- 3 days Arctic Solo Backpacking & Camping in a Heavy Rain, Extreme Weather Extended version with all the backpacking and Camping of the trip. Lightning, Thunderstorm & Heavy Wind, Scariest Storm Camping experience of my life! ASMR and Rain Sounds. (Extended version).
The closest town measured an all time record for rainfall with 36.4 mm in one hour, which is an all time high record for the northern half of the country. This happened sometime around my dinner.
This was my scariest storm camping experience so far. I was above the polar circle in the arctic at 70.5° North, alone 35 km into the wilderness, when one of the most brutal thunder and lightning storms I have ever experienced hit me. It lastet for over 12 hours and had some of the most scary thunder and lightning I have seen. It felt like I was getting hit right on the head. I did manage to capture some great footage of the lightning though. This is the furthest north and most remote place I have ever backpacked in a very wild and cool area. Enjoy the storm!
Contains elements of AMSR
70.5°north
560km/349miles north of the polar circle
Roughly as far north as:
Wainwright - Alaska
Ulukhatok - Canada
Wrangel Island - Russia
550km/342miles further north than Iceland

Cheers buddy, I know from past experience how scary it can be when being hit by a massive thunderstorm/rain. Specially high up in the mountains. Good gear and ... comfort food / coffee will be welcome breaks.
Tell me about it!! Thank you so much for your support, really appreciated!!
I am 81yrs now. Very tired of the pain, anxiety and negative I'm surrounded by. I will be returning Home soon and cant wait. My sweet dog, Izzy, is waiting for me, I'm very excited to see her. To all of you listening to this music from our angels, please care for yourself. Listen to what you need, I did not. I was a nurse for 54 yrs and wore my spirit and body down, not thinking of what I needed. So, listen to your soul, follow your guides. God bless.♥
Thank you Brian!
Please have a good physician check gor a systemic infection. Things like borrelia, Q fever, systemic chlamydia ( transmitted by fly feces), babesiosis, Valley fever, micoplasma etc will cause wide spread or specific pain. Many doctors just say that we are aging. At 81 you should not be in that much pain. Also, see a pain specialist. Pain can be relieved by subixone or methadone or an MAOI group of medications. I had atypical Trigeminal neuralgia for 8 years with almost no relief because it presented as head pain at the top of my head. Borrelis caused it. I treated for just over 5 yeats as I was in end stage with neurological problems. I could not get a doctor to help control the pain because of a silly unwritten rule that head pain is not treated with pain medication. Well, bull, I say. My pain was already 24/7 , so I don't understand why the concern over rebound head pain? Good luck to you & God Bless you.
Kindest thoughts from me Brian. Blessings to you and Izzy. I am looking forward to see my sweet girl when I cross over too. I hope you will have some brighter days yet. God bless.
All tents need a plastic window to look out of. I need to see the rain or snow, I need to see the trees blowing in the wind.. I need to see what's sniffing around my camp at night without having to open a noisy zipper. Camping in these types of conditions is a great experience but without real windows its only half the experience! Awesome videos man I like them all.
Hehe, makes sense, I have never owned a tent with windows
I also appreciate that you don't get overly excited and feel the need to talk through the entire event like most presenters do. Thanks for letting us enjoy the awesome sound with you.
Yes! Thank you!
You have no idea how much i love your videos!!! Especially your Winter storm van lufe videos!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Awesome, Thank you!
Since 3 weeks Im listening to this video every night to get to. Sleep to fight against my ptsd so thank you so mutch
I am glad you find it useful:-)
The weather is brutal, but I love it. Thank you Jaal for another amazing adventure. I love it. That lightening is very scary. Norway is so beautiful.
Glad you enjoyed it
Absolutely stunning country. I’m a Norwegian born in the U.S. My grandfather came to the U.S as a child … I always wished I could have made there to see my roots… I am in love with the country. It’s one of the most beautiful places in the world to me . I’m glad I found this channel
Thank you Sandra and welcome!!
Talk about the calm before the storm. Wow!!
Indeed it was!
Oh i so love your videos Norwegian Xplorer!!
You know how i feel about your camera work & filming. Just exceptional my friend!
