Forget about the technical stuff. Eddie did something more special : He made kids play their tennisrackets in millions of rooms all over the world. The sheer joy of playing is his biggest contribution to music.
A lot of people don’t know about all the guitars Eddie gave to a lot of those same kids through the Opus program. Which is a non profit charity organization for music programs across America
Yes. I said on Facebook that his passion fueled my passion for the guitar. I played tennis rackets, yard sticks and 2x4’s because of Ed. And when I finally learned how to play, I practiced for hours because I wanted to be a tenth as good as Edward was. Ed changed my life.
His technical ability was crazy but don't forget how amazing he was as a writer too. That's what made him huge. There are 9 year olds who can play anything but creating it out of nowhere is a whole different story.
Yeah. Creating it. People are discovering the beautiful simplicity of his compositions. But “creating” that “simplexity” takes a special kind of genius.
Now all kids who play guitar nowadays have 8 string guitars to play shitty djent music. We get it you can play one finger power chords and chug on the Low E string. Also don’t forget the generic sweep picking. That’s why we’re never have another EVH.
I can honestly and definitively say that my youth is officially over. I feel like I can speak for a lot of others my age. As a guitar guy he changed my entire life, how I looked at life and was always the soundtrack to every moment. Even as an adult, he was and still is. My hero.
I heard vh the first time in 1979 as a kid listening to my older neighbor's 8 tracks. I was immediately hooked. I haven't missed a concert since 1984 in Pittsburgh. I am devastated that I will never get to see that kind of magic on stage again. Much love and prayers to the vh family. He was truely the g.o.a.t!!!
I was one of those who believed that Eddie VanHalen would live forever because he was just larger than life.. and of course I'm once again reminded that no one is too powerful to defeat death. Eddie was like a super hero on that guitar and changed lives with that instrument in his hand. Oh man... This one is a hard one to process... Heart goes out to Wolf, Valerie and everyone else in the VH family.
I still can't digest this loss. I never met the man, but he lived in my heart, and in my hands every time I picked up my instrument, or when I listened to his recordings. A piece of my life has died. I heard Eruption on TV yesterday morning, and I cried like a baby. He was MY Hendrix. Love you Eddie..rest now. King Edward lives forever..
Eddie is a true rock legend. He is a part of the American culture, and a part of all our lives, as kids growing up with his music. He will truly be missed by all. RIP Eddie 🌹🌹🎵🎵
Howard did a magnificent tribute to Eddie. Talking about the enormous, once in a lifetime talent that is gone and can never be replaced. Thank you Howard for paying the ultimate compliments to a true music legend
That little, quiet moment in "Dance The Night Away", where it's just him plucking quietly away at his guitar, somehow plucking crystal clear notes from his Frankenstrat, painting a delicate picture in sound of a beautiful woman just enjoying herself dancing, is one of the most beautiful moments ever recorded in popular music. Eddie gave us that beauty.
Eddie Van Halen was truly the Beethoven of Rock n' Roll. What a fantastic tribute that Howard and Robin presented to a brilliant musician. I'm so happy that Sammy and Eddie were back in each other's hearts, both for different reasons. Much love to Eddie, may your spirit fly high and be free.

Breaks my heart man. 2020 has been the worst year and I think it's responsible for the demise of the best guitar player ever Edward Van Halen couldn't or wouldn't do it events broke his spirit that was the medicine that cure his cancer in the keep him going was doing public events now it's all been taken away and so has the best guitar player to ever pick up
I agree Jim..I'm an Xer also. So much loss of our great talent unmatched lately. They seem to be dying younger & younger. Tom Petty, Chris Cornell, Scott Weiland, Kurt Cobain, David Bowie, Glenn Frey, Prince, Michael Jackson, Neal Peart, Gordon Downie, Brad Delp, Aretha Franklin , Whitney Houston..Eddie, ...the list goes on ..it's so sad. I have faith that their souls are now in a better place, but yeah, it sucks how so many people of true talent have passed that were a part of of our youth. Every generation younger than us will have to face the same loss in their favorites also sooner than later, & will grow older as us also & grieve for their favorites also, sooner than later. God speed Eddie Van Halen. What a talent what a smile. 😃🎸
I smoked my first doobie in 1978 at a Van Halen concert, In my opinion, the greatest guitarist in the world. Thank you Eddie for the blessing of the music you left behind, every Van Halen song has a memory attached to it, old friends and badass concerts we only paid 10.00 to see...the good old days...Rock in heavenly peace Eddie. This one hurts bad. At 15 the lyrics ...''.I live my life like there's no tomorrow '' oh man..70's rock will never die....
