Is the rain coat waterproofing a rubbish surface finish or full gore tex? the finishes in my opinion all wear off. we need coats that last 30 years not 3 years. finishes imo opinion cannot be made good, nikwax re-proofer is too gentle organic to be any good imo, I've got three waterproof coats all no longer waterproof. I'm thinking all rubber or full gore tex, non of these other finishes. are much cop, and the brands degrade too quick to trust. truly wonderful drone shots in the morning.
Good thoughts there and who knows! The cynic in me says that if they made the coating to never wear off, we would never buy a new jacket! I've had good results with Nickwax, but like you say it wears off too quickly. Liking the idea of Paramo jackets and doing some research on them at the mo......
Hi, I appreciate you taking us along for your travels. The way your tent stood up to the winds was impressive. I've seen new products like small wind turbines for backpackers coming out, so that they can power their electronic devices. I wonder if you might consider trying to review any such products you can get your hands on, to show us how useful they are in these conditions.
The drone footage almost brought tears to my eyes. I took my teenage son out for a wild camp in the ridge between Carnedd Dafydd and Carnedd Llewelyn a couple of weeks ago. We got a bit battered by rain and wind but woke to a glorious sunrise and rising mist. My son said it was one of the most awesome things he’d ever seen. We’d love to do a winter camp and your video is an inspiration to go do that. Keep up the great work.
There's something magical about getting out of the bad weather in a tent you trust. Once you put that lantern on, the outside world can do it's thing and be damned.

Went to my local supplier in November, Climbers Shop, Ambleside. Thought i would replace the Mountain Equipment shell I had on, circa 2002 for a new one! Matey said! WHY!! There’s nothing wrong with that one! Did not expect that response! And saved £300. Thank you for inviting me to your birthday celebration. I've followed the channel for many years now Chris. I've watched camps in the lakes, the pennine moors and enjoyed the Halloween specials on pendle hill and October camps with the lads. I've enjoyed gear reviews and made a few purchases thanks to mcm outdoors. We've all watched you go through hard times and come out the other side and watched nostalgic walks from your childhood where you talk about mindfulness and have no doubt helped and inspired people not to mention you getting out with your kids and other youtubers. I've sat in on the live chats and asked questions. I have to say though that this video was probably my favourite mcm video yet. It had everything. The build up and walk to the camp and the sense of relaxation when you pitched up really came across. That morning....wow, I got a bit emotional to be honest. Keep up the good work and a very happy birthday mate.

Your right about the older labels being some of the best,when the companies started clawing in the expenditure on the quality they killed the brands themselves..they should have stayed true to themselves and not gotten so greedy & hopped on the disposable society train. Special memories in that jacket of yours and it looked new! It shows that you have looked after it and it's definitely looked after you in return. Yes, many brands which were superb, have now become 'high street' brands, with quality falling by the wayside...... it's a shame. That's why I like Scandinavian gear so much - many of those brands do not sacrifice quality for margins! The original Mera Peak was outstanding - other than the elastics, it's pretty much 8/10 condition - I really try and look after my gear, was overly so at one point but it's got to be used at the end of the day - a few minutes at the end of a trip etc, sees the gear right for many years to come hopefully. Hello from NZ, the world becomes a different place when the snows come, but what a place!! I could feel the cold through my screen. I just love being on the 'tops', it's magical. On some of our ranges we have eternal snow, but you have to climb higher for that. I'm constantly in the mountains and have been for 50 + years. Well you certainly are a braver fashion lion than I am! I have an old skiing jacket in that vibrant indigo colour and I absolutely love it. It's in good nick too. But it sticks out like a sore thumb in the slopes. So I don't. Good on you for looking past all that nonsense! 👏

