Absolutely. I declined to go to the London show because I was starting to hate arenas. When the BluRay and album came out, big regrets! 🤦♂️ I did go to the next tour at the Docklands Arena, but I don’t think it was as good as this tour.
Had this on DVD and recently upgraded to the bluray. This section usually makes me Well up. An amazing band but special mention to David Rhodes (guitar) and Tony Levin (bass) who's voices have been on most of his albums too (Tony from the first, David since the 3rd)
I mourn the passing of this wonderful era of performance art! Won't someone please pick up that baton? I want to feel anew the light, the heat, the joy and bliss of this magnificent performance! experience
There is an interview with Paula Cole, where she explains that she was "unknown" before Gabriel recruited her for this tour & he was so kind & smart...the experience was so educational & FUN it would stay with her forever. They worked hard to inject joy into the performance.
Love to see you review Paula Cole’s solo work. This Fire is a stellar album. Anything on it is worth reviewing, but the opening track, Tiger, is a real eye opener. She is spectacular.
After this tour ended, Paula Cole released her first solo album, “Harbinger,” and then started a tour opening for Sarah McLachlan. Notable because the industry execs insisted that you couldn’t have two female artists on a tour; the pushback McLachlan got over this was her inspiration to start the first Lilith Fair. It’s a shame that “Harbinger” gets so little attention; it’s a fantastic album. The track “I Am So Ordinary” will break your heart.
Peter Gabriel: Unmatched voice, great musician, composer, art, genius, mentor, fighter for human rights, pacifist, explorer of tribal music, committed to planet Earth and its memory. Thank you Bethany
Having been in love with this particular performance for many years now, I have no hesitation in saying it is easily one of the most transcendent, culturally unifying moments in music history!
••• My daughter echoed my sentiments when I showed her this performance a few years ago -- "I think this is what heaven might look like". Vid makes me tear up from the beauty. Good reaction. 👍🏼
In my heart, I consider this performance one of the most beautiful songs ever sung. I have seen this vid over 50 times, and it always brings tears and smiles. It is the synergy of the voices, instruments, dance and lyrics that provokes a joy and sadness simultaneously. With the virtuoso Dr. L. Shankar on violin and the fabulous Tony Levin on bass, the musicians bring the vocals a surreal atmosphere. I will see this performance many more times. I almost think it should be highly suggested to any living human. Love to all.
I love Peter Gabriel's voice and I adore this song, but for me, the high light of the entire set is that note Paula Cole [of Dawson's Creek Theme fame] hits and holds 1min 30 secs in. WOW !! She is awesome.
Same here The absolute beauty of the song, including the world influences, it's a wonderful song. There are newer versions that are also beautiful, with other world singers.
Yes, Peter always worked with top notch musicians. Tony is part of the live lineup since, forever. To quote wikipedia: "Tony Levin has performed on every Gabriel studio album and every live tour except for Scratch My Back (2010), the soundtracks Passion (1989) and Long Walk Home (2002), and the New Blood Tour." So he's essentially a fix part of the "band" behind Peter's solo career.
@@Bunny99s I saw the Roxy show in Hollywood on Peter's first tour and, of course, Tony was there, along with Robert Fripp (as Dusty Rhodes), Larry Fast and other fabulous musicians. It opened with a slow version of "Here Comes The Flood" where Fripp introduces himself with a screaming guitar lick unlike I ever heard before or after. It bled into "On The Air", which had not yet been released on the second album. I was fortunate, because it was broadcast on radio and I was able to get a bootleg album of it. I still listen to that opening medley in my rotation. What an incredible show of musical history!
Never have I seen more positive, smiling, earnest, loving faces than every single performer on this stage, in this exquisite piece of art. It never gets old.
Shed many tears listening to this tune. Both of my children used it for their wedding's first dance. A girl and a boy, 10 years apart. Tears of joy, indeed.
Love Peter Gabriel dearly but his range is not incredible. Incredible vocal range would be Dimash or if that doesn't count then that guy who sang "She's Gone" (Steelheart). Gabriel's range is good but not incredible. Incredible would be at the 4 octave range. Gabriel would be less than 3. Falsetto doesn't count. Mixed voice does. Freddie Mercury comes to mind as a baritenor. PG is a baritone.
Anyone else think Peter Gabriel sounds like two people singing at the same time? His voice is so unique and I can’t figure out how that’s even possible to sound that way, at least to my ears!
