- UPDATE: • $1500 CUSTOM SKI BOOT ...
I've been skiing on some old rental boots for over 100 days. Everytime I've tried to get new boots, they have sucked on the slopes. This week, I decided it was finally time to take the plunge and splurge on getting custom fitted boots. The fitter created a custom liner and insole for me. I thought this was going to be a magical solution for my problems, but it didn't quite work out that way...

Hi Angelina! When I bought my boots, they were super tight and hurt my feet too. I talked with the ski shop and they suggested wearing the boots at home to give them time to mold to my feet before going skiing. I would have the boots on while watching TV, etc. After many hours of wearing them at home, they felt great when I got back on the slopes. Just stick with the tighter boots and once they're broken in, they will feel fine. Good luck!
I will give that a try. Thank you!
I've been skiing for 30 years and rental boots were the bane of my existence lol. They all suck and can kill your day. I bought boots over 10 years ago and they were worth every penny.
The order in which you buckle your boots could also make a difference in how they feel! Always start with the buckle across your ankle and never over tighten the buckles going across the top of your feet. Took me a really long time to get use to my custom boots and i hated all the pain. It's worth it once they break in!
What kind of pain did you have before you got used to them?
@@angelinaoutside literally everything was hurting lol. The big issue was my pinky toes going numb, side of the feet felt squished, and arches would feel like they were on fire. Another big problem was pain in my calves.
Went to a custom fitter, found out I was in too big of a boot. This new boot is very snug. Almost suspiciously too snug. But, after skiing in them a 3-4 times, they are literally perfect. Just took some time.
Find where your buckles are most comfortable. Once you do that, try to replicate how you put your boots on so you can consistently get the same fit and feel each time you ski. Don’t be afraid to start each ski day with your boots a tiny bit loose and tighten them as needed throughout the day. Sorry this was so long. I went through a lot of pain trying to get the right boots so I know how you feel!
@@Kylmayfi1 Yep arches on fire is my main problem. Do your arches not hurt anymore in the new boot? I thought my arches hurt in my last boot because it was too big, but these new custom fit ones hurt even more.
@@angelinaoutside i remember you saying your feet were pronating. did the arch support help or cause more pain? if so, maybe try the original footbeds that came with your boots to see if that makes a difference. i have flat feet and any type of arch support that are too tall really hurt my feet.
Also, check out "Correctly Buckle your Ski Boots- Bootorials Ep.9" by Patriot Footbeds. It made me realize i was buckling my boots wrong.
The arch support seems to have made it worse. I will try to switch out the insoles and see. Thanks for the tips!
Finding well-fitting boots is THE worst part of skiing. Maybe a new lens for your goggles, too? 😀
Glad I came across your channel today. Well made telling of your boot journey.
Thank you! The lens are working surprisingly well 🤣
Thanks for starting this channel!! Its so rare/hard to find fellow Asian-American skiers let alone female. Skiing needs more diversity! (I swear its like 97% white atm haha)
No. You sound racist. We don’t need to force diversity on anything.
@@harrynguyen2807 I'm not, I just want as many people skiing as possible! 85-90% of my friends/co-workers are white, my gf is white, my boss is black... I just want the get the joy of skiing out to everyone.
Well, maybe you are in the wrong country and come here to Japan. I rarely see other white people like me skiing.@@doriansebastian8065

This is a great video. Thanks for showing what a lot of people unfortunately have to contend with when trying to get some new boots. I think that maybe the Injection liners might not be the best for your feet. Or it has been injected a with a bit too much foam. Also the footbed could be contributing. But you should maybe try these boots with the stock liners (if they still have them) and see how your feet react. That would at least give you some feedback if you are in the right shell. Best of luck, do a follow up video!
Surefoot likely won't have the original stock liners as they work with Lange to buy the shells for their foam liners. Maybe drop in to another store and see if you can find an Intuition liner. Might help a lot.