Funny you should say that... I saw Eddie play the Monsters of Rock in Tampa with Sammy Hagar. I fought like hell for a sopt and stood front row in front of Eddie for the whole show... I was probably 15 feet away from him expecting frantic blazing action to get it all together. Amazingly, amazingly he performed at a world-class level and made it all look so casual and effortless while laughing and having pure fun. It did look amazingly simple... but it wasn't. I've never forgotten his unique talent, and I've been up front watching some of the greatest of players ever... and most of them played like they had to work for their perfection. I've tried to explain it to other people, but it's one of those things that has to be seen live to understand. Eddie made it look easy and was destined to be the best, which he was. I think he knew it, yet remained humble and kind if you follow his work. Thanks, man. You left this world a better place for us all with your music. EVH RIP 2020

It's the end of an era. Eddie is the reason I continued playing the Guitar when I first heard him when most players just up and quit. I've been playing for 52 years now and I "Always" play a VanHalen song whenever I pick up my Strat. Thank you Eddie for being an inspiration to me an Millions of Guitarists around the world. When a star dies, it's light continues to shine on and on, for millennia. Eddie Van Halen died in October 2020. But the lives of those he's touched will continue to be brightened by his light. Forever, and ever.
His music fueled every single spring break/summer of my youth. From “1984” all the way through “For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge”. I always knew this day would come. It was still a surprise gut punch hearing the news. Never cried for any other others who recently passed. I was sad for the others but when I heard the news about EVH it stopped me in my tracks. In my garage waxing my car I sat down and shed some tears. I then cued up Van Halen’s first album and just let it play. Volume up as loud as my poor speakers could handle. Thank you Eddie. For fueling my adolescent years with your music. I grew up in the best generation ever and got to experience all of your music as it was released. Hung your pictures from Hit Parader on my walls/school locker and mastered the air guitar. Never looked at my hot teachers the same either. You will be missed but your legacy will live on through countless future generations listening to your music.
Eddie's genius wasn't so much the technique as it was using the technique in actual good pieces of music. He had all the techniques, sure, but it was the grooves he used them in that makes him unforgettable.
Steve’s got sleeper cell skills to the Howard Stern Show. A full box of talent from his recreation of the set, to his impressive guitar skills and knowledge. He’s not someone who can just talk music, he can build it and play it like a pro. Hats off to you Steve.
Had the pleasure of seeing Van Halen live 3 times...first time was the 1984 tour at Kemper Arena Kansas City. I have to say he was the greatest I ever saw live...thanks Eddie, I'll miss you
My heart was sad & heavy upon Neil Peart's passing, now E.V.H.. They both left us with great music and memories. R.I.P. to both of these great musicians.
EVH was the GOAT, loved watching him. He was amazing. I'd just sit and watch with my mouth hanging open wondering where he came from. Certainly not this Earth! Plus, he was a great guy. Loved his family, was a great father. EVH the one and only!
My Aunt was friends with him. She met him at the Betty Ford clinic in the mid-80s when they were both recovering. She was an AP History school teacher and they teamed up and beat all of the other teams at the clinic in Trivial Pursuit. When my dad (her brother) called her to check on her, she said "I teamed up in Trivial Pursuit with some guy named Eddie Van Halen. Apparently he's a well-known musician." She had no idea who he was. I was a guitar player and I worshipped Eddie, so my dad freaked out that my aunt became friends with him, and immediately told me. She gave me his number. I called him. When I heard his voice on the other line, I freaked out and hung up. I always regretted that but, hey, I was just a little kid.