That Jacket! The nuts! "I bought this myself, Hilleberg don't give tents away" intentional or not, that line is immense. The amount of people selling Soulo's just to go out and buy a new Vern 1 is insane. It's no doubt a great tent but if you have a Soulo, I don't believe you need to sell, each to their own mind you. Yep, each to their own..... Competition is always good for the consumer. I will hopefully try a Vern 1 at some point and then I will make a genuine comparison, having used the Soulo since 2016 in many different weather conditions. Thank you for watching and taking time to leave me a comment 👍🏕️

Great vid. I started off with a Berghaus Trango Extrem back in 1992. Had it for 16 years and then gave it to my brother who also used it for a good few years. Top quality. I agree that they seemed to focus on high street sales in more recent times, however, the Extrem range is back with some really good kit 👍
Will have to check out that range mate! Sounds like it's maybe a step up - however, I've not seen that original Mera Peak bettered ? Is there a new version of this jacket ? Cheers!
That was an absolute fantastical camp. I was out a couple of weeks ago and had no signal on my radio or network on my phone, gutted. Then i remembered id downloaded a film. Relief from what could have been a long night lol. Good to see you back out. Happy birthday Chris

I bought the thermarest 'chair ' that slips over mat.Comfortable and great back support,because it is so low to the ground you can use it in a tent.weighs very little also.

Thank you - yes, it's plain to see in the video - the Soulo is hardly moving in the conditions. When pitched correctly and used correctly, it is a superbly strong and stable shelter and in my view, unsurpassed yet in a one person tent for sheer strength and quality.
Hi Chris a hot tent 🏕️ is better in the Winter 🥶 you would have to buy a wood 🪵 stove make sure the rating on it on how much heat comes out of it just a tip 😊
I'm not sure I would have liked to lug a hot tent, stove and fuel up there 😁 was bad enough wit everything I took. I was lovely and warm, I enjoy these conditions. Thank you for watching 👍

@@MCMOutdoors for sure pal. While we're here and looking at your Soulo BL, i think it's fair to say it's still the King of 1 man winter mountain tents. I've seen the recent Vern 1 reviews, and i know it's a steal at the price when compared, but i'll go for a proven track record - The BL is on the shopping list, now i just need to decide what colour to get.
Yes, the Vern 1 looks nice on paper - I'd like to test one to compare. Lots of claims at the moment, but no real tests that I have seen - nothing more than over dramatic claims...... The Soulo BL is for me, the ultimate in one person shelters until I've experienced the competition. You won't regret it 👍

What a lovely vid Chris, truly stunning, epic scenery. The Hilleberg truly is a brilliant tent Allthough I will admit I sold mine in favour of a tarptent Scarpe 1. It was condensation issues that did it for me in the end. I see your rocking the fjallraven kebs, a brilliant all round pair of trousers I allways revert to. Hope you had a lovely birthday and hope you were spoilt rotten. Keep up the great work mate.

The wind chill was ace - I looked like a beetroot on the way back home :-) That morning was magical and for the time the skies were clear, I will never forgot those views and the atmosphere!
Great video 👍 but the hilleburg is definitely not a bomb proof tent! I’ve seen them fail many times in the wind unfortunately! I think there just becoming a fashionable tent to have now on UA-cam! I use the Nordisk Svalbard on the mountains, it’s built like a tank.
Cheers for watching! Respectfully disagree with your comment about Hilleberg being fashionable for UA-cam - tried and tested brand with real pedigree and used in the harshest places of the world. I've owned the Soulo for around 8 years and used in a variety of conditions, some extreme. Never failed, only once had a pole bend slightly in extreme winds - Hille replaced the pole section without question. It's a great tool for a job 👍 Nordisk make some superb tents, the Svalbard is nice. Low profile to shed wind, although not much space. I have the Telemark 2.2LW, Oppland and Halland 2LW, fantastic. ATB 👍

That Jacket! The nuts! "I bought this myself, Hilleberg don't give tents away" intentional or not, that line is immense. The amount of people selling Soulo's just to go out and buy a new Vern 1 is insane. It's no doubt a great tent but if you have a Soulo, I don't believe you need to sell, each to their own mind you. Lá breithe shona duit a chara - happy birthday my friend.
Yep, each to their own..... Competition is always good for the consumer. I will hopefully try a Vern 1 at some point and then I will make a genuine comparison, having used the Soulo since 2016 in many different weather conditions. Thank you for watching and taking time to leave me a comment 👍🏕️

