Once Eddie said "I'm getting off topic here" and she responded "No, this is fascinating", I knew it was going to be good. Wasn't prepared for How good, though.
I just watched this again in January 2024 with many tears. Eddie was a beautiful, humble, smart, grateful soul. Such an innovator. He is so proud of his brother and son Wolfie. This was an endearing interview ❤
It for seems way more special now more so than when it came out before his passing. least it feels that way for me. he was for sure a wonderful person.
@@jasonrand7297I agree completely. It just seems he’s so himself here . Really honest and just totally relaxed. He’s magnetic. I’m still broken hearted over his passing - same as I felt when Top Petty died . Too Petty was also magnetic.
I hate to be a party pooper, but I heard he was an ass in his earlier years. He has gotten to become a better human unlike someone (*cough*Clapton*cough*)
He was loved because of his personality firstly, and his talent secondly (a close second)..not to mention that smile. They weren't my favourite band but I still really really liked and admired them. Thanks for posting this interview. Its a gem, like Eddie.
yes, currently. Thats the first thing I did. I was just about to watch pans labyrinth for the first time. I put it on pause 1 minute in and haven't stopped the Eddie Van Halen UA-cam Tour yet. He was one of the greatest to ever touch the instrument. R.I.P. to the Guitar God, Edward.
Hearing Eddie for the first time is one of those moments I will always remember where I was and what I was doing. But beyond his fantastic guitar playing and songwriting I always remember that in an era when Rock stars were always scowling in photos, Eddie would have a million watt smile on his face the whole time. What a legend. RIP EVH.
I was about 5-7 and I had tubes in my ears because of blockage issues, but I remember quite well the tape 5150 my dad played. It was the song "Why Can't This be Love" and when Sammy sang that line I couldn't hear it quite right, so I sang "Whyyyyy can't this SPIELUUUURRR" XDDD. My dad and I laugh about this to this day, and I'm 36.
I was thinking the same thing! This interview will go down in history! My deepest sympathy and Condolences to his son Wolfgang and Valerie Bertinelli, May God bless you both!😪🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻💔💕
I am Dutch and so proud of Eddy. The best native Dutch guitarist ever. And one of the best the world has ever witnessed. A Dutch father and an Indonesian mother. His mom was genetically part Indonesian and part Dutch also. She had a Dutch surname because of her Dutch/Indonesian ancestry. I guess we can both be proud for him mentioning Indonesia as well.
Charles: I believe so. I’m sure he was concerned about his cancer returning when they did the tongue surgery 20 years earlier. I read that he was going to Germany for approximately 5 years for treatments the last 5 years of his life. This is a record for future generations of musicians. This is bittersweet for me to watch. I wish we had interviews of Charlie Christian, Bach, Beethoven and Mozart. ..... but we don’t. Not that I know of. I just feel like crying..........
Watching this I was thinking how I always had a liking for the guy though not a great fan with lots of knowledge and albums, and thinking thank God he's still with us, when so many from "my day" have passed on. So this is a real shock to learn that he has " joined "The Choir Invisibule". Damn, too bad. Really great interview. Magic how I ran into it.
Hey Eddie I'm that guy that fitted those Harley-Davidson exhaust pipes on Alex's bass drums he was kicking a duel bass drum set at the time I was working for a company called Teledyne analytical instruments in Pasadena California well it was actually in a near by city. Van Halen is one of the few bands that continued to maintain the sound that made them. They're unique sound from the start. gave them a path to there success and there sound just kept progressing. With Eddie's style of playing guitar and Alex's drumming changed the genre to a more progressive rock and roll. Eddie Van Halen I would like to commend you and thank you for your contributions to our society of music. the way you play speaks volume's. Rip my brother. One love EVH
So, I was born and 99 and obviously was born wayyyy after Van Halen come out but I will never forget. I helped a lady with a yard sale and had found a copy of Van Halen (1978) on CD and one morning I was getting ready for school and had a CD player in the bathroom so I popped that CD in before getting in the shower and i will never forget hearing eruption coming on and stopping the shower and being absolutely mind blown. By that point in my life I had been playing guitar for what seemed like forever and was a huge blink 182 fan so my guitar playing was similar to that but when I heard the tapping portion, I knew at that point I was going to do whatever I could to emulate it. Today, I am in the military and a lot of what I have become and accomplished has been accomplished from the mentality and inspiration of Eddie. Words can’t explain how much the dude meant to me. RIP!!!!
❤ i had the pleasure of meeting and actually having one of the best moments any mom could. actually met Eddie in Hartford Ct, while Van Halen was touring... the most genuine person i have ever had the courtesy of meeting, and just talking too, so kind and he did listen and answer with the best advice, I left on cloud 9 !! Val was there as well ,she was so kind and I eventold her I loved her ,watching her as well on TV,her style her personality, thier personal connection was felt in that moment!! I will never forget how blessed I was to talk to them !❤
I'm sure Wolfie is thinking the same thing! Generations come and go but the music will live FOREVER! GOD BLESS EVH! R.I.P. and hope your jammin with your Dad again!
To be honest I've never stopped watching/listening to Eddie. I'm 48 and have been a life long fan(since 1979) and Van Halen has been a part of my life at least once a week in some way shape or form for over 35 years! Especially in this depressing times because that music is what I call "instant smile"... just add Van Halen 😊
@@nathanwalsh3028 me too. I can play the intro to RIGHT NOW! piano. Always been inspired by Eddie van Halen!! I born in 76.!! I used to get yelled at by parentals for jumping on the fucking furniture with a broom playing air guitar and ruining my mom's and grandma's Tupperware by beating it to death with drumsticks to van Halen. Priceless!!🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊
Me too. I've been re-listening to a ton of Van Halen since hearing of Eddie's passing. Rest well EVH. I'm so happy my mom took me to see VH on their 1984 tour with Diamond Dave. It blew my mind!