This is such a cool story!! Thanks a lot for sharing. I love hearing these kinds of things. And you’re so specific and random yet totally logical, even the biggest cynic isn’t gonna call BS.
The guitar GOAT. Thank you for this tribute. Still in tears...this is as difficult as losing Neil Peart. You not only have real talent (no autotuned hip hop crap that these young kids are growing up with), but INCREDIBLE perfection and technique within their skills. RIP EVH from a loyal VH fan.
Another thing that is noteworthy is that multiple musicians have said that Eddie Van Halen was the nicest guy. I was just watching an interview with Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains who was good buddies with Eddie. He said he used to give him all sorts of free gear when he was getting started in the 90s just out of the blue. He'd come back from a tour and his whole garage would be filled up with high end amps, guitars, and other gear all courtesy of Eddie. All the accounts I've heard from the people that knew him well said he was a really great guy. What a loss, RIP EVH
I love Jerry Cantrell. What a good dude & freakin awesome guitarist. Love his sound too. A cool person. Just like Eddie. The king is dead, long live the king.
Eddie doesn't get enough credit for being one of the all time greats. Jerry is another musician who doesn't get enough credit for being a great musician and song writer.
My first real rock concert was the first tour with Hagar, and BTO. When we walked in and I saw the light rig and the drum kit the hair stood up. Pretty impressive for your first big show. Eddie’s pick hitting the strings was so percussive and the music is so loud I had to cover my 7th grade ears sing along along at the top of my lungs. Love you Edward RIP
I had just gotten in my car at work, turned on the radio, the news came on and said that Eddie had passed away. I immediately had shivers run through my body and my heart began to beat much faster. I'm heart broken. He is the reason I bought a guitar and have been practicing ever since. The world just doesn't seem the same. I will truly miss you.
7:20 I remember when Ed gave Howard that guitar. The Van Halen 3 lineup was in the studio. Howard was interviewing the band and Ed just got up and grabbed that guitar and signed it for Howard and gave it to him. Ed, you will never be forgotten.
Eddie Van Halen is like Mozart, Remembered for eternity. Few can change music Eddie was one of the very few. His greatest guitar solo is on live without a net when he play 5150. R.I.P. my guitar god...
I was lucky enought to be at both of the shows for "Live Without a Net" in New Haven in 1986. The 1st night he finished Eruption about 4 ft from where i was standing. When he through his picks out, i was so close they went right over my head!!! The 2nd night is the one on the video...both were awesome! I actually see myself right after Alex's drum solo at around 22:10, bunch of us standing behind a rail.....what an amazing 2 nights! I was 21 and living in a dream!!!!! Thank you Eddie for a great lifelong memory!!!!
Yep , u r a fire horse and Eddie , Dave and Michael are all horses as well .....all of you are free spirits. So sad Eddie has passed. Heaven is electric tonight🔥🐴🔥
I remember exactly where I was when I first heard Eruption. I was In my friend Jimmy’s bedroom with a couple of other guys. We were all drinking and goofing off. And then it came on. I absolutely freaked out. I made him play it over and over and over until everybody started complaining. I bought the record the next day, then I played it for my girlfriend and her brother and some of their friends and then they went out and bought it. And it kinda increased exponentially 1-2-4-8-16. It was amazing. I had been playing guitar for less than a year when I first heard Eruption. So I couldn’t even touch it. But then a local guitarist showed me how to Tap and man I was loving life. Now forty years later Eddie can still inspire me to practice. But it’s not just guitar playing that I’m thankful for. A lot of times my goofball friends would want to go out get drunk and cause trouble. But most of the time I stayed home and practiced. So because of Eddie I stayed out of harms way. So thank you Eddie Van Halen. Every time I see lightning in the sky I’ll know your jamming in heaven. RIP
Eddie once said at Dimebag Darrell’s funeral that an original deserves an original, and promptly gave up and buried his Van Halen II guitar with Dime. Eddie himself was also an original. I just don’t know what to give back yet, but I’m sure I’ll find out someday.
