This increases Cloud's attack damage, but also damage received for a short period of time. A double-edged sword. 10. Cloud. Once you get the prayer materia level that shit up. Love that materia, treat it nice, give it lots of exercise. Once its fully leveled it basically can restore your entire teams HP without using MP. Sure, it uses 2 ATB bars. Equip it to either Barret or Aerith and bam! You're healer can come in super clutch and it will allow you to pair Barrier with Magnify instead of healing materia.

Been a veteran of the series for over 25 years, but found this really helpful! Been having “trouble” with adapting to this whole new combat system (same with FFXV) so I’ll take every tip I can get, cheers!
Combat tip for Tifa. You don't necessarily want to spend unbridled strength after building it up, it upgrades pretty much everything about her; her normal attacks, her abilities, her air combos, even her movement speed (I think). There are scenarios when unloading both levels of unbridled strength on an enemy is the best way to pressure them, but unless you know what they are it's better to just save it up until the enemy is staggered, then use it for a super combo because it builds up stagger damage. Something like True strike > True strike > Triangle > Triangle > Dive Kick or Starshower.
Thanks for this tip. I had no idea. I'm taking notes, so I can understand FF7 Remake's combat mechanics better , and I've just including your tip in my notes.
I am at chapter 17 of the game and gotta say there is never a dull moment in FF7R. Everything is paced beautifully and every character has a unique personality. Love the game. Thanks for the tips, they would be useful when I play in hard mode!
Been playing both the OG and the Remake this week, and I have to say playing them both back to back I love how in-depth they went on the Midgar section. At first I was upset that it was not the full game, but once you realize they are really spacing this game out and going all the way in on character development I know this trilogy is going to be a masterpiece if they stick the landing on the next two entries.
This is unironically one of my all time favorite tip videos. There's so many tip vids out there for all sorts of games, but rarely do they hit a certain kind of quality in terms of what sort of things the creator considers to be uncommon knowledge or worth sharing and so on. To temper the absurd praise of the first sentence, of course this isn't exactly mindblowing revolutionary information, but it just goes to show what a solidly made video from a guy really interested in helping people out and not just cheap content for clicks with pseudotips can do for someone's appreciation of you lol.
Remember that using Tifa's Unbridled strength is a pretty significant DPS increase, as it not only adds more attacks to her damage string and lets her build ATB quickly, it also gives her a small damage boost on all physical and magical attacks, which can be further enhanced by skills on certain gloves.
You can call this a side note on a side note on a side node to 1:56. Before you start healing with items, equip the Item Master Materia first to increase the effectiveness of your items with a significant degree.
I agree that learning the combat system is imperative (focus attacks: pressure-> stagger). They should’ve had some extensive combat simulation because it’s absolutely necessary to know about for hard mode. It’s also good to note that countering is good but doesn’t always leave an opening to mash the enemy- some enemies do multi-hit attacks and will annihilate Cloud if he tries to combo after a counter (hard mode will exploit cloud easily). Something that’s also good to know is that Tifa’s unbridled strength increases her basic combo as well as leading to her 3x ability combo. Having her at level 3 will allow her to build atb quickly and harass those annoying airborne enemies longer. Lastly, magic casting is great, but it’s most effective when used for staggering instead of spam-casting. It’ll be good to get in that habit if the player wants to try hard mode since items can’t be used at all (MP is scarce). Edit: Adjusting camera settings and lock-on can improve gameplay. I would suggest learning that early game so the player can get calibrated to it. I was used to having the camera auto-focus on my locked enemy and dealing with the terrible camera angles that when I adjusted it late-game, I found it too complicated.
For the reason you explained yourself, Id recommend linking the magnify materia with the barrier materia. I feel like if youre playing the game in the best way, healing characters one at a time is all you need. Of course theres times where this isnt the case, but its not as common as youd think, plus having the pray materia helps with this tremendously, especially when your healer has the healing carcanet equipped
Im still on my 1st playthrough though so thats the mindset Im in! And obviously Im still learning, I meant this as a point of conversation/question, I just didnt get that across lol
I don't like tifa but her fighting is so fun. You gotta put parry on and slide in and you can reset her combo and go insane with her attacks it's like playing Tekken sometimes lol. Really awesome.
are you looking foward to part 2 wene it comes out. i know i am/the good thing about this lockin is im half way threw the first game with 100 hours plus
I didn’t know there was a mini map in the first place. I’m on the Wall Market now and got lost all the time and had to open the map regularly. It’s the best tip for me.