He has harmonics in his tone. The distortion sounds like 2 tones blended perfectly. My daughter also has harmonics in her tone. It's pretty rare. Throat singing is done by tongue positions and manipulating the vocal folds.
@@scotsman1471 like all the best vocalists his voice has built in harmonics, I'm sure I saw an interview where he said he ate chocolate before he sang to enhance the harmonics
I was lucky enough to catch a show on this tour. Paula forgot the words to "Don't Give Up" mid-song, and Peter had to help her out. The crowd, to their credit, was very supportive of this as-yet-unknown artist and cheered her loudly when she picked up the song again. Loved the whole performance!
Peter Gabriel is a musical genius, let's just take that as read. I think what makes this clip stand out, above and beyond the glorious music, is the way it comes across as a group of enormously talented people having a huge amount of joyful fun, in a very collaborative way. It's not actually all that easy to pick Peter out as being in any way 'in charge', or the 'boss', even though it's his show and his name attached. It's just an expression of pure joy.

That I have been able to attend every single one of his concerts since his first solo tour in 1977 is one of the greatest gifts of my life! Thank you so much for your reaction!
Over 30 years later, and when I hear this song, I still have to stop and sing along. When Peter Gabriel sings, or Phil Collins, it's always been comfortably within my vocal range. It's a lot more rare these days.

It's hard not to become emotional, they bring so many things to bare, and these aren't just any musicians, they're the cream of the crop on planet earth. They're all the best of the best of the best in musicianship, and the artistry of the man himself, a true legend. Perfection.
My hero. I grew up listening to Gabriel, I still do and will forever. He's the greatest musician in the world. No ego, just a people's musician. This was one of the greatest live performances you're ever likely to see. Thank you.
From 13:55 the subtitles say: [music]. That’s the best lyrics. I’ve been familiar to this video from the year it was published. I always liked that the stage was in the middle of the venue and every musician and singer was celebrated.
You're by far my favourite "reaction channel", there's zero pretend or exaggeration. And I love how you let the music just take you on a ride even if it means saying nothing for a few minutes. Your facial expressions fill in the blanks so naturally. And as someone who easily gets moved by music, it's nice to see a "hardened professional" isn't safe from it either lol. As a layman your insights on technique and how the singer's choices fit into a song are also really interesting
These simple (spontaneous) dance moves convey the joy of being there - in the moment - so much more than any slick, professional choreography. There is a childlike innocence to it. I guess that's why it reaches our emotions, while watching...
I was fortunate enough to have seen Peter Gabriel on this particular tour and it was the best overall concert experience I ever had. A magnicent band including the great Tony Levin on bass and Manu Katché on drums. The presentation was wonderful. And Paula Cole deserves special praise as she only got 1 or 2 rehearsals before she did this. This album got me thru one of the hardest time of my life in particular 'Don't Give Up'. I would love to see your reaction to that one or perhaps 'Blood of Eden'. All the songs are great and Peter has such great texture to his voice that he can create such a wonderful diversity of emotions on the listener.
I saw Peter Gabriel in September 2023 in Vancouver and this song was a highlight amongst a concert full of highlights. His voice was spot on and the musicianship of the ensemble was incredible..... and this is coming from someone that has seen Iron Maiden 9 times and usually goes to metal concerts.
As I recall from an interview back when this came out, Peter was inspired by Senegalese music (which is why he had Youssou N'Dour sing on it), and he wrote this song in their tradition of a song being able to be interpreted as a love song or a spiritual.
Peter Gabriel is a creative genius. An overused word but so appropriate with this man. He can be so dramatic, but also simple and spiritual. He creates a joyous celebration. Definitely do more Gabriel. This early work with Genesis is amazing and avant-garde, while his album released last year shows his skill and sensitivity. In his 70s, Peter's voice is still strong and even more rich.
Haven't watched yet - but, I have a feeling you're gonna DIG THIS ONE!! LOVE ME some PETER GABRIEL!!! SO MANY DIVERSE, COOL SONGS!! UNIQUE VOCALS!!! SO GOOD!! Love his albums: SO & OVO - SO UNIQUE!!! ENJOY!!!
I have been fortunate to see Peter Gabriel 3 times. The Greek in Los Angeles, the LA sports arena and Oakland arena. All were amazing but open air at the Greek was spectacular!
The violinist is L. Shankar, who played on the legendary Shakti albums w/ John Mclaughlin in the mid 70's. Really great player, I never realized this before.