Every time i think of your all your amazing videos, the specific one that always comes to mind, is your camping trip 1000 metres above the fjords.
That just blew my mind! The fjords, those views, the sunrise & sunset, just amazing!
I think i've watched that video approx 5 times now! lol
This camping trip is Wow! Mother Nature is unparalleled in description. The scenery, the wide expanse, the mountains, the clouds hovering, then rolling in & out, so beautiful!
And of course my favourite part, the sound of the rain, albeit, it's very heavy & unrelenting during your camping trip.
Once it ceases & you can venture outside again, just wonderful! It's especially nice, when the sky clears & the sun reappears.
Tusen takk for sharing another awesome video here & i'll be checking out many of your other videos, that i've yet to watch.
Wishing you happy travels, as always!
Awesome, thank you so. much, yeah that 1000m above the fjord was special!
The most memorable and enjoyable camp I did was with my son who was 10 at the time, we drove away up to the mountains here in Scotland, pitched my brand new tent, id bought in a half-price sale, and the weather forecast was to be pretty good. However, within 10 minutes of arriving, we were hammered by gale-forced winds and torrential rain for a solid 24 hours and literally only left the tent to go pee pee in the potty. I wouldn't change a thing now looking back.
Me neither
How did the half-price tent fare through it all?
@@chrisneeds6125 Absolute perfectly in every way mate. Still going strong and getting used now. Vango Talos 400. Only ever had to give it a re-waterproofing once with Fabsil gold and a spray bottle.
I absolutely like the sound of the wind & rain against the tent , what an awesome experience. Stay safe & God bless you!
Thanks, you too Cynthia!
Oh yes, me too Cynthia! It's so awesome!
Im with ya on that ✌️👍
I watched 2 times the shorter versions and this time I watched it with my headphone on(stereo sound). It just scary, and fantastic to hear the sound of rain and thunder.Your reaction at 37.48 follow by thunder is epic.I advice others to use their head phone for this video. The best thunder and rain camping video on you tube.
That is so awesome to hear, thank you very much, I am glad I had a decent microphone for the camera, it seems to work well:-)🫶
24:40 that view.. The first time I saw it was in your other video and I was mesmerized by those cliffs.. Im so happy that you are showing more footage of these majestic cliffs across the fjord
Thank you, it is a special place indeed!
Jarl, I think the narrating is a great way to help viewers know what the trip is about, exactly where you are and what your expectations are about what to expect on your hikes. I think that showing your coordinates and a general idea of where you are going is a great touch. That was a crazy trip, I’d be scared for my life too! Well done.
Thank you Susan, I like that as well, some people also like me to not talk, so I do a little of both😄
This has to be my favourite upload out of all of them watched it a few times snuggled down listening to the storm & rain on you’re tent, natures mighty power and raw beauty 💚 crocs, coffee and rain again Perrrfect 😊
Wow, thank you Sammy:-)
You lived! That's what makes a great adventure! Thanks for your video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Yet again, what an amazing experience! The view at 2'.22" with the small waterffalls, stole my heart!
Thank you Nikos!
Cool......Calm.....&....Collected......A "Hiker" personified
Glad you enjoyed it!, and thank you so much for your kind comments!
Well put!
The sound of the rain is really something, and therapeutic at the same time. Mother Nature is fantastic isnt she! You are living the life! There’s so about being in the massive storm and getting all rugged up and cozy in your tiny little tent with a warm cup of tea/coffee ❤ thank you for sharing this video. Loved it, from Brisbane Australia 🇦🇺
Thank you Savannah for watching all the way from Brisbane!
OMG !! Just Amazing .
Thank you!
First of all what a beautiful landscape! That's really a wonderful place man! Than the cozy feeling when you're listing to the rain hitting the tent... man I love that 🏕🌧🤩 All in all an awesome video and thanks for sharing. Greetings from Germany 🤠👋
Thank you very much!
Amazing adventure.😍
Thank you!
Norwegian Xplorer, I always wanted this video ❤
Thank you!!
27:33 Heavy Rain
Oh my . I'm glad you are safe and that you arrived to your destination okay without too much misery..
