      If that was the idea, the solution is certainly one of the best. Maybe its not the only reason for it, but it just fits very well into the fight system, since you can setup your team in different ways with materia, it is only fitting that you could have different weapon setups for the same reason.

You only get certain scripture manuals playing on hard difficulty, so I have continued to level up my weapons. The fully upgraded Buster Sword adds a couple extra materia slots, and is basically the most well rounded weapon in my opinion. I use it exclusively now.

      It goes beyond that. MANY rpg's have tried the "all weapons are created equal" approach and failed. This is because it makes new weapons feel like a trade-off, instead of an upgrade - which can feel very unrewarding. I usually hate it in RPG's.
      But the FF7R's novel solution was to add learnable abilities and a progression system - allowing it to be the best of both worlds:
      It has the satisfying growth of linear weapon progression, with the freedom offered by a game that has "all weapons created equal".
      Truly a success on the devs' part.

      Eh I prefer that each weapon had its own stats and the sphere being character based and not weapon specific (I.e. 1 massive sphere grid per character like FFX). Because let's say you have 20 weapons, that's 20 weapons you have to spend time using points which would take forever (no I will not do the automatic option I hate that). This may be why each characters have like 6 weapons which imo is not enough.
      Also I hope there's an option in later games where we can switch weapon skins. Because I want to always use buster sword but it doesn't have enough materia slots for me.

      I'm not completely sold on the materia personally. I've played FF VII since launch day in the US many years ago. Part of what made the materia system interesting and unique was the ability to create new materia by grinding it to max. You can do that here, which basically limits your strategic options to what the devs determine you get. Where FF VII was more about the players themselves developing strategies and materia combinations over the years through creating multiples of one type of materia that was otherwise only obtainable once. Don't get me wrong, I've loved just about every second of the remake but this is something that bothers me looking down the road to the other two titles.

    Since Hard mode takes away your ability to restore MP, some weapons start to shine more than others. You'll want to be able to deal with normal encounters without magic, and you'll want to find alternative ways to manage MP cost.
    Cloud:
    Hardedge is the obvious go-to. Biggest damage, pair with elemental materia to exploit weakness. Triple slash + First strike demolishes weak mobs in one second. No need to burn precious MP for anything.
    When going ham is not possible, Twin Stinger for big MP pool and 50% MP regen during combat so you can attack with magic instead. Also comes with reprieve which can save your skin, and nice boosts to elemental damage. Phys damage is still decent too.
    Tifa I juggled between 3 weapons.
    When Aerith is not in the party, she becomes the healer. Sonic Strikers have 20% reduction on both healing and offensive magic, and they get 50% MP combat regen AND tradeoff for more MP regen AND they give biggest speed bost so your healer gets her ATB full quickly. They offer no HP boosts, but compensate with HP up materia. Possibly my fave weapon in the game. They even come with decent physical damage on top of everything, so you can still burst with Tifa when you get a chance.
    If Aerith is available, Tifa swaps to pure dps role. Purple pain has nice balance between phys and mag, has big hp boost, and big improvements on crits. Downside is low MP pool, so you don't get that much benefit of the good mag attack stat. Metal Knuckles offer the biggest phys damage, so in my opinion they end up being the better option when Tifa is on pure dps duty. But both are good.
    Barret:
    Barret's duty is to be long range and deal with annoying flyers effectively and be the last man standing when others fall. So all his melee weapons are out. They are terrible.
    Out of the long range options, Big Bertha is the best. Biggest offense and HP Pool. Gatling Gun comes with slightly better MP pool if you want to cast more, but most of his casts at least in my playstyle are support and revival in boss battles. So the low MP pool is ok. Barret will never match the others in Mag attack or MP pool, so best to give him the spells that don't depend on Mag attack, like barriers, time magic and revival. He does good damage with Max Fury and Focused Shot, so usually you don't need him to have offensive materia.
    Aerith:
    Best healer in the game and best magic nuke. Silver staff has all the same fantastic MP boosts as Tifa's Sonic strikers, so it shines in healing and mob cleaning duty. Paired with MP absorb you can be a bit more careless in using offensive magic, since Aerith hits so hard you get back more MP than with other characters.
    For boss fights, Mythril Rod is solid to get that extra dps. Since with bosses you know if the chapter will end after and you don't have to worry so much about MP preservation. Mythril rod + high level Magic Up materias + Circlet + Arcane ward, target weakness elemental, big damage and stagger.

