As a long time fan of Titanic, both the movie and the ship, i feel I must add at least something to the conversation. As such, here is my favorite piece of trivia from the production: During the filming, Cameron refused to let his actors out of the freezing water for hours until he got a specific moment or shot on camera. Because of this, several of the actors wound up with a build up of ice on their skin, and in some more extreme cases, led to the skin beginning to suffocate and turn blue. To counteract this, specialized teams were brought in to harvest the ice from the skin, and coax the skin back to life, leading to the film being given the working title of “Blue Harvest”.

They were in the movie ... apparently for free? ... and got a record deal after. They've been recording records and touring ever since and are one of the most popular Celtic bands in the world.

I think everything just works and if you cut it down I don’t think the impact of the ending would have nearly as much of a punch than it does. One fun fact I learned in chemistry is that the titanic was supposed to be unsinkable because they gave the ship numerous compartments in the hull, so that should the hull be punctured, only one of the compartments would get filled with water and the ship as a whole would stay afloat. In actuality, when the hull was punctured, the low temperature of the water caused the compartment to collapse in on itself, which breached the adjacent compartment(s), and then that kept happening until the ship did actually sink.

In it we get to see 2nd Officer Lightoller commanding a small group of men in a vicarious balancing act on top of the overturned lifeboat (which really happened) and the baker clinging to a chair and still somehow alive in the water (which is also true, he was the last survivor pulled from the water).
