I'm on low carb/ keto diet and intermittement fasting for 6 years now. 16:8. I used to have 2 bigger meals in my eating window, but now when I'm in menopause it suits me better to have 3 smaller meals. Last meal is protein shake about 5 pm, and then I'm fasting till 9 am next day. I'm doing ballet every day at home for 30 minutes and I didn't gain any weight in menopause, my body looks thiner and more muscular then in my 30's.

Wow, that's amazing to hear about your successful experience with the low carb/keto diet and intermittent fasting! It's great that you've been able to adjust your meal plan to better suit your needs during menopause and still maintain your weight and even see improvements in your body composition. It's also inspiring to hear about your dedication to daily ballet practice. Keep up the great work!
@@AnnTsungMD yes, thank you. 🌹 My only problem in menopause are hot flashes, all days and nights. So I don't sleep well and enough. I don't want take hormones for that, because I was on hormones (birth control) almost 30 years in past...so no hormones for me never again.
Quick question do you do 16:8 everyday. I am in peri menopause too and they say you should 14hr fasts with one long one and 2 days of non fasts. Dr Mindy recommends this. I fasted long hours before and it really effected my hormones
Back in my 20s I always skipped breakfast then was told in my 30s to eat small meals now at 55 I’ve been doing IF since last fall. I’ve followed Dr H for years but found you and the other lady doctors that have taught me so much about my body and microbiomes etc. I feel better than my 30s! Good clean feast and a clean fast it works !!
I do 16 /8 and sometimes 20/4 as well as a huge one meal day on those days, it is where I feel my best, I am 63 and I feel better than I have in years. Thank you for your lab as well.
Great to hear that you found a fasting schedule that works for you! Fasting has many benefits, like improved insulin sensitivity and weight loss. It's important to find a schedule that suits you and consult a healthcare professional if needed. Consistency is key.
I'm 74 years old and retired so I am on an 18/6 eating pattern (I don't have to follow lunch & coffee breaks). Many times I have health podcasts on while I'm working around the house. The only negative thing about Cynthia's podcasts (for me) is that she is so good looking and I have to stop and actually watch the podcast.
I'm 77 and have been practicing a 14/16-8 hour IF for a year now and have maintained my desired weight. I also eat about 700-800 good calories and feel satiated. My body works well even though I have hereditary arthritis.
Do you dry fast, and like the other questions, how often and how long? Have you always done it and not aged, or was there a point that you turned back the clock do to speak?
I only eat two meals a per , any which way . No matter if I skip a meal or eat them within a time window , I get the same results . For 10 years I’ve been at it 😊
I'm 73 and spent 17 years suffering horribly from RA, IBS, IC. I was 100 lbs overweight and utterly miserable. An RA "flare" would just about take me out of commission with a pain level around 8 or 9 and most other days I lived constantly with a 6 or 7. Life was miserable. About 2 yrs ago my lab work identified celiac disease. No more gluten in my diet and what do you know, my IBS just disapeared! But I was 100 lbs overweight and was humiliated by it. My vanity and self respect was rock bottom. I never quit wearing quality, stylish clothing and my grooming and makeup were the same as before the weight gain, but who's kidding who - I knew I was an unhealthy mess! I watched one of Dr. Hyman's podcasts and it changed my life! I had already realized how much better I felt living gluten free, but I had a horrible sweet tooth that was killing me. I started a keto diet and an 18:6 intermittent fast and within 2 weeks I had lost 17 lbs, and by the end of the month my pain and inflammatio that had ruled my life went from the daily level of 7 to a 1 or 2. That alone made my activity level increase! A year later I've gone from a BMI of morbidly obese to just slightly overweight and I'm working on the last 15-20 lbs. I haven't reached my goal quite yet, but have my life, health and self respect