    ============================================================
    Hey, Doctor AJ here from Stronglife Physiotherapy. If you feel intense spinning or vertigo when you roll over in bed, get into or out of bed or when looking up or down then this video is for you. I’ll show you how to instantly fix it with a very specific maneuver that you can do at home.
    I shared this a few years back and it quickly became my most watched video because it works so well, this is an updated version with better audio.
    This technique only works for vertigo caused by BPPV. This type of vertigo happens when crystals in the inner ear become loose and enter the semi-circular canal. When these crystals move inside the canal, it creates a false sensation of spinning that is very intense but only lasts 30 to 60 seconds and is only triggered by certain head movements like looking up or down, getting in and out of bed. These attacks feel like the room is spinning and can cause nausea and vomiting. Some people have BPPV attacks for a few weeks others will have them years, either way it’s important to know how to take of them yourself so you don’t have to suffer longer than is necessary. I recommend saving this video for future reference.
    Before getting started, I want to give credit to Dr. Carol Foster who came up with this maneuver. It’s called the Half Somersault Maneuver, you’ll see why as we’re doing it. I also want to make sure you are safe when doing this maneuver. It is very safe to do but you will get dizzy so you need to make sure you are in a safe place. Doing it on the floor is fine just make sure the area around you is clear so if you tip over you won’t hit anything. You can also do it on your bed if it is big enough so that you don’t fall off if you become dizzy. Most people are able to do this safely on their own, but it can be helpful to have someone there to help if you are unsure. Also, be prepared for the spinning and nausea that this will cause, it will come in waves but it will pass. Some people do throw up so have a trash can near by just in case.
    First, start in a kneeling position. Quickly tilt your head back so you are looking up at the ceiling. This may cause some spinning, which is OK and expected. You can close your eyes if you prefer. Breathe slowly and deeply for 30 seconds or until the feeling of spinning stops.
    Now lean forward onto your hands keeping your head straight, as if you are going to do a somersault. Your head should be completely upside down and tucked under in front of your knees with your hands supporting your on both sides of your head. Hold this position for 30 seconds or as long as it takes for the spinning to stop.
    Now turn your head toward the elbow of the side your affected ear is on. This will be about 45 degrees or halfway to your shoulder. Keep your head in this position for 30 seconds or until the spinning stops completely.
    Keeping you head turned and quickly raise your head so it is level with your back, you’ll probably feels some dizziness, but keep steady and hold this position until all the spinning stops or at least 30 seconds.
    Finally, with your head still turned quickly raise your head to an upright position and return to a kneeling position. Hold this position until the spinning stops completely.
    After you’re done, take some time to reassess and see if you still have dizziness. Shake your head side to side and up and down. If you still have dizziness you may need to repeat the maneuver. It can take several times to get full relief.
    If you need more help because you’re scared of making the vertigo worse or you can’t get down on your knees, or if run into problems doing the maneuver, or if you want to learn how to stop having these vertigo attacks in the future, I created a video course that walks you though the whole process step by step including what to do if your vertigo changes or gets worse after doing the maneuver. Click the link in the description to learn more, but either way I wish you the best in overcoming your vertigo!

    There needs to be a public awareness campaign about this very scary condition/experience. I was pushed by medical professionals to go to the emergency room and have a barrage of tests (concern about a possible stroke even though I had no other symptoms besides the dizziness and nausea). I found my own info online about BPPV - it took three days of performing the Epley Manuever without results. My extreme spinning and nausea occurred for hours after waking up. One try of the Half Somersault technique (with a bucket next to me in case) finally did the trick.

      Yes! There are so many unnecessary ER visits due to BPPV. Ultimately it's better to be safe than sorry but a little information on this topic is really helpful to get people the right treatment more quickly. The Half Somersault Maneuver is amazing at helping this condition, so glad it was helpful for you!

    BPPV hit me a month ago when I rolled over one morning to get out of bed. How scary it was...I thought I was going to meet my maker as the whole world was spinning violently and I began throwing up from intense nausea. After a trip to the ER, bloodwork, EKG, and CAT scan to the head, the scary stuff was ruled out. I was diagnosed with BPPV, given drugs to ease the vertigo and nausea (which didn't help much), and scheduled to see a physical therapist the next day. By the time the next day came, the vertigo was gone. However, the physical therapist did show me how to perform the home Epley Maneuver. All was good. Fast forward to this past weekend. I rolled over in bed to get up and it hit me again. Try as I might, I could not get past the second step of the Epley Maneuver without intense vertigo, nausea, and vomiting. I started looking at youtube videos and discovered Dr. Foster's half-summersault maneuver. What a charm! I did not get the intense vertigo and nausea I did from the Epley Maneuver, and it worked. I had to do it 3 times (waiting 15 minutes between tries as recommended by Dr. Foster), but it did subside. This video is the real deal!

