    Thanks for the in-depth look into an entire product line. I am a few inches taller than Weston but am a huge fan of the 55 last. It is much more stable for what I do as a tradesman and motorcyclist, really locking in that heel and having the thicker arch leather on ladders, pegs, and all sorts of terrain. I agree that the steel toes always get a little colder faster than other toe boxes, but when I tried on both types of safety toes at Nick's I felt the steel toe allowed me more room in the toe box vs composite, and drags less on the ground when I'm working on my knees than my Thoroughgoods as it is a little slimmer design. I don't see myself going for a Chelsea boot as I like the stability of lacing systems, but it is interesting to see Nick's expanding their lineup and creating this level of Chelsea for those who love them.

    Not sure exactly what you’d classify as “hard work” but I wore redbacks in the auto industry and loved them. I was walking on concrete all day, stepping in chemicals all the time and wore them with an average of 5 years each (went through 2 until the foam became exposed on the sole). Might give these a try next pretty much just off the possibility to re sole because it’s the one feature I wish I had on my redbacks.

    • @ogdoubleogtripleog
      @ogdoubleogtripleog Рік тому +1

      @@johnversluis3084 I think that’s the point he’s making about these. They should theoretically last you your whole life being able to be re soled, however, the point I was making is that I do not doubt that as I have had a boot that ran me under $200 off a tool truck last as long as they did and would have had even more life if it could be re soled. Which I’m willing to bet yours did too if you only had them for 2 years. What did you switch to/what are you currently wearing?

    • @a5tr0cr3ep

      The comfort of the Redbacks cannot be denied, but in less than a year as a DIY Dave the sole seperated at the toe and I sent an email showing how it just separated and the response was from Redback was basically like, "yeah, that'll happen" no %off, no sorry, no sticker... just "yup, that's the nature of the sole. what do you want us to do, it's only our product"

      @AndyGKaufman he's explained many times how his sponsorships can't affect his bias when he's legitimately cutting them in half and dissecting layers, he also doesn't earn a portion of sales from the video like almost all youtubers, instead he gets a lower flat rate and uses the normal kickback to get a discount for viewers. He makes extremely helpful videos, has spent a lot of time and money making those videos, and deserves to be compensated in my opinion. He has been sponsored by Nicks MANY times before by the way.

    I appreciated a deeper dive on the Nicks options, especially the discussion of the lasts. I have flat feet, high insteps, and wide toes. This video let me know that if I did decide to pull the trigger on a pair of Nicks, I definitely don't want the 55, or any structure in the toes. The HNW and soft toe seem like my best options for these boots.

    18:00 For whatever it's worth, my Florsheim Chelsea safety-toe boots have leather covering the elastic. They've been making them that way for 15 years that I know of.
    They *are* cemented construction (and who knows what's actually inside of them), but I wore my first pair everyday all day, even on vacation, for a few years. They finally started coming apart when I was running into the ocean scooping up water to put out a beach fire. I've had my second pair for more than ten years now, but these days I only wear them when I have to go to the shop for work (a couple hours every week or so).
    Sorry, didn't mean to go off on a ramble there; it's past my bed time.

    I doubt they replace the goring but I think that is a fantastic idea. One of the cool things about the majority of Nicks boots is that they're not only resoleable but also rebuildable. They will essentially build you a brand new pair of boots on your old uppers. The chelsea boots are only resoleable so being able to replace the goring as well would be amazing!

    The most nerve wracking part of ordering boots like these is sizing. I have a pair of JK Arctic boots and Nicks Hotshots and I spent hours trying to research sizing from any source I could. If you could add how your size in a boot like this (last dependant) compared to your sneaker size relates, it would be very helpful.
    These NW brands offer a try on process, but it adds a significant cost. An "order this if you are this" in whatever brand isn't necessary, but how your sizing works for you would offer helpful context

    • @wineguapo
      @wineguapo Рік тому +7

      Agreed. Sizing is one of the most important things to me. It’s $100 for Nicks’ sizing process but I suggest people use their ready-to-ship (RTS) offerings. The RTS page is updated every day with new boots. Use Nicks sizing recommendations as a starting point and go from there. RTS boots ship free, just try ‘em on and pay the return shipping through USPS. I was able to try 2 different boots and spent $60 total. I could of ordered another pair and still be under Nicks Try On process price. Hopefully this helps someone

      @wineguapo Рік тому

      @@ColinZwirner brannock is ideal. If you can’t, take your current boot size and go half size down. Each case is different depending how you want them to fit

    • @tomtheplummer7322
      @tomtheplummer7322 Рік тому +1

      Brannock is great if the manufacturers use lasts and methods to be true to that size standard. Even then it’s a crap shoot to find proper fit. I have odd feet that measure as the same size R/L on the Brannock, yet my left foot is flat and my right normal, not high arch. I’ve been this way all my life, no injuries etc. Fitting shoes my right needs at least half-size larger than my left, so I’ve compromised fit on footwear most of my life. If I can find budget athletic shoes on sale, I will buy two pair two get a good fit for each foot. Sorry, but then I just donate my mismatched pair to the thrift store🤷‍♂️. Hopefully someone else finds its the perfect fit for them or they can tolerate the fit for cheap. 😉👌🏻

      i had a chance to do in-store try-on at nick's and i'm glad i did before ordering because it was the first time in my life i ever had to get a wide shoe. i'm consistently a women's US 9/UK 7/EU 40 but had to get a 7EE at nick's. turns out the top of my foot was too high to fit into their shoes; the solution given to me was to go with a wider width. that's not something i've ever seen addressed on any online fit guides, not even nick's.