back. Before starting this lifestyle (which is SO very do-able and sustainable!) My A1c was a high pre-diabetes and my blood pressure was 140/80. My triglycerides were 100. Now my A1c is completely out of pre-diabetes range, triglicerides are normal, BP runs about 110/65 and my pulse is like a marathon runner's (my Dr said!) So I'm a walking, talking testament to just how much our food/diet lifestyle impacts our health. I feel younger now at 73 than I did when I was in my early 50's! I hope this wonderful podcast on the benefits of fasting will change other's lives for the better too! My first 2-3 days of fasting were a little rough, but I was utterly determined and motivated. Then quickly my body adjusted and it became so easy and felt so "right" and good, actually. It is so lovely to not have bloating or cramping or just any "digestion" issues going on constantly. Besides giving your body that "break", I find that I so enjoy feeling lighter and less weighed down. And the biggest benefits of all (like the release of anti-aging growth hormones) you can't immediately feel, but it is so GREAT (esp. at 73!) to know that you are helping roll back aging! What a "trip" to run into old friends that haven't seen me for a while and relish the look of shock on their faces! And this lifestyle is FREE. No plastic surgery, botox, face lifts, etc. All it takes is a little rescheduling at first. Now I love not having to spend so much time in the kitchen preparing food and cleaning up. Because my keto diet is higher in fat I very rarely experience any hunger at all. So I'm not having to call on "willpower" and "self-discipline" like I did when I tried to follow low calorie, low-fat diets. I'm not feeling riddled with guilt or shame when that "willpower" was just not there for me. 😢 While Keto diets aren't the answer for everyone not struggling with inflammation from auto-immune disease, I just want every person that is struggling with their weight and /or or health to give fasting/ intermittent fasting a solid try. It's life changing, truly!

I’m just curious: I’m on my second day of 16/8 intermittent fasting. I have heard the keto diet helps with mental health issues. Does the IF I’m doing also help with mental health issues, as it also causes ketones in the blood? Thanks in advance.
I’ve been doing intermittent fasting for 3 months now 16/8, and I am naturally low blood pressure. I notice that my neck hurt due to fasting, maybe because of low blood pressure. I like to know how should a person with low blood pressure fast?

Well, there can be many things to contribute to a loss of insulin sensitivity; loss of muscle mass, aging process...as we transition into perimenopause and menopause and lose estrogen this can be exacerbated; chronic stress, poor sleep, exposure to toxins, etc. I would definitely dig deeper and ensure your healthcare provider is looking at inflammatory markers and fasting insulin to help guide recommendations
other benefits : less time spent on recipe hunting, grocery shopping time is shortened. more time to enjoy family less need for cabinet space. enhances minimalist life style . less stress on family finances. ALl. WIN WIN.
Waiting on someone to get into how to fast for those of us that are diabetic, hypoglycemic, or otherwise cannot function for longer than 5-6 hours without food. All these lectures on fasting and nobody has answered that yet.
Health care costs are out of control. Going WFPB vegan can save money, pain and suffering from disease. Lower your chance of high blood pressure, heart disease and cancer by going vegan. Hospitals, doctors offices and schools should be places where good nutrition is taught and provided not places that contribute to disease and obesity. It is crazy the hospitals are feeding people the very food that caused the heart disease, high blood pressure or cancer that they are treating. Every person in the hospital should receive some nutrition education before being released. Every doctor visit should be an opportunity to educate patients about how food choices impacts their health outcomes. The fact that doctors do not get nutrition training as part of their training makes no sense. Medicare and Medicaid should require nutrition education as part of patient care. Focus should be on food choices.