With cloud, when you finish a square combo, press triangle to switch stance and start attacking right away without having cloud repositioning. Especially effective when in punisher mode, since tge animation is quite long before you can attack again. Yoy should also talk about advanced combo with tifa, like dive kick after an uppercut while still in the air and stuff like that. It makes tifa gameplay style way better
Great video here are some tips I discovered on my side that u might not know: -U can skip cutscene by holding triangle and go to menu bar before boss fight by holding square. - if u go to menu options and select gameplay switch cursor position from forget to remember for both in and out of battle it will save u lot of time especially in battle if u want to reuse an ability twice instead of always having to scroll down from the top -in menu options again if u go to camera and controls set the combo targeting from fixed to free it makes a HUGE difference in your battles as you won't have to wait for your attack combos to end to be able to switch to another enemy you will be able to target another approaching one right away even if u didnt finished comboing the first. - u can survive dying from self destruct enemy skills if u pair subversion materia to a maxed out warding materia on your armor. If you want to make thing even more broken pair your enemy skills to hp absorbs and you actually can get HEALED from self destruct instead of dying!!!
Counter stance was the MVP during the final few fights of the game. I had never used it before then but quickly fell in love with it after it proved to be incredibly useful
That minimap button was a struggle for my first 5 hours. My "wish I knew" tip: You can hold down the run button (R2 or L3) to slide down ladders or climb them faster. I know it feels obvious, but I didn't even think to try it.
You actually only have to finish the Chapter 14 quests to receive the Elemental Materia. Also the Collapsed Subway is a great way to farm for gil and get experience.
Quick tip about extending after entering berserk - if you tap triangle and then Mash square (to finish the combo) after the charge attack in Punisher, you can transition back to Operator seamlessly and get its combo ender.
Oh I wish I'd seen this before last night! That Roche fight had me in a rage! He kept wiping his ass with me until I figured out that Ascension was the move I needed all along lol, and the punisher counter attack saved my ass so many times
Holy ***" thank you for all these tips!!! Finished my first playthrough recently, and didn't realize most of this stuff, especially with the menu system and with the different level of spell and how to activate magnify, or the l1 button when using items. Going to be using these tips for the hard mode playthrough.
OMG thank you for the tip to get the Assess info on enemies that have already been Assess’d! It was driving me insane trying to remember what every mob was weak too!
Lol i got my platinum, never used barrier or magnify (i did use magnify x cure for the ultimate weapon trophy tho). First strike materia is one of my favs, starting battle with ATB bar filled makes most combat so much faster.
I def. leveled up my Barrier material as soon as I could because it is so helpful against stronger enemies. Def. helpful against Airbuster (just finished him).
One thing I’ve found out having played the game thru and finding almost all the Materia is that on second play thru on Senario Chapters that you don’t always find the exact Materia you found the first time around in the sane spots. Many the time for me if you collected it the first time thru it’s seen to been replaced with Health, Poisons or other random Materia types. So beware.
An important one imo is to try and have the revive materia on you as much as possible when you get it. There is an intel report from chadley that needs u to master all 12 Green Materia and i found myself clearing the game without having gotten the revive mastered... Use the AP up on it asap and get it maxed if u wanna try and get Bahamut before finishing the game, tho personaly i found the summons kinda useless in the Normal runthrough, will see how it is on the hard mode now.
I always wondered what that transparent square icon with "menu" on it was in the bottom left corner meant, but was always too worried about canceling out the cutscene by playing around with buttons
@@Zaxamaphone definitely gonna be handy when going through hard mode, I think. Just recently got the game, and finished the normal playthrough last night so very handy tip
I played the first 14 hours without knowing there was a minimap. I used the compass and opened up the map menu every 15 to 20 seconds to make sure I was going where I wanted to... Edit: btw thank you for the tips!
Thank god for the ability to hold L1 and not get kicked out the menu when healing. Drives me nuts how it exits the menu for every item use. Thanks for tip!
