Omg born in 73 and remember singing this at the top of my lungs in the back of the station wagon … had no clue! Such a different time.. the best.. there’s something to be said about being subtle that’s so comforting😊
Born in '71, and I couldn't agree more! And I remember a lot of joyful sing-alongs to songs with lyrics I didn't always 'get' at that young age; I only knew the music made me happy.
This came out in 76, the summer before my senior year. I was dating my first girlfriend. Every Saturday we jump in my 69 Chevelle SS and head for the drive-in, with this song on the radio. At 62 I remember these days like it was yesterday.
Frost green? I know a lot of cars were painted like that originally but, I just prefer the classics to be done up in black. Looks more 'aggressive' like. Although I have a friend who has a chevelle... I forget what year exactly, but it's what I call a transmission fluid orange. Forget what the color is called, I think it's a dodge color. But it does look sort of cool like that.
June 76. Visiting a girl in Provo. One afternoon, we are all in a car driving the canyons and "Afternoon Delight" comes on the radio. She harmonizes with Starland and I am smitten. So years later, after college, our marriage, a daughter and a divorce, any time I hear this song, I am back in that car in love with her. We didn't try hard enough Sherine.
The lyrics are maybe a bit corny but the arrangement and performances of this tune are top-notch. Country-pop at its finest. Then again I'm happy I didn't grow up when it was a radio staple - my parents and most people I've met in their age bracket absolutely detest this from the radio saturation it received when it came out. I like to play it sometimes unexpectedly at family gatherings to troll my folks a bit lmao
I was 8 years old when this came out. I would walk around singing it , until my mother said " stop singing that song, you don't even know what it means!" lol
I just remember in 76 i was ten, me and my sibling all 4 of us stuck in a Lincoln Continental 13 hours Drive from Detroit to Tennessee on hot july summer and listing to Afternoon Delight. Now days kids have it made with Van's, smart phone, laptop. You know what!? I wouldn't trade it!
I've loved this song since I was a boy, before I was old enough for preschool, when I had the wonderful privilege of accompanying my beautiful soul of a mother on her errands. Pure 70s gold! Those were the idyllic, halcyon days for me, spending time with the most important person in my life, whom I had all to myself as my siblings were in school and our father was at work. My mother sadly passed in 2004 from lung cancer, but listening to these super sounds of the 70s always brings me back to those perfect days spent with her. The best parts of me come from her. 😊
I was 11 in 1976. Innocent, had no idea what this song was about. But loved this song. I am a grandma now...STILL love this song. ❤ 🎵🎶 Wonderful harmony!
in Britain at the time there was a very famous creamy dessert called Angel Delight which people often had on summer afternoons and the song was released in late Summer 1976 in Britain (and that might explain why the song wasn't banned on the radio etc in Britain - and I think part of the origin of the song actually is eating in the afternoon too - which may have added to that association which got it past the censor).
Of course it's made for the young and lively people of USA in the 70's... It wasn't "raunchy" back then. You're older now, but lost the zest of Life. You don't even need words to make love to someone.. Get lost.
@@rociopalacios1621 Wow, what a cheerful soul! I bet you're a blast at parties. I guess all that cheerfulness is what makes you like your own comments? hahahaha
UA-cam is our modern-day version of a Time Machine, it helps us all go back into time and relive the memories we all miss so much, had my fair share of afternoon delights. I just love this song. Thank you UA-cam.
I don't care what anyone says about this being the cleanest dirty song; I love it!! It's a classic 1970's period song, and it's well-written and sung. I couldn't imagine anyone not including it on a list of the greatest songs of the 1970's .
It's not innuendo. "Rubbing sticks and stones together makes a spark ignite/and the thought of rubbing you has got me so excited" Pretty direct! But I love how it paints a picture of relaxed, consensual mutual celebration rather than the predatory/combative nature of so many securely lyrics
I was 8 years old on the 4th of July in 1976 the bicentennial at a jam packed Fort Lauderdale beach this song played over and over again and I hated it! my whole family was there except for my oldest brother who had came back from Vietnam very wounded in 1970. I was to young to remember that but after recovering he was never around much got married for a little while, crashed a bunch of cars, drinking A LOT and I'm sure many other things but that day he made an "appearance" he came walking down the beach holding a plastic toy boat for me and I remember jumping into his arms! to me he was like a god at that moment! and I was so proud to be his little brother his whole life was very troubled until he left us in 2010 but to me he will always be that handsome war hero who came to the beach on an over crowded 4th of July to bring his little bro a toy boat to play with in the surf. needless to say I now cherish this song with every fiber of my being RIP Joe...
It’s amazing how something as insignificant as a song Can stir up such a great childhood memory, God bless all those soldiers who gave not only their physical life, but also their emotional well-being
I saw them open for John Denver at McNicols Arena (Big Mac) in Denver Summer of '76. I sat next to a woman who worked with Erma Deutschendorf (John's mom) and she was the most delightful lady. I remember the stage turned around in a circle, so everyone in the arena eventually got a chance to see John head on. It was a fantastic concert!
John's drummer was the Wrecking Crew's Hal Blaine. John was our jet pilot every night after the show on his own Lear. Margot loved carrot juice and I had it fresh squeezed for her every day!