This just wasn't just some ordinary interview. This was special because he was being honored by the Smithsonian national museum of American history. A very prestigious honor.
@Jimmie Bo James absolutely 👍 and the only reason the Smithsonian Music History Honor wasn't the main topic was because of Eddie, he was a very down to earth person, not an ego maniac. His brother Alex is also very reserved.
That one question: of all the deceased musicians out there, who do you want to play with? Eddie answers: “wow... I’d love to jam with my father again.” I teared up and smiled, thinking that is exactly what he is doing right now. What a beautiful soul.
Eddie Van Halen was indeed a master innovator and creative genius. But he played solos in concert into his sixties and was loving it! Compared to Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen lived a long AND HAPPY life!
Just a bit on the insecure side judging by how he treated his bandmates at times. Micheal Anthony didn't deserve the insults. Especially given the length of tenure in V.H. If ya didn't think he could play bass well enough he should have been given the boot ages ago. Sammy? Well, IMO he was never the right front man for Van Halen. Too many sappy ballads featuring his vocals and down playing the lead guitar which was the band's real strength and main draw. A simple "Thanks for you're service, which is no longer required. So much better with DLR but it must have been painful knowing what was said about you when you became expendable. Oh well, he's gone now. The world is not quite the same without him and his ability to squeeze the wicked sounds from his guitar.
I was really sorry and sad to hear of his passing. Some of those Van Halen tunes will forever be associated with summer and good times for me. Panama came on the radio over the weekend, I turned that bad boy up to # 11 and rocked out so hard. RIP Eddie Thanks for the memories, your incredible talent, and those fantastic videos from the 80's!!! I'll miss you.
To be fair, he was anything but humble with his ex-band mates, but he is definitely a one of a kind innovator, legend, and by all accounts was a great father and he’ll never be forgotten. I for one am extremely saddened by his death.
True true. This guy is such a beautiful spirit. He's got that lil boy smile and grin. Devil/angel. What a loss to the not just music. To humanity, 💔💔💔💔
- Of all the deceased musicians out there, if you could pick one to play with, who would that be? - I'd love to jam with my father again. What a class act. RIP Eddie Van Halen.
@@jmzochsnrtr he's not saying he is. Jesus will people please fucking relax? Its not necessary or productive to be on a hair trigger like this. You aren't making the world a better place. You are making everything worse. Chill
@@jmzochsnrtr I have no clue how your reply is in relation to the original comment. In fact, EranuUvavu points out a very touching and poignant moment...especially today with news of Eddie's passing. I think of his reply to the question and smile while thinking perhaps he's up there performing with his dad Jan again.
Yes it will inspire many young people without question. The difference is it won't have rhe same impact as it had when he came out. Because he influenced everyone after that. Many people could hear and learn eruption without ever really knowing the impact he had because of his influence and they could hear a lifetime of imitators. He influenced Everyone that came after him. It just can't have the same impact it had back then. It's impossible to recreate.
For decades and decades! It’s not just what he played, but how he played. One of the first souls to find a way to connect so truly to the electric guitar 🥴 at the right time in the right era of history in the right way. So many alignments for EVH. Historical loss for the arts 💜
He left his mark on the world FOREVER. Long after all of us in this thread are dead and gone people will still be talking about the one and only EVH. Rock In Peace the Mighty Van Halen.
@Adrian James, he may have been those things at some point in his life, but this interview was made 5 years before his passing, and look who he had become by then. A humble, kind and polite man who, despite all he has acomplished and all he meant to music in general and guitar in particular, was happy because he had the BLESSING of still having his family very close to him, sharing love with them. A man who saw his son as a truly better version of himself and was more proud of THAT than of whatever else he had achieved in life. Whose "old times I miss the most" was not the peak of fame and glory, but jammimg a little with his beloved and long gone father, the giant on whose shoulder he stood (and he knew it). In my book, that is a great human being. It may not be in yours, and that's ok.
I hadn't thought about playing guitar (or drums for that matter) til my mom took me to see them on their 1984 tour. By the end of that concert, I was begging my mom for a guitar or drums. Tried both and stuck with guitar. In part, thanks to EVH.
Unlike many interviewers she actually seems interested in what Eddie is saying. She’s like a fan who has dreamt of speaking to him forever but still has respect. Probably my favourite interview ever
It's funny. I just came to say exactly the same. She was a pleasure to watch interviewing Eddie Van Halen. Never interrupted him and just let him tell his story. A lot of big interviewers could learn from that.
@@Alacernovum Glad I'm not the only one to clearly see the dutch side of Eddie. I thought it was because I'm a dutch immigrant too, but so many of his gestures, expressions and ways of communicating sound so familiarly dutch!
This is one of the best interviews of Eddie that I have ever seen. It gets the extreme genuine side of him, tge beginning of his true musical iconic talent and his great and adorable humor. You are FOREVER Mr. Eddie Van Halen ❤😇 Thank you for the 40 some odd year's of the best darn Rock in history!! You are now jamming with your Father again in heaven! 🙏🏻🕊️🎸
"Go ahead, take my drums, I'll play your damn guitar" It's amazing that a stupid little twist of fate created one of the greatest guitarists that ever lived. God Bless you Eddie, You were awesome.
I was just shocked. I knew what he was doing with his guitar and amp company and it was fabulous BUT had no idea he had advanced cancer, NONE. Where the H)E_L_L have I been, I feel so empty. I was at a VH concert in 1981, best $7.50 I ever spent, EVER. RIP my fellow ax-ripper.
God bless this interviewer. She asks a question and lets Eddie answer without talking halfway through his first sentence. Gives him time to pause or finish a story. She made this interview a pleasure to watch and hear. We got to actually learn a little about this guitar icon without him being constantly interrupted. 😊
