KenDBerryMD Hey doc, would you be interested in tackling the subject of lymes as there may be a connection to diet? Ticks are allegedly immune to sugar and red blood cells need glucose as well as the borellia bacteria. Could there possibly be a symbiotic relationship going on there. I just got a hunch that there could be something going on that got me thinking since lymes first showed up in a child during the 70s coincidentally with the new usda dietary recommendations. Idk, it seems like something you’d like to think about and I think a lot of people would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Dr Berry and Dr. Saladino, What do you do when eating fat makes you fat and protein is causing gluconeogenesis on a carnivore diet? I am anxious and depressed all the time, inflamed, and the main thing is hungry. My liver seems to want to produce glucose instead of ketones. What do you do with someone with severe insulin resistance ? and all my doctor wants to do is put me on blood pressure meds and other drugs. I have diagnosed sleep apnea and use the dreamstation. My glucose readings are anywhere from 85 to 120 and my latest A1c was 5.2. I am at a loss, I am really stressed and everything bothers me and seems like a chore. All I want is to feel better and happy like others in these threads and posts. I watch your videos for advice and I am at a loss. Thank you for everything that you do. Losartan and Metoprolol is what she has me on. I do not cheat, I recently added back some veggies and avocado to see if it would help. I have been doing this so long it has become a habit, and I don't know what else to do. I dont sleep much and my body feels like it is starving. Please help if you can.

@Danger McAwesome TY for your support. In my lifetime I have learned to have an open mind about much that comes my way. I was brought to my knees when I got the diganosis, but I handed it over to God. Many things come into play when one's health deteriorates. Mind over matter, Faith, Stress, Love - basically life in general - all should be taken into consideration when one is faced with a diagnosis and that is what I did. I also extensively researched all types of cancer treatments. Yes I am in fantastic health & BELIEVE I will live many more years. Never lose your compassion for another person as it TOUCHED me immensely & it is a wonderful trait that not everyone has. I believe we all touch one another's life for a reason & my telling my story is to touch just ONE person when they are diagnosed with a terminal DIS-
EASE (of the body). BLESSINGS & 💕

Back when I was in high school I went to the doctor complaining of depression. First thing she suggested was a pill. Many years later I've become very focused on diet's impact on health (mental and otherwise). I'm now convinced that diet, sleep, exercise and healthy relationships with God and people are the real key to health.

I, personally, have been doing a ketogenic diet for some time. My bouts of depression (as well as a myriad of other health problems) have been significantly reduced. I never associated the decreased episodes of depression with my diet.
As far as what the therapist recommended for my granddaughter...it was all sources of sugar. So, my daughter has to shop like I do.
Knowing what I know now after several years of research, I would never be happy having anyone I love eating processed food of any kind.
BTW, research is something I enjoy and I can spot the BS pretty quickly in the "scientific studies."
Regardless of what the labels, the FDA, or any of the other alphabet agencies say, if it comes from the supermarket and contains more than a few ingredients, it isn't good for you. It is poison. Leave it on the shelf.

    • @sulebo2153

I am a testament to sugar causing depression. My sweet addiction started as teenager, coincidentally at the same time hormones are kicking in, and that's when I became moody, and no motivation to do much in life. I soldiered on for another 40+ years when we learned about sugars so I cut back. But then I met Ben & Jerry and became addicted, sometimes eating two pints in one night. No energy, no motivation, kind of suicidal like "oh well, if things don't work out I can always kill myself". I researched suicide methods but never quite felt such despair as to try anything. I think my Aries nature kept me alive. Anyhoo, finally I broke up with Ben & Jerry, and Papa John, and within days the clouds lifted. I experimented with that off and on and it was flipping a switch. So then I learned about carbs and Keto and have eliminated every molecule of processed foods (including condiments), and anything white, except still experimenting with potatoes (my first love). I'm 65 now, energetic, skinnier and optimistic. I believe I have something more to do in life now, although I'm not sure what it is, lol. Oh, and all of the above holds true for exercise as well. Just walking one mile every morning lifts me up and I enjoy my day more.

@Amber Steademan I am moving my children into more of a carnivore diet now. I have realized and learned that myself and all 3 of my boys do much better without any produce or sugars. Two are diagnosed with high functioning autism and ADHD, along with other things, like tics, intermittent explosive and oppositional defiance disorder. I myself had tics and am pretty sure I would have been diagnosed with asperger's if my parents had taken me in to get evaluated. My children are doing a lot better and so am I. Heck, right now, I'm anout to eat my one meal which is pastured eggs with runny yolk and some sausage, along with some raw, pastured cheese which doesn't irritate us like grain fed pasteurized junk.