About Magnify materia, i prefer Resist materia cos its gives u timed ribbon for whole party wich is pretty useful against proper enemy's (i.e. Malboro)
I didn't know about the square button, holding it down, during a cut scene before a boss fight you can bring up your menu!!! God, how I wished I knew that before!! So many times I had the wrong materia on during those fights and had to start over again, or quit in the middle, or died because I was not prepared.
When you're looking at the full screen map if you press R2 you can see a list of all Quests by Chapter and their progress/completion. I didn't realize this until I was in Chapter 14. It's a good way to ensure you're not forgetting things.
Wish they had added effect in the remake. Loved to use lucky 7s and a range of linked status effects (transform, mystify, time, and contain) on Clouds in the original ff7.
ON chapter 14 and I learnt so much from this vid! CHeers. Been playing it on a few hours a week so haven't had time to fully immerse and learn everything so I appreciate this !
that L1 potion, R1 in the materia screen and menu before boss fight so useful to know! esp R1 materia, kept existing out of each character to swap out materia. xD
I just beat the game and was getting so mad because I couldn't figure out how to use the counter attack special haha. It would've saved me a lot of frustration during the Rufus/ VP fight
That menu tip leading into a boss fight was beyond helpful. I was always like “how the fuck am I supposed to prep for a boss fight without reloading”. Cheers mate.
I have plat the game sir good job on summarizing so many tips I had to learn MYSELF. While I learned nothing from the video since I've learned it all the hard way or accidentally... just wanted to say that you did a very good job hitting on all the important things I did through trial and error. Like I said I already plat the game a year ago so almost no point watching this video but I enjoyed how you worded it all out! Good job man...
Just started last night. Finished ch1 & fought through the streets, up the ladder & across the rooftops. I’m still feeling out the controls. Haven’t finished a FF game since IX. I did not like X at all so I stopped playing. I hesitated on VII remake but loved the original VII so much I started. IM GLAD I DID! After 122 hours of the original to final fantasy VII (chokobo breeding) just to fight ruby weapon the nostalgia just got me. Love knights of the round summon hope it’s eventually in this series. FFVII was free for ps plus subscribers. Thanks for the tips. I was definitely using the focus abilities wrong.
I've got to be honest ladies and gentlemen, I am definitely one of the people that accidentally turned off the minimap and spent about an hour running around, pissed that I had to keep pulling up the damn map lol. I have since figured it out. But that last tip would have been great if I'd of seen this prior.
Barret has a virtual First Strike ability if you know what you're doing. At the beginning of any fight with Barret, immediately use his Overcharge ability to rapidly fill up your ATB. Then you can immediately buff or use a special ability or spell to deal even more damage. If you pick the right abilities to lay the hurt on a foe, this will often put it very near death, if not outright kill it. Otherwise, it can help turn the tide of a fight early on with the right buff or debuff applied.
I don't know man... The ending was SO disappointing... I'm not an OG fan... Of course I know the highlights of the story tho. But this... Turning FFVII in timeline/dimensions/time-travel territory? With characters coming back to life? Zack's death was so meaningful, it's the main reason why Crisis Core is such a powerful game... What are they thinking? They can't think "surprise" is better than quality? Right? Right...? Because this is straight-up fanfiction level of narrative :\ And the worst part is that the rest of the game is SO GOOD. Damn...
@@marinomele4575well i like the new heading personally, although its not an actual remake anymore, but clearly Square Enix is not making the game for people that didnt play the original dozen times at least, which i understand why, its like "let me tell you a new story except this one is which not like the one you read hundreds of times in the past already" kind of ideal, those that dont like the heading i can understand as well, but since i play the game for 23 years I do appreciate both the new fan fiction like fan service/Nomura kindomheart bullshit now they are doing, and also the new player want to appreciate the original story, its a pity they seem to want to better sell than stick to the original, which is a perfect story. Oh and Zack probably didnt come back to life in the remake timeline, they kinda show it in the end just to show the other parallel universe where hes alive, probably just a way to let Aerith to say goodbye and make peace with her former love
This reminds me a lot of the combat system from xenoblade, except a lot more in depth, due to the complex battle system, which was already set up in XV, which is nice!
