Inside an Architect’s Experimental Japanese-Inspired Home in Los Angeles (House Tour)

- Ridge Residence by Hsu McCullough is an architect’s own home. Conceived as an experimental, pavilion-style form in Los Angeles’s Sherman Oaks neighbourhood and designed by owners and architects Peggy Hsu and Chris McCullough, the experimental, Japanese-inspired house embraces its topography and provides a feeling of solitude in California.
Peggy and Chris - an avid collector - were drawn to the site’s potential for an experimental, Japanese-inspired architecture. Peggy says, “the area is less densely populated on the hillside and most properties have deep backyards. Ours frames an uninterrupted view of Fossil Ridge Park - it can never be developed and there are no homes, just a natural landscape featuring hillside oak trees and unique wildlife.”
The interior design of this Japanese-inspired house features a textural materiality, and plants blur the boundaries between inside and out. Inside, texture, art and materiality converge in a layered interior. An architect’s own home can often lead to experimental and deeply personal design outcomes - a sentiment that rings true in this house. The kitchen sits beneath a picture window that captures western sun and provides sightlines to the street. Given its proximity to the living room, its aesthetic relationship to the rest of the home was an important experimental consideration. As such, Peggy and Chris looked to Fisher & Paykel for appliances, tapping into the company’s integration capabilities and refined aesthetic to match their experimental vision.
The Column Refrigerator and Freezer are integrated into the kitchen cabinetry, the black glass induction cooktop complements the charcoal joinery, and the Downdraft Range Hood allows for considerable flexibility. “Fisher & Paykel helped us specify this retractable exhaust, which sits behind the induction cooktop so when it’s not in use, it disappears into the counter space,” Peggy shares.
As an architect’s own home, Ridge Residence’s tactility and experimental undertone result in a meaningful architectural expression. As the timber silvers and the roof gardens grow, this home will be enveloped by its environment, melding into the hillside upon which is sits.

this home strikes a remarkable balance between sensuality and maturity, with a well-executed design that incorporates both dark and colorful elements, all while paying a respectful tribute to Japanese design influences. this goes without saying-i'm a big fan!
This is how you do a dark, moody house right! There is so much texture and dark materials, yet the place looks inviting and still somehow bright. All the textures and detailing do not make the house look too busy. It just feels right. I love that collection of records! It's both aesthetically pleasing and incredibly cool by itself.
Just like the words at the end of the video that says, "Can you believe it's true?", I'm blown away by how stylish this house is. Best house on the channel thus far. A home that reflects the homeowners' personality.
This house is so fun! Finally something different than Kundig Style
Simply WOW! one of the best projects ,,,Excellent job ,,,,Love to you from Cairo.
So glad to see that you're featuring projects from the states recently also!!
I absolutely love this house. The dark interiors is so well done. The different choices that show the owner’s personality also ironically adds color and light to the place. Amazing property.
Now I realize what kind of minimalism I am really into.
It's so pretty and aesthetically pleasing.
the thought and level of blended styles in this home must be in the top ten of the channel that I have seen, and i have been a follower for years. Even the record player is covered in marble
Wow this home is unbelievable beauty
FANTASTIC channel, Thank You!
One of the most amazing houses I’ve seen.
A very special and personal place. It has not one bit of cookie cutter derivatives, but still recycled materials adding to the vibe
I like it. I like the floor a lot. It suits them for sure. Very particular about what they like.
Blown away is an understatement 😯. Wow this is a gorgeous home !
beautiful house. shame i appreciate it so much but knowing i could probably never be able to afford one. happy for the owners fullfilling their dreams, great work, great house.
What a creative space. Breathtaking... Love the puppy.
So many great ideas, thanks for showing.
Stunning home! Very moody and luxurious. Bravo!
Wow, I just everything about the house. Would move in right away 🙂 Well done and have a good time living there.
The old house at the property is valued at 2.7 million at zillow, so the current house is around 3-4 million probably. Sharing this kind of info would make the channel better than it already is .)
You don't have to known the land value to understand it's not an inexpensive home. Their choice of finishing materials makes it very clear it's a high-end home. But the success of the design is not just in the quality of materials but their SPECIFIC choices in laying color, texture, lighting (natural and artificial) as well as their art collection. The best part is that when you see the home, you see them - their taste, their interests/hobbies, etc. it's not a page out of a catalog.
@@AB-ol5uz We all know they are not inexpensive homes, I'm aware of that. I just want to know how much it costs, how much the renovation specifically costs, and I'm bet I'm not the only one who enjoys the channel but misses that info. Just a fact: Grand Designs always mentions the price at the end... so there's that.
This might actually be my favorite house ever showcased on this channel
A home after my own heart! Love the dark palette, the wood, the flagstone. Love the organic feel. A welcome departure from the soulless white-grey open box that we find all over the place in North America.
really soulless white-grey - so I'm guessing you've actually "seen" the color of souls - interesting - what if there is no color at all?