That's a good approach BUT just taking a talking and therapy approach will NOT work for everybody. Ur going to get patients who won't benefit from talk therapy because they will have a biological cause of there ocd, depressionnor anxiety etc. So testing testosterone, estrogen, thyroid like they mentioned and other lab tests need to be ruled out because something in there body is causing the illness. So first you do the biological than you can do the programming mentally with therapy. Ur on the right track tho but I would add more physical testing to your career for your patients. Sometimes medications are the only thing that will work... But that's when everything has been exhausted

Was diagnosed in my late 20's as "clinically depressed". Was put on 7 or 8 different anti-depressants over a 10 year period. Was never suicidal until I was on them. Started planning out my death. Thankfully had a moment clarity, stopped the drugs cold turkey. Ten more years later forced my GP to do Thyroid tests and came up Hashimoto Hypothyroid. Started medication and went Ketogenic lifestyle pretty much immediately. I have never been happier, first time in 40 years! Why didn't they do this back then, I'd not have gone through the crap and BS I had to.

Thank you for bringing up this very important topic! I experienced this behaviour from all doctors I went to here in Germany too.
They didn't listen for more than a few minutes before offering me pills (and sometimes rudely dismissing my concerns about side effects).
In the end I've never taken them and been able to get out of depression and majorly improve anxiety and panic attacks with mostly diet and lifestyle changes. Another major remedy for me is working out regularly.
It's so sad that people are at the mercy of a system that doesn't seem to have their health in mind at all. Even more tragic if people believe that it's the only way to get better and don't want to listen to alternative advice - or aren't willing to take responsibility for their own health...
We certainly need more doctors like you who spread awareness about this and empower people.

20 years ago I had an excellent physician. I told her about the side effects of depression meds. She said, " You know, I don't think you need it anyway. You need to 'get rid of the problem'." My ex-husband was the issue, and she cared enough to say the truth
What a doc♥️ Doc Berry reminds me of her.

I absolutely agree with what you both are saying here. Unfortunately my experience ...and I'm Canadian so our medical system is slightly different here...I've found that if you go to your doc here and suggest some of these things such as dietary causes or you try to be proactive and researched, that you get a lot of pushback from the doctor. They know best in their view and arent willing to entertain alternatives than what they learned. The only docs ive seen here that are willing to attack root causes are naturopathic doctors and unfortunately these doctors can only be visited if you have extra financial means or an excellent employee insurance plan.
I've worked for a naturopath and chiropractors and ive seen so many issues healed simply with dietary change...crap in equals crap out just makes sense.
We as patients NEED to be researching what we can do for ourselves through diet and doctors need to be encouraging this.

Thank you so much doctors. I am so relieved to hear doctors talk about not only the human state of the body, but more importantly psychiatric. I have had a lot of family experience with mental health and now of course with the influence of the government preventing those drugs which worked (the streets are full of people suffering and homeless). Even though I don't believe that pills are the answer, until now no one has spoken about diet. I, myself, was plagued by doctors to use certain antidepressants my whole life, when in fact, it was SUGAR, SUGAR, SUGAR and multiple diets that were actually starving me. Proof: depression, no gall bladder, no appendix, problems with intestines, hysterectomy in my 20's, high blood pressure, thyroid oblation, etc. I thank my Lord that you two are coming forward to address these issues. I am now on Carnivore eating from Ketogenic and I have never felt so WONDERFUL and WHOLE my entire life. Thank you Lord for not letting me get involved with the psychiatric merry-go-round.

You're absolutely right about grief. I lost my grandma and dad a month apart in 2017, and I wailed, cried and fumed as needed, and my grieving process was much shorter from knowledge to acceptance than it was for my mom for example. When she died I'd been on antidepressants, so it has never felt like I fully grieved.

In my experience, asking for lab work immediately puts doctors on the defensive. I have a history of thyroid problems (nodules, goiter) adrenal issues, and other hormonal issues (high estrogen and very low progesterone). I am now post menopausal and have been chronically fatigued and depressed. I filled out my new patient questionnaire with all of this information and then asked for a complete thyroid panel and hormone levels when I saw a new PCP. He told me none of those things have anything to do with my chronic fatigue, anxiety or depression and flatly refused. When I insisted he asked, "And just where did you go to medical school?" He said if I wasn't willing to take prescription medication I might as well leave. I left. :(

As a psychiatric nurse this topic is so important and frustrating for me. I work in a psyche facility in a hospital and all they serve are poor quality proteins, but mostly carbs. Peanut butter and jelly packaged sandwiches, graham crackers and juices, starchy vegetable, potatoes, and packaged gravy mixes…the patients are always hungry constantly asking for food and always gain a lot of weight on any long term stay. It drives be nuts to medicate patients to help them but at the same time feed them sugary snacks that is the hospital provided diet.

Absolutely agree about the mental health when going through hard things. I've been able to handle almost anything through life without therapy or drugs to treat me... and I've lived through some tough stuff... and at age 50 I ended up going through therapy after 11 years with a narcissistic gaslighting alcoholic husband and a resulting divorce. It was the best thing I ever did! I'm not kidding when I say that I had gotten to a place where I didn't even recognize my own face in the mirror and didn't quite realize it. Through therapy, I realized one day as I was looking in the mirror that I literally recognized my own face again! Who knew we could seem so strong yet be so weak or hurt as to not even recognize our own face in the mirror?
On the plant toxins, I'm allergic to a LOT of plants, and can only eat many of them cooked. So I've already avoided most plants for years. I'm keto the last 4 years, and keto-carnivore the past year. I've started a week ago going full carnivore to see how that goes. Seriously considering also getting a DNA test.

