Here's my experience:I bought a 2 head kit day one and went through with the pre-order. When i built it, using the original firmware and the. 6mm nozzles, i was experiencing a loud, stringy core xy printer with adhesion issues compared to my previous Cartesians and core XYs.
I switched to. 4mm nozzles and had a great reduction in stringing and not much speed reduction. I updated the firmware and had improved speed. I built an enclosure and eliminated adhesion issues. I updated the firmware,prusa slicer, and added brushes for the nozzle to pass through as the heads dock, and stringing went away completely. I upgraded to 5 heads and have had nothing but reliable prints no matter how many heads are in use.
I installed the Alpha firmware that just dropped (6.0.0a) and the noise(vibration) reduction is incredible!
As you say we all have different uses for the printer, and tolerances for how much tweaking we are willing to do. I personally love this printer and it keeps getting better and better. Im very excited for Prusa beginning to use the sensors in the head for proper tuning to remove artifacts and vibration, as well as the hinted things like having the pressure sensor noticing when filament is no longer being pushed or the head has a partial clog.
Thanks for sharing your experiences so that users with your mindset know what what they may experience. I just wanted to say that lots of the problems people reported have been or are being eliminated through firmware updates, and small (mostly printed) hardware updates. I hope you find a way to make yours into the dream machine that mine has become! Keep sharing!

I bought a 5 toolhead kit and assembled it myself and it works perfectly. It arrived about a month ago and is currently printing a PETG & TPU project using all 5 heads. 4 colors & 2 materials. I have had issues with other brands of printers that are supposed to be "semi-assembled", not unlike the XL kit. I have had screws come loose and even fall out after a few hours run time, I don't want to name brands. I have been a mechanic for 50 years fixing everything from lawnmowers to logging trucks. Prusa seems to me to be one of the better factories in my limited experience. the people assembling the printers DON'T tighten the bolts & screws properly and things are loose. in a precision device like your XL ... loose is trouble, that will cause random faults very much like what you have described. My suggestion is to go through every nut, bolt & screw even if you have to disassemble the printer to some degree. There is a standard joke about the Auto Industry that you don't want to buy a car made on a Monday morning or a Friday afternoon. Monday you get the hungover workers that can't think straight and Friday they want get off and go to the bar. Cars that are described as lemons are usually built at those times.

Had mine for about 3 weeks now. It's been working great, none of the issues people have been complaining about. No stringing issues, no z banding. My only complaint is that it's loud. But that's being addressed and Alpha 6.00 firmware is out with fixes for that.
I just think this is not a beginner printer. Using PLA for supports on PETG is game changing. I've been able to print stuff not previously possible, and the supported sections are flawless.

Fantastic review after a lot of use. I really want to try the 5 head option and only went with the single head. Mine prints pretty reliably amazing but it sounds like there are still some kinks to work out with the multi heads

I went ahead and finalized my order for the 5-toolhead printer. For me, this is the only printer currently shipping that I think has a good multi-material story. I can’t abide the waste and slowness of the Bambu AMS. I did give it some serious thought, though, because I’ve seen the issues that you’ve had, and that some other YTers have highlighted. But I’ve also seen recent videos that suggest that the changes Prusa has been making are improving things significantly.
I ordered my XL so late that I think it will still be several months before my printer ships, and I’m sort of banking on Prusa continuing to refine things during that time. For me, this is a hobby item, so I don’t have the pressure of trying to fill orders and produce acceptable product for sale. I ordered the partially-assembled printer, so we’ll see how that goes. I watched a video of a couple of guys assembling one and it looked pretty reasonable.

I really appreciate you filling the void when Prusa decided to not send out review units on release. I see multi-toolhead printers as a new generation of 3D-printers, just like the i3 once was. This first release from Prusa in the segment is very pioneering and a brave bet with many new features and technologies. As should be expected, it is not flawless. There were warning signs that we would be here at this point: A huge number of new features for a Prusa machine, the first mass-produced multi-toolhead machine, a long pre-order time, the repeated delays, the decision to not make review units available at release. All in all, many signs that this is a first-version in a new generation which means it will not be 100% what's expected. But the potential for multi-toolhead printing looks like a real game-changer. I'm not sure at what stage I buy a machine in this generation, but I'm super grateful for this channel keeping it honest!
You're very right. It's a completely different type of printer than anything out and than anything Prusa has done before. When it works for me, it's amazing. When it fails, it's hard to figure out what went wrong. But I do want to see where it ends up. Thanks!
I have a 2 tool head XL and it's assembled by me but I honestly haven't had any issues with stringing or toolhead crashes... The only problem I really had was layer shifting but it was pretty easily adjusted by belt tension.