Hi Angelina! I just found your channel. As an intermediate skiier, loving your content. I also began skiing a few years ago as an adult. I'd love to see future content around how you improved and worked through issues including fear of speed (the usual early intermediate stuff haha).
That's a great idea! I have a lot of thoughts on this. Thank you :)
I feel your pain... I have Dalbello DS MX 120... I have wide feet... I went to a boot fitter.. they are like that's all we can do... I bought a heat gun $20 ... laser temp $15 ... and a boot stretcher $70 from Amazon... heated them up to 275 degrees in the areas I needed and now I have the best fitting boots ever... put some extra padding on the stretcher in the areas that really need it if need be... leave the lining in the boot when doing it... cool them off outside etc ... repeat if necessary...
Do you have any updates on your boots? I’m coming out in a few weeks and really wanted to try to Surefoot boots but not i might be second guessing. Would you buy them again? What was so difficult with them in which you felt you had to learn how to ski again?
I've been giving minor updates in my vlogs since this video, but I haven't fully resolved the situation yet. I've been doing most of my skiing recently on my old boots. Some people really love Surefoot, and it seems like I'm having an especially hard time with mine. So part of the difficulty is getting used to the stiffness, but it was really hard to focus on getting my form right because I was in so much pain. If you decide to try it out, my suggestion would be to not be shy with going back to them for adjustments as it is part of the deal.
Angela- I feel your pain. I’m an East coast skier cranky bc we’ve hardly had any snow this winter and had to cancel 3 local trips already. 12 years ago, I started running again. That same winter, I also skied for the first time in 20 years (skied 3 times in my early 20s, greens only).
Trying to run in arch supported sneakers designed for me KILLED my feet. I wanted to amputate them and I hated all these high tech custom insoles. Felt like rocks under my arch. Then I went to a flat insole running shoe like I wore when I was a kid and unbelievably all my problems went away.
When I met my wife 20 years ago, I got heat molded hockey skates. Super expensive but KILLED my feet. I would limp off the ice and sit in the locker unable to walk after a game.
Maybe not so oddly, and maybe you’ll see a pattern here: the same thing happened with my ski boots. All that custom orthotics crap killed my arches (I have relatively high arches from what I learned at one of those high end running shoe stores). For years I had my ski boots cranked too tight, flattening my arches, and I suffered. Same inability to walk when removing my boots.
Then….I saw a post from Tom Gellie who has a phenomenal ski app, BPS (expensive but has the best, nerdiest ski stuff from physics to biomechanics to equipment) Based on one of his boot equipment videos, I completely removed my liner of my foot bed: No squishy insole, nada. My feet felt amazing. I can articulate them in the boot and ski much better.
I know this seems completely contra to what you’ve probably been told but, for me *less* was so much more. Going to Beaver Creek in 2 weeks and can’t wait to ski some moguls. It is the best sport and love that you love it and record for everyone.
Thank you so much for sharing! I relate so much. I was also offered insoles at the running shop but turns out I just needed the right shoe and there was absolutely no need for any extra support or adjustments.
I just went to an EAST COAST mountain and had a contusion from blood circulation in my calf.. I ended going 3 ish runs and had to quit after that.. I feel your pain.. I'm in search of ski boots at the moment haha
At this point in time with skis and boots you might’ve been better off to just get a regular boot and get a custom sole. Then boot feels comfy snug and if there are any minor adjustments you need most boots now come with a moldable liner (k2) and rosi make banger boots
I've heard that surefoot is a bad place to get ski equipment from, personally I have a wide ass foot, and I use a 97 last 130 flex racing boot from lange and they fit me almost perfectly, instead of using foam, you could punch the boot out to make it wider in general, also the first day or so the boots won't feel the best since its not 100% molded to you feet
They’ve probably punched it ten times throughout the season 🙃 still never worked for me.
Pain in the arches is very normal if you are going for customs footbeds for the first time. It goes away pretty soon. If you went for wider boots against the bootfitters advice they will be too wide soon and then there will be nothing you could do about it.
A ski boot is not intended to be comfortable right out of the box.