I thought the interviewer was awful. She had no real interest in guitars or even van halen. She seemed like she was keeping quiet because she had nothing to say and was hoping Eddie would fill the hour with his natural charisma (which he did) and she only interjected with her emergency, pre-prepared questions, when there was a lul in the conversation. She didn't engage with the things he said to encourage him to speak more about the things he was talking about, she just left him hanging like a limp cock, to fill in the agreed 1 hour interview himself, which he did because he had something to say, not because she allowed him to say it. The questions she asked were trite and unrelated to the stories he told. The only reason I watched till the end is because Eddie was interesting and engaging, not because the interviewer was skilled or the TV production was professional (which it wasn't i.e. microphone problems, unnecessary camera zooming, awkward introduction ) Ultimately at the end of the interview, if you can ignore the bad production, you realize Eddie Van Halen is incredibly interesting and was underratedley innovative in his life and would have benefited from an interviewer who knew a thing or two about music and guitars rather than a sycophant who only wanted to please the audience by simpering, smiling and being good looking.
I too got chills when he said that. So weird he said 65 and at 65 we lost one of the best musicians ever. RIP Eddie. I know you're rocking with Elvis and many other greats.
Eddie. Where does one begin to say thank you for your contribution to the world of music? Music is life. It’s the air we breathe. What a privilege to hear your story, and to revel in your genius. You left us too soon. Too soon. Rest In Peace Eddie.
Eddie was always a very shy, humble guy and that's why there aren't tons of interviews, especially just him, which makes this one really stand out. He's talking about stuff he's literally never once talked about in 40 years of being a pretty famous guy. Kudos and RIP Eddie. I truly feel a loss at your passing.
So true. Which also makes this interview so intimate and special. I always loved him. I just wish it didn’t take these special artists dying for me to pay even more attention ruin to them. RIP Eddie Van Halen 🙏🏻💕
I would not call him humble or shy. He had INTEGRITY sure but some of his interviews and conversations others recall having with him have him boasting and selling others short quite often. This is a guy that loved the spotlight and, although shared with his brother Alex, the band bore his namesake. It's important to remember people as they were, not who we wanted them to be.
Me too his note phrasings are so happy and melodic. Go search “that’s why I love you” (vh3 outtake) and try to find a guitar only cover..also Mitch malloys version is good too….Ripley is awesome guitar only before it became blood and fire..
I never contemplated him ever leaving. I’ll always remember the last time I saw him which I think was 2008 in Indianapolis and he just had this huge smile on his face the entire show in his element loving life. I think about him almost every day.
"Instead of reading a book, I wrote my own." What a simple, elegant statement that defines all great people. Eddie was the epitome of a musical genius. Glad I was around to witness that! RIP.
I mean, I always knew how intelligent he was musically, but overall he was very intelligent, introspective and humble! He never carried himself as this big rockstar. He looks a lot like your dad's cool friend that he used to jam with back in the day!
Such a special soul sweet man the love is in his music tingles through my body. I admire his drive and determination. Terrific interview, makes me sad that hes gone, but never will be forgotton. He epitimises the phrase necessity it the mother of invention, absolutely incredible mind an interesting interview he had me inthrawled on the end of my seat.
I remember in 1979, my 6th grade music class, on Friday's you were allowed to bring in music for the class to hear, one song per student. So someone brought in VH1 and put the needle down on Eruption. I could believe it was a guitar, it sounded like something from outer space. That Christmas I got my first guitar. 44 years later I still play almost everyday and all weekend. Thanks Eddie.
Interesting. Between Bowie, Petty, Peart and several other LEGENDS we’ve lost these past few years, normally I’d read your comment and agree and just move on. Ironically my dad died of CV19 on the same day - but not having had a “death in the family” for 32 yrs to deal with, I was totally blindsided emotionally and double punched in the gut by my dads passing, and then learning of Ed’s a few days later. It also has a new meaning what death and loss and grieving truly is and what it means to all of us United by music. Neil Peart was my drumming idol. The only time I’ve ever cried over the loss of any “celebrity” was when Stevie Ray passed after their chopper crashed. I was still in Wisconsin stuck in traffic heading back to Chicago from his (now) “last show” with Clapton, his brother, Stevie, and think Robert Cray - all guitar geniuses- and what a show! But then when the “whispers” started circulating at first it was Clapton’s chopper. Yet it turns out he gave Stevie his seat :( . Nobody knew for sure till morning (Same as Kobe’s accident - eerily). I welled up when I heard confirmation of what I think deep down we all feared - yet truly didn’t want to know or hear any bad news. I saw him 9x times live. Front and center many a time. Saw VH 6-7 times (both w/Dave & Sammy) too as Eddie is why I started playing guitar at age 10. Stevie got me to move my playing to the next level with harmonics and southern R&B style vs basic 3 chord Rock. It’s just sad. I’m still just barely (starting) to get over my dads passing and whilst obviously that’s 1000x times worse for me - Eddie was my earthly idol too that I respected and followed from the 80’s and on. Thanks for writing what you did. Short and sweet - but hit me right in the heart 💜
This is easily the greatest interview done with EVH, thank you Denise Quan, you did an amazing job, you did your research and knew your stuff. So many don't.
yeah, I got the idea of having an _award winning classically trained piano player_ on drums in my rock band ... that was a good idea; we made more money from the wallets than we did from the register
Eddie overshadowing everyone else was his one weakness as far as I'm concerned. Personally I think Van Halen could have done so much more with Sammy Hagar, as he was also a pretty decent guitar player, Alex, as he's a great drummer, but also Michael Anthony, who's a great vocalist besides being a good bassist. But Eddie's ego was so large that he just couldn't let anyone but himself shine, including his own brother. Yes, during concerts Alex got his almost mandatory drum solo, but compared to Eddie's many solos it was very short and a one-time thing.