I purchased a two tool head Prusa XL that I have now upgraded to a 5 tool heads. The Prusa XL is a much different animal than a printer with an AMS. It is targeted at the use of multiple materials in prints. An AMS is great for multiple colors of the same material. They are different tools for different jobs. Any tool can be a hammer but it will not do the job as well as a hammer. If you just want multiple colors and you are not worried about data security, go with a Bambu. If you need the benefit of multi material printing or are worried about data security, buy a Prusa.
I disagree. It's a multi-toolhead printer and you should be able to use it for both multi-material or multi color printing. I don't see that it can't be both. It's not sold that way. Obviously Prusa underscores the multi-material to show that it's more than a 'simple' multi material printer. But this machine should be a much more effective multi-color machine than my Bambu X1C, in the sense that I have to wait for 1.5minutes between color changes and have a lot of waste (which is normal for that type of multi-color capability). The XL should be able to do multi color easily. I had a 5 toolhead in pre-order since day 1, but I cancelled since I was very disapointed in a)the delays and b)the first reviews of the XL. Even with all the time they took with testing etc, they still delivered a machine with lots of issues. I know that every 3D printer has it's own issues, but from a company like Prusa, with their reputation, it's nearly intolerable. I don't have a Bambu since the introduction, but I don't believe the X1C had that many issues from the start. And that's a startup company that never produced a 3D printer before.... So I think I can truly be disapointed in Prusa. Until recently, I still had the XL somewhere on my list. I still had hope that it would improve and maybe I'd buy one after all, when the issues are resolved. But I don't think it's going to happen. When I saw the video where Tadaa tried to print the pug, I was shocked to see that it was just impossible to finish that print. Wasting kilos for filament. I'd set my printer on fire if it was mine and I paid that amount of money.
Belivee me when I say that my heart cries for Prusa, since I have the feeling that the likes of Bambu have hit them hard and I really like Joe Prusa for his mentality, his entrepeneurship and what he has done for the community, but times are changing and they're not changing fast enough. I hope they'll come back with a real innovative machine that works because they should be able to do that. What Bambu has done is not magic, it's not something they invented; they just cleverly put together the right components.
@PhilippensTube My XL still has some smaller issues but e.g. the massive stringing is gone since the IS firmware. Sure, the Bamboo seems to be quite polished, but the time and waste in multi color printing would keep me from buying it for regular use of multi color and for me multi color works quite well in the XL. But it is very expensive, took way too long and still had too many bugs/missing features. I think it is the right choice for some but most people will be better of with something else, be it a P1S, Voron or K1C, just to name a few, it all depends on the individual use case and preferences.
@@PhilippensTube It isn't that it can't be. It is just not what it was designed for. If your intended use is multi-color, buy a Bamboo with an AMS for much less money.
I wish Prusa had launched these printers differently. If they had started with a single toolhead for those that wanted to size, I think they would've polished it a lot more at that point. I know they release the single toolheads first. But they all launched together.
I know that using my XL for mainly multicolor is kind of overkill. I figured I wanted the size and I wanted multicolor, so 1 machine can fit multiple needs.
The XL still is more time and waste efficient than my Bambus. But my Bambus are easier to use. So I just make the best call for each print. Thanks!
@@tada3dprinting I think that they did themselves a disservice by having a single tool head version. There are much better printers for much less money if what people wanted was a single tool head, large build area core x/y machine. They should have touted the multi -material capabilities from day one. I do not think that the software was ready when the hardware launched.

I have to update my comment: I got my PRUSA XL a few weeks ago and have nothing but trouble with it. I was not able to get 1 clean multi color PETG print out of it for 4 weeks now. The device will now be sent back to Prusa for a internal check/repair. The last weeks have been a terrible experience with the PRUSA XL 5 Head. I did not have these problems with my Bambu X1 Carbon, which worked out of the box.
I have just left the 3rd XL for now. I am frustrated that after $7k neither machine works as well as I expected. But I wasn't around for the first eave of Mk3s. All my minis were great and maybe I got spoiled. Prusas are good machines. But these XLs seem to be more touchy than I wanted. But firmware keeps coming out. We will see. Thanks so much!
Hi Tada, I updated my comment. I am not able to get a clean print ouf of my new XL 5 head which I received in May 2024. Hence you are not the only one with these problems. Mine was fully assembled like yours. Every bolt in the printer is fasten, I factory reset it, new firmeware, fully calibrated it after I adjusted the belt tensions with a professional device. Still: No clean prints with PETG multi material.
you are absolutely correct I came to the same conclusions after few months spending over 4k and not having camera or sensors for failed prints doesn't make sense thanks for sharing
Yeah prusa is really lacking on this department in comparison to bambu lab. For a 2024 printer of this price not having notifications on your phone, is really bad.
And maybe it's possible you get some notifications with prusalink or prusaconnect but I wouldn't think they would be on my phone like the Bambu is. And of course the first thing you do when you get a notification is check your camera.

@@tada3dprinting Following up on my previous comment. My semi-assembled 5T XL arrived and I assembled it. I did have to print a calibration tower (available on Prusa's support pages) to adjust the XY drive belt tension and eliminate some minor layer shifting. The Prusa app for plucking the belt did not work well for me.
Color printing: After that, I did a series of test prints and all of them printed as good as or better than my MK3S. I did print several 5 color objects but nothing that was more then 100 mm tall. However, I had virtually no stringing or zits of the wrong color dumped on the print. Tuning the position/angle of the nozzle blockers in the docks likely is a big source of blob control. I'm extremely impressed with my results so far with 5 color print quality.
1st layer and bed adhesion: I started with the powder-coated sheet and actually was having issues of too much bed grip with PLA and PETG! Conversely I had the typical corner lifts when printing PLA on the textured sheet; this is similar to my experience on the MK3S. The textured sheet worked great with PETG prints. I tried the smooth sheet with PLA and it worked great, even more grip that my MK3S. I've had 30 hour single color prints complete with no layer shifts and no bed adhesion issues.
I'm in the process of upgrading my XL to support high temperature printing. I've replaced all of the PETG plastic on the toolheads with PC Blend Carbon Fiber versions. I ordered the PC-CF prints on Etsy from nigguARTh's store. His print quality was absolutely top-notch if you don't want to print the parts yourself (or have trouble trying to find PC-CF in stock). I also replaced all the stock brass 0.4mm nozzles with hardened steel 0.4 mm nozzles. I also printed all of the parts for the Sumo XL enclosure and am working to finish building the enclosure. With these upgrades I should be able to print PC and ASA without warping.
So far I've not had any detached prints and only minor corner lifts for mismatched bed types to filament types. Generally I'm getting very high adhession, even after the part has cooled to room temperature. Nearly all of my printing has been with the Input Shaper enabled; It has not caused me any issues in terms of print artifacts or print failures. Last week I installed the 6.0.0 firmware and the printer is MUCH quieter while running Input Shaper. The 5.x firmware was very loud and annoying to be in the same room. Now, the cooling fans are the loudest source of noise other than when toolheads dock/undock.
I want to start experimenting with multi-material printing, especially embedding TPU in my prints.
Overall, I'm very happy with the purchase. I do wish that there was at least an option to order the XL with PC-CF direct from Prusa. I'm also happy I waited to complete my pre-order until the early kinks were worked out. I'm looking forward to many years of solid printing just like I've gotten from my MK3S (upgraded to MK3S+).