I come across an unboxing video on this ski boots called Apex Antero that separates insole from the shell, maybe it’s worth trying it out! Let us know!
I'm not sure anyone would be great at carving on 99w skis though? Did I hear that waist width correctly from one of your other vids?
Yep, 99. I clearly still have a lot to learn about skis :D
@@angelinaoutside i mean, anything is possible w practice, but keep an eye out for demo days at your local. Try out some skis under 80mm and see if it's easier to get them up on edge.
@@angelinaoutside unfortunately many skiers purchase fat skis because they're popular and it is detrimental to them progressing.
@@galatians22122 interesting. I skied on 88s for 2 season, but got these because they are more suitable for all mountain skiing in Colorado. They’ve been really great in the current storm. Once I can save up again, I’ll probably get a pair of stiffer narrow skis.
@@angelinaoutside good thinking I currently ski atomic Redster X9 WB and they are a blast! Super carving skis I would suggest in the future with some narrower skis take some carving lessons it will revolutionize your skiing experience. This would also make for some very good content as you progress in your abilities. People are always drawn to others improvements.
When u first get a well fitted boots, you don’t even have to buckle the boots. Try skiing w the upper buckles done but not the bottom ones. Mine are snug so I barely close the bottom ones at the top of the feet (they’re in closed position but not tightened at all). And some people don’t even close any of the buckles since boots are so well fitted. Also, some boots allow u to move the buckles seat (?) so buckles don’t close so tightly w the custom liners
Wider skis won’t be as quick as narrower skis so you have to be more patient w things (which u can’t if you’re lacking in technique and/or experience). Flex seems be too much for you since it seems you’re not able to bend them to control the skis. FYI, flex of boots are not same across brands so Nordica flex 95 is not same as Lange flex 95
I tried without buckling too. I think maybe my feet swell while skiing because it always feels comfortable in the shop. I'll definitely make an update once all this is resolved, but for now I've been skiing in my old boots just to have fun again lol
Check out Dahu or Apex. Comfy like snow boards. Very skiable. Professional ski booter are about pain. It is NOT needed. .
buckling the foot buckles too tight will kill your feet, did you leave those just tight enough to stay closed
I tried various tightness including completely unbuckled, and nothing was really very comfortable
No recreational skier should be in that much discomfort...especially at the price you paid. Low volume foot in a Dalbello shell with an Intuition wraparound and custom orthotic. After a couple of minor adjustments (pushed out the toe area and cut out some material for a protruding ankle bone) I was good to go skiing in comfort. I have always been in between sizes so have had my share of issues.
What brand of boots is your new pair? From Surefoot?
what about zipfit liners?
You went from broke in rentals to brand new boots. You shouldn't go straight to the hill on brand new boots, you should be wearing them for a week around the house/neighbourhood in them before skiing with them. You have to simulate enough use to break them in without the stress of being on a mountain attached to skis.
So they only mold the inner boot to your foot. The soft part right?
Custom liner and insoles
Give them time to break in, even though you had them custom molded, it could still take a little time.
Thank you! I've gone back to them a few times with some adjustments, and this last time I got some very helpful tips. Going to stick with them a little longer this time before trying something new.
I am in Ohio, we haven’t started yet for the year. I got a new pair also (got them shell molded) and after seeing your video, I am going to wear them on my skiers edge tonight. Hopefully it goes well, lol
Sock choice is really a thing. I swear it matters. Check it out.
I think you should go back to your old boots for a while and have fun again. You do this for fun (I’m assuming) and that doesn’t sound fun. All in the name of vague “control”. Sounds like you were doing fine before.
Yeah I've been skiing in my old boots for a bit. They are not ideal though because they are one size too big and I definitely feel it
Keep it fun, absolutely no point otherwise. You might want put a few dollars into a pair off new goggles though…..
Going through a similar situation with my new Atomic Hawx primes. The left foot is fine but the right crushes my arch. I hope you find a solution. Also, please replace the lens in your goggles, that can really be dangerous if you were to crack that entirely.