I've been on medication since in my 20's and I'm no better off now than I was back then. Insurance has made it impossible to see a functional doctor by not covering functional medicine. I've come to the conclusion finally that they are truly treating us in a fashion that keeps us perpetually sick in order to line their pockets with more and more money. They don't care about us, it's their greediness that's important to them. Personally I'm sick of mainstream doctors. I'm hoping and praying someday soon all this crap will change. I truly wish you were down here in Indianapolis. I probably would not be able to afford you, but just to know you are bringing attention to this attrocity is a wonderful thing. Thank you Dr. Berry! Congratulations Dr. Saladino on finishing up you fellowship. As someone who works in a teaching hospital and sits on an evaluation committee, I know how hard intern, residents, and fellows work to become a doctor. I wouldn’t do it. You will not have a shortage of psychiatric patients. I have been a nurse since 1991 the last 20 years in the ICU. I have seen the increase in mental disorders. I remember when suicides usually occurred during the holidays and the first of the year. Now, it is a 365 day occurrence. Our hospital is spending sooo much money on ‘sitters’ for people who need someone to just keep an eye on a patient. A few years ago our hospital dictated to cut back on these sitter. Ha! That backfired on them when a suicidal patient decided to do a swan dive from the 10th floor of our hospital. Then the hospital was so paranoid. You even thought ‘suicide’ and you got a sitter. I was even pulled to be a sitter. Can you imagine the cost? A senior RN paid call back pay to sit?! Thirty years ago ‘sitters’ was not in my vocabulary. Our hospital this year has implement the BURT program (Behavioral Unit Response Team). This was started after one of our nurses got the crap beaten out of her by a patient. Unheard of 30 years ago. Then there is the homeless problem. So sad. In your new stomping grounds homelessness has skyrocketed. Im sure San Diego is not alone in this problem. These people do not need meds. They need nutritional health. On August 15-18 I am attending the Integrative Medicine for Mental Health Conference in San Diego. This is my first time to attend. I’m just trying to understand this problem better.

When you say "Which pill is it" that's EXACTLY what happened to me as a patient. I was at university and I figured I might be able to benefit from a psychologist. So I went to the school psychologist, and I liked him. At the end of that first interview, he asked me to go to a medical doctor just to make sure I didn't have any kind of medical problem causing my depression. I could have talked to the psychologist about an array of difficult circumstances I's had to deal with and thought I'd gotten over. Horrible things. Anyways, I followed the psychologist's advice. I went to the doctor, who was a psychiatrist. I was expecting the physician to test my blood and rule out things like thyroid problems, blood sugar problems, and I knew he'd give me a clean slate and I could waltz back to the psychologist the following Tuesday.
The psychiatrist wouldn't test my blood. I brought up low blood sugar. I'd been diagnosed with that at maybe ten-years-old or so. He interrupted me to tell me I was depressed. Nothing made me feel better the first several tries, but even with the ones that made me feel better, didn't improve my productivity. Plenty of people feel better when they ingest something - what's really important though, maybe even along with that, is that they learn skills to deal with the blows that life can deal people. I talked to my psychiatrist once about some of the things I'd been through. He grew pail. I don't blame him for this. I've been very reluctant to burden anyone about what I've been through. But antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications alone do not solve the problem.
I am taking to you as a patient, and if doctors are foolish enough not to be able to learn from their patients, they're not going to be very successful.
I'd like to make an important point on counseling, as a consumer of psychological services. The point I'd like to make is, a young person needs to be coddled and be given strength. Nobody needs to suggest or ask if anything happened. As a person starts to feel more secure, what has been repressed will eventually flood out like a broken dam. But I'd been broken already. When I finally realized saw the complete memories that some terrible flashes in my mind hinted at, I could confront what had been tormenting me.
Once I knew what I was dealing with, I didn't need to talk about the past anymore. What helped me after that was cognitive therapy and motivational therapy. I'm not sure if that's what it's called, but therapy that taught me to set goals and break them down into daily tasks, which I would write down the night before, so I woke up knowing what to do for each day. I hate to burden people with the horrible things I've experienced. A good psychologist or psychiatrist has to have empathy. They won't like some things they hear.
But they should be motivated by the fact that if they're conscientious, they will change a horror story into a happy life. It's OK if medication is needed, but the things that cause problems need to be acknowledged; never suggested, but acknowledged.

It seems to all becoming clear! I read 10% human which DR Berry refers to in his book and as Alanna Collen explains it. I am glad that people are getting away from the same old thinking that has dogged us for so long. I appreciate y'all getting the information out. Thank you!

I have CRPS with IST & after two years of this I’m still on all of my starting doses Of my meds & refuse to go up . They do work , I could not function at all & my vitals were a mess . ( dysautonomia )
I successfully took myself off of a heavy dose of Ativan . Just that alone , I’m so thankful to have my mind back . Now I’m doing ketovore , trying to go full on carnivore .
Next step is to get off the antidepressants, slowly.