The video of this concert won a Grammy. Its definitely deserved! Paula Cole had joined the tour just a few days before this was filmed. She was Peter's pick to replace Sinead Oconnor who had been performing but had to leave suddenly. There are a few songs from this video where Paula is co-lead with Peter, particularly "Come Talk to Me" and "Don't Give Up" which had been performed by Kate Bush for the album version. Paula and Peter together are just phenomenal, especially when the song focuses on their voices and the emotions that are being conveyed through them.
Peter Gabriel brings me right back to my late teenage years. Every single time I hear him, it's like a flashback in time for me. I don't hear him often, but it doesn't matter. Thanks Bethany.
That was so great to watch your reaction. Thus, you have to review THE BLOOD OF EDEN from the same live performance. Peter Gabriel is an absolute genious and a great humanitarian. He was very much involved in the support of the anti Apartheid movevement in South Africa. Paula Cole is a revelation on this tour, with a super voice to boot. Three decades later, and it is still the greatest performance for me.
This entire show is well worth the watch! His/their presentation is outstanding. Everything that Peter is done with a vision in his head. Paula Cole's vocals are outstanding. IMO, bringing her on board after Sineads departure was a step up!
Thanks for such a lovely reaction to the ultimate performance of Peter’s love letter. The joy and beauty in this performance is unmatched and THANK YOU for starting our weekend off on such a positive note ❤
I see this and I think, this is people together, united, unified, for a common purpose. Even if it’s only for a live concert performance, people are bonded by it. What the world needs so much right now.
I saw someone comment once saying this wasn't a concert, it was a spiritual experience - and you really get that feeling from watching these videos from it.
Bethany, you are one of the reasons why as a 64-year-old, lifelong musician. I’m finally getting serious about my voice and studying with a local jazz vocalist. ❤ your channel and commentary.
Saw him live back in 1986 on the "So" tour, but that was before he started with the whole world music stuff, so there was just more like a "normal" band of 6 people or whatever on stage and not the big party that we see here. Was still awsome 😍😍I'm also just a big fan of the old Genesis stuff with Peter.
Seeing this always brings tears to my eyes. I saw this live in Denver during Peter's tour. I was with a very good friend who sadly took his own life about 8 years ago. Brings back a lot of memories. Such a wonderfully staged concert.
Just, well I say Just, but a joyus celebration of the human spirit!!! 'We are all one, we are all the same, under our different skin colours ' we all have the same hopes and fears, music from this concert reafirms my belief in the integral goodness of humanity!! Sorry but I've just had a Spliff and feeling the love!!....
I absolutely cannot get enough of this performance. I love hearing Paps Wemba. He was a legion (RIP). Years ago when I was living in Nairobi, Wemba's and his old group, Zaiko Langa Langa, sold out the National Stadium three nights in a row.
I saw this live. To this day, it is still the most amazing concert I have ever been to. I am so glad they filmed it so I can watch it over and over again over the years. It never gets old.
I used to play this concert all the time when I worked at a video rental store. Great from start to finish. And so, so glad you highlighted Paula Cole’s phenomenal voice! She has so many beautiful songs on her own (and continues to put out great music) and Gabriel did a song with her (Hush, Hush, Hush) on one of her earlier albums.
I see the doorway to a thousand churches! I really don’t have the words to describe how that line makes me feel but tears come to my eyes every time I hear it. Incredible
Peter Gabriel is an exceptional musician, composer, arranger, singer, artists. Beginning with Genesis and moving onto his solo career, he's been nothing short of a genius for decades. There are few like him. Regarding this concert (1993 Modena, Italy), it is one of the most enlivening, connecting, spiritually moving concerts you'll ever experience. It's cathartic buzz is off the charts. His ability to connect to the audience via the performers connecting is magical and moving. Yes, solid-flowing tears are a common response. Love it.
I've watched this performance many times and it never fails to move me. How much would you give to have been there? Everyone on stage must have felt like they were part of something very special.
The secret world DVD is a gem. This song, Dig in the dirt, Come talk to me , San Jacinto and many more are all amazing performances. A little credit goes to Robert Lepage for his stage production and visuals, Robert is famous for his many contributions to Le Cirque du Soleil.
The entire Secret World concert (of which, this is an out-take) is worthy of your time, if you care to see it. I loved your comments on the professionalism on stage. When I'm telling someone bout this show, I end up focusing on the happiness that blazes from the stage. It's very special. (I have multiple friends who were fortunate enough to see this tour and they have all assured me that my impression was valid and the audience had a marvellous time).