Print without the input shaper and most of the problems go away. I've had several of the same issues. This one change has changed my printer's reliability.

Thanks for the update. Now I am even more satisfied with my cancellation almost a year ago of the XL pre-order and getting an Mk4 instead. Regarding the failure of taller and multicolored prints: the succes chance multiplies for each layers and color. So even if the success chance is 0.999 per layer/color, a tall and multcolor print will result in a low yield.

I have cancelled my order. I have consumed many videos to see if it would be a good fit for me and so far I believe I made the right call. While I have the technical capability I am done fiddling with printers and need to focus on my projects.
The XL is in a class by itself...the big issue is there is no direct competition in a retail product so first adopters will just be content with the potential rather than the reality of it being a struggle to fine tune.
It's hard to be critical of a brand you like but loyalty goes both ways. Prusa is a huge company so I have little doubt they can make the XL's potential shine but for moment it is a niche device with a huge learning curve.
I'm curious, what printer did you purchase or are you looking to purchase instead?
I've been slightly disappointed with my 2 tool XL, it hasn't had any major issue but I feel like it severely lacks features for it's price.
I have the XL with single head , however I have no issue with it at all , perfect print . Depends on the material you are using too
I agree with you that it lacks a lot of nice to have features for the price but I don’t agree with it having a huge learning curve. What part of the XL has a huge learning curve? If you have a kit fair enough building it is hard but otherwise afterwards in my experience it just works 😅
@@MrBaritonefreak There were a few that caught my eye initially. Ankermake m5 with the now cancelled V6 color engine, Prusa XL, Bambu Lab X1C with AMS.
All of the other types require fiddling, ERCF(DIY), Palette or mmu2/3
Timing worked out better for Bambu this round. There are more QOL features that at I actually use now that makes it difficult to select printers that lack them.
I am not loyal to any one brand as I need them as tools not street cred but Bambu has been fine for the last 18 months and 4500hrs later. I am still looking for other machines though.
@@wafflecart Again it's not that I cannot build, tweak or tune it, it just becomes another project. I have been following 3dprint dogs/tada/makers muse/ 3dprint nerd, uncle jesse, and countless others and it seems , not quite finished...it that makes sense.
YGK3D printed many multicolor/material items 6 were unique and decent, 2 semi ok quality, and 4 fails. The fails were the multi-material parts. TPU specifically.
The main learning curve is which filaments can/cant bond. the prime tower failing due to those dissimilar filaments(pla/petg), beta firmware which may or may not fix these issues and working around their quirks.
I don't doubt your experience as those who have great prints should certainly show them off. It's just the bigger channels are not having the same success and the "it just works" seems relegated to the mk3/mk4.

This is absolutely correct, I have same experience. My 2 head XL never had a "perfect first layer". I have a too close wavy pattern, and 3-4 cm away it's already too far and separated lines. This was introduced that it can print on a log. Whole printer is very rattly, especially the front part. I already checked all the screws, no improvement. I don't think that I should tinker for months on a 2.5k EUR printer...
When it’s probing the bed is your nozzle clean and not oozing? Any filament and dirty nozzle will affect the probing.
Have you contacted support? I haven’t had one first layer that isn’t perfect in at least 35 prints on my partly assembled 2 head XL.
That's annoying! Most of my first layers have been amazing, some good, very few bad. I would ask support. But if it's like my experience, it's suggestions on what to try. I don't want to try things, I want to fix things! Was yours a semi or fully-assembled?
I will probably build a 5 tool voron. A guy in india already has it working. Faster than xl and will cost maybe 2 k. Trident and 2.4 can now be modded
@@tada3dprinting mine is semi, but seems the heated bed is misaligned and today will arrive the replacement. I have other issues (ie the nozzle seal screw wasn't properly installed, so it crossed the square bolt, now I can't change the hight of it). I have an extremely bad surface if I print at the front of the printer. really annoying :/

Thanks for sharing your experience. You have helped me decide to wait for another year or so to see if Prusa can mature the XL and it becomes a machine that is more workhorse and less of a burden. I want it to help me complete projects not to be the project itself.

It definitely is a very interesting machine, but it doesn’t make much sense to compare it to the BL X1 or similar machines like many youtubers and comments do, of course it is better in some aspects but it's in a completely different price bracket than those machines.
At the end of the day it doesn’t matter how good this machine is or could be, most people won’t even consider it when looking for a new printer because of the high price, and even having the money to spend it probably would make more sense to get 3 X1Cs for the price of the XL. It’s only under very specific circumstances that the XL would really make sense (other than going with the influencer hype).
It’s just a matter of time for BL to launch a new machine that kills this one as they did with the A1 Mini to the Prusa Mini…
Prusa is between a rock and a hard place right now, they’ll never be able to match the price of the BL machines, even if they make good and reliable machines, they’ll always beat them in that aspect. And even worse is not that BL are only cheap, they’re also extremely capable and almost (if not equally) as reliable as Prusa’s.
And it’s even worse because they lagged behind for several years, only getting into high gear again after panicking when the X1C came out and blew the industry away.
It might be too late now to get ahead of the competition, only time will tell. If anything it’s good for everyone that they’re finally are trying to catch up, competition is great for the market.

I agree, my Bambu printer is awesome. I never have to worry about anything and I've made so many multicolor prints so quickly. I was just hoping to find a printer that could do so without so much waste. I think I'll wait until Bambu comes out with something like this with multiple tool heads.
I’m seriously considering an XL with 5 print heads.
I have a Mosaic Palette 3 Pro attached to a Prusa MK3+, using the Canvas slicer supplied with the Palette. This system has been challenging to setup and print successfully. It’s working well now.
I have learned that multi-color/multi-media printers and printing are challenging.
It’s very important to understand that Multi-color/multi-media printers and printing have many more variables than mono-color printers.
My decision about purchasing a XL-5 is to wait about one year. Why?
All newly released complex technology based products will require refinement. There is no way around this. Early adopters must realize that this is true, and expect a learning curve by the company and the user.
Prusa supplies very good technical support, Mosaic Palette is good but not great. Both products are very well engineered and manufactured by companies in Europe and Canada. Their quality reflects this. I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase additional products from them.