      Omg, this was me the same thing happened to me and the Epley maneuver made it worst for me after I saw a therapist. It started to happen on both sides last night. I was lucky to get another appointment with a vestibular doctor who prescribed me steroids and is going to do a balance exam next week however he did tell me to try this exercise I'm going to try it now and see if it works with steroid I can't really feel the dizziness but it a tingle feeling so hopefully it works

    I've had bouts of BPPV for several years now. I've always done the Epley manoeuvre to get rid of it with a fair amount of success. This manoeuvre is easier actually. I had to do it this morning and after feeling utterly dire beforehand and while carrying it out, I feel better now than I have for days. It's weird because here in Italy they seem largely unaware of BPPV, putting absolutely every case of vertigo down to "Cervicale" (due to neck tension - their go-to for nearly everything), something I'd never even even heard of prior to living here, and "labyrinthitis". I mentioned BPPV to my doctor once and I had the feeling he had no idea what I was talking about, which is a bit worrying!! Thanks for this easy solution!

    hello, Dr. AJ! I got diagnosed with BPPV late last year and had another attack just this week. As I searched for some exercise, I came across your video, which is where I found out about this new maneuver (previously I only knew about the Epley maneuver). You mentioned in your video to "treat" a specific ear, but when I tried this out, I don't really feel the spinning sensation on either sides of my body/ear, but only felt it when I tilt my head back (center). I tried doing this maneuver one time for my left ear and assessed myself right after, as what you did in the video. I didn't feel the spinning when I tilted my head on either side, but rather felt it in between, i.e. as my head moved along the center/front. In this case, is it better to just do this maneuver for both ears? Or, would this be a different case altogether?
    I did feel some relief after the first try, compared to doing the Epley maneuver earlier. So your video has been of great help!!

      You're welcome! In some cases, yes it can come back. For some people the crystals dissolve and don't cause more problems. For others they remain and can eventually re-enter the inner ear canals and cause vertigo again. Vitamin D3 supplements can help reduce recurrence. I recommend a type with K2 in it as well. I also have a comprehensive vertigo protocol that goes into way more depth which you can find here: bppvcured.com

    You say to "turn your head to the side that the affected ear is on" (2:40), but how does someone know which side is causing vertigo if there isn't pain in either ear?

    Dear Dr. AJ,
    I had suffered from BPPV and canal paresis since I was only 4. My neurologist prescribed betahistin, it didn't seem to help that much, and the illness tortured me to the age of 18 or so. Since then, I had very little symptoms, but about 10 days ago, all of a sudden a continuous dizziness started that is only gone when I lay down. Today, it became so severe (despite of the fact I took betahistin again and started doing vestibular exercises) that I could hardly leave my chair at work. Last week I contacted an otorhinolaryngologist, but I only have appointments for MRI and otoneurologic examinations for next week. I'm really seeking for answers what can cause such an uncomfortable and prolonged illness, since such a young age. I watched this video, did the exercises 3 times and they seem to help a bit. I still feel very dizzy while walking, but at least the worst of my vertigo is over. Thank you.

    • @StronglifePhysiotherapy
      @StronglifePhysiotherapy  2 роки тому +3

      Once you get all the crystals repositioned you shouldn't have any more spinning. It could be that you got most the crystals out, but there are some remaining still causing spinning. BPPV attacks are only triggered by head movements. Vestibular migraine has different triggers like certain foods, screens or other causes and isn't related as much to head movements. Hope that helps! We also have a program that takes you through the whole process at bppvcured.com

      Thanks for your response, it does make sense. I feel after the exercises each day it has gotten better and helped the vertigo like symptoms not as intense.
      But it’s like my brain is still caught in the trip of motion, some faint wobble sense motion still in the brain still. Is it possible
      Could it take time for the brain to settle after a chronic episode of vm or bbbp?
      And during this phase, should I keep doing the exercises? As it almost feels it’s nearly going!
      ( been suffering for a while now 5-6months at least, & first time ever in this horrible situation)
      Also I had been proscribed Propranolol 10mg, should I take it to help that bit more, not sure If you no much about it I just hate medication and try to avoid.
      The medication is meant to help with vestibular migraine symptoms and anxiety as well?
      Many thanks !

    this maneuver usually works on me. i did it again this morning on my right side, which stopped the slight spinning of the room, but as i was resting and recovering from the nausea, the room started to spin again whenever i looked downwards. it stopped when i focused my eyes straight. this was the first time i experienced this. so i tried the deep head hanging exercise and then the half somersault move about 15 mins later, but neither stopped the spin when i bent forward or looked downwards. i'm trying not to look down as i'm typing this and hoping it will go away soon. is this common as well for bppv? and is there another exercise i could do to alleviate those symptoms? thank you.

      There's not really a limit. It takes most people 3-5 attempts to get the spinning to fully stop but you can do more than that if needed in a day or wait until another day. If you get too nauseated you can give yourself more time in between attempts.

    about a month ago the first episode of bvvp: I couldn't move my head for 3 days. I did the epley maneuver 2 times. the first time it was traumatic, almost a panic attack, but after that I felt better. I did the epley again and in the last step I had a lot of dizziness (more than in all the other 3 steps) now after 2 weeks I have learned to get in and out of bed very slowly so as not to have dizziness. Do I expect it to improve over time or is it time to perform this maneuver?

      If you still have dizziness you may still have some free floating crystals. Doing this maneuver should help clear the rest of them out. Sometimes you have to do the maneuver several times to get full relief.

      Calcium levels may be a factor because low levels of vitamin D are linked to increased risk of BPPV and Vitamin D helps our body regulate calcium. I highly recommend a Vitamin D3/K2 combo for those that have BPPV. You can do the same maneuver sitting or standing. I can't drive, even walking makes me nauseous. I await an ENT appt to diagnose BPPV or Meniere's. If it was the latter do these exercises help?

    • @StronglifePhysiotherapy
      @StronglifePhysiotherapy  Рік тому +1

      Glad you're going to see an ENT. If walking is difficult and causes nausea, I suspect it's not BPPV since it seems to be a longer lasting form of vertigo. BPPV has very short very intense vertigo attacks. Meniere's or vestibular neuritis are possibilities among others. This exercise will only help BPPV, not Meniere's or any other type of vertigo, unfortunately. It also won't make other types of vertigo worse. Doing it can be useful to rule BPPV in or out. Hope you're able to get relief soon!