Oh sheeeet !! After 51 years of living I sat down this morning and listened to the lyrics of this song . Only realizing now it was talking about having a good screw in the afternoon ! I just listened to the main chorus and thinking it was about enjoying a nice sunny afternoon. I loved this song as a kid in the 70s and it sounded so innocent and wholesome 😂😂😂😂💦💦💦💦💦 !!!
My friend and I listened to this song in the 70s while looking for ladies in our late teens. My friend just passed away and now when I hear this song it brings a smile to my face and a tear in my eyes. We had so much fun back then. Your brain won't allow you to forget some moments.
@@PaulTaylor1 Exactly!! Every lyric page I’ve seen says “the thought of loving you” but it is CLEARLY “the thought of rubbing you”... glad I’m not the only one who noticed!
Wonderful song and wonderful memories from the long hot summer of 1976 in England. When life seemed more simple and the year I met my wife, Sandra. Now I'm a Grandad of two. Where did those years go? Peace and love to all.
You echoed my thoughts on this song JNW PFL. Whenever i hear this song it's like being transported back in time..We were the lucky ones to live in such great times for music.
Heck yea! Graduation from Junior high, the Summer Olympics about to begin, and we were getting a brand new President and new administration along with him! And we traveled across the country that Summer too, from Honolulu to Washington DC. Best of times for me. First time that I really heard this song and, I mean really heard it, along with Starbucks' "Moonlight Feels Right" was on our last field trip about two weeks before Summer vacation.
We were baking, the radio was on, and my grandmother said that she just loved this song. I sure wasn't ready to hear THAT at 16. "Grannny, uh... what do you think of the lyrics?" "Oh! The....uh, I just like the sound of the music, hon. I don't listen to lyrics!" Now, spinning down memory lane in my fifties, I think that Granny might've been lyin' to me.
I was a little kid when this song came out and at that time my mom made a dessert she called "afternoon delight". I thought wow, these guys really like "afternoon delight", too! And then...one day.... 🙃
@In Perspective, I know just what you mean! You're probably around my age. I thought that songs by The Village People were really catchy. Then I realized they were all songs about men! They obliged the Rolling Stones to sing a reworded version of "Let's Spend The Night Together" for their appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show and before that, banned The Doors from the same for not doing the same thing with "Light My Fire"! But other than that, a lot got cleverly slipped past the prudes in those days. Paul Lynde always had one foot out of the closet. Back then, it could have cost him everything if he'd been outed. I just thought he was an exceptionally funny guy and all I knew was that he made me crack up on Bewitched and The Hollywood Squares. You just don't have any concept of sexual orientation when you're 8 and you couldn't understand why you were scared of "catching cooties" from girls one year and the next, you were wondering why those same girls were suddenly making you feel funny in a weird-but-kinda-nice way. The Seventies were a strange but wonderful time to be alive!!
Saw them open for John Denver in 1976 at the Cow Palace in S.F. I was 13 and it was my first concert ever. Was a birthday present from my Aunts & Uncles and will always be a happy memory!
I was 4 years old when this came out in 1976. I remember the bicentennial fourth of July was the best ever. Simple times, it was the best. Playing outside all day from the morning until the street lights came on. Too bad we can't go back for a just a little bit.
@Bear-of1on Absolutely! Real artists who were real musicians that cared about the music, not fame or fashion. Plus, they said things that were meaningful instead of delving into vulgarity with their lyrics and subject matter. Yep, simpler times and simple tastes. Where has the world gone?
@@Bear-of1onYa, I was born in 69, my sister born in 67 and we loved this song. She has since passed on but I think of our younger years and singing this song.❤
I remember in the 70s when this came out I was about 11 years old. My mom loved this song (so did I, but I didn't know what the hell it was about),she would sing in tune to it. She died 4 years ago on this past April 4th of altzeimers. I really miss her.
I remember this song playing on the radio. I was only a young lad of eleven back then. My mother used to put the radio on in the mornings and that's where I first heard it. The song brings back happy memories in a world a lot happier back then...🤔
It’s just amazing that a song so erotic can be sung n presented in such a joyful and innocent way. I loved it so much that I listened n sang along with it without knowing what it meant in 1976. Just pure joy with singing it
If this was re-released just as it is it'd go number 1 world wide. Seriously. It'd be like a fresh new world just opened up. People would flock to it because it presents something beautiful which they know deep down inside that they've lost.
I agree with what you said, and it is a nice thought, except people would remember it from before and people would talk about how it's a reissue. Don't you mean if it had never been issued in the first place and was released for the first time now? Actually I think if the lyrics were changed to remove the fishing and bait references, so as to appeal more to vegetarians and vegans, and remove the rubbing references, to appeal to those who like their children to hear about romance but not whoopee, that would help it go to #1 worldwide if it could be an initial release. As it is almost 2023, with accompanying mentalities.
@@bobdavis4848 No I actually mean if it was re-released as it was. The Elvis hit "One night" from 1958 was re-released as it was originally, in England about 7 years ago and it went to number 1 on their main pop charts. You have to remember most young people today have never heard "Afternoon delight", so it would be new to them,