It was a lovely watch, thank you for this reaction. Peter has such an incredible voice and the things he can do with it are just amazing. If you want to listen to more of his vocal talent, you should check out at least a couple of the songs he sung while he was in Genesis. One is Supper’s Ready, and the other one The Musical Box. He makes a show of his huge vocal skills in both. There are also many songs you would love from his solo career, as his voice changes so much from song to song and it’s always brilliant, but I think you really need to listen to those two because he was also very young when they recorded them, so you will be able to see what his voice was like at the tender age of 22-23.
The performance of Red Rain from this video is possibly the greatest live performance of a song I have ever watched. Peter, vocally. And the entire band of musicians, collectively, get as close to perfection as I have ever seen/heard.
The song responsible for one of the most iconic movie moments in cinema history, as John Cussak holds up the Ghetto Blaster to serenade his girl in the 80's movie 'Say Anything'. One of the many high points of Peter's 'So' album, and a life memory for so many people.
Gabriel has such an amazing body of work as a writer, vocalist, and performance artist... his most recent releases are every bit as incredible and current as his pop hit legacy material. Thanks for profiling him and giving your take and reaction to his vocals.
Would you use the term “stage fluidity” to describe what you saw on this? Second time watching you as you explore. You are perhaps the most transparent, disarming presence on UA-cam today. You engage us as if EACH ONE of us are your friend from WAY back, and as if you want us to see all of your genuineness and emotion as you listen. I felt like Peter made the performance about ALL of them on stage, and as he closed the song, in YOUR eyes, as he motions to signify as if in the eyes of all of his fans. Heartwarming for sure! I wish I had been given the opportunity to study vocals under your tutorage because if I had, I might never had lost the joy I once had to sing. Living vicariously now through others, and I am most grateful to you for what you bring to us! 🎉
The drumming on this song, and album, by Manu Katche, is stunning. A master class in itself.
It's like he's hearing a different frequency of the song. He hears all the subdivisions that us commoners don't hear. Always enjoyed his work.
His voice and phrasing on the instrument are all his own. He kind of has an accent on kit as he does with his speaking voice!
A lot of complex syncopation but he never loses the beat.
Yeah man he is an amazing drummer, This performane is absolutely gorgeous by everyone involved.
Manu is a beast. Love that guy

Other than Red Rocks, the Greek is my favorite venue. A summer night's concert at the Greek is truly the best of L.A.
We went to see Peter Gabriel in concert last October. He was so great and this song stood out.
Papa Wemba! What a beautiful and unique voice he has.
I am glad to share this world with Peter Gabriel.
*"Solsbury Hill"* would be another awesome choice.😊
Red Rain
One of my favs, along with Biko
And from this concert as well!
I can't lie, this is a video, when I watch it, it brings tears, due to the beauty of it.
Saw this show 30 years ago. Best concert ever. The wonderful Paula Cole ❤. You should listen to some of her solo stuff.
one of the most joyous songs ever written and performed, almost a religious experience
I've always found Peter Gabriel's singing and music so, so fascinating. Such an incredible talent
I absolutely cannot get enough of this performance. I love hearing Paps Wemba. He was a legion (RIP). Years ago when I was living in Nairobi, Wemba's and his old group, Zaiko Langa Langa, sold out the National Stadium three nights in a row.
God, do I wish I had gone to this concert. Everything they did was magical.
Those are my exact sentiments. Can't believed I missed that tour. Did the next best thing and got the Secret World Tour DVD.
Peter Gabriel has one of the most beautiful and very unique voices ever recorded! You could spot him one in a million! ❤
This is my all time favorite song. It means so much to me, glad you finally go hear.
Love it.
I've seen this concert tens of times and still don't understand how you can jump and sing at the same time 😁
By the way the drums are insane!
This performance was truly a gift to the world~
The performance of Red Rain from this video is possibly the greatest live performance of a song I have ever watched. Peter, vocally. And the entire band of musicians, collectively, get as close to perfection as I have ever seen/heard.

I melted with that contrast of his voice gravel then her clarity of voice. so typical a kind of magic in his songs.
What a band too with David Rhodes, Tony Levin and Manu Katche and more - sheer brilliance!
There is just a pure joy to this performance in every aspect and in every performer which is why it is so so powerful
"The Chamber of 32 Doors" live from the Genesis boxed set. Love that performance! Just so much feeling and emotion. Peter from his early days.
Emotion is always popping up with this song. Your ❤ being touched