I actually agree wholeheartedly it was Alex that made me put my drum sticks down after hearing 1984 I knew I could never play what he ,( Alex) did but somehow I instinctively knew I could play a lot of what Eddie was doing not all of it but a bunch of it for sure so against my parents better wishes I laid my drum sticks down forever and ran with the Guitar...Alex Van Halen is by far one of the Greatest Drummers in Rock n Roll.. period.
The people there have no clue, how lucky they were. What a great interview, RIP Eddie Van Halen, you were and always will be my favorite guitarist. 🙏🤙🤘
i grew up in Los Angeles.. saw van halen at the stardust club in Hollywood in the 70's (stardust had a disco room and separate rock show room) also saw the guys in Denver in 1980's (*Dave nearly got hit in the head by an audience thrown Frisbee, remained perfectly cool, and smoked a 'thrown on stage' doobie like a real fiend).. best shows and rock music you could ever see, or experience..
Today, he’s my favorite, too. Die Hard Bruce Willis had a jazzier friend with right hand hammering-“tapping” is a better word for describing the technique. About tablature, I learned it from Happy Traum’s book, Fingerpicking Styles For Guitar in 1973. I taught from it, tuned and moved pianos in early 80s. As soon as van Halen’s CD came out, it became the first demo we’d use selling sound systems.
She is such a sweet, nonconfrontational interviewer. This whole piece had the sense of a guitar clinic, except it doesn't bore non-musicians. Incredible dialogue, thank you so much for uploading. RIP EVH.
I'm an old man now...60...I was so involved in my life that I didn't find out that Eddie had passed away three yrs prior...I was heart broken...and cried really hard bc I grew up with his music and had a lot of great memories with VH...
Well, I'm 58 years old. I live in South Florida. Love Van Halen you know they were introduced in 1972 as Mammoth. David Lee Roth went to Eddie. True story told him to change the name to Van Halen before their album debuted February 10th. I believe 1978 the rest is history. David Lee Roth is a killer dude. I like him. He's got everything. He's a killer singer. I like him. I didn't really care too much for Sammy. Sammy is by himself. He's a lot better anyways man. Every single time I hear Van Halen the tears come grew up with him. You know like everybody else did. Van Halen is the goat, the bomb their music is unsurpassed and it's got to be played. Wolfie you need to play your dad's music and your uncle anyways. Sorry guys, I had to put my two cents into this. I'm watching this again. Just crying. I can't believe he's gone either. Still over 3 years now. Unbelievable rest in peace Eddie. You're playing for God. Rip it up rock and roll Long Live
I remember the day I heard he died and I remember a heat wave going through me much like a time when I shattered my wrist in a fall. I actually had to sit down. It was like the best part of my youth just blew up . I was fortunate enough to see them on the 1984 tour . I’m a fan through and through. There are many that disagree with me but I thought that the Sammy era was just as good as the Dave era. It was different and it was exactly what they needed to keep it going. I mean they rocked it straight through grunge . I did not however think that Gary Cherone was a good pick and I don’t think he fit at all. I do know that none of that mattered to me because I was there to see and hear what that man right there was going to do next . I really wanted to see him live again and procrastinated because I took for granted that he was going to be there, I actually got goose bumps when he did that demo on here. Thanks Eddie Van Halen for back ground music of my youth . There is no one better in my opinion.
First time seeing this interview. Not only was Eddie a phenomenal guitarist, but what and incredible individual and innovator!! RIP Eddie. You are so missed!!!!
I’m still grieving over the loss of Eddie. He was such a gifted, musician and humble man. In my much younger years, I attended so many California Van Halen concerts with friends, and boyfriends. Always inching my way to the front of the stage. 😊 I have some amazing, funny and heartwarming stories of interactions with the band on and off stage. Eddie, Alex and Michael were true gentlemen. I’ll forever be in awe over Eddie’s magical, guitar playing techniques. Seeing some of the newer videos, or taped recordings, from concerts I attended, when I was young, on UA-cam, is a true walk down Memory Lane. I have all the eight tracks, vinyls, cassettes, and cds from the very beginning. It started when I was a teen, and I’m now 58. Our son was introduced to VH at a young age. He took years of electric guitar lessons. But just like Eddie, he writes his own music. Never using sheet music. Our son is an awesome guitarist and can play many of Eddie’s music, just by listening. I’m still getting weepy over Eddies passing. But, finding a safe places to share memories and thoughts about all of our experiences, with Eddie and Van Halen is genuinely helping me emotionally. Thanks everyone. ♥️
It is a huge loss to the Music World!! EVH was a musical genius!! So sad and feeling the loss as well !!! Loved you EVH. Rest in peace and keep on Rocking out in Heaven 🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️
She’s a great interviewer. I’d heard Eddie Van Halen was notoriously shy. She made him comfortable enough he really opened up. She didn’t force any questions and had the respect to let him finish what he was saying before asking another question. Very classy.
He was shy but he wasn't aloof. He had class & was apparently very kind to people individually. I don't think there's any guitarist who's more personally likeable than Steve Vai, but Eddie's way up there. This interview really tells us his story - it was about music, and Eddie was destined to be the best at whichever one he chose. I'm happy he (reluctantly) chose guitar! Not taking anything away from the world's best rock guitarists, but Eddie brought a happy, bright countenance. It was my BMX era (I was 13yrs old when I first heard VH) & Eddie did something that was so rare for guitarists in the genre - he smiled. He had fun. Slash, Joe Perry, Mick Mars, etc - all the era's guitarists, were dark, hidden behind hair, scowled constantly. They were awesome, but Eddie brought a little humility to the 'look', he stood apart. His sound & tone was so effing incredible & he gave SO much to my youth, not to mention the industry. Never got to see him play live. As we speak I'm trying to learn Panama. RIP, Eddie.

