually like The Newsroom, happy.
I love the newsroom.
Hah! I have been scrolling looking for another appreciation post. I still preach its merits. That first episode, UGH! Also "that's how I got to Memphis".
Sloan is probably my favorite, love her relationship with smarmy 10:00 dude. Maggie and the guy are a hot mess
Anyway, we're almost to 4!
That's alot of fish
adam Seccombe If you pause at just the right moment you can see that it is indeed a lot of fish
B R U H
The funny part was that Broderick was looking at Maria Pitillo's vagina at the time.
*a lot
That was trrrible
I love that jurassic Park treated cgi tentatively given it's limitations at the time, and these guys were like "nah, it'll be fine" :)
This is my favorite Godzilla movie because my inner child loved dinosaurs back then with a passion. Nowadays I understand what Godzilla is truly about and I can see them as separate things.
My exact sentiments! I loved this movie because it introduced me to my favourite franchise but yea its just a fun time that makes me giggle now and thats it
Tiny Game Grumps clip at 16:25 😂 - I love that episode
One of the best episodes! I'm glad I wasnt the only one to catch that.
I could feel Dan's pain radiate through that one second clip
LOSE A TURN
can't believe they put in our one true king BOBBY B 5:01
Do some red dwarf, you mention it on your podcast a lot
I don't see how them having sex with communist little people would help the videos...
WOOP WOOOHA YAHOO YEEP YEEP WAHOO!!!!!!!
This was the first movie I ever saw stoned and I have to say, it don't remember a single scene.
Good times.
I remember the tag line for the toys was someone shouting "we need bigger guns" and being dissatisfied by nobody saying it in the movie
Jean Reno: French man with French name.
Mr. Sunday Movies: jOHn ReeNO
@Conn Benn Ren-o?
Ruhno.
7:49 Would've been a fine Anguirus design but an Anguirus movie isn't gonna sell.
15:42 Should've been BEEitch.
Avocado11 ...............this looks absolutely nothing like anguirus
@@Trike71171 right!
Chava Gomez exactly i think the art of resign is to change some things but keep the parts that make it awsome
Truth be told, I love this movie. We had it on tape and my mum would play it on a rainy day when there was some ironing to be done. That's a comforting memory, and this movie never needed to be anything else than just a schlocky way to pass the time.
Just felt like sharing that :)
I agree. Its not that bad.. I still enjoy it.
Don't worry. Even though Americans didn't like it it's part of the Toho universe and 'Zilla shows up in one of the Godzilla movies.
And gets wrecked.
I’m the same, I used to watch this as a kid on tape and I have a lot of nostalgia attached to it :)
We recorded on vhs when it aired on tv.
@fake channel it really isn't that terrible as you make it out to be... in itself it's a good monster movie, just not a good zilla movie.
I had tears in my eyes when i first saw that scene from Godzilla final wars and its still feels very emotional to this day. It was exactly the scene i wished to see when i stepped out the cinema after watching Godzilla 98.
France: We have 300 nukes.
Greece: We have 300 spartans.
France: We surrender!
You're not alone buddy! I remember the Godzilla animated series as well, along with the awesome MIB series!
Wasn't the MIB animated series made by the same studio?
@@Grishyy Yes it was!! Which is why they both were so good.~
Dude, you should watch Stargate. It's really fun.
So true, maybe the only good film Roland Emmerich has done imo
Devlin seems to write a great first act, then forgets the movie needs two more acts.
If there's one thing Emmerich and Devlin excel at, in this, Stargate, and ID4, it's the first act build up.
And then the thing is revealed, and the movie gets worse. Every time.
This movie is fantastic, because it sets the stage for Zilla to get absolutely curbstomped in two seconds by the real Goji, set to a Sum 41 song.
To be fair that is a lot of fish
James has never been to New York? But he's a man of the world!
I always thought the “lot of fish” line was supposed to be just a small talk joke
It is
I watched it as a kid and loved it so much, and because of that It will always be on my list of fun films.
And every agent was named Jean-xxxxx
I died laughing at the King Robert Godzilla at 5:03
Thanks Ben
That’s Bobby B! The one true king!
If they had just called the movie something else than Godzilla I think it might have been received better. And I love that they threw it into Final Wars making it just one of the many various monsters in the Godzilla universe.
Can we have that robert baratheon clip?
Pretty please?
He didnt make it, its out there on the internet
I need to find it
fun fact- Toho actually loves the series and how it portrayed godzilla jr as an actual strong monster with atomic breath that they officially named him "godzilla jr" and not "zilla jr"
For Godzilla it’s like if you got lost, asked for directions but got shot instead...and then I realized that’s a thing that actually happens too much.
I know it’s bad, but it still has a special place in my heart
dumbass
@@dioxoi8369 tbh your childhood sucked

Okay, I grew up loving the Godzilla animated show! Our Discovery Zone had a lazer tag room based on the show!
The only stargate you need is Stargate: SG-1
One of my absolute most favorite shows of all time!
Big fan of the TV franchise, but I also love the movie!
I unironically loved this movie and it still has a special place in my heart lol
I love this movie and I will die on that hill.
Same. To me it's the quintessential godzilla movie.
same my man!