When I look at the printer and it is operating I am so excited and are equally nervous if the print is going to be successful.

I find your conclusion in line with mine, for me multicolor is a novelty better solved by printing different parts or painting. I am looking for printing supports and multi material. The huge volume is nice when it is needed but that will not be often.
Yes, I thought I would use it more. But even filling the bed with smaller prints makes me a little nervous. It pulls its weight but isn't what I hoped for. Thanks!
The fact that you're being so "nice" about the XL's is a testament to you. For the money and all of the problems that you and other people who've reviewed and used the XL on UA-cam, I'd be incredibly mad at the time and money involved.

I still intend to buy one, but your experience and others have put this into the 6 to 12 month timeframe now, and I think I would not get more than 2 heads to start with. The large build plate is still valuable and would be the main reason for me to get it, noted your challenges with tall prints - I'm still rocking my Prusa 3 MKII from 2017 and it's been great, I still trust and support the company, this was an ambitious printer from the get go, I believe they will get there with it and will deliver what you rightly expect from such a pricey machine.
Thank you for documenting all your trials, errors and successes, and thank you and others for going first - my early adopter days are long behind me, last time I jumped in both feet first was the dual head plywood MakerBot Replicator, it's interesting how far ahead of it's time that was, I think with inflation, it wasn't much less than the XL is today.
I didn't have this much trouble with my Day 1 Mini order. But I think this XL is just a lot more complicated. My Prusas were my first good printers that helped me grow my business. I think this XL will get there. And it's pulling it weight for now too. Thanks!

@@tada3dprinting its the fact your not giving a black or white answer that makes me think theres more to the story then meets the eye. all your answers are in the grey area where they could construed either way. on one hand u say its good but you also say its bad not a straight foward answer. BUT i understand that as a reviewer you need to stay neutral but I also want an honest straight forward answer! I'm very new to 3d printing and for me my p1s has more then surpassed my expectations BUT here in canada that prusa is like over 7k and I feel a x1c can do a far better job for alot less
I have a 5 toolhead model shipped stock with 0.4 mm nozzle. I had none of the issues you had with your 5 toolhead model. Maybe they fixed some issues already. I am also not going to buy a second one yet. I wait for major improvements. Yes I am happy with the XL but actually I would love a wider one with even more toolheads.
Seems to be hit and miss. My 5t is the most problematic printer I've ever used. IMO Prusa shouldve delayed it until it was worthy of their "it just works" reputation. My wife made a vinyl sticker for our XL that says "it just WONT work." Lol

Thank you for your honest opinion. I’m fairly new to 3D printing and I’m not advanced enough to be a tinkerer…yet. Looking for something that just works at this point that does multi color, so I’ll stick with the X1C. I think in a year or two when they work out all the kinks, this will be a good large format printer.

You know, I really agree with you. I've had a 2 tool head XL for a while now. It's not the easiest of printers to live with, but for what I use it for it's the only solution. I use it for big functional/mechanical things. I use the 0.6 nozzle, and where I don't care so much about print quality, and size if everything. I only ever print one colour (so only ever use one print head at a time). The two heads are just for the convenience of printing different filaments between models (one for PLA, one for PETG). For this use-case it works for me, but being honest with myself I would not buy another, in fact although I do really love my MK4, I don't know if I would buy another Prusa. We'll see what the future brings, but I think Prusa have taken a hit with the XL, and they might have lost a large number of their "early adopter" user base.
btw, this has not made me a Prusa hater by any means, but I think if spending another $1000+ on a printer, there are better printers out there.

I hate to agree with you on this one, because Prusa really has done amazing things for 3D printing in general, but I gotta agree with you on this one.
They're doing something new. They're doing something innovative. And in the past that's been enough to have the 3D printing community come in and help them file off the rough edges.
But the 3D printing community has shifted. People are less willing to put up with half baked in a box and help them finish it. We want something that, first and foremost, works. We've seen it's possible, so why not just do that.
Only, again, they're not doing that. They're doing something that worked 10 years ago and something that, if developed properly, could change the world. That's praise worthy. I just don't want to be the one to help them iron out the kinks, I want to make 3D prints.
I completely agree. It used to be a good process to come up with a good idea and let the community fine-tune what they wanted. And Prusa did amazing things with that process. But things have shifted.
Eventho I have a youtube channel focused on 3D Printing, I don't want to spend all my time tinkering. I want to spend my time building a business with the things I can make with the printer. Thank you!
I followed your journey with the XL nearly since you postet the first video of it to shorten the time till mine arrived and felt with you on the issues and failed prints. Thanks for sharing that!
Now that mine arrived and me and my 5T XL got to know each other a little bit, I really like it a lot. It came with 0.4 nozzles and my experiences with PLA and PETG where superb. I had stringing with TPU and this was because of wet filament mostly. So drying all (also new) spools for at least 12h and storing them at below 10% humidity is key from my point of view. I had to learn this over and over again.
Other then that I‘m looking forward to the software updates to get even more out of this great hardware basis.

Just a few months ago I would never have second guessed buying a Prusa. I am upgrading from a Prusa mini+ that has never failed me, but I wanted a bigger size. I don't mind having to troubleshoot a printer, but not at the cost that Prusa is asking for the XL.
Really big bummer because the XL seemed like what I wanted. I might try and hold out to see what's coming later this year or grab a K1 Max when they go for 300 ish.

I have 2 prusa MK4s and plan on buying two more for my Etsy shop. They are bigger than the mini so maybe they are an option?
@@IvanJoel I saw the MK4 but I wanted to go to a big print volume like 300x300x300 or bigger since most items I print fit well on my mini+. I wanted the XL specifically for the multi-material but if that isn't smooth yet then I'd settle for something with a big print volume so I could experiment with large format printing.