blueknight.. did you watch the video? Have you heard Van Halen’s music? If not.. well he reinvented equipment (he has guitars in the Smithsonian and changed the way amps disperse power), he changed the way guitar sheet music is read (the world had to add tapping tabs) he added a whole new style of play and sound dimension to the guitar and music in general (tapping, nut change, effects, etc). This is the short list
@@FFLL2112 Well seeing as I'm 59 years old, pretty sure I've heard van halan's music. But he still hasn't done anything to earn the title of hero. Yes he is a great musician and I'm not arguing that point.
At least not in this or the next generation, that's for Damn sure and the generation 60 or 70 years from now will have to pull a miracle out of their arse to get to anything remotely close to Eddie Van halen I just can't see how it's possible, given the state of music today.
Dear Ms. Quan, Thank you for doing an outstanding job interviewing Edward Van Halen. The way you just let him talk without talking over him/interrupting him is the hallmark of an accomplished interviewer. Your smiles and such easily point to you too were so deeply intrested in Edward's story like the rest of us. Like Edward's music, your interview, I will also cherish for the rest of my life. You see so many UA-camrs playing EVH music. They say they play it better. There is only one Eddie. HE WROTE the music. They need to remember they are the imitators. God bless your soul. I am so fortunate to have lived during his era. Van Halen = Timeless
I didn't realize what a smart cookie Eddie was until watching this interview. Also, I thought the interviewer did a nice job. She let Eddie talk. And that's the most important thing!😊
Denise Quan did an amazing job of letting EVH express himself. Perfect. This is such a great glimpse of what I imagine to be a very private person. He will always be missed.

