      He's a great example of a brilliant musician who was also an extraordinary person in many other ways, like when he invited a guy live in his studio as long as he wanted just because the guy was in a bad place in his life, after a messy breakup. Too damn bad he smoked; he might have been around 20 more years, but damn, we're all lucky he lit us up for a while anyway!

Jerry Cantrell once mentioned he'd like to have one of Ed's guitars & Ed ended up having a garage full of gear delivered to the house Jerry was living in. He was once at a convenience store near his house & asked the kid working the register if he was going to the VH concert that night. Kid said no, so Eddie went home to see if he could find tickets. @@e1iseo - You're missing my point. He said "The guy could write, play and arrange. His rhythm parts are every bit as brilliant.." and that statement actually has more to do with Alex than it does Eddie. Obviously you're unaware how important the drums are in a band. They ARE the backbone of the "rhythm parts" and arrangement. Alex also had a very original drum sound and without it, Ed's guitar would have just been a bunch of silly sounding whammy bar guitar. I actually even know a very well-known guitarist that calls Eddie's playing "Van Halen slop". What he meant by that is, have you ever played a game of pool and watched a guy make fancy shots when they weren't even planned that way? That's called "slop". Eddie even admitted this himself. He said "I just do whatever comes to mind and sometimes it's like magic". THAT is the very definition of "slop" in music. Some might also call it spontaneity or improv (improvisational, jazz, etc.). It's unplanned and spontaneous "whatever". That's how Eddie created music.

Every situation & individual is different of course. Do I think Eddie would still have had issues if he didn't become a Rock Star? YES. There is a definate genetic component within their family, as his brother also became an alcoholic/addict (who is also now sober). It all started with their father, who was also a functioning alcoholic (which was ultimately the cause of his death) & he was the one to turn Eddie on to the use of alcohol to stem his stage anxiety...at around the age of 12! It worked & Eddie didn't stop drinking (& smoking cigs) daily, until his wife Valerie left him & he finally entered treatment & got sober. Many with that pre-determined genetic component can try something once & be hooked for life, like it's some kind of biological pull. I've seen it countless times in my own life.

      @pashon4percushon 3 роки тому

      @@coldwinter5710 Oh, ok, some great advice on excuses for doing drugs. This is where its gotten to now, America having addicts as drug fueled role models, like you say. I don't believe that his family incited drugs as a way to success, it was fueled by his success in the music industry, which is typical. I understand that he was trying to make a difference on CNN in something that has nothing to do with his past addictions, and its not CNN portraying him as a role model or else they would've tore his personality up. I'm just saying if you think he's a king, you just have to realize it was drug fueled. Much like Sasha Grey wants to be a school teacher.

      You can learn more about him in the guitar magazine interviews . There is where you can learn Sammy Hagar is a lying #)_;#@&+$!er . Whatever happened between Sam and Ed started with Sam's big mouth and it both hurt AND pissed off Eddie .

    Eddie looks so down to earth, here. Although there are rumors he is an alien from another galaxy:) The first couple of bars of Right Now or Love Walks In sound interstellar to me.

    The world won't be the same with him gone. I place the blame squarely on his inept father who got him hooked on everything bad and inappropriate as a CHILD. EVH is without fault as his addictions were literally pushed on him by his "father." We were lucky to have him as long as we did, but I firmly believe he is an angel and finally has no pain, no addictions, no sorrow only Gods love. RIP Eddie.

      He's one of the very few that didn't just play great but could build a guitar on his own too . Hendrix couldn't do what Eddie did .

    I attended high school from 1980 to 1984. I was just getting into guitar, and EVH was a god. If I had been handed a guitar in music class that they told me was a donation from Eddie Van Halen, I would have been speechless. At the end of the semester I would have hidden the guitar from everyone, told them I lost it somehow and that I would pay it off out of my own pocket.

      American education system had a hard time trying to get any type of orchestra or band in their schools and keep music as part of America's education . Then Grand Wizard Ronald Reagan was elected and made HUGE budget cuts in American education . Now look , today fewer kids can even spell correctly .

    I like how Eddie points out most all charities just want you to write a check. He was willing to gift the musical instruments immediately for the children to get started on and skip the red tape or them being able to sit on the check for interest gains...