Brilliant. Love the exterior color with the cedar, beautiful. I noticed how original the neighboring homes are. How has your home been received?🤔🤣 it truly sets itself apart. Well done.✌🏽
Exciting 🎉
A truly exciting and original work. I love that it is in a sense, a remodel yet totally transformed. So many great details. And the love of and obvious devotion to vinyl is so cool. Thanks for designing and building this great home and sharing on this great platform.
absolutely stunning. one of the most creative spaces i've seen
FANTASTIC LOCATION+AMAZING HOUSE= HAPPY LIFE
OHHHH. GLAMOURRRR❤❤❤❤
Fabulously COOL 🖤
Oh. My. Goodness.
Amazing!
fan-freaking-tastic... congratulations to you both and everyone else involved in bringing this porject to life. BRAVO!
Now this is an original design. It's not a blown-out or smaller version of an existing brand of home. Their placement on the lot, the screening, skylights, use of materials, etc. all create a home that looks PERSONAL, Interesting, Beautiful, Unique, Quality, Intentional, Layered, Comforting/Stimulating, and Inviting to be in. We need more of this - not just this style of architecture/interior design but for people to be more willing to expose their own personal interests to personalize the home vs. adhering to a marketing standard.
This house is damn beautiful. 👍
Beautiful house I wish to have a house like this for myself one day!
wow!完美
Beautiful home. Love all the old stereo art.
Молодцы ребята 👏 Уважение такой красоте
Fantastic. Fun.
Unreal. Obviously a custom home but i feel like this aesthetic can be done in a way thats not so cookie cutter compared to many monopoly homes. But just gorgeous.
Master piece!!!
Coooool house! Love the music themed art- the tapes and minidiscs! I bet there are some cracking records there as well. ❤ from Australia.
Guys, this is how you work with dark colors... Many architects could probably learn from that.
Wow it's beautiful and an amazing departure from the mainly white on white color palettes found in similar websites for indoor-outdoor... both of you have great taste. PS. you're lucky not to have to contend with snakes and mozzies like us in the tropics....
Oops - there are definitely lots of snakes in them thar hills of california
@@toodlesoops7761 😱😱😱 gosh who clears them? Is there a pest control service that works on call?
Just wow!
Very unique to their taste, but it is a fabulous home.
Highly inspirational.
It is more of a 60s vibe rather than a Japanese architecture inspiration. Perhaps due to the existing house style and finishes.
Ive always admired but rarely actually ever wanted to live in one of these homes. Until now.
Great - thanks
I like it.. 😊😊
But I'm wondering if this could be with home plan... 🤔
I wish i had the courage to use that much black on my interior.
This house is very thoughtfully done . Def bit cookie cuter ! Not sure xsctiy my style . But it def it an art piece through and through ! Love what they’ve done to it !
I love everything but the kitchen.
🤩🤩🤩
😍
home 😐
home, japan inspired 😯
The amount of vinyl… my god
Who is the maker mini disk portrait ?
The tape art as well?
there nothing related with japan , maybe only the floor but therenot gold color (Kintsugi)
Everything looks extremely dark. It feels like a Japanese horror movie. I feel like Sadako is about to pop out.
U A L!
Plies work sri lanka
I see barely anything Japanese-inspired in this. It looks California Modernist.
I like the videos of this channel a lot! until the last ones. the music is so loud . the interviews are hardly to follow. just a tip for your editor.
Everything is dark
I wish the video was less about appliances and showed the actual spaces better specifically the bathrooms and the living spaces. I think it is a beautiful home but the video doesnt do it justice.
the appliance manufacturer is the sponsor of the videos.
Any insects and animals in Australia ? No screens on doors and windows ... snakes in the living rooms and flies everywhere .. No Thanks
This is LA
As an australian building house's in newport beach for 50 yrs this is so typically american, as hard as they have tried still clunky heavy and unsophisticated, these architect, need to take a trip to Oz or NZ or Marbella Spain to learn how it's really done.
Another reminder…We are poor.
Did she just say "growing up in Taiwan, Japan"?! 😂
"growing up in Taiwan, Japan was a major influence"
@@ChristiePriem so it's like growing up in Taiwan and japan, right?!
No. While growing up in Taiwan, she was influenced by Japanese style.
@@ChristiePriem ahh okay now I got it.
@@diefluse it's kind of a weird sentence!
It's stifled and suffocating in masculinity like a stark dungeon where souls die.
I believe you missed the opportunity of fruit, flowers, passion and light of the living.
No one would believe a woman lives there.
Yes, they would. All of the plants in every room??? All of the big windows bring in a lot of light - plus they have artificial light, it just wasn't on in most of the spaces.
Because women must have softer preferences??
Confused mess
That's the genius of it, it is representative of real humans :)
What's confusing about it?
Amazing as always… in your channel.
Didn’t like the music this time thou /:
Nice video but the music is disturbing. Can you maybe put on lower volume or use less present kind of music?