Yep. I am in Connecticut. Such a great interview. So sad. He was one of the greats. Ultimate California rock and roll band.
Yeah man cancer just sucks
me, from Peru
yes, currently.
You bet.
That impish grin!
For a dude who is a rock-n-roll icon, he is remarkably and authentically humble, real and endearing. No airs whatsoever.
Cause he is dutch :P
It comes from his background definitely..hard working people the Dutch

I am Dutch and so proud of Eddy. The best native Dutch guitarist ever. And one of the best the world has ever witnessed. A Dutch father and an Indonesian mother. His mom was genetically part Indonesian and part Dutch also. She had a Dutch surname because of her Dutch/Indonesian ancestry. I guess we can both be proud for him mentioning Indonesia as well.
It's spelled Eddie

I believe so.
Truly!
I've watched this a few times recently thinking it's so much cooler than some sensationalized ghostwritten memoir.
A very humble man indeed.
He was not only a great guitarist, but also a great as a person. RIP Sir.
Absolutely spot on. Let Eddie’s and Al’s story be an inspiration to us all!
Ed was a great songwriter too. Those songs are legendary.
So many riffs!!
Was he really tho ?
Idk how he was as a person, but no doubt he’s a legend!

😄 Hell yes he does!
How do I LOL?
Get a job. 😄🤷🏼♂️🌸
RIP!!!!
His music was life-changing for me, too, since 1984. It will never leave you. Thanks for your service, btw.

To be honest I've never stopped watching/listening to Eddie. I'm 48 and have been a life long fan(since 1979) and Van Halen has been a part of my life at least once a week in some way shape or form for over 35 years!