I love when theyre on the mouth and he goes
"Youre going the wrong way man....YOURE GOING THE WRONG WAY!!!"
And then the other one says "WILL.YOU SHUT UP NOW"🤣🤣🤣

"They don't feel like a threat because they only eat the French."
Oh so they're the good guys then?
I remember the animated series. It's filed in my head alongside other movie adaptions, like the Evolution one or the Men in Black one. I seem to remember it being alright!
Maybe you guys could look at some older animated series based on movies? Or just Exosquad?
Anyone remember Exosquad? No? Just me?
Okay then.
Exosquad was the shit.
the way I can tell that we've failed as a species is because this movie exists.
Your edits always pull from the most random places to represent things. Kahn, VGHS and a pop off at a Smash Bros tournament, sure why not
Honestly as a 6 year old i recognized that the animated Godzilla series was more faithful to Godzilla than the film...i shed literal fucking tears seeing it i was so bad
"Honestly as a 6 year old.......I shed literal fucking tears". I call bullshit
i actually really liked godzilla 1998
17:46 anyone notice that this review is almost spot on 11 years after Ebert's review? Also, this was the best birthday present I've ever received.
I thought Zilla looked really dorky when running towards the audience.
I like the practical effects in the Godzilla. We still have the top notch miniatures and real explosions. In some shot composing is good, like in the tropical island with tanker on the beach. Overall I treat that movie as a guilty pleasure, but some bits of it are not that bad IMHO
"Mathew Broderick is completely without charisma in this."
I challenge you to name a movie in which Mathew Broderick *isn't* completely without charisma.
Ferris Bueller. Lion King. Other things, possibly.
@@oscarmccormack1611 Eh I dont think he has Charisma in Ferris Bueller, Lion King is the most outgoing Ive ever seen him though. I think it works well in Ferris Bueller because he isn't supposed to give a fuck about anything. Hes easy going, not uber-personable song and dance man. Which is ironic because he got the main Role in the reboot of The Producers, which might have been his worst performance Ive ever fucking seen.
Election.
Election.
cheezemonkeyeater inspector gadget
''He's a bloody bit of all right, tell you what look at this guy'' I love that!
This is a guilty pleasure film for me
The working title must have been "A Simpsons reunion with Mathew Brodrick and a mutated iguana we decided to call Godzilla."
The ideal Godzilla movie should have terror like Cloverfield, fights like Pacific Rim and characters like Jurassic Park (as long as done soulfully and to a standard).
Subscribed to both The Weekly Planet and Mr Sunday Movies but always watch this version solely for the edits. Keep up the amazing work!!
10:52 "Twister is a terrible movie." I agree with this sentiment.
1st movie I ever walked out on
The theme song for the animated series was astonishingly memorable.
Honestly, I love this as much as I hate it mostly because of childhood nostalgia.
Plus I wouldn't even be a Godzilla Fan without it, so that's the most respect I'll give it.
I wasn't going to click, but then I saw a VGHS clip in the preview so I had to. Lol. I love your editor.
I laugh so hard with everyone one of these! Thank you! Could we get a Caravan of Garbage for the GoT finale? xD
Micheal Bay should have directed the movie..
*EXPLOSION*
I think it would actually have been better if done by Michael Bay... Not good, just slightly more interesting.
Isn't Roland Emmerich basically a German Michael bay?
and let's not forget good ole Puff Daddy did a song for this wonderful movie as part of the marketing push, and what a glorious song it was.............................
The director of a new Godzilla movie talking about the old films saying, "The last half was just like two creatures going at it, I don't like that" is like deciding to reboot Saving Private Ryan but deciding to change everything because, "It's just a bunch of dudes shooting at each other for like two hours, that sucks."
Can’t believe you didn’t mention Deeper Underground by Jamiroquoi that was made specifically for this movie and is one of the only other good things about it! The music video for it is probably worth a CoG in itself
I use to like this movie when I was younger, as it's older than me and my first exposure of Godzilla, but looking at it now it's shit
Could agree
I turned 18 the year this movie came out... Saddest part is I loved ID4 when I was 16! AND Stargate when I was 15! This was the world's little hint that Roland Emerich was actually a hack with a budget the whole time!
@@ballsrgrossnugly I was -2 when Godzilla can came out, -4 for ID4 and -6 for Stargate, feel old yet?
Damn this was your first Godzilla movie!?
Mine was a few, and the one I STRONGLY remember is Godzilla vs King Kong
Then I saw this movie and I hated it, I think I was like 6/7 and I disliked it cause it was jsut boring and I kept falling asleep, and this Godzilla NEVER did the laser beam/atomic breath... Made it so lame. Just an overgrown hairdryer.
Call me a heathen, but I actually kind of really like Godzilla's design...
L0L ok
The design itself wasn't the problem. Trying to make it Godzilla was. If this film had been its own original move it probably would have done better.
It's totally fine but it's not Godzilla
I find it funny how in the animated series that came after this movie, they didn’t even bother to make Nick Tatopolis look or sound like Matthew Broadrick (apologies if I spelled the name wrong)
It may not have aged well but that scene where the eye opens in the tunnel was the coolest thing as a kid.
Either way, I think it's unfair to judge the technology today after being spoiled by advancements for the last 25 years.
