@WS6 1997 yes, true. But the vast majority of VH fans totally overlooked this album, simply because it wasn’t like anything they’d done before, which is sad, because there are some great songs on here, and Eddie had some amazing tones, and playing on this album. “Different stuff”, yes, but that doesn’t mean it was bad. Severely underrated VH album, IMO. *for the record, my favorite VH album is II.
I was really looking forward to VHIII being a huge Extreme and VH fan. The problem I had is it didn't sound like a Van Halen record. The music didn't have that poppy, edgy and catchy sound you would expect from VH. The vocals sounded mushy??? No great hooks (an Eddie signature) I do not blame Gary for that record. Nothing leaves 5150 Studios without EVH's stamp of approval. It sounded like Ed wanted to reinvent the band...again. Van Halen 3.0
In just 3 minutes, I've come to the conclusion (first time seeing him in an interview) that Gary Cherone is a good person - which is more important than most things.
He truly is! The whole band is. After the band stood for a couple of hours of 100 meet and greet photos, they had to encounter me 😅 the last person on line. My phones flash wouldn't behave and we had to take the pic over and over. They were so patient. Nuno graciously signed a pic I had printed of him and Malala from the Nobel Ceremony where he performed with Steven Tyler. I mentioned that I had a distant relative who was a Nobel Laureate and Gary engaged me in conversation about him. He knew exactly who he was and asked some pretty specific questions about him. That got the attention of the other guys. Gary is very thoughtful and insightful and that comes through in his writing.

This was an incredible interview. You are the best person to interview anyone in the VH sphere! They seem more open to taking to you about VH stuff than to anyone else. Keep it up! 🤘
I so appreciate Gary Cherone as a singer and as a member of Van Halen. Had Ed been in a better headspace and the album had a guy like Bruce Fairbairn producing, we would have gotten a very strong record. Great ideas on this record.
Gary comes off as such a great guy. I can't wait for the new Extreme album. I'm hoping they hit many cities on tour after it's released. It's been far too long since I got to see Extreme in concert.
Gary was in a no win situation and gave it a punchers chance. It's actually a solid album at least in my opinion. Super happy for the guys finding this recent resurgence, awesome to see!
Great interview!!!! I remember when VH3 was coming out. It was definitely a big deal at the time. They announced that they were going to do an album launch live on the radio. They had an MC guy doing intros with all 4 members talking about the new material, music videos, etc. I recorded that launch on cassette tape. I believe they only played 4-5 songs off the album. They eventually came to Houston at the Cynthia Woods pavilion. It was a fantastic show. Completely blown away by how good Gary sounded in the band. VH3 is definitely not everyone's fav. If you happen to be a guitar player, then you know exactly how good the album really is. I have a feeling that Ed's drinking started to resurface and that is what led to Gary's departure. Just guessing though. Would have been nice to have had at least one or more albums with Gary. Cheers!!
Gary Cherone honestly had THE best voice out of the three lead singers for VH. However, somehow it didn’t vibe. There’s a great video of Gary and Eddie singing Josephine on a Japanese variety type show. It’s so good. It’s hard to find anything on UA-cam with Eddie’s voice isolated. Eddie had a great voice.
I actually liked VHIII and won the album from the local radio station who was giving away the CD to the third caller after playing a new cut from the album (Fire In The Hole, I believe). Gary was awesome live, and it was such a fresh experience for people like myself who were too young to see VH with Dave, and never got to hear the Dave stuff live with Sammy. I'd love to see WB or the VH camp release some of these old songs someday...
I think Gary is such a great guy, and an awesome musician. And I honestly really enjoyed Van Halen III, I loved that time in my life and in Van Halen's sound. I believe it was unfair, many people's reception of Gary, but me personally I love him a lot. I think he has class and so much talent.
Just Interview Jeremy, I got to Meet and hang with Gary when he was in VH in Australia in 98 and he was such a great guy. My band and Vh had a photo taken together and years later I meet up with Gary again in Australia and was able to give him a copy of that photo which he loved as he had never seen it and he said he was going to ring Ed and tell him about the photo. I'm not sure if he did but I'm glad he has it now, now that Eddie has passed.