Omg!! That R1 to see all materia from all players 👏👍 best tip! Also quick question. I use the elemental materia on everyone.. But it didn't seem to work on anyone but Cloud. Did I do something wrong? Should I put it into the armour section instead..? Didn't notice any element effects on anyone else's weapons and they still received damage from that element.
I only played the demo and found that boss fight haaaard, and combat a little confusing, this definitely is helping me to prepare for the actual playthrough - thanks!
Magnify and Heal materia is great, but I like Magnify and Barrier + maxed out Prayer + haste + all party members can use heal anyway. I didn't know about the elemental health regen tip though, that was great.
When playing in Hard mode you no longer can use items so I started selling them off. BUT in the VR battle to get the Bahamut materia you can use items again so I was freely using mega-potions and elixirs in order to conserve MP.
The mini-map doesn't accidentally disappear once inside wall market. It just flat out disappears with no warning and I had to look up how to add it back. Not a big deal but your tip will help out a lot of ppl that are probably wondering where their mini-map went during the that part of the game.
I miss the feature in the original game where once you mastered a materia you would get a fresh copy of it. It was a good way to get multiples of some materia. 7:55 this switch to punisher parry ability does not work on Rude, i tried it and he did not get parried even once.
Gamer Guru Just any of his punches. Didn’t seem to have any effect on him. I switched to punisher when close to him and i still got beat up. Maybe it’s just me, maybe I just suck at fighting Rude 😂
When you get 2 and 3 star spells you have to click the spell then scroll right on d-pad to use them, I didn't figure that out till after the game was over...

Im still on my 1st playthrough though so thats the mindset Im in! And obviously Im still learning, I meant this as a point of conversation/question, I just didnt get that across lol
It actually makes sense, prayer materia already has healing everyone covered so yeah you’re right
I wish I had known earlier on that Tifa is way more fun to play than Cloud.
Right? Isn't it awesome to just sock some shit up?
I don't like tifa but her fighting is so fun. You gotta put parry on and slide in and you can reset her combo and go insane with her attacks it's like playing Tekken sometimes lol. Really awesome.
are you looking foward to part 2 wene it comes out. i know i am/the good thing about this lockin is im half way threw the first game with 100 hours plus
When tifa has better combos than smash bros cloud
I found out really quick I suck with her. Which is a shame since I do like her so much. :(
I didn’t know there was a mini map in the first place.
I've seen a lot of these videos but yours was the best in giving the most unique and just helpful pointers.
Great video!
Great video here are some tips I discovered on my side that u might not know:
-U can skip cutscene by holding triangle and go to menu bar before boss fight by holding square.
- if u go to menu options and select gameplay switch cursor position from forget to remember for both in and out of battle it will save u lot of time especially in battle if u want to reuse an ability twice instead of always having to scroll down from the top
-in menu options again if u go to camera and controls set the combo targeting from fixed to free it makes a HUGE difference in your battles as you won't have to wait for your attack combos to end to be able to switch to another enemy you will be able to target another approaching one right away even if u didnt finished comboing the first.
- u can survive dying from self destruct enemy skills if u pair subversion materia to a maxed out warding materia on your armor. If you want to make thing even more broken pair your enemy skills to hp absorbs and you actually can get HEALED from self destruct instead of dying!!!
Thanks for sharing!
Counter stance was the MVP during the final few fights of the game. I had never used it before then but quickly fell in love with it after it proved to be incredibly useful
I've never used it (or seen it) -- And I just finished the game a few days ago. Now I have to play through again and use this!
Decimate bosses with counter stance in hard mode
That minimap button was a struggle for my first 5 hours. My "wish I knew" tip: You can hold down the run button (R2 or L3) to slide down ladders or climb them faster. I know it feels obvious, but I didn't even think to try it.
had no idea about holding Square button before boss and would restart from last battle instead...thanks for this!
Thanks for that tip about seeing everyone's materia all at once!
You have no idea how long I played with a disabled minimap until I figured out how to turn it back on (read: by accident)
Lol I just found out now from this video
I kept turning it off by accident, lol.
THIS. And I looked online for fricken hours trying to figure it out only learn how to do it by accident!
I disabled it in the beginning to but I went crazy trying all button combinations to get it back.
Same. Stupid UX, it should be in the settings as well.