@@lawrence1318 I knew what you meant; I was just writing what my own opinion was. I've lived in America all my life, where I've noticed changes in society and the industry since the 1970s my favorite decade, as well as differences from the UK and Australia. I hope you are / would be right! I think reissues reaching #1 in the US are more rare than the UK. I bought all the Starland Vocal Band albums but young people I knew growing up only mentioned 'Afternoon Delight" to insult it. A college radio station I quit did a show of hundred allegedly worst songs of the 70s and put "Afternoon Delight" at #1. My first commercial radio job's program directors wouldn't play what a PD misnamed "Starlight Vocal Band," as if it was out of the question even though they usually focused on how high something charted, especially if it was a #1 like this. Many people are much too concerned with what they think is cool to their peers. When I was a teen, no one I knew encouraged me to listen to this type of music or disco, among my favorite types, they just pushed rock on me. I'd like to think youth these days are more mature though.
@@bobdavis4848 Yes I agree. The problem is often that those in the industry (A & R people and disc jockeys) are often not musical and lack a certain ability to be inspired. I once called our major 'oldies' radio station (which has a huge middle-of-the-road audience) and spoke to the manager and asked him to play Elvis' version of "The last farewell" instead of Roger Whittaker's version. But despite the fact that that station played Elvis all the time (his main hits) and despite the fact that Elvis is the most famous of all singers in history and has sold over 1 billion records, and despite the fact that his recording of that song is better sound-wise, musically and is more modern, the manager actually told me on the phone that it was too much of a risk to play it. I'm serious. I almost had a heart attack even trying to comprehend such hyper risk-averse rigidity. What they don't seem to realise is that the reason a new trend in music takes off, is that it's not the same as is currently being played. That's why Elvis and the Beatles and ABBA and others were so famous. So these ultra-conservative music industry professionals just don't get it and never will. I am quite sure that if "Afternoon Delight" were played repeatedly on the main pop stations, it'd sell millions, simply because a good song is a good song is a good song.
@@lawrence1318 Sadly, I am not surprised. The obsession in commercial radio with playing only proven material, and only the biggest hit versions of a popular song, is major. So is the idea that “People don’t know what they like, they like what they know.” The PDs who study how well songs test and industry mag statistics, may realize what you said about new trends taking off because they are different, but they have to satisfy the station owner. The station owner commonly cares more about going with what is proven and familiar, and may figure “I don’t know how to predict what new different thing might light up the request phones and take off, so I’m not going to try.” The Beatles and Abba didn’t have instant success with their first recordings; “Ring Ring” did not win Eurovision but then “Waterloo” did. Deliberate or accidental playing of a B side such as Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive,” that turns it into an a side because of the surprise enthusiasm of listeners, does indeed happen occasionally but has too rarely been given the chance to happen. I didn’t know Elvis Presley recorded “The Last Farewell”…I just played it. I have the Roger version on LP, cassette and CD. Well I put “Afternoon Delight” onto one of mix CDs I played in a music store where I worked. Sometimes a great song can be a huge hit in a different country from origin of singer just because of the nature of the music buying public in that country, for example the Clair Marlo song “Til They Take My Heart Away” which was a big hit in the Philippines but nowhere else…I risked getting reprimanded, and sometimes did, for playing some songs like that and “Afternoon Delight” on early 1990s commercial radio, aiming for a time I thought the PD and next DJ would be least likely to hear it.
Spent some wonderful afternoons on a floatie in the middle of Lake of the Ozarks listening to this song. If I could only turn back the clock to the 70s and 80s because 2021 SUCKS!
I'd rather be there with a bottle of boone's farm strawberry hill wine, knowing that I'm there, and this year is so far away. I'd be gone before 2020 too so... I'd enjoy the hell out of being there/then
@@Ichijoe2112 it 100٪ was stolen in 2020. The evidence is overwhelming, and we all knew it was going to happen too. I called it months in advance even, and it was even worse than I predicted. Hopefully going forward though. The pendulum swings and the real corruption is exposed. There's probably no perfect point in time to return to, that would last anyway. And unless things turn around soon, this is probably going to be one of the worst points in history yet that we're going into. Technology and everything. People have every right to be concerned.
I just had got married when this song was popular back in '76. The best part is: my Wife and I are still together and still enjoy some "Afternoon Delight".......
The memory this song brings me, I was 10 yrs old it's during summer vacation. I remember sitting outside on the wood rail of the porch & leaning against the wall, it was a hot day, I remember feeling lazy. The shade of the flowering tree and the sound of the buzzing bees kept me in a comfortable drowsy state. I turned on my radio and this song started playing, it fit the perfect moment. Now I'm 2024 this song takes me back to that young age and the wonderful feeling of a warm summer, smell of blooming flowers & sound of buzzing bees. Good old times, wonderful memories thanks to this song.