      @@AdamHallDeathPunch Yeah I've seen that Barret build and I've tried it. But at least I had a hard time keeping up with healin in tougher fights with just Prayer and chakra. Aerith does much more with a normal magnified cure with only one atb bar. Also, you need to micromanage Barret all the time to keep atb up, and I prefer using Cloud or Tifa to keep damage up. Especially Cloud, his counters are too valuable to let go. AI never uses them.

      @Full Metal Boots you could just save scum near Shinra boxes until you refill MP, lol.
      But yeah, I came to the same conclusion with Hardedge. Cloud's built to be the best bruiser of the group and his counter setup makes it all the more reason for him to up his damage and stagger ability as high as possible, so might as well recover HP through what he does best. Plus Hardedge does have a crit boost available in it's core upgrades so pairing it with Luck Up isn't a bad idea, but I prefer the chain bangle so I can use the elemental materia with fire or lightning. Some fights are trivialized with this setup like the MOTH unit or Bomb, and unless I need Tarot cards to debuff a mob or superboss with time, or bind materia, I usually just slap some revival earrings on him so I can spare revival for another party member without too much fuss.

      Full Metal Boots Actually, I use cloud’s mp on spells mostly on bosses. For healing, I just go with chakra and pray. His pray is really good. On hard mode. Aerith’s arcane ward can be used by anybody when they walk into it. So this will help boost Cloud’s magic casting potential.
      And just build Cloud’s magic attack and you got yourself a very good melee/mage fighter when the situation calls for it.

    • @mrredcheeks4018
      @mrredcheeks4018 4 роки тому +2

      @Full Metal Boots If you run Mithril Blade for black mage build and you exploit enemy element weaknesses, anything not a boss is either one-shotted by blade burst before you get near them, or the lowest level attack spells will cost you 0MP 90% of the time. I never once saw a need for Hardedge personally, but that was just with my playstyle. Bosses I felt I over prepared for since nuking them with level 3 spells worked to make them die before fighting back, knowing that the chapter would end so I could spend everything.

    You forgot that the Punisher Mode on the Nail Bat is VERY different from the usual mode. Changes the gameplay for that blade heavily. I found it to be too clunky to bother, especially as you lose Clouds amazing aoe potential with the normal Punisher attacks.

    • @Pmak
      @Pmak 4 роки тому +7

      The reason is because you're suppose to build up 2 ATB charges, disorder into the batting stance at the end of your combo when the enemy is pressured- bat and then use it into the charge up to get berserk and then disorder back into the normal fighting stance when the enemy is no longer pressured. The good part about the batting stance is it offers really high amount of stagger. So if they're pressured you can even do a couple of swings before going back into normal fighting stance with disorder. Very good with things you can pressure really easily.
      As for Aoe, Triple Slash is effective enough to do if needed. :)

      @@Pmak That definitly explains why Disorder is on that Blade, didnt make too much sense to me before, So thanks. I am still not sold on that blade, as opening battles by going into Punisher for the ultra wide sweeping jump attacks is incredible, mostly due to Clouds counter being so good. But I can see now why someone would ever use it.
      My favourite Cloud build has to be the Mythril Blade, because its special ability has insane scaling of the magic stat. One strike can wipe an entire encounter if you position it well. The animation is slow tho.
      I really like the weapon diversity in this game, there are a lot of different playstiles for each character. The objective best for Cloud is probably whatever does most damage with Triple Slash (that skill is a tad overtuned) but all blades are viable in some way.