My experience from my 5-tool head has been great. I paid a lot of attention when calibrating the tool holders during the build of my kit. I think this would be the solution to some of the problems that you describe. Since you bought an assembled one, this should of course already have been done.

I think this is 100% a fair review! The key is what you are printing and if this is the only one that can do this. I have had mine a month now and my experience has had much less struggle than you, but its not perfect (mainly mixing materials like PLA & PETG support). For you, the time saving isnt huge but requires some manual work, but in the end thats all you need!
For me the multi material is important, and creators like Robert Cowan are helping with that. The XL really is a printer that if you need the specific requirements of a tool changer, its the only show in town. If you just need mutli color, its faster and more efficient on waste, but there are other players so you need to compare your options.
I still think there are some actual issues with yours as my multi color PLA prints have been flawless, with no crashing or any of the horror stories I have seen from you. For $4000 those issues should be resolved immediately by Prusa, and if they arent helping then thats the biggest issue of all. Hopefully with some software changes it continues to improve, but no one should buy based on a promise, you buy what is in front of you.
I have to agree, my dual head XL which ive had about a month, seems to have had the kinks worked out. Ive had it running almost non stop, and its working great. So far, Im using it for the increased speeds and build volume compared to my MK3s and ive been very pleased with it. My biggest gripe right now is how damn loud it is! I get some really bad resonance on some specific parts I print and sell a ton of, (so a major thing I want to print on here) and its so loud I can hear it in the basement when Im on the main level of my home...
Thanks so much! Yeah I was hoping to use the MultiMaterial feature more for supports than anything. And that also hasn't really worked out how I expected. So using this for only MultiColor is kind of overkill. But definitely nothing out there this size.

Yeah I think your analysis is really fair. Seamless, reliable, efficient multi-material printing is what the XL was suppose to be. But then again, Prusa has never been turn key solution. My mk3s works well enough, but still needs tinkering that I don't need to do with my X1C. So I think Prusas are good tinkerer's machines, simple enough for anyone to jump in and really learn about how 3d printers work, and start tinkering with it. And yeah, for a printer of this price, it leaves a lot to be desired. I preordered the 5 head machine on launch day, but I have still not completed it because it just doesn't feel quite there yet. Will it get there and justify the price before either Prusa or someone else comes out with something better? Hard to say.

100% high-end printer (price) but needs babysitting all the time like a low cost printer does. Your use case for multi colour prints was exactly what they told use to expect. Even with all the delays Prusa drop the ball and is refusing to update hardware to address the issues. Prusa saying then don't need nozzle wipe brush but does or new units shipping with 0.4mm nozzle but will not send 0.4 to early unit owners for free or the single bot holding the toolheads in place when it should be 2. We can only hope we get a XL+ version and we can then pay for some upgraded parts to get the high-end printer that we paid for.

I have not converted my pre-order in a real one as I had a bad gut feeling about it. I am still open to the idea of buying one, but I want to have a fully developed and fine-tuned product instead of actively working on making it that way.

Definitely a good video. I have gotten most of my XL issues solved, but I absolutely agree that for $4,000, this printer should just work flawlessly out of the box. Especially when they explicitly market it as having a "perfect first layer" which as we all know is definitely not true.

OctoPrint has some amazing features. Canceling a failed object in a multiple object print is one of them.
I don't lose a whole print job because one part failed.

Honestly getting OctoPrint up and running on my Ender 3 was pretty easy, and I did it in an unconventional way.
ooof as someone who as been watching from the beginning it is sad to see. Here was my take to my Friends and people who asked me.
It is official at this point. The prusa XL is a do not recommended. First layers are still super flaky. I spent 3 hours tuning the printer to get it to lay a first layer that stuck. This was my first time printing with input shaping and fast speed at .2 mm height. There are still lots of stuff that has not been tuned yet. The good thing about starting 6 months late is that user have started to fix most of the problems.
Currently waiting for a new heater block because mine died randomly.
My first layers are pretty good. What nozzle size do you have? That's annoying about the heater block! Yeah the XL is just more work than previous Prusas. Thanks!

Fascinating how different our experiences have been. My XL-5T was a pain to assemble and calibrate, but it’s been printing wonderfully since. I’ve never had a crash or tool swap failure. True multi-tool (as opposed to a filament changer) has been a real delight for both multi-color and multi-material because I don’t have to worry about material and time waste during purging, or cross-contamination within the hot end.
One thing the docs don’t mention is redoing the tool offset calibration after nozzle swaps-that’s absolutely necessary but the Prusa guide skips it. The way the tool head holders mount is also sketchy, and if that’s not stiff I could imagine problems.
Bambu Labs X1C prints multiple filaments and it's easy to reduce waste.
Plus it just works, it tells you about any issue.
They have also opened up there X1C to use 3rd party open source.
Until Peoplely have finalized there units for any serious 3D printer you are getting $100`000 tech in a 2K machine that runs on fully open source.
Prusa hasn't evolved with the competition and its obvious.
The MK4 was a disaster from the beginning and the price with no camera is pathetic, added a input shaper while there are much better cheaper options available .
@@Fraser_Noble I’m well aware of how filament changers work; I have one. I didn’t want another. I wanted a tool changing printer, which is why I bought the XL. The point of my post was that my printer just works, too. Runs beautifully and the prints look stellar.

Well... You're not the one who has issues with a printer. I had to spend more money to get the X1C after the Bambulab A1 suffered a recall of the heatbed cable. Now, I spent money for a printer that it's collecting dust because my cable is damaged. Greetings from Spain.

Wow , your review is down right honest and very pertinent. And you are right about flow detection. The printer can detect filament breakage, but not of it is actually flowing.