Agree , with exception that vegan misses out on essential nutrients. Vegetarian is better for body - we need animal based fat (e.g. butter) for optimal human health: Vitamin K2, cholesterol and others
Agree with absolutely everything you said except for veganism being the answer. I have autoimmune disease (Rheumatoid Arthritis) and the key is finding out what modification we need to adjust our diet for optimum health and wellness. I personally LOVE veggies, don't get me wrong, but I've had to eliminate nightshade veggies, and have to severely restrict veggies with lectins, ie, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant - all of which I love! 😟 I gagged at the thought of the Keto Diet that was recommended for me with my crippling and painful RA, but I am now doing a very clean Keto now and am enjoying it because I make sure to eat my carbs in as many dark, leafy green veg and organic anti-oxident berries as possible. No sugar, (or chemical substitutes) no gluten, and precious little processed food, and only those with no additives, preservatives, natural flavors, etc. No more diet cokes, I drink an occasional herbal tea but mostly gallons of water. I make my own dressings with either a good EVOO or avocado oil, fresh herbs. My meat and fish is sustainably sourced, grass fed and finished - absolutely no hormones. I am elderly, so do an 18:6 IF. My health and wellness has dramatically changed. My lipid profile, A1c, blood pressure, etc. are in normal range. No more crippling pain. While I would recommend IF to anyone, I know that when it comes to diet it is necessary to seek out a plan that will treat & heal your body optimally - and that can be different from person to person. Someone on this comment thread said to not listen or trust UA-camrs but to check with your Doctor. You can't always rely on your Dr. unfortunately. Sadly, my highly educated (Yale & John's Hopkins) Rheumatologist NEVER suggested my diet could help or affect my RA. Instead he always prescribed dangerous, horrible side effect biologic drugs and narcotic painkillers and steroid shots. You are so right that traditional medicine does not address the nutrition to fit the health issue. Advice to lose weight is as vague as "eat less, exercise more" when with certain conditions you are doing that but it is not really helping. I know that You Tube advertisements are not always reliable or legimate. But Dr. Hyman's podcasts (that he often shares with other health and nutrition authorities) all with information and research on eliminating the symptoms of autoimmune diseases has totally changed my life!
I love how I feel when I've fasted 16/8!! I am in my early 30s but just had a baby 2 months ago I am nursing her too. I am wondering if its still safe to do this will it mess with my milk supply? I usually dont do more then 12 hour fast over night while nursing. Any guidance?
Congratulations on your new baby! I'd avoid fasting, especially if you are breast feeding, but 12 hrs of digestive rest is likely ok, but be mindful of ensuring you are not missing any macros (breast feeding increases our caloric needs)
@@cynthiathurlow3564 Thank you so much! I appreciate your feedback and will wait to resume the 16/8 until she is no longer nursing. Better safe then sorry.
Congratulations on your baby! I did low carb during and after my pregnancy and I had a much lower milk supply with my first child. I decided not to do low carb with my second (alot of it being out of my control) but I have alot more milk this time around. I’m struggling to lose the weight but I don’t want to drop my milk supply bc I know how draining it feels. I will just wait until I’m done breastfeeding or do longer fasts. Still conscious of what I’m eating.
Thank you! ❤ You know what, come to think of it because of what you shared. I did notice a difference in my supply with my previous child when nursing when I tried to cut back my carbs as well. I'm trying to listen to my body i feel like this time around im struggling to get enough healthy fats! It's so crazy how things change in regards to nutritional needs when your pregnant /or nursing! I agree with you on waiting to restrict any certain thing... I guess we need to just go off how we are feeling and pay attention to cravings and make sure to keep hydrated!
Im shocked that they referenced people being starved during WII that is not helping peoplewith eating disorders to get better dreadful we are not meant to starve ourselves
You just lost me, when you said "or what gender you identefy with". Male and female have different needs, period! So sad to give to this gender none sense!
Holy Cow! That’s EXACTLY what I thought when she said that! It discredits her whole approach to “biology”. Why do normally rational well educated people sign on to this fallacy??
I don't think she meant it in the way you took it. She actually spoke of the different needs of women and men, and even talked about the needs of women at various ages, pre-menopause VS menopause etc.

@@tr6151 Thank you - I believe it's osteoarthritis, but I'm in the middle of getting some medical testing done at the moment to give me more clarity. Thank you so much for your help 🙏
Ask your doctor don't rely on you tubers
@@michelles2299 yes, I do already, I have a functional medicine Dr. It's just good to get other opinions from other experts
This conversation alone is huge reason why trans persons need their own sports categories and not be allowed to compete against biological women.
Cynthia, I have been on intermittent fasting for quite a while now and on low carbs high protein for 4 wks now.
Foe some reason, that I hope u can help me with. My blood sugar in the morning afer 12 hour fast is on the hi end 97, 98 and stays like this until my 16-17 hr fast.
I thought IF would improve my metabolic flexibility.
Also hi levels in the middle of the night.