    • @Pmak
      @Pmak 4 роки тому +4

      @@daku5413 As mentioned from my previous post my build for Cloud is:
      Hard Edge - 2 Luck Materia at max or near max with First Strike. As soon as you enter battle you just Triple Slash and then hit once or twice and then Triple Slash again. Most of the time most if not all the things as dead. You can also give him ATB Stagger and continue the onslaught if you manage to stagger something that's not yet dead.
      Also goes really good with either Tifa or Aerith as back up with the 2nd First Strike Matera and cast magnify magic if you know things will probably survive.

    • @Dailyblazer19
      @Dailyblazer19 4 роки тому +2

      @@Pmak magnify isn't really optimal for offense against larger mobs, especially on Hardmode. I'd rather conserve my MP and use magnify on support materia like barrier, or time. • @daku5413
      @daku5413 4 роки тому

      @@Dailyblazer19 I like Magnify offensively only on Aerith in her doublecast circle. if you position her well getting off two aoe -ra or -ga spells can end some of the nastier encounters in the game. Also her having Supspirit/MP Drain makes her MP matter less on Hard.
      But if she isnt present Time and Barrier are definitly amazing, as you said. Mass slow is very good as most bosses and their goons arent imune, and mass haste is obviously stellar. Something underrated I think is Magnify on Vita. Mass Vita can be a big clutch, and mass Regena is a nice buff to keep up at all times.

His Steelskin is not just useful for its defensive boost, its a boon when fighting close range & casting spells as it provides hyperarmor that prevents him from getting interrupted while casting, a utility that Aerith does not have. He's really reliable that way.

    On hard mode, you don’t replenish MP at benches anymore, which makes the Mythril Saber for Cloud & the Silver Staff for Aerith very useful for casting cures and spells (they both boost MP regen by 50%, which makes a big difference; you don’t want to run out of MP on a boss fight!) Feathered gloves make Tifa amazing as a team buffer, and are perfect for Prayer materia. Barret has some really good options for DPS or as a support tank, so it depends, but Big Bertha is always a good choice..!

    I see a lot of talk about hard mode builds. I would just like to share mine; it got me plat in 8 days and it's what I use for speedrunning. I'll only focus on gear that matters and why.
    Cloud:
    Weapon: twin stinger - gives Reprieve and MP Saver
    Accessory: Götterdamerung/Super Wristguards/Transmodulator - either focus on boosting LMT fill rate or damage.
    Weapon materia:
    (W/F/L/I mat)->"Elemental materia"
    Heal, Revive, prayer, monster skill.
    Bracelet:
    ATB Stagger, dodge, steadfast block (this gives LOTS of atb), atb boost.
    Believe it or not, self-destruct and bad breath are fantastic abilities - even on hard mode. Though you should save self-destruct for last hits. Cloud will gain large ATB for staggers, blocking, and combining with a team. Swap out atb boost with refocus for solo boss fights if you have Götye
    Notes: everyone on cloud for having good stats. However, dps he puts out is reduced when you consider:
    ATB charge rate
    Combo speed
    Stagger fill rate
    In comparison to other char's. Play around with tifa's "chi trap" and then tell me who the best character is.
    Tifa
    Weapon: either purple pain or mythril, for mana, reprieve, etc.
    Accessory: transmod (best for her)
    Weapon mats:
    Parry (amazing on her), steadfast block, ATB Stagger, ATB Assist, Revive, heal.
    Bracelet: pray, hp up, atb boost
    Alternatively you can increase mp and use metal knuckles, I prefer this though. Chi trap staggers quickly and burns through hp, use two at a time to fill allies atb and perpetually pour on pain.
    Barret:
    Weapon: sadly the best one is his LMG - Rprieve and some other bonuses. But bertha gives better damage. Mostly flavour here.
    Accessory: transmod ONLY if the isn't there.
    Mp up, mp up, hp up, hp up, pray, revive
    Steadfast block, skill master, refocus, whatever else you like. (THUNDAGA for me)
    Barrett earns atb passively and I try to keep his atb full if risk high, so he can rev or pray. For the rate he earns atb, he's about as good as clou, but with virtually no atk endframes and more options to reach bosses/enemies.
    Aerith:
    Weapon: Guard Stick
    Accessory: cog bangle , I think, the one that converts mana to lmt. Or götter'done for like bladefish.
    Materia:
    Magnify->barrier/heal (for summons and tpk bosses use barrier, but you want both), elemental+whatever, pray revive
    Mp up, hp up, hp up, refocus
    Give Aerith the opposite element of cloud, just in cas, or lightning / fire because of tracking. She fills atb pretty fast but is very fragile. Best limit in the game.
    Pride and joy:
    Use team ATB or Aerith Tifa Barrett. Tifa builds atb for rangers, draws agro, and expediates stagger. Makes the fight a no-brainer.
    ***note: certain builds may perform best for certain bosses (e.g. more spells for hellhouse), but this is the build i found to perform best for a no-swapout speed run. Happy plating!

