In the old days . . each amp and cab has it's own merit . . .now we live with thousands of choices and yet . . . most guitar tone on many many modern metal artists are the same.
I don’t think MojoTone has anything to do with the Warehouse (WGS) speakers do they? @MojoTone should send Kyle some British V30s though so we can hear that comparison too. I think they similarly take off a little of the top end shrill that Celestion Vintage 30s have.
Yup, it's nuts. Most people have no idea. I use an impulse now because I'm in an apartment... I used to run 2 greenbacks and 2 v30s in an undersized 412. I got sooo much punch out of mesa heads it tripped my buddies out.
@@Professional.Bro.777 Same. If you have a high gain amp, it's pretty much going to sound close to another high gain amp if you use the same speakers. There ARE exceptions to that, but the speaker is the MAIN component of sound, and is the biggest influence on the sound you get!
I thought the same , that ENGL was killer and would easily cut through any mix. I'm going to sell two of my G12T75's and grab two V30's. I've heard here that mixing the two is good and use the "X" pattern for best results.
Glad more people are catching on about G12M Greenbacks for metal. They are NOT just for classic/hard rock like so many people seem to think. For me they have the perfect balance of upfront and balanced mids, with minimal high end sizzle like you find in most V30's, and still with respectable low end. Perfect for modern metal tones.
@maynardburger yeah I used to think v30s were the best speaker ever made until I heard some of the older and newer G12M speakers on UA-cam and I like how much tighter and focused they sound compared to the vintage 30. My favorite G12M type speaker is the Eminence Private Jack 8ohm. It's 50w and it sounds so perfectly balanced and nails the G12M character. Also Celestion is recently making the G12M speakers in the UK now.
They've been my personal favorite for about a decade now. I also tend to like the G12T-75 that most people seem to dislike. Vintage 30 is not my thing at all although the Engl sounded really good here. I used to have the 800 Watt Mesa/Boogie 4EB with EV Black Shadows. The ugliest sounding cab I've ever had. I also like the G12M-65 Creambacks and I've noticed that I tend to prefer the 4 x 12" base over the angled.
@@JoseyStranded Funny thing is, I don't like the g12t-75 speaker on its own, but it does sound really good blended with a Marshall g12 Vintage 30 speaker in a Marshall 4x12 cab. It reminds me of the 80's thrash metal tones. The g12m-65 is also really good to, but I still think the G12M 25W has a better tonal character overall and is the best greenback speaker and on par with the eminence private jack.
@@amirtak9886 I need to try blending the G12T-75 and Vintage 30. Thanks for the tip. But yeah that Greenback sounds great here. In some cases the Greenback 30 sounds better. Don't know why.
I pretty much have the powerchord mastered. All i need. Its nice to hear how the riff goes. I can do the odd little solo and stuff but the meat and potatoes is better imo.
The Marshall with K100 and later the Marshall with Greenbacks and then the old cab with G1275s were my top 3 here. They mostly all would work though. The immediate difference is crazy… but once you get halfway into it, you realize they’re all usable.
I use a DV-77 in a 1x12 closed back prs cab and love it. I also use an eminence swamp thing in a fender super sonic combo as a clean AF pedal platform and it also handles the low end amazing and takes the high end of the fender amp. Love this kind of video! Thanks for the info!
your engl v30 cab sounds insane. it'as always impressive to hear how big the differences are even between different v30s. the g12h30 marshall was my fav of the bunch
Kyle, you are doing such an amazing job and your channel is growing due to that. You're a great guy who seems humble, honest, and kind. I hope your channel continues to grow. Guys like you deserve a lot of success. Keep up the amazing work. I look forward to your every video.
Long time Greenback lover. Personal favorite is the Eminence Private Jack take on that particular speaker. Thanks for turning on the gas for a bunch of us.