I saw the VH 3 tour. The night I saw them, I think Mikey and Gary stole the show. I mean EVH was great, but you could tell he was battling some stuff and Alex had his neck brace on and was recovering from his injury and they sounded great, but their energy wasn't nearly as high as Gary and Michaels. Gary sang all the VH songs great.
I read that they had about 3/4 of the follow up to "III" totally finished and in the can. That's probably why Gary is being so coy here. He knows that there ls more than just a few rough demos. When execs at Warner's came in and said that they weren't happy with what they heard and wanted the band to go back in and start from scratch. I don't know who they were producing the tracks with, but Ed got frustrated and pulled the plug on the whole thing, told Gary that it wasn't going to work out and sent him on his way. That was the beginning of Ed's deep depression and when he fell off the wagon. Such a shame too. Maybe Al and Wolfgang will find some time to dig out that stuff, have it remastered and put it out like Led Zeppelin did with "Coda". I'm sure there's some stuff with Sam and Dave that went on the cutting room floor too, that could be added as well.
@@detroitdiezel7856why couldn’t they just let the material be? Why interfere and step on Ed’s toes? He was a huge star for over 20 years at that point!!!!
@@GuitarGangsterArmi because that's what big record companies do. I was fortunate to meet Gary and Nuno and everyone in Extreme along time ago. I was hanging out with some people from Malden mass and he took me to their band practice just before they released mother don't want to go to school today and they were all so cool great guys well we were all still pretty much kids back then. I honestly think k VHIII is an awesome album I hate when people bash it and bash Gary for being in Van Halen. He in my opinion was the right singer at the wrong time. I think he said it perfectly if they had did a tour before doing the album it would have been received better. I was happy to see Gary with Van Halen at the Boston Garden it was a great show. Thank you Gary for your contribution to the world of Rock n Roll. Can't wait to get the new Extreme album
Been a Van Halen fan since the late 80s and an Extreme fan since I heard Pornograffiti soon after it came out. I saw Extreme in Sydney in '93 and saw VH on their first ever Australian tour with Gary Cherone in Newcastle in '98. Both were amazing. My favourite singer from one of my favourite bands joining another of my favourites bands of all time, what's not to love?
I never saw Van Halen live but have been a fan since Diver Down. I did see Extreme live on the 3 Sides To Every Story tour at the James L Knight Center in Miami, FL. I rode my bike to that concert from my Dad’s house. It was a great concert and it was fun being there. Good vibes for sure. They rocked the house. I have the tour book.
I totally agree with Gary that the record needs to be remixed. The lead vocals production was horrible. Gary got a raw deal on this album. I would LOVE to hear a remix. The songs are great.
I saw them twice this month at both their London shows, on the 19th Gary and Nuno came and shook hands with all the fans in the front row, myself included
I have always loved Gary's voice and while 3 wasn't VH's best album, it was a refreshing album. The albums previous were mainly just party songs with very few deep meaning. Gary's lyrics told a story and addressed societial issues of the time. I would love to hear 3 remixed because it is a very underrated album that had so much potential. I listen to it a few times a year.
For me the best guitar Eddie has played in this album- I think he played things never heard in previous albums. It was a great album everyone in it was in top form.
I really wish Alex Van Halen would come forward, do interviews and guest on Drum Channel or Drumeo and go through his VH legacy, talk about how he came up with all the grooves and give behind the kit tutorials/demonstrations so that his history and talent is explained for future generations. He's too talented to be aloof and completely private and silent now.
Whilst I wholeheartedly agree with the suggestion and along with yourself believe this would be a tremendous benefit to future musicians/drummers, the reasons are obvious as to why AVH has stepped out of the spotlight completely: He lost his baby brother, with whom he had the closest bond more than any other human being, achieved eternal success and became a household name, traveled from Holland to Pasadena, CA and learned English and music together, wrote and rehearsed music millions of times, respected the band and took it as serious as a Doctor takes surgery and, trusted no one else. AVH is still in mourning and will be for the rest of his life.
For Extreme to drop a song like Rise was and us incredible. This shows the legendary status of early VH....its beyond explanation....the sheer influence of Eddie is just shockwaves...to this DAY...