    I do love that you get new weapons, they are fun to use and all that. But I just love the fact that I can use the Buster Sword. I remember playing FF7 and always thinking that any weapon I got never really looked better than the Buster Sword. So to find out that I could just use it for the entire game was such an awesome surprise to me. I truly love the way they have done weapons in the game so that you can play around with some cool new weapons and get new skills and then have the option to just swap back to the original weapons.
    Replaying the game on Hard now and I will be using all the standard weapons, except for perhaps Aerish as her weapon does not show in cinematics anyways.

    Cloud: Twin Stinger (After switching couple weapon for defeating Hell House, this sword comes in handy. And beat Sephiroth first try)
    Tifa: Sonic Strikers (Damage Dealer Slightly Healer, reduce mp cost)
    Barret: Light Machine Gun (If Aerith was out, He's the prayer and healer)
    Aerith: Silver Staff (Balance Attack and Healing)

    This was the best / simplified gear system I’ve seen in an RPG in, well, forever. Fewer choices = better gameplay.
    But - and maybe it’s because I suck - but it nearly my 20ish years of playing Final Fantasy, I’ve yet to see an argument for not making characters as strong physically and defensively as possible. Aside from the fun factor and a few annoying battles I never go too heavy into the magic route.
    I’ve found that there are usually accessories and equipment that takes care of magic defense and simply making every character able to aggressively heal and deal the most HP usually satisfies the main storyline battle requirements.
    Anyone else feel this way? Magic is fun but support Materia + healing + physical damage to opponent seems to be more efficient.
    Hard mode in this game breaks that model though and party designation starts to become more important.

    Silver staff for aerith, 50% bootctomp regen, boosts to elemental damage, magic boost when mp full, tradeoff, mp cost reduction on both types, reprieve.
    ......hard mode, it was nice to have that weapon that geared to mp cost reduction and regen of mp.
    Mytthril Saber for cloud, trade-off, 50%mp regen, and attack magic reduction. Hard mode since the AI acts more defensive and really doesn't cast, I like him more magic geared. This run, I may try the nail by with luck plus now, though.
    I love that Tifa is fast, but I'll misjudge distance and miss occasionally with an attack or worse, her limit. I felt the same way with snow in 13, something about a fist weapon. I miss more. Sonic strikers. Healing cost down, activation 50%, 50% mp regen, boosts to elemental damage, and buff and debuff. But I do really like the feather gloves, too.
    Barret is Big Bertha. Trade off, self-healing boost, little more hp, and boost to his limit. I love what they did for him in the remake. Love him ranged, but it's real he can go healer if cloud and Tifa need to be solid damage.
    When I can pick I take aerith and barret. I prefer ranged....although th AI is always like..."ima get reeeeal close to use my rage attack ok?!" Example is the big bomber fight, yikes him back and to the side build up bars, heal ppl ect as you widdle away with him since he'll run right in and he's crazy slow....
    I wouldn'ti mnd other setups; so far, for me on hard, this is what I used. Material load out is all dependent on what you're fighting and accessory. Rufus on hard props that with the right set up, it's way less painful. It was brutal until I got it right.