The G12H is a really underrated speaker. Its been my favorite for years, and sounds great in this video. Also, a Greenback in a Marshall cab always sounds great. The Engl cab was pretty killer too
love mine. i actually owe it to mr. bull; his G12H30 70th anniv vs WGS reaper showdown vid was what motivated me to get one. although i think it sounds better for rock than metal.
That 8 Eminence P50E in the VHT 2x12 surprised me. I confirmed that I typically like 16ohm speakers better. The V30 is still one of my favorites. Also the DV-77 and a Creamback H. You also can’t go wrong with a Celestion Anniversary or a Greenback.
This mostly confirms what i thought. The WGS Retro 30 sits in between the 16ohm V30 and DV-77 here. I liked the CB-H and last Black Shadow too and Redback wasn't bad.
It was really cool hearing the ET-66 for metal. That’s the one genre I hadn’t heard them handle yet, and it’s the only one I wanted lol Thanks for doing the lords work as always Kyle! I think the Randall, greenbacks and the last eminence were my favorites.
G12H30 has been my favorite since I've owned an EVH 212. I cycled a lot of speakers through it and eventually came back to the pair of G12H's. Big low end and cutting mids.
People like to crap on those speakers in that cab by saying it's too trebly or spiky or whatever. I think it just takes a while for those speakers to break in but once they do, that cab sounds glorious.
I know it probably dumb to everyone but i find the fact you use your font from your logo in the speaker description really sick as branding goes, i really appreciate this and yes i run an advertising agency so im a nerd lol.
Marshall 1960a sounded nicest to my ear, followed by the randall and the H75 creamback KSR. Others would forsure find there place in certain mixes. But raw tones, those took it for me.
I produce/engineer/mix/master full time at my recording studio. People will come in with $2500 heads and $500 cabinets complaining about their tone. I plug them into any of my better cabinets (selected, of course, to compliment the head and the tone they're going for) and it sounds 1000 times better. Instantly. Now, pick the right speaker in the right cab to go along with the right character coming out of the amp head and you've gone from "this is shit" to "oh shit this rips." The thing that tends to bum them out, though, is when I pull out my Egnator Rebel 20 - a head a got for $150 used - and put it through the right cab (it loves my Mesa 2x12 from 2001) and it sounds better than their Revv (for example) through the cab they walked in with. That head's awesome and it's my secret "vocal mids" amp that always sounds cool. I think it's a painful lesson a lot of us guitar folk learn: amps are cool, fun to experiment with, and have a definite hand in shaping the character of the tone but cabs are where 90% of the tone is designed and defined. Amps are the fresh lookin' shoes while cabinets are the shirt, pants, hat, haircut, and body shape of the person wearing the shoes.
Just glad to see someone doing a demo on the two old school Mesa cabs - although the 2x12 sounded very thin (perhaps its just better in the room due to the ports?). The Redbacks and G12H Anniversaries sounded great too.
It would be cool to hear different speaker combinations, like a V30 with an Eminence Legend, mic both cabs with an sm57 with the same head. Also, it would be very helpful to hear this on a mix context, maybe make a track with drums and bass, record left and right guitars. Btw we acknowledge and appreciate the labor of love in this video!
I really dug that Marshall with the G12 H30 speakers and the KSR with the Redbacks.. of course I’m listening through an iPad speaker so there’s that. And you can never really tell unless the cab is in the room pushing air
If you stop to think about it, every one of us is hearing each of these speakers differently. So it's not only that each speaker is different, but we all hear things differently due to various factors. Just think about the different types/degrees of hearing damage that we probably each suffer from, to one degree or another. After over three decades of industrial work and a lifetime of loud music, I know I have hearing damage. Different frequencies have become attenuated. It's mind-blowing and one of the main reasons that we each prefer different tones.