Yes! I heard about that! I think he also gave a guitar to Jason Becker who as you may know is completely crippled from ALS. This is what he wrote on Twitter........twitter.com/jasonelibecker/status/1313699017994366978
Steve, you ain't no slouch on that axe! MUCH impressed... WOW! Well done! Thanks Howard! Six days since Eddie left us to electrify the heavens and my eyes still well up when reading things or listening to certain pieces. Godspeed Rockstar!
Eddie played the soundtrack of my youth and Im sure he’s playing in heaven. His guitar playing was mesmerizing. Had a poster of him on my wall. Had to put on my VH necklace and listen to all the music. Still sounds great. What a loss. My heart breaks. Hopefully his library archive can be retrieved. My condolences to Valerie and Wolfie and the family. Rest In Peace you are loved
The two brothers kept staying together from childhood to manhood. Climbing it from zero to fame & fortune together. Always together until one of them left. It's just heartbreaking ... But life is what it is. RIP my hero, Eddie, your legacy keeps on living forever in our hearts.
I believe that most people will say that Hendrix and Page are at the top of the list, with Stevie Ray solidly in the mix. To say that there are 5 people better than Eddie? All I will say is that you better bring some indisputable facts and a lot of them. #RIPEVH #RockOn
@ Mr. Chopsticks a travesty indeed by rolling stone ranking EVH so low. Keep in mind the crew at rolling stone is very devoted to the old guard. Their ranking should be taken with a grain of salt. EVH is the finest guitarist who ever lived.
Eddie is the Musician everyone wishes they could be. Watching him Preform was mesmerizing all the leaps and that friendly smile he had that makes you realize how much this Man loved playing, preforming, and recording. He shared his gifts with us And it feels like we lost A Family member. Much Love and respect For the Van Halen Family.
"When Eddie Van Halen came on the scene, I'd never heard guitar-playing like that. You knew something superior was happening." Very well said, Howard Stern. Direct to the point. And you're also right that he's gone now. Yet his name and music will live on. Believe it.
Me and my husband me and my husband fell in love listening to Van Halen and watching Eddie jam out on the guitar, those were the best times of my life.
Dude that guy with the guitar actually did an amazing job quickly and simply explaining why EVH is so revered and unique. Awesome video
Forget about the technical stuff.
Eddie did something more special :
He made kids play their tennisrackets in millions of rooms all over the world.
The sheer joy of playing is his biggest contribution to music.
For me it was a Louisville Slugger baseball bat, but nonetheless well said on your part.
awesome comment.
well said. I'm going to quote you!
What are the odds Howard has a staff member who shreds and knows everything about Eddie! Well done Steve!!!
His technical ability was crazy but don't forget how amazing he was as a writer too. That's what made him huge. There are 9 year olds who can play anything but creating it out of nowhere is a whole different story.
Exactly!
Yeah. Creating it. People are discovering the beautiful simplicity of his compositions. But “creating” that “simplexity” takes a special kind of genius.
Eddie didn't play guitar.. He WAS the guitar. RIP King Edward
Hearing that Ed and Sammy were communicating and made amends makes my heart so happy for them both! Even more so now that Ed’s gone.
Agreed. It's good to hear they at least got to burry the hatchet on their personal differences.

me too man, I felt a weight off my shoulders lol. Hope it was all good between him and the other members too
Van Hagar kicked ass. Poundcake is one of my favorite VH songs ever
This was a very nice tribute by Howard. He usually makes fun of people but was very sincere this time.
Of course, what is he gonna make fun of the deceased?
"Where does all that talent go"? It goes out into universe influencing every other guitar player to come. Can 't stop that amount of positive energy.

Yeah he's a good guitar player! Didn't know that.
He rips. You can tell he is a real fan. Love it

Omg he was AWSOME . Wish I could play little something ....
EVH's legacy is alive and well and sitting right in that chair! 👍
It really hits hard when one of your favorite rock stars passes away - especially too soon. Makes you think of your own mortality.