Eddie Van Halen was indeed a master innovator and creative genius.
But he played solos in concert into his sixties and was loving it! Compared to Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen lived a long AND HAPPY life!
Such a real human being ... His smile is memorable and sincere. RIP, dear man. You are a gift to the world.

(: Very True ... ❤
Certainly left his mark on this planet, many more young upcoming musicians will discover eruption and be inspired. Rest In Peace 😣

Adrian James who aint . Bless you .

She made this interview a pleasure to watch and hear. We got to actually learn a little about this guitar icon without him being constantly interrupted. 😊
That's good because her questions are pretty stale.
Lady who did the interview is AWESOME - that's how you do an interview folks - you actually let the subject talk.
@@TS-qq7vr Lol. Maybe, but her style drew some interesting answers from Eddie I thought.
@@elmhszady Exactly 😊
The only reason I watched till the end is because Eddie was interesting and engaging, not because the interviewer was skilled or the TV production was professional (which it wasn't i.e. microphone problems, unnecessary camera zooming, awkward introduction )
Ultimately at the end of the interview, if you can ignore the bad production, you realize Eddie Van Halen is incredibly interesting and was underratedley innovative in his life and would have benefited from an interviewer who knew a thing or two about music and guitars rather than a sycophant who only wanted to please the audience by simpering, smiling and being good looking.
"It's not like, 'I can't wait until I turn 65, and retire'."

I totally agree
In a way Eddie will life forever through his music
@dcareyHQvideos almost every video/interview I have seen he was smoking 😢
This is easily the greatest interview done with EVH, thank you Denise Quan, you did an amazing job, you did your research and knew your stuff. So many don't.
Please!
She was too mechanical trying to be something she wasn't.
I agree great job MS Quan. Ty for saying so.
Yep
Absolutely - this is, sadly, the best interview EVH ever did. Fascinating and compelling. RIP
Great interview because of Eddie's insightful yarns, not her "insightful" questions.
The absolute best Eddie interview. What a humble guy.
Great guy humble ,yes...likeable
Very loving. Absolute genius. Very loving.
So glade you shared this
R.I.P. Eddie ❤️🙏
Broooo nooo wayy i just learned about bro crazzyyy
Alex Van Halen doesn't get enough credit, awesome drummer, one of the greatest of all time. Eddie just overshadowed him.
They were all superb in that band. Both as musicians and performers.
I always felt like Alex wanted to avoid the spot light
yeah, I got the idea of having an _award winning classically trained piano player_ on drums in my rock band ... that was a good idea; we made more money from the wallets than we did from the register
It's like having Mozart or Beethoven right before your very eyes! A very humble and passionate gentleman! A Man Among Men!
RIP...Rock in Paradise
i grew up in Los Angeles.. saw van halen at the stardust club in Hollywood in the 70's (stardust had a disco room and separate rock show room) also saw the guys in Denver in 1980's (*Dave nearly got hit in the head by an audience thrown Frisbee, remained perfectly cool, and smoked a 'thrown on stage' doobie like a real fiend).. best shows and rock music you could ever see, or experience..
Him and Randy Rhoads
She is such a sweet, nonconfrontational interviewer. This whole piece had the sense of a guitar clinic, except it doesn't bore non-musicians. Incredible dialogue, thank you so much for uploading. RIP EVH.
I'm an old man now...60...I was so involved in my life that I didn't find out that Eddie had passed away three yrs prior...I was heart broken...and cried really hard bc I grew up with his music and had a lot of great memories with VH...
I agree frank same here, I’m 60 as well but the new 60 isn’t old lol!
60 isn't old. Still in the 3rd quarter
@@jimsmith7387 thanks, brother
God I’m gonna miss this guy. He always had a smile on his face. So upbeat. Props to his Dad.
notice that; involved and engaged parents
And to his mom for the piano lessons!
I love this interview. She did an outstanding job not interrupting and just letting Eddie tell his story.
She’s a babe too
Great interview. What a creative mind. Similar to Tom Scholtz of Boston except Tom was a computer guy. But they both were tinkerers

+Brian B -- Second time for me (I saw it a year or two ago) and much more special this time around.
Eddie never gave a bad interview. He was always smiling, and happy to be there.
Thank you. Enjoyed reading your comment. Good times, to be sure. Miss those days, too.

