- We discuss the effects of cold plunges and cold showers on mental health, dopamine, noradrenaline (norepinephrine), addictions, and brain longevity.

These two are going to have a super human baby with all this amazing information and example as parents
aww thank you.
And good looking too😊
@@kittykittysoftpaws 🥰
They'll have a good looking baby, but as long as they're not brother and sister.
I remember after leaving school, just at 16 years old, and going to work on a building site, as an apprentice. The job was near to a canal, by the Irish Sea coast, here in Liverpool, actually the area is very exposed to the wind. Well, it was so freezing, -4 easily, and I don't remember any dopamine hits, haha. But, meanwhile Tae Kwon Do was being popularised here and there were videos of the Korean National TKD team topless in mountain snow training in endurance training. Some of the folklore myths and legends of Northern China, for example 'The Condor Heroes' depicts a mythical 'Fire and Ice Island' and it's where they develop 'super' powers. Also, I don't think they're Chinese, I think they're Persian, or Tocharians, though there's a lot of nomadic tribes depicted in the story.
That's a great story. So did you train Tae Kwon Do in the coldness in the building sites?
One tip, on cold showers, I have found somewhat useful to stand near the cold water, rather than get the initial 'shock' of the cold water, seems to give the same benefits, but without the harshness.
do you mean not going into the cold water at all?
Very interesting about brain growth and regeneration, I think similar has been said about meditating, and I wonder if some of the intent plays a significant part. Like Inka said about settling the limbic brain, and not setting off the amygdala into fear(flight), but more into the fight mode. So, when the monks go off to the mountain for 30 years, they intend to come back, and generally they will have done preparatory meditation work. With the advent of the massive progress in neuroscience this last decade, it should fix that we can 'think and grow smarter', if this is our aim. Certainly many old paradigms are being busted, but often it seems, that somewhere in the world something, of whatever new neuroscience 'discovery' is found, that is something found in x, y or z culture.
Yes, I think it gives both benefits, firstly the catecholamines and, secondly the resilience. It helps to train that prefrontal - limbic control that is also achieved through meditation and other psychological practices.
Good point, thanks for the comment.
Thanks for the great information... is this the same as cryotherapy ?
Cryotherapy is mentioned in the episode as well in 08:25 onwards
Cold exposure can take the form of cryo, yes. but it's very different from cold bathing.
@@iaminkaland thank you very much
How dopamine gets measured? Blood work?
There’s no way to measure it atm directly. It’s also different in different brain areas
