The whole video I was like… “is he gonna play the riff?” 😂 The v30 is classic, and both sound pretty similar on cleans. But, that D77 is super mid forward and punchy with high gain. It is voiced in a way that it sounds louder and cuts more. This test has me thinking about putting a couple DV77s in my Mesa cab to go with the v30s.
Haha I totally wasn’t going to play it and then was like nah, I’m gonna do it! 😂 I was going to use my Mesa cab for this as I put a 77 in it but with that room being small I’d be hearing all 4 speakers. Once I can isolate it and do it I’d love to make that happen!
I agree! I feel like the 77 blended just adds that low/mid range and makes the 30 sound just a bit fuller! Really fun one to do and I definitely enjoy hearing them together! Thanks Steve O!
More than anything the mic placement on that cab is great. On both side below the Label with SM 57 I get (What I perceive) as the most accurate and best sounding high gain tone.
Both sound great. To my ear, the Vintage 30 sounded more scooped, the 77 sounded more middy. It's almost like Mick Thomson designed his speaker to sit in the pocket, to accentuate his leads. I'd like to hear the 77 beside a Swamp Thang and a Texas Heat.
He did a great job designing the 77. It really is fantastic. I’ll make the Swamp Thang and Texas Heat comparisons happen. Those speakers are on my list to get by year end!
@@tyrannosaurusriffs I feel like the Omega VM12-65 is what the DV77 was meant to be paired with since it was engineered by the same people but I haven't found that pairing on UA-cam yet strangely.
I have a Mesa vertical 2x12 with v30s, wanted to swap out one v30 for a dv77, would you recommend swapping top or bottom position to place the dv77? (Strictly for metal, metal and more metal) Thanks!
Oooh that's a good question. I would think for you maybe put it on top since it is not as bright as the V30 and will be a hair easier to hear. This is all just a thought and opinion though! That's how I'd do it!
Thanks for the recommendations! I think I'm going to have to get a handful of different Eminence speakers. I've very curious on many of them. I'll add those to my list! Thanks for checking out the video!
Both sound great but I can hear a "ssshhhhhhhhhhh" white noise kinda sound really bad on the DV-77 much more than the V30. This is a common phenomenon when cabinets are mic'd up though which isn't so apparent "in the room" and I've recently learned that adding a low pass filter removes most of that annoyance when recording for videos and such :D I assume you didn't add one on this video?
I picked up on that as well. Maybe I should have thrown that filter on there. I did leave the noodling parts unprocessed in any way to give a more "what to expect" kind of thing.
@@jaychen2000metal I 100% agree with that after doing a bunch of my own testing! I’m a bit obsessed with trying to get a bunch of speakers and cabs to see if I can find a favorite!
They would sound great in a 412 X pattern. I like the V30 sound better on the cleans.. by a little.. however in a mix the DV would probably sound better. I would probably use the V30 with a modern high gain amp to tame it and the DV77 on a vintage amp to boost it and get best of both worlds.. I fear the DV77 with an amp like a line6 or peavey XXX would have too much mid push.. but with a less aggressive amp it sounds sorta more towards a 5150+ direction of speaker response
An X pattern for sure would be great! I do agree, I like the V30 a bit more for cleans. Having them both just opens up a lot of options with different amps! Thank you!
Hello friend from Great Russia! I'll tell you how I play without changing speakers in a Mesa 412 cabinet: I like to play old school death metal with two amps in one Mesa 412 cabinet. One in a pair of 4 ohms and the other amp in another pair of 4 ohms speakers. Versatility is beyond praise! And you don't need to change speakers. Just tune one amp fatter and the other drier and it will always be an unforgettable experience! I play on: mesa triple rectifier rev.G mod pot gain 1MΩ mesa mark IV rev.A 1991 Peavey Triple xxx. Great video. They both sound killer and the riffs were great.
This is the DV77 demo where I found it can match the clarity and agression of a vintage 30. I even preferred the loudness of the DV-77
Absolutely! I love both but lately I’ve been playing the 77 a bit more! V30 will always rule but it’s nice to change it up !
This was a sick video man! Loved the comparison!
Thanks dude! I started DI tracking Elmer's. I think I'm going to use this amp and speakers for that.

Do it. I've got 2 V30s and just recently added 2 DV77s to with them in an X pattern. Worth it 100%.