He’s not someone who can just talk music, he can build it and play it like a pro.
Hats off to you Steve.
Had the pleasure of seeing Van Halen live 3 times...first time was the 1984 tour at Kemper Arena Kansas City.
I have to say he was the greatest I ever saw live...thanks Eddie, I'll miss you
He was in his own league, God have mercy on his soul. Thanks Eddie for share your amazing talent with the world.
ln God We Trust mercy? Fuck off
My heart was sad & heavy upon Neil Peart's passing, now E.V.H..
They both left us with great music and memories. R.I.P. to both of these great musicians.
I can't imagine life without Van Halen. For 40+ years just hearing a song still can change my mood. Thanks guys.
Wow what a story. Hope your aunt is doing ok.
This is such a cool story!! Thanks a lot for sharing. I love hearing these kinds of things. And you’re so specific and random yet totally logical, even the biggest cynic isn’t gonna call BS.
She GAVE you his number??? How awesome! I'm sure Eddie wanted his number to be given out !! 🤦
Just kidding 🙂
Whatta trip
Hilarious!
I was just out of high school in 1977 heard runnin with the devil, Jamie’s cryin, couldn’t believe his tone incredible
Thanks for sharing your gift Ed, you'll be missed.
So glad to hear that he and Sammy were able to put all the shit behind them and find peace, and love.
RIP King.
Same here.

Another way for that scumbag Hagar to make it about him. He's not even buried yet...geez
So Cool
I love Jerry Cantrell. What a good dude & freakin awesome guitarist. Love his sound too. A cool person. Just like Eddie. The king is dead, long live the king.
Eddie doesn't get enough credit for being one of the all time greats. Jerry is another musician who doesn't get enough credit for being a great musician and song writer.
Cantrell is a musical genius, like Eddie was.
Eddie's gone but the effects of his innovations are infinite!!! Thx Howard!!! 🎸❤️👏
Van Halen is THE best American band of all time! My favorite EVER
50% from the Netherlands!😁
My first real rock concert was the first tour with Hagar, and BTO. When we walked in and I saw the light rig and the drum kit the hair stood up. Pretty impressive for your first big show. Eddie’s pick hitting the strings was so percussive and the music is so loud I had to cover my 7th grade ears sing along along at the top of my lungs. Love you Edward RIP
When Eddie and Alex would lock in to a heavy groove live there was nothing better ! R.I.P. EVH the King of Swing , the Tone Chaser Long Live the King.
You should hear/see the solos he did in Venezuela or Largo, Maryland where drop kicks the Marshall stacks, lol... Good times.
Still have the VHS!!
Mr. Stern... I always admire your passion for music. Thanks for all you do for the music community. 🤘🏽 You rock too!
Those first 6 albums are still amazing!!!!
When a guitarist can play like Eddie did and doesn't need to hide sloppy playing behind layers of FX and distortion, you know he's good! RIP, EVH
Indeed. Eddie could have picked up a broomstick with some yarn strung to it and made it fucking sing....
So true so true!!!
A true innovator - God Gifted . Prayers to the Family .
"The saddest part of life is when the person who gave you the best memories becomes a memory" THANK YOU
I live my life like there's no tomorrow...
Thank you EVH. Even though you're not in this world anymore somehow you still make me smile. 😘
Brilliant guitarist 🎸 Rest in Paradise....EVH is still rocking above! ❤🤙
Legendary.
Sometimes you only need one word.
There’s Jimi and Eddie, then everyone else.
lupowins Page
Van Halen and Eddie's blazing guitar was the soundtrack of my teens, 20's, 30s and I still listen to their music today. R.I.P. EVH !!!
Yep , u r a fire horse and Eddie , Dave and Michael are all horses as well .....all of you are free spirits. So sad Eddie has passed. Heaven is electric tonight🔥🐴🔥
Oh ..... I forgot ..... Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn ...... born in yr of horse too🐴
I always have EVH in my play loop cant live without it that noise is just so special RIP.