If you played this to someone without context and blindfolded, they would be thinking its different amps, thats just how big of a difference different speakers and cabs can make, its crazy. Awesome video Kyle, would love to see this being a series of testing one amp with all these different cabs! Best for what I would enjoy personally: ENGL V30 8ohm, Mesa V30 8ohm, Marshall G12M25 Greenback 16ohm and Mesa Black Shadow MC-90 8ohm and
I find myself liking the K100, DV77, WGS Veteran 30, EV12L and the Black Shadow MC-90. Also, I liked the 8 Ohm speakers more frequently than the 16 Ohm ones, especially with the V30's, but they were in different cabs, so IDK how much of that was the speaker and how much was the cab, and then you throw in QC tolerances as a giant question mark...
Engl V30, KSR redbacks, 25W greenbacks sounded incredible. There was only a couple of speakers in the entire batch I didn't really like. Most of them sounded really good, just different flavors.
Great video. I'd have to choose the Eminence C90, the Veteran 30, H75 or one of the Greenback loaded Marshalls. The rest had some sort of weird resonant overtone/hollowness/brittle buzzy thing going on. I wonder if differences in power handling played a role in this? What was the master on your amp? Thanks for the hard work. Moving those cabs around is no joke.
I think this has been the most helpful demonstration of the nuances in tonality, not only between speakers of a different brand, but the same speakers at different independence. 16ohm somehow sounds deeper, fuller with a greater low end response than 8ohm. Shows me which direction I’m heading in now. Might have to try creamback and dv77 16ohm combination
Damn this must have been a mission hope your backs ok:) Randall and mode 4 cab are the best to my ears. Seems not many people use k100s they rock lucky i have the same cab
Ive got a dv77 and swamp thang. Both 16 ohm. Its a hella blend. Different wattages, so you get the dv77 nice and clear woth some dark muddy underpowered tones from the swamp thang. It really works.
I have a couple of 2x12's with DV-77's and they're awesome. One is mixed with an Eminence Governor and the other is mixed with a WGS Reaper HP. They're my favorite cabs by far.
I agree they're really nice, with my m65's I like to dial the presence up so it gets that crunch while still being pleasant on the ears. People saying they like the K100's with these amp settings have hearing loss!!! In fairness he's recording with the mic at the cone so that's why they're all quite bright but still
The G12H30 was my definitely my personal favorite. Smooth highs, powerful mids. Since this amp is already has a somewhat scooped tone it's pretty logical that a very mid-forward speaker plays well with it, and that somewhat mid-scooped speakers doesn't (like the T75). However, the G12C Greenback (should be mid-forward) didn't sound very good IMO, while the K100 (usually a bit scooped) did, so that logic might not work after all 😅
that vht 212 last one absolutely killed all of them... it was the most upfront fullest and far from buzzy, scratchy sounding. still it was not dark or super boomy in the lowend. what a cab!
Interesting comparison. The only way it could have been more fair, in my opinion, would have to been to try them all in the same cab. But good lord, the time you’d spend just doing the swaps alone would take a bit! Haha. Still, I really dig this!
I should have kicked you my old pimped out Fender 4x12 to test drive. Old G12H-100s on the bottom and vintage uk built Classic Lead 80's up top. It took me a few speaker swaps and experimenting, but that combo is by far my favorite mix of Celestions.
Wished there was a beloved orange v30 cab in the mix but incredible job with this shootout. Alot of those sounded so cool. I'm most interested in those DV-77's
The very first Randall can and the 2 KSR cabs the creamback and redback, then the marshall g12/m25 green back, mesa black shadow were the standouts for me. I realize this is poorly worded on my part. I was literally just adding to the list as I listened.
Just two hours ago I did my own shootout with my Fireball through my Mesa, Engl & Vader cabs. Engl won, Mesa came in close second, Vader last. Those older Engl cabs are no joke. So damn heavy though! 😆🤘😎
I keep listening to these comparisons over and over and that Redback grabs my attention every time. V30 is still the champ, i dont care how old it is or how many times its been used it just has that midrange ice pick punch without being unpleasant. I was gonna add a DV-77 to my mix but that Redback is calling me
A pertinent question: when you guys search for a cabinet IR do you just search for the one which sounds best or do you choose more specifically like "Now I want a Celestion V30 hereto combine with this amp I'm using" or an eminence or whatever brand? I'm asking this because I don't know how recognizable are the IRs out there. Sometimes I wonder that if a company just lable some IR "Celestion V30 " we all accept it without questioning because no one is going to be able to recognize if that is actually the V30's sound.