THANK you for bringing your WONDERFUL adventures to us all!. God bless and love you and yours and always keep you safe, safe, safe😊
You are so welcome
Thank you so much for another awesome vid ❤ Thank you also for the commentary as I can’t easily see what’s going on since I’m visually impaired / blind. Again, thank you 🙏
Thank you, I am glad you are able to follow along Jennifer!
Very good video. Most of these "so called" film makers miss the point of a rain video. The rain. But you nailed it! Good on you, Man. Two thumbs up.
Thank you, appreciate it!
I enjoyed watching this video very much. Crazy weather.
Indeed, thanks for watching!
I would never trust a single-walled tent even in soft rains. It condenses on the inside, and if it's old enough then rainwater can leak from the seams or even from the walls itself. However, with a well-constructed double-wall and adequately insulated pad and sleeping bag, I can see myself enjoying a book with intermittent tea or coffee breaks even in the midst of such a tempest!
It's as in all-day life : the sun doesn't shine every day. And a camping- night can turn into a real misery. Tempest. Sweeping rain, howling wind, growling thunder, scaring lightnings....Your anxiety is quite normal, Jarl : all alone, far away from any help, from any people to contact, delivered to the angry rain- and thundergods.... Luckily your tent wasn't swept off by the wind nor hit by the lightnings ! You went through that night very courageously, dear Jarl ! And on your wandering back, you could welcome (for a few moments) a white-clouded blue sky.... Perhaps you drove to a guest-house and enjoyed a good meal and a warm and dry bed....??
Jarl didn't have to go to all that extra trouble setting up his camera equipment to make this video in addition to everything Mother Nature was throwing at him; to make this video for us, Camping isn't always fun & games as we all saw, almost first hand.
My prayers were with you asking God to get you home well and safely!
Thank you!
Superb video. Good photography. Thanks for uploading.
Thank you!
Det var skremmende og fantastisk å sjå denne videoen. Naturen er ikkje å spøke med. Ta godt vare på deg sjøl❤❤
Great video again. Thanks for letting us share the experience with you.
Thanks for watching Mark!
The first 30 minutes viewed a spectacular beautiful country!!! So gorgeous and untouched by human error! The best experiences are far and away from the human race! LOL Wonderful. I loved the pristine mini waterfalls and the beautiful rivers snaking around the terrain. I can imagine it was a little refreshing to trek through the brooks/creeks. You did well during this storm. And I must say that I was very impressed with your tent! It did not move a bit! It held up so well. I was so saddened when I saw that the tent started leaking at the seams of the zippers and other places. SO disappointing!! It would make a night like that completely miserable!! And to have a wet sleeping bag - awful! But you kept a positive attitude. So this trip was a good proving ground test for the company who makes those tents. I notice on your videos with various tents, that the tents are like a tent inside of a tent. A great idea. I enjoyed this one and hope you made it back to your van in good condition and well.
Thank you, this was a great adventure, and the tent really is great, sadly this area might be destroyed by Fred Olsen Renewables in the near future to build wind farms, can you believe it!?
@@NorwegianXplorer Oh no!!! Like I said above, "human error". 🤣🤣🤣
Amazing video. Thanks.
Glad you liked it!
0:53 Wow! That place is so beautiful, like a painting.
It is!
The extended version my favorite 😊 thank you for all your hard work and dedication and being able to bring this content.
You're so welcome!
Thankfully, your tent did a superb job in terrible conditions. That was certainly an experience for you!
It was!
Whoa! That was one super storm. I guess I will think twice about getting one of those tents. Sorry to hear you had such a miserable night, but it was a good idea to get out of there quickly. It was exciting to watch if you weren't there! Stay safe.
It a real strong tent, dont be put off by the leak🙂
Great Video!! Thanks for sharing!!!
Thanks Joe!
Legend has it,...... he's still walking today.
Indeed:-)
Just beautiful 😊
Thank you! Cheers!
Insane. Glad you came out of this storm safe.
It was pretty intense:-)
Thanks for the hike and your intrepid adventures. Glad to join you virtually on your journeys,
Welcome aboard Lynn, glad to have you!