    Great overview. As I get older, my idea of a dream boot would be something like a Nick’s take on a Georgia boot Wellington-a bit shorter, no goring, pull tab on back, a better outsole (vibram blocky), no safety toe, easy break in. My life is past “hard labor”, but I still work outside-mow, move sprinklers, work on my compost pile, garden etc…the reality is that my cheap overseas Georgia Wellies will last a lifetime at this pace, but I wouldn’t mind paying a premium for a made in USA option that slightly outperforms what I have today…given that they don’t have to survive what Nicks are normally built for, maybe the cost could be reduced slightly? call it the Ultimate Yard Boot!

    I ordered my Builder Pros with the try-boot process. For a work boot used for work they fit fine. However, while the upper offers great support they are too loose in width for trail walking and hiking, particularly on slopes with side slopes. With that in mind, when I ordered my Nick's Ridgelines I changed to a "C" width instead of the "D" width with the other measurements being the same. That was a huge improvement. In regards to how to pick the right size, I'd suggest the try-boot method for your first pair. After breaking in and wearing the boots for a while you will know what isn't quite right and can make adjustments to your sizing for the next pair... I imagine that by the third pair everyone would be dialed in well!

If I was performing any activity that needed that heavy duty of a sole, I would opt for a lace-up boot, instead. As for the wedge soles, I'm just not a fan of the looks. The white foam rubber looks cheap to me. I'm sure they are all great, though.

When you compare the cost of Nick's chelsea boot to 3 pairs of Blundstones you might also add the cost of rebuilding or resoling the Nick's for a fair price comparison. I recently got my first pair of Blundstones. I like them because they are light in weight, easy on and off and comfortable. I got the model 1440 and I would not consider them a serious work boot.

      My understanding of the 11067 last is that it was a 55 but with a sprung toe that forces toes upward. My personal guess is this allows the wearer to alter their gait, but I also read a few discussions that suggested it could cause issues with muscle tightness and sprains. I’ll have to look into it again, though.

    I love the look of the 55last boots the chelsea with the logger type sole and the chunky heel looks great . I have the Wolverine 1000 mile axel boots in Grey rough out. And the Axel model is one that has the logger sole on it, instead of the leather sole. Anyway, just saying that I like the brown color and black lug sole. With all the leather that is on the heel, it looks great!!

    Rose Anvil 2 should be able to just post whatever you want to make. As for the question of the video, I’d get the chromexcel on the v-bar sole. They look great.

    Very cool and informative video. I do like this concept.
    As a European, the 55 last is a no go, but I do have a pair of HNW Nicks - which are still quite "cluncky".

    Love your videos. I would love to see a video on White’s cheaper work boots like the hillyards.

    Thanks so much for the great watch! I'm new to the channel, but greatly appreciate the comprehensive review and unfiltered opinions from a knowledgeable source. I'm in the market for some chelsea boots, but not sure I want to go straight into something that is a totally new design, even if the company has history and clout. I'm still very drawn to those heritage chelseas. Other brands I'm considering for the chelsea are (in descending price) RM Williams, Grant Stone, and Canada West. I'm curious how you think the RM Williams stack up against the Nick's. Thanks so much!

    You know what’s unique about these? The vamp panel being a separate piece. They make it a true stitchdown this way. Then they nail the heel down like they do on their other boots. That’s rare especially on a wedge. Even if you find a stitchdown you’ll see it’s a welted 360 on the rest. Did you mention this? I skipped a few parts. Look at a Viberg wedge for example. Even Truman, they’ll have a welt 270 and stitching continues to a 360. I haven’t seen this before and I instantly noticed all the panels. If you count the backstay and counter it’s a 5 piece? Typically Chelsea’s are a 2 piece and in some cases a Wholecut. I don’t even wear Chelseas but hey man they’re boots.. and that’s what I do homie 😏

    I still want the Thursday cowboy boot video with with other two boots lol. The current format over overflow is working well I think.

    I would like the wedge if it were the black-which might even be an option, I haven’t looked.
    The V-bar makes most sense for my usage.
    Love the format and the content-please do more.
    ND3 with cap toe, just ‘cause I like that look…

    Just wanted to chime in on the leather over goring here. I’ve seen this done far before Nicks and I’ve been keeping an eye out recently at my job (I work at a red wing store) and have seen a few examples since. Although the most recent ones have been non branded leather shoes from other counties (Mexico, Brazil, Portugal) I can email some photos I’ve taken if you’re interested