You actually only have to finish the Chapter 14 quests to receive the Elemental Materia. Also the Collapsed Subway is a great way to farm for gil and get experience.
actually load up chapter 9 and play till Colosseum and just do the battle on classic you can even go do your own stuff you need to.
Quick tip about extending after entering berserk - if you tap triangle and then Mash square (to finish the combo) after the charge attack in Punisher, you can transition back to Operator seamlessly and get its combo ender.
I use Disorder to switch between Operator and Punisher, also generates ATB
Oh I wish I'd seen this before last night! That Roche fight had me in a rage! He kept wiping his ass with me until I figured out that Ascension was the move I needed all along lol, and the punisher counter attack saved my ass so many times
Holy ***" thank you for all these tips!!!
Finished my first playthrough recently, and didn't realize most of this stuff, especially with the menu system and with the different level of spell and how to activate magnify, or the l1 button when using items.
Going to be using these tips for the hard mode playthrough.
Pretty sure this is a paid advertisement for counter stance
Dead
lol
OMG thank you for the tip to get the Assess info on enemies that have already been Assess’d! It was driving me insane trying to remember what every mob was weak too!
I just started this game last week and this is by far the best tips video for me. Great job new fan
Lol i got my platinum, never used barrier or magnify (i did use magnify x cure for the ultimate weapon trophy tho). First strike materia is one of my favs, starting battle with ATB bar filled makes most combat so much faster.
Note that Barret's reload can actually be done after ANY attack. Even Magic
i've played this game so damn much since launch when i close my eyes before sleeping i see ff7 battles =/
and battle theme always playing in background...
Fu guys I had Sephiroph wake me up at 2am
Damn I didn't know how clutch the elemental material would've come in. Could've clapped Shiva so hard.
I def. leveled up my Barrier material as soon as I could because it is so helpful against stronger enemies. Def. helpful against Airbuster (just finished him).
So beware.
This is gold! They should hire you for future game tutorials/explainer videos!!!
Holy crap did not know the menu could be accessed before boss fights
I always wondered what that transparent square icon with "menu" on it was in the bottom left corner meant, but was always too worried about canceling out the cutscene by playing around with buttons
@@RBelmont007 honestly never noticed it until this video lol
@@Zaxamaphone definitely gonna be handy when going through hard mode, I think. Just recently got the game, and finished the normal playthrough last night so very handy tip
Damn dude thanks for the map tip, I was wondering why I don’t have my mini map anymore lol
I played the first 14 hours without knowing there was a minimap. I used the compass and opened up the map menu every 15 to 20 seconds to make sure I was going where I wanted to...
Edit: btw thank you for the tips!
That mini map tip was probably the best tip of them all.
Borrowed my ps4 and FF7R to a buddy, a day later he says "what happened to my minimap?" Serisouly, great tip!
Thank god for the ability to hold L1 and not get kicked out the menu when healing. Drives me nuts how it exits the menu for every item use. Thanks for tip!
10x for the Elemental Materia tip bro. Was a bit past that chapter, missed it, reloaded a previous save and this time picked it up. Cheers! 🍻
Not all boss has this though
I actually thought the mini map was only on at certain points. 😂
When you're looking at the full screen map if you press R2 you can see a list of all Quests by Chapter and their progress/completion. I didn't realize this until I was in Chapter 14. It's a good way to ensure you're not forgetting things.
I only found out in C17, long after I finished the side quests. Lmao
I watched many content related to the game but this video won!! Thanks for the tips
Great tips.
That mini map one is easily overlooked--THANKS
I did accidentally disable the minimap! I thought it just got removed partway thru the game
that L1 potion, R1 in the materia screen and menu before boss fight so useful to know! esp R1 materia, kept existing out of each character to swap out materia.
Man this is so great I’m on chapter 7 and this really enlightened me to things I didn’t notice
The first time I noticed you could hold square before a boss battle was literally right before Sephiroth.
Richard Bastuck big +1 here
I completed the game and just knew it watching this 😂
Fail...
Very nicely put together video, straight to the point, well appreciated!
I accidentally disable the mini map and didnt know hot to enable it until i asked my friend
Or you can just google it.
I didnt even know there was one...