Great interview. Gary was right about the direction of the band, they should have toured first then recorded the 3 album after the tour. They were on to something live wise. Just check out any of the shows from that era on UA-cam. The Sydney Australia show that was shown on MTV was a good example. Great set. Gary is incredible live. Great vocal range. It was just too much of a departure of the Van Halen formula for the fans to take. I’m a fan but you could definitely nitpick some things. Spot on when Gary said it should be remixed. A different producer would have made a difference.
If you have the opportunity, go see Extreme live. Yes, Nuno is underrated. Gary is underestimated. Pat, the bass player, is not widely known and deserves to be. Kevin, the drummer, is the heartbeat of the band and the crowd....you can literally feel it. All four together create a real live show that is beyond belief.
Gary is super cool. Met him once shortly after their first album. He was totally approachable and very down to earth. Extreme even in the club days was terrifyingly good! Tight band, professional and very confident in what they were doing. Awesome interview!

Eddie's 5150 studio is jam packed with recordings from what I saw in the video of Wolfie showing the studio. I'd love to hear THAT material!
Gary comes off as such a great guy. I can't wait for the new Extreme album. I'm hoping they hit many cities on tour after it's released. It's been far too long since I got to see Extreme in concert.
seeing them tonight; I cannot WAIT
I’m blessed to have seen VH with all 3 singers and enjoyed them all! Also a big Extreme fan. Gary is a great singer.
Cheers!!
Gary is in top 3 of lead singers...Freddie Mercury, Mick Jagger and Gary Cherone...all brilliant vocally and showmanship
You’re such a great interviewer! And you get the best guests as well 🤘🏼
Just Interview Jeremy, I got to Meet and hang with Gary when he was in VH in Australia in 98 and he was such a great guy.
I saw VH with Gery at the Woodlands Houston, TX, and I loved it. I am still rocking to VH III.
Now that was a great interview. You asked some really good questions and Gary was great with the answers. Loved the stories.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for asking the real questions, and tactfully pushing for the real answers!
I've watched Van Halen live from Sydney about 100 times! I always enjoyed how seeing how tight the band was at that time.
And that was only their 6th show of the tour (I went to the 2nd one, Auckland NZ)
I was at Sydney Canberra n Newcastle. I'm on the panama thumbnail on youtube
@@diamondd2778 Pink shirt guy?
It's a great concert. One of their best live documents.
Didn't they have a whole album pretty much done? Gary is such a class act.
They want to make money and sell albums, and if they feel that one of their artists isn't producing material that will benefit the company, they'll refuse to release it. Just read up on the fights that Prince had with Warner Brothers Records and George Michael had with his label, Sony.
@@detroitdiezel7856 AND VAN HALEN IV WAS BORN!!!!! WOLFIE, AL, MIKEY, AND GARY!!!! JUST KIDDING. WOLFIE HAS TO GO ON HIS OWN OR HE'LL BE A COVER BAND PLAYING HIS DADS MUSIC FOREVER. A REALLY COOL COVER BAND, BUT A COVER BAND NONETHELESS.
Great interview, Jeremy. I love how down to earth and wise Gary is. I sure as hell hope they don’t release the whole album on Spotify, though. These guys need to make money too…
I was fortunate to meet Gary and Nuno and everyone in Extreme along time ago.
Great interview! Gary is so down to earth and a pleasure to listen to.
I just saw Extreme on the new tour and they crushed it. Go see them!
I saw them twice this month at both their London shows, on the 19th Gary and Nuno came and shook hands with all the fans in the front row, myself included
Great interview. Gary rocks!!
They were really good live with Gary.
VH III is my favorite VH album and the only one in their catalog where I don't skip a single track.
Gary said perfect when he says VH3 should be remixed and change the sound. ❤ Mad respect for Gary.
Great interview. You’re the man Jeremy !! Much respect from Australia 🇦🇺
Cheers Steve!! Alright M8!!!
Gary is such a great guy and talent. VH is my number 1 but Extreme was always one of my faves. 🙌🙌
So good and Finish what you started had me concerned in the Hagar days. To be honest I completely missed VH III
Keith-We all hated that album,
Decades later, ego free and more mature yes it might sound ok.
But when it came out?nay, none of us did.
@@stevedamien638 Some of us did.
“Wisdom…to the tooth…”.
Uh really??
For me the best guitar Eddie has played in this album- I think he played things never heard in previous albums. It was a great album everyone in it was in top form.