Great vid. I started off with a Berghaus Trango Extrem back in 1992. Had it for 16 years and then gave it to my brother who also used it for a good few years. Top quality.
I agree that they seemed to focus on high street sales in more recent times, however, the Extrem range is back with some really good kit 👍
Will have to check out that range mate! Sounds like it's maybe a step up - however, I've not seen that original Mera Peak bettered ? Is there a new version of this jacket ? Cheers!
That was an absolute fantastical camp. I was out a couple of weeks ago and had no signal on my radio or network on my phone, gutted. Then i remembered id downloaded a film. Relief from what could have been a long night lol. Good to see you back out. Happy birthday Chris

I bought the thermarest 'chair ' that slips over mat.Comfortable and great back support,because it is so low to the ground you can use it in a tent.weighs very little also.
Yeah, I've got one mate - the 'trekker' chair...... I just don't know whether I trust it not to damage the mat ?

Thank you - yes, it's plain to see in the video - the Soulo is hardly moving in the conditions. When pitched correctly and used correctly, it is a superbly strong and stable shelter and in my view, unsurpassed yet in a one person tent for sheer strength and quality.
Hi Chris a hot tent 🏕️ is better in the Winter 🥶 you would have to buy a wood 🪵 stove make sure the rating on it on how much heat comes out of it just a tip 😊
I'm not sure I would have liked to lug a hot tent, stove and fuel up there 😁 was bad enough wit everything I took.

@@MCMOutdoors for sure pal. While we're here and looking at your Soulo BL, i think it's fair to say it's still the King of 1 man winter mountain tents. I've seen the recent Vern 1 reviews, and i know it's a steal at the price when compared, but i'll go for a proven track record - The BL is on the shopping list, now i just need to decide what colour to get.
Yes, the Vern 1 looks nice on paper - I'd like to test one to compare. Lots of claims at the moment, but no real tests that I have seen - nothing more than over dramatic claims...... The Soulo BL is for me, the ultimate in one person shelters until I've experienced the competition. You won't regret it 👍

What a lovely vid Chris, truly stunning, epic scenery. The Hilleberg truly is a brilliant tent Allthough I will admit I sold mine in favour of a tarptent Scarpe 1. It was condensation issues that did it for me in the end. I see your rocking the fjallraven kebs, a brilliant all round pair of trousers I allways revert to. Awesome camp 😊 I've got a red Mera peak from 2005 still use it, Berghaus replaced the main zip for me free of charge ten years ago!!

Absolutely epic way to spend turning 42🎉 stunning scenery and loved the drone footage the following morning. Heck of a wind chill up there. That’s definitely a camp you won’t forget mate. Brilliant ⛺️❄️🥶👌
The wind chill was ace - I looked like a beetroot on the way back home :-) That morning was magical and for the time the skies were clear, I will never forgot those views and the atmosphere!

Great video 👍 but the hilleburg is definitely not a bomb proof tent! I’ve seen them fail many times in the wind unfortunately! I think there just becoming a fashionable tent to have now on UA-cam! I use the Nordisk Svalbard on the mountains, it’s built like a tank.
Cheers for watching! Respectfully disagree with your comment about Hilleberg being fashionable for UA-cam - tried and tested brand with real pedigree and used in the harshest places of the world. I've owned the Soulo for around 8 years and used in a variety of conditions, some extreme. Never failed, only once had a pole bend slightly in extreme winds - Hille replaced the pole section without question. It's a great tool for a job 👍 Nordisk make some superb tents, the Svalbard is nice. Low profile to shed wind, although not much space. I have the Telemark 2.2LW, Oppland and Halland 2LW, fantastic. ATB 👍