Jarl there was a monster knocking on the door. Man, I had watched the short version but this showed really how intense it was. Although it cleared you made the right call to pack it up and move back. A wet bag and freezing temps coming is a deadly combination. One can't play the what if game with Nature because odds are it wins. The price can be way too high. We talked about the leaky tent and I have spoke with others since. That vent is of issue. It sure is strong to stand that wind and pressure. I was hoping too you could make it on down the peninsula. Maybe next time. Incredible views. Great lightning strike captures. Best to lie down flat with arms and legs close together to prevent current crossing heart as much as you can. It was over head as the 1, 1 thousand, 2, 2 thousand count goes it was right on top. Glad you made it ok. Text Hildebrand. You bought a tent, not a sieve.
Thanks Sam!
Ok I'm new here. I was on You Tube and came across your video and I just read how scared you were. Thank God you made it through. I do love thunder and winter storms so much. Also, camping. I can only imagine you getting the full blunt force of the wind because there is nothing for it to bounce off of. No walls, or trees etc.
Thank you so much!
Wooooooooooow That's some pretty strong wind. I'm glad you bought that tent as well scary😮 but interesting at the same time. OK. I'm going stop talking now & get back to the video. Much 💕 💕
Lol!
Excellent video. Once more. We love these trips on Scandinavia. ✌️👍🇳🇴🇵🇹
Glad you like them! Thank you!
@@NorwegianXplorer Keep posting your adventures!! Let me sugest you three more places in Norway for new camping and trekking adventures: i) Senja Island and Husoy; ii) Lynguen Alps; iii) Track to Havoysund (taking the FV 889 and lefting there your car). We spent there few days in these three places, with our BMW motorcycle and I think they are the most beautiful 👌places above Artic circle in Norway. If you are not convinced, take a look to our channel in a few days - we'll post a video with our trip to these places.
@@eutunos Thanks!
Tusen takk for kjempeflotte videoar!!
Tusen takk Hallvard🙏
Another fantastic video of your experiences. What horrendous weather you had to put up with. Great to watch and listen to. Keep it up
Thanks Jimmy!
Дойти до края земли это подвиг!!!! 👍
Thank you for taking me to all the beautiful places I can never go and on all the wild adventures. The storm was epic and so scary. ❤
Glad you enjoyed it Linda!

It is indeed!
Whoever is listening to this, may your heart heal from stress and fulfill it with peace. ❤
Great video, I really enjoyed the superb camera angles and how you made us feel like we were there with you.
One point that may have been already raised regarding the leaking tent, I've the Akto and it is also well known to leak through the vent zip, I treated mine with some silicone sealer in spray can and it solved the issue.
Thank you and thanks for the tips!
@@NorwegianXplorer I also own the Kaitum 2 GT which is a beast though at around 5 metres long and close to 4kg it's too much for wild camping. Just subscribed to your channel, great content!
Best regards from Ireland!
@@Hightower600 Thank you so much! I use a Soulo and Nallo 3, the Nallo 3 is a good compromise between weight and durability I think. Thanks for subscribing, appreciate it!
I live in SE England and I love visiting the Highlands of Scotland for multi-day hikes and camps. The area you walked in is just amazing and so remote. I enjoy the solitude of climbing mountains by myself but I think even I’d be worried as there’s no one else around. Being so close to the Arctic Ocean the weather is going to be severe at times, I can only imagine how dark and cold it would be in winter. How difficult is it to get there? My wife lived in Bergen for a while and tells me it just rained all the time. Thanks for making videos and sharing them
Yeah, Bergen IS rain! It is a long walk to get in here, but it is off the E6 at Ifjordfjellet
The Scenery is spectacular and haven't even got to the storm yet.
Enjoy Colin!
Have you ever been here before? Those mountains are amazing.
What a beautiful landscape for hiking. Such a beautiful place to visit and explore.💯💯

That was a good test for your Hilleberg Jarl, do not be disappointed, all 4 season tents are prone to leaking if haven’t been seam-sealed it.
I have got a Fjallraven Abisko 1 Lite 4 season and it leaked on me on my first night up in the Scottish Highlands and yet I still love it, fantastic little tent that can put up with some nasty weather.
I will seam-seal it before my trip to Norway just to be prepared and, it won’t take long to do it to be honest.
