Winter Camping in a Snow Storm, Solo Backpacking the North in a Blizzard - Cold Tent (Extended)

  • In this video I go Winter Camping in a Snow Storm/Blizzard without a hot tent, it has been a while since I went Winter Camping in a Snowstorm so this is an extended version, nearly twice as long as the original in anticipation of Winter Camping season that starts soon. I found the Storm Sounds from the second camera I was bringing and used that for its better wind sound quality. Using my Hilleberg Soulo & new Hyperlite Mountaingear Southwest 4400 backpack, I couldn't resist going out backpacking & camping in this snow storm, or blizzard, that has been going on for a week. The forecast said 28m/s, 63mph or 101km/h winds with minus ÷10°c or 14°F temperatures. I choose snow shoes for this early winter season trip, since the snow hasn't settled yet. It was wild but beautiful as I found a spot in the forrest with a bit more shelter from the wind. First trip with my new Hyperlite Mountaingear Southwest 4400 backpack.
    (Extended version)
This extended version has a more detailed look at preparing and setting up camp, as well as more time in the tent and a full gear list. I have also used the sound from both cameras I brought.
Check out this other winter camping video as well • Winter Camping in Cold...
Full gear list at the end of the video.
About me: I am a Norwegian adventurer and wilderness explorer. My youtube channel focus on outdoor wilderness adventures and exploration, backpacking, hiking, canyoneering, skiing, climbing and mountaineering. Nights spent in a tent, alone or with friends. From the snow covered mountains and misty fjords of Norway and Scandinavia to the remote plateaus of Yellowstone and the debts of the red canyons of Utah to the summit of Mt Whitney and the heart of Sequoia Kings Canyon National Park. I love the Wilderness! Email is under "For business inquiries", for general questions please comment on a video, I try to answer everyone. A warm welcome all the new viewers from around the world, really appreciate you all. Great video! The wind howling across the land, lashing the trees and rattling the tent was the perfect soundtrack, no superfluous attempt to dramatise with poorly chosen music noise. Other content creators take note please. This is how it's done. No halfwit dopey noises to distract or detract from this portrayal of the levels of brutal severity which winter weather can attain. Thankyou for your stoic resolve in making this film, in what for most of us, would be impossibly dangerous circumstances. Stay safe and best wishes, Art Sakr.

The love of nature, especially of your country, Jarl, must be of the highest level to face such extreme winter conditions : the snowflocks swept up as swords into your face by the howling blizzard... What 's more : all alone amid the wilderness, no house, no phone, no contact to anybody. We see you wrestling by setting up your tent. I often wonder what do you do if you don't feel well ? Can happen, doesn't it ? - Nevertheless the views of pinetrees beaten by the snow are as "live" christmas-postcards. Amazing ! Thank you Jarl to let us participate of this fantastic experience... from our lazy chair, near the chauffage...with a glass of wine... ! ❤ 😃

63 mph winds! Wind chill becomes a problem at those speeds. Good campsite location in that hellish wind. Good video quality, especially at night. I'm surprised a Norwegian is using snowshoes instead of skis. I actually own a pair of ASNES Combi Combat Norwegian military skis - all white, natch. But yeah, I do own a pair of MSR Lightning Ascent 'shoes for hunting in rugged terrain where skis would not work well.
My solo winter tent is a modified TARPTENT Moment DW (Double Wall) with heavier duty poles. With 2 doors & vestibules and good high/low ventilation it does well in winter.
My mummy bag is a size Long -20 F. 750 fill down bag with all elasticized draw cords. Size Long for water and boot liner storage.

Thank you for adding the extended version! This video shows a more realistic view of the effort to pitch a tent in stormy winter conditions.
Since you have both a Soulo and a Nallo tent I would be curious as to how they compare with ease of pitching and time required to pitch.
    Excellent video 👍 ❤

    • @NorwegianXplorer

I have added 12 sturdy small elastic bands to my Soulo RL guy lines where they attach to the tent, to keep the guy lines easily wrapped up if needed. Only a few grams extra and much less hassle when pitching or packing. Not sure how the elastic would hold up in freezing temperatures, they would probably snap.
A bit of stretchy paracord, with an adjustable loop, could achieve the same and is probably more useful in winter.

@@NorwegianXplorer it is great gear in my opinion. This is my hobby and I learn a lot about it and test it out regularly and have gone through many versions of gear and ended up with nearly the exact same kit that you have here. It is sometimes difficult to understand why/what is needed until you actually go out and try something like this on your own. We all have our personal preferences for gear and even need to learn what we prefer ourselves through trial and error. For example, I tend to like a 2-person version of the tent, the Tarra, at home and in theory, but the extra size and weight is definitely noticed in the mountains. Keep making great videos!

Would like to camp in the snow but I don’t think I can survive, watching you just enough to cozily feel the vibe without being too cold, how do you sleep and how to keep yourself comfortably warm enough so that you get enough sleep in the extreme weather like that?

The body heat warms up the sleeping bag from the inside, it is quite comfortable actually

Nasty storm ! I'm sure you where glad to be inside the tent at one point . Why did you feel you had to put snow around the base of your tent , it seemed it was well set up with all the guy lines ? You choose a good spot to set your tent . When available thought , I prefer to be surrounded by smaller trees for safety . Thank you for the gear list at the end and thank you for sharing this epic video

Thank you, the added snow makes it even more stable, and keeps snow from getting in under the fly.

Looks like northern Ontario Canada. I have seen -50 once at our 🏕 ⛺️ camp. -40 is quite common. Why do you measure wind in meters per second? We use kilometres per hour.

    • @NorwegianXplorer
      @NorwegianXplorer  2 роки тому +2

In Norway we use m/s, km/h would be around 101 for the wind speed on this trip

The miles per hour and miles in distance mean far more too me than kilometres. I still ask in the UK 🇬🇧 for a 1/4 of sweets. Kilometres mean nothing too me. I left school as kilometres came in. I’m still a pound and ounces girl. I went too college for catering and bakery. But I’ll still convert back to what I know. The weight changes and stuff was literally an excuse too increase prices. As the UK 🇬🇧 thank God is no longer in Europe. I can’t see why we can’t go back too gallons instead of litres and so forth. WHY NOT????????😢❤

@@janetburrows137 congratulations on being so stupid as to fail to grasp the metric system in 50 years. you're far too old for your opinion on this to be of any relevence.

@@janetburrows137 Well, the Imperial system is screwed. For example, in Canada an Imperial gallon is around 4.5 litres AND in the US, a gallon is around 4 litres. There is more...I am a surveyor and when surveyors work in Imperial, we work in 10ths, 100ths and even 1000ths of a foot. So, if work in decimal feet, I must then convert everything to carpenters rule because trades people have NFC what decimal feet are. Now, here is the beauty of metric, it doesn't matter what you do, everyone knows what a millimeter is, centimeter, meter and so on. I, as a surveyor love metric. Make my job way easier. I can work in both, but metric is so much cooler.

I suppose it’s each too there own. You end up buying lots of new Tools cos of the different systems. But thank you 🙏 Love ❤️ for your response. God Bless you and All your family and friends. 👍💕🙏❤️🤷‍♀️

Thanks, this was filmed mostly with an iphone 11 promax which is great in cold weather, some shots also with a gopro 10, which dies after a few minutes. I try to keep the gopro batteries close to my skin inside my clothes