We also have two of those. The first one was an assembled "kit" and that works flawlessly since day 1. No issues at all.
I just finished building our second (semi assembled) one and that one ha some issues. The first issue was with the wifi antenna connector, that did not want to click in place and I had to fix this by taking the board out and repair this. The second issue I had was the bowden tube in the filament sensor not staying in there for one extruder. As I discovered that little plastic clip had one leg bent out. During startup, the printer always hangs in "connect ESP" - something that goes away when I reset. The only real issue left is that it almost always gives a "crash detected" error just before it starts printing (the head move too fast, looses steps and starts homing again). Unfortunately that also happened once) during two days of printing mid-print, leaving a blob on the printed part.
I am confident that I will get this solved with the help of Prusa Support and this will surely not stop me from buying another one for personal use.

@@tada3dprintingto be honest, I did not understand why there were a lot of the 3D printer channels complaining about problems with the XL. But during the assembly of our 2nd printer, I found a lot of tips (i.e. how to mount the tool posts) that were not in the original manual but, being an engineer myself, were quite logical to me.
Something like an Ender 3 is easy to assemble, even without a manual. But with the XL I forced myself to read and follow each step in the manual meticulously.
I am slowly learning how to use my 5 head XL. I'm fortunate that this is my hobby and not a business like you. I have seen how Prusa is making improvements to the software and expect them to continue to do so. I try to keep my multicolor prints down to as few changes as possible and have been getting good results. Most of my prints are maker coins and KC Chiefs arrow heads with less than 10 filament changes.

Great video as usual. I was always intrigued in the XL and I do think that having separate hotends for each filament is a really good idea, but honestly it is way too expensive for hobbyists. I also think that rushing the printer out before 100% ready has not helped their reputation. You don't spend all that money to hopefully one day to work after countless firmware updates..

I finalized my pre-order last week and received a shipping notification less than 12 hours later. I placed my pre-order 11 months ago and was shocked that it has already shipped because I was not expecting it for another 3 months. I think there have been a lot of cancellations for the pre-orders because people were hoping the bugs would be fixed by now, but they are not. I am seeing more negative videos than positive. If Bambu Lab would’ve had an XL size, I definitely would’ve canceled my pre-order and gone with them (and this is not my 1st Prusa). It is very irresponsible for Prusa to sell a printer without an enclosure available. My friend, with no 3-D printing experience, bought a Bambu Lab X1-Carbon last year. He is producing perfect prints out of the box. For a printer that comes with an enclosure, LED lighting and camera, laying this kind of money down on the Prusa does not make sense.
I think Prusa is finally getting caught up on the XLs. And I do see a lot of improvement. But I agree it needs some fun features to compete. Thanks so much!
Sad to hear I hope you get your existing ones sorted somehow. I’ve had a great experience with my single tool head kit and more recently my 5T kit. But I got them much later than you and I think all the kinks have been ironed out software wise at least.

I have just completed my order for a 5 head machine, I think that it should be with me very shortly as I pre-ordered in April 23. I'm not sure that the XL will ever be as simple to use and reliable as a mk3, for example, as it is a much more complex machine and larger prints bring with them their own complexities and you are bound to need different settings than smaller prints. I was recently getting warping problems with a full-bed sized, flat, PLA print on my mk4 & I gradually reduced cooling fan until, in the end I discovered that it was better with the fan turned off completely, this is with PLA in 25 degrees C ambient. If you have a smaller part, with lots of small details, however, you need 100% fan with PLA to maintain the definition of the details; just one example of things that you need to learn when things get more advanced. Did you ever get a smooth PEI sheet? I think that the lack of a smooth sheet with PLA was/is probably most of the reason for you bed adhesion issues.
Yes I agree the XL is just more complicated. That makes sense about adjusting the cooling fan. I do have the PEI sheet. Planning to use it soon on some larger prints.

I remember the first filament sensor on the MK3 was basically an optical mouse that sensed if the filament stopped moving. But it did not work with some dark filaments, and it was replaced with a magnetic contact in the MK3S.
While this solution is more reliable at detecting filament runout. It cannot detect clogs.
That filament sensor was terrible, I permanently disabled it haha.
And actually my filament sensor on my single toolhead XL has been so faulty I have turned it off. I don't know what the solution is. I would think maybe another sensor right before the hotend? Maybe a combination of both? Thanks!
I don’t regret cancelling my November 2021 pre-order. Prusa took too long to release and still doesn’t have an enclosure solution, practically useless for large high temp filaments. Hopefully Bambu comes out with an XL version of their X1C. I bought a K1 Max in the meantime, which has been working ok for the most part.

I find it odd that most brands are moving forward towards the plug and play units that just work and Prusa seems to be taking a step backwards to the days of the old Enders where the community had to fix the bugs. (And still costing as much as a decent used vehicle)😂

I had similar issues already: print head falling off once, filament not extruding after change although nozzle was not glocked ...
Mini and mk4 work way more stable.
Petg works best for me so far.

Thank you for an honest review, I’m just a hobbyist and have been looking at creality k1c and Bambo x1c and this, probably I will take a one filament version, as long as I can print good prints with petg, abs, etc..

If you are looking for multi material, its hard to find a better offer than the XL. If you are just there for multi- color then there are other options.

I appreciate the honesty of your XL videos. Too many Prusa product reviewers are apologists for these alpha and beta level products. Prusa XLs journey with you has been Creality level. The XL is not worth the price commanded at this time. I'm embarrassed for the reputation that Prusa once held.

Great video.. I love my MK4 but always wanted to do multi color stuff. After seeing your videos I decided to wait with this.. my MK4 is so reliable so i don’t yet feel like turning it into a XL or MMU science project. If you ever ordered the mmu for the mk4 please also test that out and let us know.
I ordered the MMU3 for the MK3 which I already have and the MK4 which hasn't arrived yet. I don't like my MMU3 for my MK3. It's constantly needing me to refeed filament, slow and takes up too much space. I am limited on space and have put it in storage for now. I'm hoping the MK4 option is better. I'm leaning towards just using the same MMU3 on the MK4 if that ends up being possible. Mostly because I don't want to take the time to build another one. But I don't want to tinker, just print. I see some people liking their MMU3s. I'll definitely post about the process. Thanks!
Prusa announced at the beginning of the XL campaign, that they would use the load cell to detect clogged nozzles, missing filament and tipped over parts. So i still hope that it is in the pipeline. It seems to be a complicated problem to detect all these issues with the load cell data, maybe they just want to get it perfect...