Thank you for taking us along and sharing with us those beautiful places.
Regards,
Florin
Thanks Florin, I have had a few tests of the Soulo, this was not the worst:-)
@@NorwegianXplorer OK, interesting you saying that. I was thinking upgrading from Abisko 1 Lite to Soulo but know I am conflicted weather that is the right thing to do.
To what type of hiker would you recommend Hilleberg Soulo and for what sort of conditions Jarl, if you don't mind me asking.
I originally got the Soulo to use as a winter tent, but it felt too small so I got the nallo 3 instead, now I use the Soulo for spring, summer, fall when the forecast is bad, windy or rainy, but most of the time I just take my little inexpensive Marmot Tungsten UL 1p which is much lighter. I am not really a big fan of carrying tents that are above 1.5kg in summer. Apart from the weight the Suolo is a really amazing tent and it can handle anything.
@@NorwegianXplorer I agree Jarl, Suolo is fantastic yet not perfect.
Thank you for your honest insight and good luck with your channel and I look forward to watching your next trip.

Florin
thanks:-)

HELLO. EXCELLENT. CAMPING.
Thanks 👍
So beautiful that CRYSTAL CLEAR water flowing down stream where you can see the bottom. Compare that to water in Mumbai brother? That water is from God...thank You Jesus...
As long as I weren’t cold I would have slept like a baby through all of that. Well, maybe except the lightening. That might have set my teeth on edge. I would have taken a book to read. Thanks for the sights and sounds.
Thanks for watching!
I absolutely love your adventures, but this one was especially nerve-racking for me. Stay safe in your travels.
Thank you! Will do!
Love the way I can hear tree leaves rustle in the 💨 wind. Must say I would love to be able to see the cat on the bed. However it’s too dark back there. Thanks. Love this one
Not really any trees out here but hey, lol

Hi there. I just found your video. It is absolutely beautiful there. The mountains are so pretty. I don’t think I would like to camp in the open with a bad storm like that. I love going on these camping trips. I get to see places I would never get to see on my own. It’s always interesting and fun to go along. I’m so glad there are people like you who share their wild adventures. I thank you for that. Stay safe and God bless you. 💦💦🙋🏻♀️🌩⚡️🌩 I hate lighting…. That is way to scary for me and was way to close for comfort.
Thank you Jo Ann and welcome!
Beautiful scenery and wildlife. Although it makes for great video setting up your walking away from the camera and back into camera frames it must get exhausting having to run back and forth to set up and retrieve the camera :) That storm though 😮 Especially scary is the lightning.
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice video. Keep it up 👍
Thank you!
Great video mate, that storm was brutal, good job you were in the soulo, shame about the wind driving the rain up and under the vent canopy, wonder if you can put some sealant in that end bit? That lightning looked to close for comfort too🫣, atb Mick 👍
Yes it can be sealed, thanks Mick!
3rd watch. Amazing trip. You couldn't get that kind of rain pressure running through a car wash. You know those red cliffs may have saved your bacon. Sure the iron mineral content would help draw the lightning away from those skinny aluminum poles. Always the path of least resistance.
Thanks Sam!
If you get rain dripping into the tent from small leaks, and you don't have any sealing tape, try chewing gum, chew till its soft and plug any holes that are leaking, I used it on my motorcycle fuel tank and it stopped a leak from the fuel running out.
Thanks George, the chance of me bringing chewing gum is however not very likely😄
Great video! Crazy storm! Where was the tent leaking? I am thinking about getting one and that made me think twice now. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! It is a great tent, I would not hesitate to get one, you can seal the leak, its at the top of the zipper where there is a little gap.
Abi paylaşımların cok güzel emeğine sağlık türkiyeden selamlar
Thank you, greetings!!
Great video. Very impressive with these sounds, the violence of which is certainly not measured through headphones. But also, what an idea to go campaigning on this abandoned planet. 🤔
Thank you, great place to explore!
I hope you bring along a locater beacon on your trips...
I second the motion.
Especially appreciate the relative lack of on camera commentary- allowed me to focus on experiencing the conditions with you, not a lot of camping bloggers get that !
Too much talk can be annoying, I agree:-)