Personally, I found the mini-map to be a blessing in Wall Market, so many little nook and crannies that can be missed if you don't pay attention
@@damueswivel yeah i played coupole of chapters withouth mini map just spamming the big map ecery second xD
Press L2
Thank you. That potion use shortcut is a savior
Yeah secretly hidden although I rarely relied on items... Good practise to play for hard mode anyway
This is a brilliant video! I had no idea about these materia upgrades getting such effects! Thanks!
Free First Strike with Barret 👍
This is the best game I have ever played, the first game I have played all the way up to 6am
Play the original ffvii!
its is the best, I want to play the next part NOW!!!
BirdOfHermes83 D. I have played it twice but when I played it. I did in my free time.
Right? Right...?
Because this is straight-up fanfiction level of narrative :\
And the worst part is that the rest of the game is SO GOOD.
I’m barely on chapter 3 so seeing you fighting that house really sets up the game for me
I swear to god, these tips weren't mentioned else where if I'm right. Subbed it right away.
This reminds me a lot of the combat system from xenoblade, except a lot more in depth, due to the complex battle system, which was already set up in XV, which is nice!
Omg!! I never even noticed the f'n mini map... Thank you!!!!
... And you can set it to be Static (where it doesn't turn around with you) or not static (where it does turn). Very handy.
wow this was actually incredibly helpful thank you!
Thank you! There were a few stuff I didn't know. This helps a lot! 💜
@@GamerGuruOfficial so if you put it on the armor it won't make your attacks that element too, just the resistance to it?
@@coppersssnek9619 that's what the description says.... Pretty self explanatory
I only played the demo and found that boss fight haaaard, and combat a little confusing, this definitely is helping me to prepare for the actual playthrough - thanks!
Proper helpful tips- the elemental and magnify , and barret move is ace - I completed it but had me harddrive wiped so redoing it
Don't forget Parry materia that allows Cloud to stay in punisher mode with dodging and move much faster by spamming R1+O
That L1 tip is so helpful! Played through the entire game without knowing I can do that lol They've really thought of everything with this game.
I needed that last tip! 😂 I disabled it and kept opening the larger map everything I got lost…it was very frustrating.
Magnify and Heal materia is great, but I like Magnify and Barrier + maxed out Prayer + haste + all party members can use heal anyway.
I didn't know about the elemental health regen tip though, that was great.
I disabled the minimap in chapter 11 and thought it was a deliberate part of the game to add to the suspense of that chapter!
In hard mode, you can preserve MP by using Magnify+fire (for example), and MPabsorb+fire for pretty much free MP
Thanks a heep dude. The elemental materia on armor is a really good tip. Im on hard mode right and i can use all the tips i can get.
One extra tip. Tifa with parry materia is awesome. Try to master it with Tifa. Oh and level up Chakra and Prayer. Its a must on hard mode.
legend! couldn't figure out how to get mini map back haha. The R1 materia page will be helpful also! cheers
I miss the feature in the original game where once you mastered a materia you would get a fresh copy of it. It was a good way to get multiples of some materia.
7:55 this switch to punisher parry ability does not work on Rude, i tried it and he did not get parried even once.
Gamer Guru
Just any of his punches. Didn’t seem to have any effect on him. I switched to punisher when close to him and i still got beat up.
Maybe it’s just me, maybe I just suck at fighting Rude 😂
Think its just you. All the 1v1 boss battles were too easy imo... Punisher hold r1 no skills
I've already beaten the story line and I didn't k ow alot of this...very helpfully thank you
All your tips were very helpful. Including the mini map one. Lawl FF7 dont tell you what button u need to push to activate stuff
Great Video. For the greatest game ever. I cant wait until the put out the next to parts. Cause I know there going to make the Captin CID a real Boss!
That last tip got me, I have had the minimap disabled for a long time
When you get 2 and 3 star spells you have to click the spell then scroll right on d-pad to use them, I didn't figure that out till after the game was over...
Lolol
This was helpful... oh and ur last tip is funny to me because when I started playing about 3 days in I didn't have or kno about the mini map. Until a convo with my bro LMAO
Omg thank you especially for Materia like the link up I didn't get it when I red it I didn't understand stand and that they were so good this helped me lot thank youuuuuu