I really wish Alex Van Halen would come forward, do interviews and guest on Drum Channel or Drumeo and go through his VH legacy, talk about how he came up with all the grooves and give behind the kit tutorials/demonstrations so that his history and talent is explained for future generations. He's too talented to be aloof and completely private and silent now.
Whilst I wholeheartedly agree with the suggestion and along with yourself believe this would be a tremendous benefit to future musicians/drummers, the reasons are obvious as to why AVH has stepped out of the spotlight completely:
He lost his baby brother, with whom he had the closest bond more than any other human being, achieved eternal success and became a household name, traveled from Holland to Pasadena, CA and learned English and music together, wrote and rehearsed music millions of times, respected the band and took it as serious as a Doctor takes surgery and, trusted no one else.
AVH is still in mourning and will be for the rest of his life.
Gary is a CLASS ACT !!! Great interview Jeremy!
For Extreme to drop a song like Rise was and us incredible.
This shows the legendary status of early VH....its beyond explanation....the sheer influence of Eddie is just shockwaves...to this DAY...
Yeah, the perfect Lead Guitarist🎸🎸🎸🎸
Great interview. Gary was right about the direction of the band, they should have toured first then recorded the 3 album after the tour. They were on to something live wise. Just check out any of the shows from that era on UA-cam. The Sydney Australia show that was shown on MTV was a good example. Great set. Gary is incredible live. Great vocal range. It was just too much of a departure of the Van Halen formula for the fans to take. I’m a fan but you could definitely nitpick some things. Spot on when Gary said it should be remixed. A different producer would have made a difference.
I agree with you 💯 percent!
Just wonderful mate. Great insight. Lots of love for the III Era!
Love Gary's voice & SO much talent! 💯👍👊
Just came across this channel. Good interview. Extreme has had some really good songs. That Nuno is one underrated guitar player.
"Thats why I love you" was a great song and should've been on VH 3. Probably would've been a hit
Gary is super cool. Met him once shortly after their first album. He was totally approachable and very down to earth. Extreme even in the club days was terrifyingly good! Tight band, professional and very confident in what they were doing. Awesome interview!
Dude you are an EXCELLENT interviewer. This is the first thing I have watched with you and I am so impressed. You never get in the way of the interviewee. Such an underrated skill. Automatic subscribe!
VHIII is one of my all time fave albums; I LOVE that one! I always LOVED Gary he can sing anything!
When the interview came to touchy areas, you both handled it with respect and vulnerability. Kudos. Gary seems like a fantastic guy.
If I could say ONE THING to Gary Cherone, it would be OWN VH3. Play some of those songs with Extreme, just do it!! People would enjoy it.
Not with Nuno playing guitar! That would NEVER happen!
Mr Cherone we love you !!!!
I watch you ‘From Afar’… great quote from Gary…
Love the From the Inside album by Alice Cooper behind Gary....one of my all time favourites...man has gòod taste and is a class act !!
We had a whole chat about his love for Da Coop in the full interview, watch it on Spotify or listen wherever you get podcast! Look up “The Jeremy White Show” 🤘🏻
I got that bitch on vinyl…greatalbum 1978…Alice kinda shunned it because he was going thru alcohol addiction and went away and this album was born afterwards ..it’s a a concept album and all the songs are about people in a insane asylum and Bernie taupin (Elton johns lyricist)wrote it…it’s the best of Alice in my opinion.
Thank you for telling us about the new album at the beginning, I’ve just pre-ordered it on CD AND VINYL! Great stories from Gary, he likes you. Cheers Jeremy! - R
Rock on!
Great interview. Gary seems like a great guy. Love the new single, and enjoyed him on VH3. I loved From Afar and Fire in the Hole.
Gary is down to earth
For a long time with me, Gary was down the street.
Back in 84, I walked into gym class and to my surprise, Gary was the substitute gym teacher. I was was like WTF…. Long hair, concert short, ripped jeans, and HIM cock blocking all the girls. True story
I don't care what anyone says that album has some great Eddie Van Halen riffs, good stuff
Gary is one of the greatest front man ever. Saw him 3 weeks ago and he was fire. Met him after the show and e really just an awesome guy and gentleman.