Great video! it´s really curious , i find the best combination V30+ EVM12L ( comparing all i have tested ) and barely anyone uses that combination and its extremely tight, clear and thick....I recommend you to try that speakers!
The Celestion G12C/12C25 or whatever they threw in the Marshall JVM cabs are the most slept on speaker of the last 50yrs (followed by Celetion 65 watts whether 80's or reissue... but not the mushy creambacks... and then say the Eminence Swamp Things that took like ten years to catch on even modestly). They have the greenback thing with more V30 style compression in the lows that changes the tone a good way very complimentary the 5150 type voicings out there where the consensus is blackbacks and v30s.
great comparison 👍all time m25 greenback fan here. İt is great in marshall cabs but fantastic in an Engl cab. İ swaped all v30s to m25s in my 2x12 and 4x12 engls.. eminence legend 1218 is also a hidden gem i think. İt is great alone and in combination with tonker.
im probably biased because i own them but i loved that Veteran 30 sound the best, the non mesa 8ohm v30 was pretty close though. i could see the k 100 mixing well with either of those.
Kinda surprised to see that you didn't run the PRS MT100 through your ENGL E412 XXL cabinet... I would've loved to have heard how much more punch and low end the oversized cabinet delivered.
This video should help show the point the Gleen has trying to make all along!!! That changing your speakers will make a difference in your tone/sound... Now to narrow down the choices to the couple I liked best......and it was mainly the one with speakers in it!!😂😂 I liked the Omega the most so far. Ill have to watch a few more times to determine the rest.
I had been falling out of love with my 5150 mk3 50w combo, until i replaced the eminence governor with the OG EVH speaker it came with, sounds so much better now, the eminence is slightly damaged with the center cone pushed in leaving it "dented" wondering how much that effected the tone becuz i loved the eminence gov thru the 50w 5150 head
The Redback was my favorite of the bunch, and I was also surprised by how much I liked the DV-77, Creamback 65 and the second Greenback speaker. And after hearing the EV12L, I can’t figure out why old school Boogie guys hype it up so much, it sounded really bad to me

KSR Creamback, KSR Redback, G12M Greenback, P50E all sounded absolutely killer. G12H was pretty good too.
Damn this must have been a mission hope your backs ok:) Randall and mode 4 cab are the best to my ears. Seems not many people use k100s they rock lucky i have the same cab
Celestion V30 and K100 is the best combo for metal I’ve ever heard. They compliment each other perfectly, I’ll never run anything else.
I really like how you give us the non post processed “how it’s gonna sound in your house” demo.
Not exactly... Microphone filtering sound
Loved the sound of the Vader with Legends.
Lotta love for the P50e, but my guy you need to try a Fane F70. Such a killer speaker. Steve Fryette knows whats up.
Very interesting. Id like to see how the new 6505 ii cab Sheffield speakers stack up against all these
The Mesa Black Shadow vintage sounded awesome 😃
The thing i like about the creamback 65 is that it doesn't violate your ear holes.
