This is like a religious experience. Men, women, black, white singing and dancing. This song is from the movie “say anything”. Great live performance. Goosebumps every time
Welcome to world of Peter Gabriel. He has championed world music for decades and delivers mesmerizing performances the incorporate instrumentation and voices from all over the globe. The guy is one of the real ARTISTS of the last 40+ years.
I saw Peter on this tour and it was one of the best concerts I have ever attended and I have been going to concerts since the mid 60's. Absolutely stellar band including Tony Levin and Manu Katche. Paula Cole I believe had one rehearsal before she had to perform.
Maddy you are so right that this is a song for the world. This live performance is the absolute best ever that I have seen. Peter and his great ensemble of musicians knew this exact performance was going to be special. Incredible that with all the dancing, hopping and movements, Peter not once missed a note or breath. This is the epitome of perfection on an epic scale of proportions.
After this tour, people started noticing the amazing voice of Paula Cole. She got a record contract and one of the songs on her first album was chosen as the theme song of 90's TV show Dawson's Creek
You know you've made it when Samuel L Jackson sings your lyrics during a video sketch at an MTV movie awards broadcast. I've not seen nor thought of that moment since it aired decades ago and never watched Dawsons, but this comment triggered that memory of Sam crawling out of a window. singing "I don't wanna wait". Look it up! 😀
@@fabricegothmog3178 You are absolutely right. And mind you...I live in Côte d'Ivoire! We agree: his finesse is inalienably African. Cheers, here's to an incredible musician!
The whole Secret World concert was incredible. Peter and musicians Tony Levin, David Rhodes and Manu Katche from that video are still playing together, we saw them last year in Birmingham, UK.
the 80"s was so great. Music was just fun. From movies to music everything was made to just entertain. A much more simple time. I feel privileged to have been a teen during this era
Tell me you're privileged without telling me you're privileged! xD... Yeah, 80's was wonderful! You're totally not wearing rose-tinted nostalgia glasses! Racism, homophobia, transphobia, misogyny totally didn't exist in the 80s! We all had equal rights and it was a total paradise!
You should see the whole concert of that Secret World Tour, it’s one of the best EVER, so creative, with so many cool technical resources, BUT focused on making the musicians to be the center point, and the begging, for the theme Come Talk to Me is AMAZING. Of course also the drum solo from Manu Katche, one of the best drummers in history and the iconic Tony Levin, the hole life bassist for Peter Gabriel’s solo career, but also the bassist of one of the most important progressive bands: King Crimson.
One of the greatest performances on YT. I sometimes watch/listen to this when I feel a little down. The girl is Paula Cole, known for her hit single "I don't want to wait"
9:10 - yup. This seems like a really magical performance to have been at... such a wonderful collaboration with everyone. (The studio version is good, too, but yeah, there's just something magical about this, at least to me.)
This song is also center piece in an Iconic 80s movie, a teen romantic, yet dramatic film , featuring a young John Cusack, and Iona Skye...it's up there with The John Hughes films. Ask any of us 80s teens that were there! ❤
This is a love song. ❤I had the studio version of this song in the seating music for my wedding. (1991) So love how much fun they are all having in this live version.
Peter himself said that he wanted this song to be open for interpretation and that it could be a religious song or a love song. So it's not specifically about Jesus, but rather about the love everyone's carrying inside of them, regardless of it being the love of a god or a love for a partner or just the love from human to human. So it's basically just about love. What that love is, that's up to you.
The instrument you asked about is loosely based off a Djoba, a Central African instrument used like a stringed instrument. The earlier versions were used with animal strings and gourds. Would love for you to react to Skillet, a Christian band, singing Awake and Alive.
Paula Cole as his backup singer (a last-minute replacement for Sinead O'Connor, no less). Tony Levin on bass. An all-star world-music ensemble supporting him. He's a complete class act.

How did I miss your reaction of this video from 2 weeks ago? I'm glad I I noticed it finally. Nice. shout out to the person that you mentioned that requested it for you. Very classic. I am sorry for missing this reaction until now.
Great vibes. Gabriel is spiritual, but not religious. Though he doesn't hesitate to use religious symbols and themes in his compositions, so you may be correct. But I think it is more general about elevating our spirit. It could also be about a special love in his life. Regardless, joyous vibrations. Peter Gabriel worked hard to bring 'world music' to the West. Very selfless and still performing.
I would advise you watch this whole (Secret World) concert. I loved it so much, I bought the DVD. The opening song ("Come Talk to Me") and "Secret World" is really cool with the stage props.

One of the most beautiful live performances ever, simply stirring. Yes, Peter stated in an article that was indeed about faith in God & how we are loved through His eyes.
I like your comment that it looked like he had the United Nations on stage. After Genesis split up and he and Phil Collins went separate ways, his first album--which featured Kate Bush as backup singer for this song I'm about to mention, by the by--featgured a great song called "Games without Frontiers," a play on words of Doctors Without Borders, though based on the European gameshow "Jeux Sans Frontieres" that pitted teams from different towns in separate countries against each other, and featured the chorus words, "War without Tears." He has done work with Amnesty International, and as his career progressed, like David Byrne of the Talking Heads he worked increasingly with artists from the Third World, including UN Children Education Fund (UNICEF)'s celebrity ambassador Youssou N'Dour. "In Your Eyes" is my favorite film of his, though, which featured prominently in the Cameron Crowe's coming-of-age teen romance film with John Cusack, "Say Anything."
"Is that a petticoat?" petticoat - A light woman's undergarment worn under a dress or skirt, and hanging either from the shoulders or from the waist; a kind of slip, worn to make the skirt fuller, or for extra warmth. Yes, There are rumors that the American actress and film director Rosanna Arquette inspired the song. It’s said that Gabriel wrote it while he and Arquette were romantically involved.