Would love to hear your input. Feeling frustrated and disappointed with endocrinologists who keep telling me that all is well….
Thank, Lena
Well, there can be many things to contribute to a loss of insulin sensitivity; loss of muscle mass, aging process...as we transition into perimenopause and menopause and lose estrogen this can be exacerbated; chronic stress, poor sleep, exposure to toxins, etc. I would definitely dig deeper and ensure your healthcare provider is looking at inflammatory markers and fasting insulin to help guide recommendations
other benefits : less time spent on recipe hunting, grocery shopping time is shortened. more time to enjoy family
less need for cabinet space. enhances minimalist life style . less stress on family finances. ALl. WIN WIN.
I tried but just cannot get borax anywhere in Spain. Where can I order borax on line?
Amazon
time stamps would've been great
Does fasting cause cortisol to rise????
Potentially; that's why stress mgmt and high quality sleep are so important
Waiting on someone to get into how to fast for those of us that are diabetic, hypoglycemic, or otherwise cannot function for longer than 5-6 hours without food. All these lectures on fasting and nobody has answered that yet.
HRT is not an option for estrogen positive breast cancer patients/survivors.
Fasting is magic
When I was growing up in the 60s and 70s we NEVER had snacks. When I came to the USA I gained 30 pounds in just 6 months. HORRIBLE.
Avoid getting heavy , eliminates careless snacking & sugar , whalla! 🚲
Always exercise & play hard , & you won't need a diet !
Vegan is not good nutrition!
One of my favorite saying is "Fu(l< Snacks!"
@@OpalEyeRye You are so welcome, enjoy this special time with your daughter, it goes by so fast :)
I have an eating disorder, but I just call it fasting 😊
Have you checked your gut? OAT . I saw a Dr who said people with eating disorders having gut issues
Great video! And I would have bet that MS. Thurlow was in her thirties.
Thanks!
Im shocked that they referenced people being starved during WII that is not helping peoplewith eating disorders to get better dreadful we are not meant to starve ourselves
Beer and cigarettes keep my looking young. Just went to my 40th class reunion and I was voted youngest looking.😊
Need more commercials please😮😮😮.
If your this, if your that. It’s too much
You just lost me, when you said "or what gender you identefy with". Male and female have different needs, period!
So sad to give to this gender none sense!
AGREEEEEED.
Really damages credibility.
@@Dawn-pe5to that exactly why I did not accept her gender comment. Wanting to please everyones "fantasie" is not needed when one is convaying facts!
“Where are you life stage wise, what gender you identify with” Sorry, what? This just put me right off.
I never knew about the benefits of the Nazi diet😮
Shocking they should be ashamed referencing this
Glad they didn't reference the Black American slave diet either.
Too woke for me to listen to her advice
You sell books and you look tired....
Please no woke stuff!!

I'm 77 and have been practicing a 14/16-8 hour IF for a year now and have maintained my desired weight. I also eat about 700-800 good calories and feel satiated. My body works well even though I have hereditary arthritis.
*CLIck ontoMy Truth!!!*
@sharonDanleyAdvocacy If you don’t mind me asking, what type of arthritis do you have and for how long and have you had any arthritic symptoms in past ? Do you mean to say after a year of IF, it helped your arthritis . Thanks
@@tr6151 Thank you - I believe it's osteoarthritis, but I'm in the middle of getting some medical testing done at the moment to give me more clarity. I've been experiencing growing symptoms of arthritis for the past 10 years and lately it has escalated. What I meant was after a year of IF, my body works as well as it can given my growing mobility challenges. But one of the benefits of having released 65 lbs (which the IF was a significant component of my approach) is I don't have to have a knee replacement AND discovered after viewing some X-rays that it is the arthritis that is the problem with my knee and nothing else. Phew. Does that help?
@@SharonDanleyAdvocacy thanks for the update. Hope you feel better soon. Take care
@@tr6151 Thank you
I’m just curious: I’m on my second day of 16/8 intermittent fasting. I have heard the keto diet helps with mental health issues. Does the IF I’m doing also help with mental health issues, as it also causes ketones in the blood? Thanks in advance.