Ah, once again its the summer of 76. Bicentennial, bad clothes, etc. I was 9 years old, loved this song (still do), even though at the time I didn't know what they were really singing about. ;-)
True, the kids in their 20s back then had it the best, their parents beat Hitler and then spoiled the hell out of this generation just for their best representation to be Biden and Trump. Most spoiled and useless generation, the generation that created the hippies.
Loved this song and always will! I remember the seventies, i was 6 when this song came out! Paying on the radio one time with my oldest sister Bev in her 1974 Grand Prix. She had a small accident with it and met her friend, connie! Boy did I have a crush on Connie!! I figured out after a several hearings what they meant and I didn't mind being introduced to adult themes! The seventies were a much different and I think a happier time, less distractions with electronics and more conversations with people face to face. Its one of my all time favorite 70's songs! Good times and great memories!
So funny how a whole generation of us grew up thinking this was about people watching fireworks. Until I grew up and realized decades later "who watches fireworks in the middle of the afternoon?". Oh wait. Um...yeah okay. Got it. 😂. What I love is that we were all so innocent as kids back then singing this song like crazy. It really does have some great harmonies!
Hysterical! Yes, exactly. Thought it was about fireworks or something. The innocence of childhood is adorable. The "something" of adulthood is a delight, too, lol.
This is one of my favorite songs and Starland Vocal Band STILL remains one of my favorite groups. I even used to watch their variety show on TV. This song was really big when I was in the NAVY in a little town called Solomons, Maryland. I hear it even now and I am right back there in my roommate's and my house on the base. That roommate and her husband are my best friends even now!! SVB was really a good group and I love their follow up album as well!!
It was such a devastating disappointment when Starland Vocal Band parted ways. I remember I was around 17years old when I first heard this song afternoon delight instantly fell in love with the song and went out and made my purchase oh my GOD they sang so beautifully together.
I was 12 years old and in England it was one of the hottest summers we ever had.....my home town of London was buzzing with life and the sound of this song seemed to be everywhere.....memories.......
I was 11 that summer also in the London area - that summer was unique we've had very hot weather since but it's only lasted a few days in 1976 it was in the 90s for literally weeks on end , there was no rain, the roads were melted and every bit of grass was burnt brown it was like being in another country. And this was song was everywhere always on Capital Radio I actually remember hearing it in the car on the way to my cousin's wedding that July. Amazing time to be 11 and spend the whole of the summer roaming around on my bike where I lived.
I did a bike trip from London north to Stratford and down to Southampton then across to Dieppe June/August '76 - we got extremely lucky with the weather, it was a drought and hot every day, perfect biking weather. An amazing summer, glad to see others remember it, too.