That I’m sure that was a lot to give up ...
But that shows you what kind of person he was !!!! Great 👍🏻
When you do my brother, please pass on my prayers and gratefulness too... 🙏
Vinnie said if his brother knew he was gonna be buried with that guitar he'd have said "kill me now!" 🤣
Thank You Howard. Eddie will be missed.
Steve, you ain't no slouch on that axe! MUCH impressed... WOW! Well done! Thanks Howard!
Six days since Eddie left us to electrify the heavens and my eyes still well up when reading things or listening to certain pieces. Godspeed Rockstar!
Thank you Howard. Eddie Van Halen was a gift to this world. He was an inventor and an innovator. An iconic legend. Miss you Eddie.
Van Halen; First concert I ever saw. Fair Warning tour: October 2, 1981 in Austin. Never forget it. Sad to say good bye. Nice tribute.
Not the way God works sweetie. Read the bible and find out the truth
VH first album should be in the national archives in Washington
RIP Eddie Van Halen! I remember you from the Valley in So Cal way back when you guys were doing garage band parties!
Howard done an excellent job of telling the world how great Eddie was and there will never be one that will even come close to the brilliance of EVH..
One of my favorite musicians. I grew up listening to VH through my parents. RIP EVH ❤️🎸
How wonderful to hear Sam and Ed were able to make peace. Still so sad for Alex and Wolf.
OCHO Comics ya hitting us fans hard ...imagine how bad it is for alex and wolf 😞
The two brothers kept staying together from childhood to manhood.
Climbing it from zero to fame & fortune together.
Always together until one of them left.
It's just heartbreaking ...
But life is what it is.
RIP my hero, Eddie, your legacy keeps on living forever in our hearts.
Dude smoked three packs a day and died of throat/mouth cancer. Absolute shame. RIP Eddie.
1:50. There is only one Eddie Van Halen as there is one Jimi Hendrix. None of them can be replaced but will be forever remembered.😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔
Rolling Stone ranked him #8 greatest guitar player of all time, which says a lot about Rolling Stones' credibility.
I would think it would be Jimi, Eddie and Jimmy...and you could definitely argue the order.
I believe that most people will say that Hendrix and Page are at the top of the list, with Stevie Ray solidly in the mix. To say that there are 5 people better than Eddie? All I will say is that you better bring some indisputable facts and a lot of them. #RIPEVH #RockOn
Avoiding a few thousand flamenco players in the process. Where was Bailey?
@ Mr. Chopsticks a travesty indeed by rolling stone ranking EVH so low. Keep in mind the crew at rolling stone is very devoted to the old guard. Their ranking should be taken with a grain of salt. EVH is the finest guitarist who ever lived.
1. Jimi Hendrix 2. Jimmy Page 3. Robin Trower my top 3
Thanks for doing this tribute. There was not enough press on Eddie’s amazing ness when he passed. His son Wolfie is quite the musician himself
Eddie is the Musician everyone wishes they could be. Watching him
Preform was mesmerizing all the leaps and that friendly smile he had that makes you realize how much this Man loved playing, preforming, and recording. He shared his gifts with us
And it feels like we lost
A Family member. Much Love and respect
For the Van Halen Family.
"When Eddie Van Halen came on the scene, I'd never heard guitar-playing like that. You knew something superior was happening." Very well said, Howard Stern. Direct to the point. And you're also right that he's gone now. Yet his name and music will live on. Believe it.
Howard - SAID IT Right !!!!!!! Thanks Howard !
Truly a Human Being... 🙏
I loved his vibe! His smile! His guitar playing! He was this bright light of life is now gone. He even made the guitar talk!
Me and my husband me and my husband fell in love listening to Van Halen and watching Eddie jam out on the guitar, those were the best times of my life.
Thank you Howard. I've been an Edward Van Halen fan since '78 when I was 11 years old. RIP
Nowicki playing “Cathedral” is sick. I never knew that’s how EVH made that effect 🔥
His talent lives on in all the guitarists he has inspired.
The greatest. Loved you King Edward.