I agree they're really nice, with my m65's I like to dial the presence up so it gets that crunch while still being pleasant on the ears. People saying they like the K100's with these amp settings have hearing loss!!! In fairness he's recording with the mic at the cone so that's why they're all quite bright but still
@@phantomflame0658 I'm a dark tone connoisseur
The G12H30 was my definitely my personal favorite. Smooth highs, powerful mids. Since this amp is already has a somewhat scooped tone it's pretty logical that a very mid-forward speaker plays well with it, and that somewhat mid-scooped speakers doesn't (like the T75). However, the G12C Greenback (should be mid-forward) didn't sound very good IMO, while the K100 (usually a bit scooped) did, so that logic might not work after all 😅
*_1: Engl 8 Ohm V30_*
*_2: Marshall MF400 8 Ohm K100_*
*_3: Marshall 1960a 8 Ohm H30 Anniversary_*
6:12 didn't expect it but the Marshall with K100 speakers is my favorite, sounds huge.
that vht 212 last one absolutely killed all of them... it was the most upfront fullest and far from buzzy, scratchy sounding. still it was not dark or super boomy in the lowend.
I liked the 16ohm V30, redback, Veteran, both creambacks. G12H30 has nice EQ but also a sort of fuzzy decay that I wish wasn’t there.
I was gonna add a DV-77 to my mix but that Redback is calling me
G12H30 and K100s are my favourite. The Engl V30 and the ET65 sound great too.
I would be happy with any of them.
Pretty awesome video man. I appreciate the effort that went into this
That basket weave Marshall with Greenbacks sounded super !
Thanks for putting the black shadows on their was thinking of getting 2
I think the 16 ohm setups sounded best of all. The Splawn Creamback 65 and the Marshall G12C & the G12M did it for me.
Agree. I've got a 16 ohm dv77 and a 16 ohm swamp thang blended together. Sounds epic. All thanks to Kristian Kohle
The Marshall with G12M Greenbacks is the clear winner. It would sit perfectly in a mix with less eq.
8-ohm Eminence DV 77- and 16-ohm Creamback 65, sounded good to my ears.
What can is that at 8:24?
Thanks to Glenn for screaming sense in to all of us.
I use K100s and have done for years - love em! Instant slayer.
my favorite are jensen speakers, they have a dip in the mids that makes most tube amps sound excellent
Great work, KB! 🤘
The Randall was a clear winner for me, that low end and overall eq balance was awesome. I’m surprised i liked it more than the Mesa V 30.
Oh yes! Very clear and tight! Not a Randall fan, but this cab sounds surprisingly awesome!
Not so surprising! The Randall had the actual Celestion V30's, but the Mesa had the Mesa V30's, which are slightly different.
Great video! it´s really curious , i find the best combination V30+ EVM12L ( comparing all i have tested ) and barely anyone uses that combination and its extremely tight, clear and thick....I recommend you to try that speakers!
Eminence p50e sounds great! Thanks for the great demo!
I have a 1972 Greenback cab and it's the best sounding cab there is. The Creambacks are very close.
damn that P50E in the VHT cab sounded sick, ill have to check those out at some point
im probably biased because i own them but i loved that Veteran 30 sound the best, the non mesa 8ohm v30 was pretty close though. i could see the k 100 mixing well with either of those.
I had a set of Vet 30's loaded in a Classic 50 that sounded phenomenal. Great speakers.
Kinda surprised to see that you didn't run the PRS MT100 through your ENGL E412 XXL cabinet... I would've loved to have heard how much more punch and low end the oversized cabinet delivered.
Engl makes the best sounding stuff. Every demo I hear, it's always great.
I like the Greenbacks the most - as always. It doesn't even matter which amp, somehow they always sound the best.
This video should help show the point the Gleen has trying to make all along!!! That changing your speakers will make a difference in your tone/sound...
Now to narrow down the choices to the couple I liked best......and it was mainly the one with speakers in it!!😂😂
I liked the Omega the most so far.
Ill have to watch a few more times to determine the rest.
I'd haver to go with that engl!
And after hearing the EV12L, I can’t figure out why old school Boogie guys hype it up so much, it sounded really bad to me
i agree. never liked ev12l and all electrovice derivates of this speaker.
Was digging those WGS 65s and the Creamback 65s
Excellent video. I love speaker/cab comparisons.
I got a v30 and dv77 in a 2x12 with evh 6l6 50 watt and it is brutal . Can't wait to get me a mesa recto 4x12 .
