Miles, I've noticed for some time now that your video, and especially your audio, has been great! Your on the water videos have super clear audio, even when it's very windy. Your extra attention and investment in your AV equipment is much appreciated.
Best “vlogging” cameras or camera to record while not on the water is your standard cell phone. iPhone 14 Pro Max or the Samsung Ultra 24 is almost impossible to beat. As for on the water setup the DJI Action 4 or the Insta360 Ace Pro are hard to beat. A “cheaper” alternative for a wireless mic is the Hollyland Lark. Just wanted to give budget gear for the people in the comments talking about prices.
Yup, I've been telling everyone I know that uses to gopro's to switch to DJI. GoPro literally hasn't made a reliable professional camera since the Hero 4 Black. Everything since then has been a glitchy, freezing, overheating mess. GoPro has the best video quality but if the camera doesn't work when you need it to, then it doesn't matter. Ive owned several gopros all the way back to the hero 3 and once I got the Osmo Action 1 next to hero 7 black. I knew I wasn't going to spend another penny on GoPro. Dont worry, you're not "bashing" them. You're just calling it like it is and stating facts. GoPro lost sight of delivering and maintaining quality products and instead have resulted to selling garbage because they know the masses will buy their new gimmick ever year. Almost exactly like Apple which is currently being sued by the U.S. Justice Department.
I bought the DJI and regretted it. What their online product description doesn't tell you is that it requires a phone app that's not compatible with many phones. Sent it back and ordered the go pro hero 11.
I’ve been recording with GoPro and it’s been frustrating. Video is great but recently my usb c port melted! I can still use it with batteries but I have to bring 3 on a normal day of fishing and rotate them about every hour to hour and a half.
I think your issues with memory cards is user error though because it sounds like you're trying to use cards that are too slow. You can't expect peak performance out of an engine if your transmission is crap. You need SD cards that have a minimum sustained write speed that is greater than the bit rate of your video recording. The higher the video quality, the higher the bit rate(more data). Just google/youtube "sd card specs explained". I just use the SanDisk Extreme's (Red/Gold). Ive got a 512GB in my Action 4 and the only thing I have to worry about is changing the battery which is hardly ever because the battery life is so good.
Yeah, it is certainly possible, although all I use is the most expensive cards I can find. I’ve been using SanDisk Extreme (red/gold) 256g with V-30 and U3 ratings which is enough for up to 8k, and I only film in 1080p, so I do not believe that its the case that my cards are wrong. All the cards that I had constant “file repairing” issues with GoPros are the ones I use with no issues on the Action 4. I’ve never skimped on SD cards, and have always done research into which ones I should buy, but I still had issues with all of my GoPros at some point……except for the first few generations of GoPro.
I’ve had the same experience with GoPro. I have a Hero 10 and it has never made it for an entire fishing trip without it stopping to work. I have just stuck in the closet and given up on videoing my fishing.
I may be in the market for a new action camera. I've been running a Yi 4k for 4 years, and it has been awesome. However, it has it's wear and tear and is starting to get buggy. Anyway, I have always used an external battery charger because I absolutely HATE to swap out batteries when I am out fishing. I want to set the camera on my Yolotec and forget about it. Does the DJI Action 4 take a charging cord while in use?
I haven’t had to plug it in to an external power source yet, but just like the GoPro cameras, I would just fill whatever hole that is open with YoloTek wax. The one drawback of DJI is that I can’t seem to find an aftermarket door for it that allows external USB-c plugs.

Agreed. I film a lot with my phone as long as the wind isn’t too bad.

Unfortunately that is exactly what I’ve experienced as well. DJI seems to have figured out all those things that drive me crazy with GoPro.

I have a Hero7 and a Hero9 and have had all the problems you described.
Record in 1080p 50 FPS also use a V30 micro SD Card. Mine never overheat now. 💯 Degree summer days all of last summer.
Yep, I don’t think all their cameras malfunction, but I have 7 and most of them have issues at one point or another.

If it works for you, that’s all that matters. Your phone is your best asset for low cost videos.

So you are saying that the camera doesn’t heat up ??? Is there an app like GoPro ? Is it voice activated . Is there a looping function?
It warms up but it doesn’t overheat and malfunction in my experiences so far. Yes on an app, voice activation and looping.