    I like to use barret to soak damage and heal, aerith to pressure with magic and help heal when barret struggles, then use barret and tifa when pressured to stagger then tifa brings the pain! Can’t get enough of chaining her abilities so much fun

  • @VenganceAngel19

    My final HM choices:
    Cloud: Hardedge just puts in work unless a magic boss like Hell House pops up then Mythril Saber (Hardedge still has decent magic with cloud's base stats)
    Tifa: Feathered Gloves as its very all rounder, maybe trade for Metal Knuckles here and there for physical
    Barett: LMG. With the def, heal cost reduction, and reprieve, it makes it worth. (pains me to say goodbye to big bertha's dps, but LMG utility is godsend in HM)
    Aerith: Silver Staff, aerith has pretty decent magic dmg and is range so you really shouldnt have to guard much (crossed Mythril Rod and Reenforced Staff for me) and with MP being hard to refill, SS 50% mp regen is a tempting choice

    • @Willias

      For me it's
      Cloud - Buster Sword - Just an all-around strong weapon. One of the few swords that has a passive boost to Punisher Stance. Also gives small MP regen. There's just no wasted stats here.
      Tifa - Feather Gloves - Tifa is the only character that gets boosts in speed, and these gloves give the highest speed boost, while also giving her good attack and magic stats and boosting her block (which helps considering she's melee and not as tough as Cloud).
      Aerith - Silver Rod - MP Reduction on all spells? Yes please. Means that many more -aga spell casts. Also high MP regeneration.
      Barrett - Haven't figured out quite yet. Thinking either EKG or Big Bertha. Big Bertha for HP, or EKG to boost his casting ability to give him more versatility.

    He didn't even mention Aerith's Silver Staff, which I almost exclusively use with her. 50% MP regen boost in combat is the best out of any other, elemental spell percent increases make up some of the lacking raw magic power, and comes with healing and attack spell mp reduction.

    Tifa: Leather Gloves. Not sure why, they just feel the most well-rounded and comfortable to me.
    Barret: Big Bertha because obviously. Plus, Maximum Fury is probably the most fun ability to use.

      @Dailyblazer19 4 роки тому +1

      @@jurassisart except the only two weapons that Cloud has reprieve on are some of his weaker swords. Twin Stinger is a good support healer that takes advantage of elemental weaknesses, but knowing your enemies weakness isn't always tenable, especially in the simulator where you're trying to stretch one materia across 5 matches and it only accounts for a few enemy weaknesses.
      I'd rather stick to Hardedge as it supplements clouds counter skills with boosted crit ratio and the ability to leech HP off staggered and defeated opponents. It's a more effective measure of healing your main fighter while you attenuate Tifa as the battle mage that can deal out good stagger and dps, with HP absorption tied to her materia setup and leave Barrett as the support tank with Lifesaver, and Big Bertha for trade off and desperate recovery. Have time materia slotted on Cloud or Tifa to Hasten Barret and give him ATB Guard materia and he'll gain more ATB for guarding while he has Lifesaver in effect. He can spam Prayer while keeping his distance. Just keep Cloud pressuring the mobs or superboss and have Tifa duck in and out with her strikes to help build stagger and supplement ATB rate for low grade magic that helps to pressure enemies and makes Clouds role easier.

    2 refocus materia (boost attk and stg), supernatural wrist guards, 2 luck up materia, 2 HP up, elemental + enemy weakness, parry materia, bahamut materia, for attack up.
    I try to leave cloud around 2k HP and max HP as close to 9999 as high as possible to increase damage and crit rate. I use long press punisher for frenzy. Cast Manawall/barrier by party member to decrease damage dealt to cloud and stay in punisher mode and move around with parry dodges. The slow punisher move will pressure and put enemies off balance. This WRECKS enemies and is so much fun to compare damage output to Hardedge.
