I saw Peter on this tour in Glasgow, Scotland in May 1993 with my new girlfriend (now my wife of 29 years) and it is still remains today one of the best staged tours I’ve ever seen, with groundbreaking use of lighting and screens and the dual stage - combining that with Peter’s wonderful sense of theatre and story it was an absolutely fabulous show!!

So agree with you. 63 years old. Seen a lot of incredible concerts (although your list takes the cake) but Peter Gabriel’s was the best. It was life altering. Truly. Changed who I was and how I see the world. We played at our wedding and I hope it is playing when I leave this world.

For me as well, the ‚Secret World Tour‘ from Peter Gabriel was the best concert I ever attended (and I attended a lot). It was like dipping into his secret world with a transformation from the streamlined ‚Come Talk to me‘ in a Telephone Booth (does anyone remember what this is?) over a growing tree (Shaking the Tree) to this incredible finale with ‚In your Eyes‘ and the wonderful Paula Cole. It was epic and shows what a great musician and world music promoter Peter Gabriel is. Thanks for your review

That concert ("Secret World Live") is my favorite concert film ever. I still listen to it regularly. I love Paula's singing on this, and also the amazing voice of Papa Wemba (RIP). I've seen Peter on tour multiple times, and it's always a fantastic show. I just saw his most recent tour for the "i/o" album, and it was glorious both musically and visually. I am still holding out hope that there will be a concert film released of the fabulous tour that he did with Sting, which I'm so glad I attended.

Next to Pink Floyd's Pulse tour this is the best I've ever seen. This is an incredible, joyful celebration.

Unusual for a singer! He pushes a lot of air through the chords. Which should not be sustainable and make a voice thinner but in his case it works better than it should! Secret, don't let anybody tell you it can't be done! Explore yourself

Great insight. Peter can also clean up his voice, especially on higher notes, but your observation stands.

58 now, having thoroughly enjoyed all genre of music in the peak of 80's and 90's (late nights dancing my A off at clubs and lounges, concerts small and arena size, etc)--GAWD how I miss just hanging out with friends, releasing all the day's stresses naturally!! Peter G is one of my faves, and I'm glad to see this review. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Brilliant! Fascinating. Love your description of how Gabriel uses his voice. I had the good fortune to see Peter last year for THE FIRST TIME. Such a wonderful concert with his mature voice sounding so, so good. As a Genesis fan I am so sorry not to have been able to catch him back then. But I did hear Phil with the band in 1978 (but never solo, dang). That concert blew me away. Best of my life. Pink Floyd, ELP, Weather Report all came close. But no. Phil and Genesis was the best. This 'In Your Eyes' live is at the top of my list along with Phil in Paris 2004.
    Oh, to have been there!

You're right, this song will absolutely lift your spirits. Everything about this is top-notch and it looks like everyone on stage had a fantastic time performing this. And to stage this concert in the round requires very careful planning and execution.

Your comment on this song is just wonderful. Thanks. This man and his live performances are always impressive. His voice, his lyrics, his diverse music... everything is fantastic for me. That's what I always have to have a little bit of Peter's music around me every day. I need his music for my inner well-being.

I’ve been listening to this song since I heard it in Say Anything. You just made me listen to it so differently than I ever have. Wow! The drummer the bass. I never really tuned into them. Thanks to you I will never miss them again. Thanks so much for the wonderful education on something I thought I knew ❤

... speaking of Tony Levin think of this: In most bands the bass is considered as a part of the rhythm section. In PGs band the bass played by Tony Levin is a melodic device. So many of PGs songs are carried by the melodic lines of the bass guitar!

My parents weren't really Gabriel fans, especially my dad seemed to have gotten his fill of Peter Gabriel when his stuff was new. The first time I heard him I was about 25 and it was Don't Give Up with Kate Bush. I must have listened to it nonstop for a week, I was just blown away. Both by his and Bush's performance but also the timeless social consciousness of it. Us and So are two of my favorites and along with the second Tears for Fears album and Hounds of Love are the elite 80s albums in terms of predicting where pop would go in the next several decades.

Hey John, thank you for the lovely content and analysis. :)
I'd love to see an initial reaction video to one of Japans most prolific and impressive female vocalists right now, and especially this live performance she did in LA this year. It is equal parts hauntingly beautiful and horrifyingly visceral. Real extreme emotion here.
The video name, so you can simply copy it, is:"【LIVE映像】愛して愛して愛して PEACOCK THEATER Los Angeles, CA 2024.3.29【Ado】". And heres a link, just in case. :) ua-cam.com/video/HmkbBdD8044/v-deo.html
It's amazing that Ado's voice tells the story so well even with the language barrier. This song is about a neglected child yearning for love throughout her life, first from her parents, then relationships later in life, then anybody (Aishite, aishite, aishite, motto, motto; basically meaning "love me, love me, love me, more, more"). She sings things like "Aren't I a good kid? Don't I get good grades?", as well as singing about confessing her love in high school in her childish soft voice, and then breaks out in a psychotic tantrum when she doesn't get the love she needs.
It is an performance that tears me apart every single time I hear it, I'd love to see your reaction to it as well, as her unbelievable technique and educational value from your analysis would surely be invaluable. Also simply for the entertainment value of watching someone experience Ado for the first time. It's something special haha!
    Thanks again for the videos:)
    - Best