I remember watching them perform this live on the Merv Griffin talk show. Merv was just sitting there with a big smile on his face during the performance.
Just a beautifully arranged song. The harmonizing is so well done. It also wasn’t like anything coming out in those days when you had Eagles, Earth Wind and Fire, Frampton , Elton John, etc. Nominated for 4 Grammys including Record of Year, and Best Performance by A Duo or Group. But pretty sure they lost both of those EWF. But they did win for Best New Artist. It was one of those songs that no matter what kind of music you were into, you still liked this song.
It also won Best Vocal Arrangement, beating out Cherchez la Femme (one of my all-time favorites!). This may be the most perfect unison singing and harmonizing ever. Every note and syllable is perfectly aligned and enunciated.

Nothin' wrong with a little consensual sex in the afternoon
Yeah back when they really couldn’t come out and say do me baby do me
Of course it's made for the young and lively people of USA in the 70's... It wasn't "raunchy" back then. You're older now, but lost the zest of Life. You don't even need words to make love to someone.. Get lost.

So true!
I used to sing this song with my Nana when I was a young kid, I didn't know what it was about 😮😮
I don't care what anyone says about this being the cleanest dirty song; I love it!! It's a classic 1970's period song, and it's well-written and sung. I couldn't imagine anyone not including it on a list of the greatest songs of the 1970's .
It is a fantastic song
Must have missed the innuendo here. Sounds like a nice picnic.
It's not innuendo.
"Rubbing sticks and stones together makes a spark ignite/and the thought of rubbing you has got me so excited"
Pretty direct!
But I love how it paints a picture of relaxed, consensual mutual celebration rather than the predatory/combative nature of so many securely lyrics
100 % !!! Well said!
Afternoon delight

I was their Road Manager that Spring/Summer! We (they) opened for John Denver.

I just turned 15 that Summer
I was 17 the harmonies were fabulous .1976 everything was painted red white blue I'll never forget
I don't listen to lyrics!"
Now, spinning down memory lane in my fifties, I think that Granny might've been lyin' to me.
She sure as Hell was! 😉
Granny was reminiscent of old days
Think about it: the only reason you are alive is because grandma got busy....
My HS girlfriend and I gave our virginity to each other listening to this song ...

I was a little kid when this song came out and at that time my mom made a dessert she called "afternoon delight". I thought wow, these guys really like "afternoon delight", too! And then...one day.... 🙃
""one toke"" over the line...
This made me laugh so much. I was 13 when this song came out and had no idea what it actually meant! The vocal harmonies are beautiful tho! LOL
😂

Heard this song blasting on a radio on a crowded beach in 1979. We were very simple back then.
Hank Paloci was it in the “afternoon”?
Yes, a very simple song
When I heard this song blasting, I would get as far from the radio as I could. I despised this song.
An absolutely perfect song. A masterpiece that, after nearly fifty years, has stood the test of time, and still sounds incredible.

@@Ichijoe2112 it 100٪ was stolen in 2020. The evidence is overwhelming, and we all knew it was going to happen too. I called it months in advance even, and it was even worse than I predicted.

Such sweet joy, lovely harmonies, and a little mischief mixed. Pure innocent joy. Loved it back then, love it even more now.
I remember watching them perform this live on the Merv Griffin talk show. Merv was just sitting there with a big smile on his face during the performance.
I loved this song as a child/ I had no idea what it was about until years later lol
Ditto for me
These are my go-to kinds of songs when I feel so overwhelmed with what's happening in the world. Things back then were so much simpler.
Absolutely, a great song indeed, and guaranteed to lift your mood, whatever that may entail! 😉🤣
It also won Best Vocal Arrangement, beating out Cherchez la Femme (one of my all-time favorites!). This may be the most perfect unison singing and harmonizing ever. Every note and syllable is perfectly aligned and enunciated.
My late sisters birthday is today . She would have been 69. For her, afternoon delight was a trip to the Dairy Queen!!!
69 y'say
Just watching my raven haired Linda take a deep breath was all I needed to start our own delight - morning, noon and night! Linda my love, you still take my breath away!
What a beautiful decade the 1970's , some of the greatest music ever , this song was great ! Just makes you feel happy , to bad there never be music like this ever again ! 1955
1969
*too*. I jus had too add that ;)
Where is this kind of music today so beautiful
Awesome vocal harmonies.
They weren't called a vocal band for nothing 😀
I was in my late teens when I heard Starland band perform and sing this song on the Grammy, this song was one of the nominated for best song of the year. I don't remember though if they win, but I love the song until now and I am still loving it - the blending of voices was great. Great music of the 70's...
This is the most 70s thing ever.
I think the songs message is timeless.
@@taco2k3 Wait, is this song not about sex?
I appreciate the sentiment, but then you'll hear something else from that era and say the same thing.🤩
So this was considered a disco record?
This song is so 70's my straight leg jeans just grew bell bottoms..