@@tada3dprinting In the video, you mention multi-color miniatures that are difficult to print in one piece, and if I understand correctly, are easier to print in separate pieces that are assembled afterwards. Would you mind giving an example file? Just curious to explore this with my XL.
I understand your issues with the XL. I have one 5 toolhead XL and a Bambu P1S. I have had issues with the XL when upgrading from 2 to 5 toolheads: one toolhead took about 10 times before it succeeded the dock calibration test. But now all heads work flawless. You have to get the docks exactly right when fastening them and they have to be fastened with enough force, but not too much. Remember, this printer is a novelty and it needs some iterations - for one to improve that kind of issues where you are not sure if it is assembled properly . I do not use a prime tower anymore, I just disable it in Prusa slicer. A built-in camera would be nice, I am thinking about adapting one of the printed front parts to be able to fit a camera there. With this said I am very happy with my printers and have had much use for the XL for large prints and fast multi color prints. It is about 7 times faster than the P1S with a four color print.
@langph Just curious. I just got my XL 5T and was having issues with the Dock Calibration. Was your issue with a message indicating you had an issue with the Belts? From what I can tell my belts are fine and printing has been perfect. Only issue was dock calibration.

Ok, 1 suggestion - don't put your printer right next to an air conditioning duct/heater duct... Those drafts off the duct will cause uneven cooling of your print and cause it to fall off the print bed...

Almost two years after my launch day preorder, I cancelled my XL preorder after the announcement of the Mk4. I figured if they weren’t going to prioritize those willing to drop over $3K on their printer, then everything I heard about Prusa was BS. Decided to take the money I was gonna spend on a 5 head XL and buy 4 Bamabu Lab X1cs. Sure it cost a bit more, especially setting up a dedicated network for the printers, but well worth it after watching all the XL reviews and updates. Zero regrets. That XL would have been my first Prusa, but they screwed that up. Now they’ve lost all the $$ they would have received from my business.

I have two girls that help me part time and we just had a conversation about this and why. We all like the Bambu Carbons the most. I have 3 X1Carbons. 1 has AMS. These Carbons are the first that we get going every day. They're just fun and easy to print with. Not what I was expecting. 🤷♀️ But all 3 of us feel the same way. Thanks!
You have been exceptionally patient with your issues. These are not cheap printers. At this price point, you expect perfection, and I do as well. Prusa will make good on this eventually, but i think it will be the MK2 before we see what this machine can really do.
I gave up waiting for them to ship and ended up building a voron 2.4 350. By no means has that been trouble free either!!! But today I have a highly reliable printer, but single toolhead :-(.

I have the one head XL kit ordered day one. It has been good, though at the moment it has a problem with the frame mounted filament sensor that needs to be fixed. I have ordered the second head upgrade kit but those are not shipping quite yet. I want to get more experience with it before I go for more heads, if I even do. Most things that I do would be handled by two heads - either two-color prints, or separate support material. In the meantime I have built a couple of Vorons with Klipper and they are very good though a larger investment in time. The little Voron 0.2 is extremely quick and useful and the Trident 250 is an excellent midsize machine. The other printer type I would like to try is a two head Idex style machine. They provide two heads without the issues of tool changing so should be a lot faster and less troublesome. Hopefully there will be a good LDO kit of the Voron Tridex at some point when they get the details worked out. The next thing for me will probably be the LDO Milo 1.5 CNC Mill which will allow some new capabilities with acrylic, delrin, wood, PVC and aluminum subtractive machining. And of course the MK3 and MK4 are still chugging along. I need to decide about upgrading the MK3 but it works so well as is with Octoprint on a Pi Zero 2 providing network access and camera support.
I would've figured the 2nd tool upgrade would be first! I don't know that I have the patience for building a Voron. I didn't even really have the patience for my fully assembled final steps. A CNC Mill would be really cool. I would say if your MK3 is working, let it work. What do you make?
@@tada3dprinting The XL second toolhead upgrade kit arrived today! So I do need to get that filament sensor working so the upgrade can be installed. I upgraded the firmware recently and it won't pass diagnostics without that filament sensor, and it won't print until it can pass diagnostics.
I make some custom designed amateur radio accessories that were previous to having 3d printing. Recently I've used 3d printing to enhance both the product as well as making tools and jigs to support manufacturing. The CNC mill could really help out there. I have a few other upgrades and new products still in development. The other tool that would be useful is a CO2 laser, but the CNC may be able to do most of what is needed there (and a lot more) and we're running out of tool space. :)
Yes, the Voron is a project. The LDO kits do help a lot, but there is more to learn and tinker with than the Prusa. So not a project for everyone and not optimal for most businesses. But for printing the more technical materials the Prusas don't quite have the capability. I will use that in some of my projects. The Prusa prints PETG fine which is an improvement over PLA but I need ABS and ASA which require an enclosed chamber and the Voron does that easily. I like the open source and rich set of customizations available from the Voron community.

@@tada3dprinting Thanks for your content. My XL Update - The new left side filament sensor fixed the XL. Once Prusa decided that was the problem a new one arrived in the same week. Yesterday I installed the two tool upgrade, and changed the original nozzle to 0.4mm as suggested (the newly supplied toolhead nozzle was already 0.4mm). I converted two of my designs to use two tool color printing. I printed both in PETG with default settings (with current firmware and Prusaslicer) and they printed fine. They didn't need a lot of filament changes (just some surface text) and there was essentially no stringing. I was expecting a battle but so far no issues. I did notice the instructions didn't really say much about adjusting the anti-drip seals, but I spent some time and made sure they were adjusted properly to be effective. Next I'll have to convert more designs to multi-tool and consider whether more toolheads would benefit my processes.
I originally did the preorder. Then I purchased the Bambu p1p plus ams (I know they aren’t the same machine and i know that the ams is not true multimaterial) after watching videos on yt and reading reddit, i decided to cancel my xl order and purchased and x1c. At this point i still am in need for a larger printer but don’t want to spend xl $