RIP, Eddie.
Mitch malloy performing Dream on and open arm's on acoustic guitar is absolutely incredible. Please check mitch out on youtube, and subscribe and hit the bell for notifications and don't forget to leave a comment, Mitch often replys back, he loves his fans... thank you
Rip Eddie. He was an absolute legend😞
Baconator James plus she wasn't star struck" treating him respectfully & even using a sense of humour here/ there which is everything when your a shy soul.....
I believe that gorgeous woman could get anybody to open up
Eddie was a tone chaser. He figured out how to get the sound he wanted and rocked the world.

This interview is great but also brings tears to my eyes. Not sure if it’s joy, sadness or both. What a fantastic and very humble human being! ❤
I had no idea he was this much of a genius. An engineer’s mind. Gifted. Blessed. ❤️
My thoughts exactly.
I love how humble he is and how he makes sure to mention his bro and give props to his folks. RIP Eddie Van Halen.

Yes. You can tell that how important his family is to him.
Eddie died today. Hard to take. He was my age. RIP
I love you Eddie! Rest in the Heavens til I get there♡

Yes very upset over his passing - this is a really good interview - he seems quite down to earth in this - you can see how much he revered his parents
RIP Eddie and damn... you're old.
"You play until the day you die. It's not like - I can't wait until I'm 65 and retire...." RIP
This was simply fantastic to see. I miss Eddie, but he is just right on the other side jamming with his Dad with that big smile on his face!🌟
Love his last quote of the interview... "Whatever music is out there... there's always room for more". Rest in peace, Eddie...
Dutch, indonesian and american.
And one of the best musician in the world.
R.I.P. Ed Van Halen.
@Karson Kalabo Yes, a very good mix of positive things.
And yet some Americans want to reject immigrants.
@@BurnleyNuts NO... people are against "ILLEGAL" immigration... if you come in through the front door you are welcomed and shown friendship... as Eddie's parents and their children did... If you sneak in through the back door ... well... If you don't understand by this point, as many apparently don't, then there is little more I can say. Needless to say... come in legally and become a member of the family... Not the klan...but the family.

Yes Indonesia mother, Dutch father, Turned out Handsome!, An turned the world upside down with your Guitar Playing!, When the man up stairs made you!.. he knew what he was doing!...
I bet you there were a lot of jaw dropper’s in that room when Eddie talked about being a minority and who his two best friends as a kid were. RIP Icon.
From dirt poor immigrant to guitar legend, American icon, and humble to the highest order. A true Hero!
Jack PRick You nailed it.
Jack pprick, TOTALLY!... eddies humility is what strikes me most. Then his ability to play (choke) a guitar. I first daw van halen at madison square garden new york city. They opened for ted nugent!
What did he do that makes him a hero? He grew up around music, got good at it and bam, a great career. That doesn't make him a hero.
blueknight.. did you watch the video?
Eddie’s a Legend
One of the best guitarists to ever walk on this Earth
Ahem.... "The Best" 🤘👍
Rest In Peace Eddie Van Halen. There will never be another guitar player to change the world like you did.
Nailed it🎸🎸
At least not in this or the next generation, that's for Damn sure
and the generation 60 or 70 years from now will have to pull a miracle out of their arse to get to anything remotely close to Eddie Van halen
I just can't see how it's possible, given the state of music today.
“Instead of reading a book, I wrote my own”. Eddie Van Halen~ No comment could ever be as true as that.
Dear Ms. Quan,
Thank you for doing an outstanding job interviewing Edward Van Halen. The way you just let him talk without talking over him/interrupting him is the hallmark of an accomplished interviewer. Your smiles and such easily point to you too were so deeply intrested in Edward's story like the rest of us.
Like Edward's music, your interview, I will also cherish for the rest of my life.

it broke my heart to hear that and to hope he is playing with his father again.
and then a little while later he says, "You just keep on playing until the day you die. It's not like you wait until you turn 65 and then retire..."

@@Guitarburt that statement from Eddie really pulled my heartstring.
You see so many UA-camrs playing EVH music. They say they play it better. There is only one Eddie. HE WROTE the music. They need to remember they are the imitators. God bless your soul. I am so fortunate to have lived during his era. Van Halen = Timeless
These types of interviews will be so treasured.
I didn't realize what a smart cookie Eddie was until watching this interview. Also, I thought the interviewer did a nice job. She let Eddie talk. And that's the most important thing!😊
An absolute genius and the nicest guy ever. So so sad he is no longer with us. He was effortlessly lovable.

Denise Quan did an amazing job of letting EVH express himself. Perfect. This is such a great glimpse of what I imagine to be a very private person. He will always be missed.
