All the time while growing up, my mother used to talk about my hair not being shiny and always slapping grease in it. As an adult, a hair dresser told me that our hair doesn’t shine because the texture is matte. That changed my life! After that I didn’t care what my mother said.

Lord, the way he freely gives us these facts. I was relaxed for 32 years. I went natural last year. I kept trying to figure out why my relaxed hair was always shiny and my natural hair isn't as shiny. In my opinion my natural hair is healthier than my relaxed hair was so I couldn't figure out why my healthy natural hair isn't as shiny as my damaged relaxed hair was. Thanks for the information. Greatly appreciated.

I think you’ve just explained my hair type with that rough/bumpy surface texture. My curl pattern is a loose curl but my surface texture “feels” and looks more afro like. Like there’s a lot of fluff and lack of shine. I thought my hair was just coarse (which it is) but I’ve had trouble describing the way my hair looks and feels. You and black girl curls are revolutionizing my hair!

Yep, my roots tend to be dry. I do sweat from my scalp. I never realized the connection, thanks for highlighting. I find that jojoba oil + water applied at the roots on wash day helps to combat some of the dryness and keep the roots silky.

You are like my hair Yoda! I have this argument with my stylist often as I refuse hair shine or sheen products after she does my hair. I deep condition every wash, use leave-in and a bit of moisturizer and top with argan oil. Dear Linwood: I’m an older woman that would appreciate you going deep on this question. Like many people, I decided to let my hair go gray when the pandemic took over. My hair is natural and I really don’t want to go back to using a dark color. But my gray hair is just not popping 😂. So, I want to go platinum or silver. Just to enhance my hair. Is there something I can do at home to go platinum or silver?. My gray hair is like three different textures- silky in the back, soft coiled on the sides and very course and tight on the top. Bottomline I would appreciate any help/suggestions you could offer. Thank you. Blessings to you and the family.

Very helpful! Thank you! The silly thing with my abused hair (years of bad haircare practice) is that the texture is different in various areas of my head (always been that way) and at the back (where it was always more soft curly-ish silky-ish) the hair rarely ever feels dry while on the sides of my head the hair feels more bumpy (always was except for around the ears) and it varies a lot in terms of how dry it is. The front is a mess more often than not... This video is really great... At least my daughters won't make the same mistakes I made.

I grabbed a small section toward the front to check it. It’s roughly 12 inches long, and after the first 4-5 inches from the scalp, it begins to gradually feel dry, with the ends of course being the dryest.

Thank you God for Linwood's in depth explanations! I'm 58 years old in July and I have been trying to figure this out since I was in elementary school im not lying. My press and curl stylist when I was 8 told me it was because my hair was kinky and only straight hair could reflect shine and that is why my hair was shiny when she first pressed it but wouldn't be shiny when I came back in 2 weeks. But even at 8 years old that did not make sense to me because when I would go back in 2 weeks only my roots would be kinky why were the straight ends not shining? But you know she was my moms age and back in the day you did NOT question elders. I just said yes mam but I kept wondering about this. In college I got my hair relaxed and still only shiny that first week even though my hair was bone straight from chemicals... made no sense. Now someone has finally made sense of this. They say you learn something new everyday and I have learned the answer I have literally been waiting g 50 years to know LOL.

👀 I think I just figured out my tangle problem. I get weird knotting/ tangles like 2 inches from my roots. Never at the root and not for most of the length- just around that 2 inch mark. I’ve gon through all kinds of detangling techniques and various brushes. I sweat from my head and my roots do tend to be drier than my ends! And since my hair has a lot of shrinkage, that 2 inch mark makes sense! I never put it together until now, but I will be testing this theory immediately.

Thank you for the tip about sweating from the scalp. That is an ongoing issue for me. But, my hair isn't necessarily dry and can get mushy after a lot of co-washing in the summer. I will be experimenting with frequency again this summer.