With regards to the tool crashing, can you give more detail? I had issues with my docks when I first got my printer because the docks were not installed correctly (by me). If there is ANY play in the docks at all, you will get failures. It took some doing on my printer to get all the docks 100% squared away. In my video on upgrading from 2TH to 5TH I show what I went through to get them 100% solid. Prusa should consider a redesign of the docks as they seem to require everything to be 100% perfect.
I agree the dock mounting with a single bolt is bad. I think they need at least 2 and an alignment pin would be great

I also had issues with it not properly docking but that was more understandable. The slow crash I still have not figured out. Thanks!
Ok, I watched the other video. The reason your tool fell off is because the printer went ALL the way to the right and it pushed the 2 tabs against the plastic housing for the belt pushing them partially towards the left. That released the tool. Then when it was having docking issues trying to pick up tool #5, the tabs were all the way to the right. They should be centered to pick up a tool. They should be all the way to the right to lock the tool in place.
BTW: The XL does get lost ever now and again (as was shown in your other video). I've found the best course of action is to just reset the printer. Which unfortunately kills the print.

Thank you for your honest review. First I love my Prusa printers. I am a fan boy i admit. I have others also but anything I sell goes on the Prusa's the others I use for prototyping or stuff I give away. I also have 2 MMU2s units so I have some experience with multi color printing. You realy have to crank up your purge volumns to get clean prints. I though the tool changing concept would reduce waste and allow for a better multimaterial printing experience. The MMU2s not so great at multimaterial. It seems most of the reviews are 50/50 and less than enthusiatic at times. So I decided after this review to wait and just keep my preorder as is. I will still get one in the furture but waiting a little longer is not a bad thing. It's nice to be in on the leading edge and not on the bleeding edge. I'v been there so often in my professional career and been orphaned, waiting is ok. Keep up the great content, always enjoy watching.

Great review of your experience with the XL. My employer intends to purchase several larger sized printers, my hesitant initial recommendation would have been the XL but I just don't think it's justifiable now. Personally I love my Voron 2.4 but it's only 300x300 and it was quite an enjoyable but time-consuming build. I really can't see anything in the 500x500 range that would be a similar experience to what we've had with all of the Prusa MK3s that we use. We have Gigabot and Essentium printers too but neither has been the workhorse we need.
Yeah I haven't tried any of those other style printers. My single TH has been pretty good. I just still have some z banding. And the filament sensor on it was terrible. Thanks!
Thanks for your honest opinion. After owning an e3d tool changer it was clear early on to me that it was a specialist machine. If im honest ive never actually used the multi colour capability to its full advantage. But with the BambuLab x1c i frequently print multi colour even though there is more waste, its just easier.
I originally ordered the Prusa XL with 5 tool heads but ended up cancelling after coming to this realisation. I think I made the right decision as I dont think the XL offers value for money. The opposite really, its been plagued by issues and to me it doesnt seem like a good quality machine. Especially when I compare it to my e3d tool changer which is better quality and was half the price.

I find it strange but understandable the reviews all are in the line of "It may be me". Counteless experienced UA-camrs all have similar issues. This unit right now is a hot mess and Prusa needs to own that. I understand the captured nature of "reviewers" but it is what it is...just cause its has Prusa orange on it does not mean it doesnt deserve a kick to the curb until they figure it out. They in all honesty should halt sales until these issues are fixed. They should just tell everyone they are sold out, Prusa customers will be used to that.
I'm really curious what the ratio of happy and unhappy XL users is. I just wish it was easy to diagnose the problems. Thanks!
I have not had to tune my 5-head (with 0.4mm nozzles) at all beyond the initial calibration and have had minimal stringing (apart from one particular filament, which was clearly not just plain PLA) and no issues with docking or tool changing. However...how the docks are attached seriously needs improvement, I was never 100% certain they were fully seated, and I suspect they may need adjustment over time, and I have had some glitchiness with the firmware, like a toolhead undocking but staying at the back of the machine for filament loading, and a couple times the machine has spontaneously decided to unload a filament I just finished loading. The latter is the most worrying...it's been working, but I haven't trusted it to do any really long prints yet, considering some of the glitches other people have seen.

@@tada3dprintingStill on 5.1.2, waiting for 6.0.0's full release before upgrading. I haven't had *many* glitches, it's just concerning after some of the other things people have had. At least I haven't had the machine bashing toolheads into each other or destroying completed prints.
For the price it should come with everything, they r making a killing on these, RIP Prusa if things dont change................
Yea I don't think a Prusa XL should cost more than 3x as much as a Bambu Lab X1C with AMS. The price is insane, then I've heard even the "fully" assembled printer takes over an hour to assemble.

Bambu Labs changed the game, with it's working right out of the box solution. I patiently waited 18 months for my invite to buy and in the meantime Bamboo Labs had been out for a year, I decided then not to purchase my pre-ordered Prusa XL - I was tired of tweaking and assembly. To be honest I have yet to purchase another FDM printer and currently await a Bambu XL.
Bambu Labs changed a lot of things for me too. I ended up ordering an X1C while I waited for my XL. And although the filament and time waste is more than my XL, the X1C gives me very little problems. And all the fun little things like printing from your phone, getting notifications on the phone, integrated camera. It makes it hard to compete!
I would really love to see a Bambu XL. But I am a little nervous how much filament waste it will create. We will see! Thanks!
No camera no enclosure no heated chamber are all strange decisions IMHO. I feel like they should have a more complete package to them considering the price point. I have no doubt that once finely tuned it can be a great unit but the lack of features from this price range is perplexing.

I like to tinker, but if I'm buying a printer to tinker with I would not buy an XL I would go for a Voron tapchanger, I may acctually do that later in this year...

The Prusa XL is a machine for experienced engineers. The head changing system needs perfect setup and maintenance. The printer has too many options for the average user with different types of material.
