  • Believing that architecture is about creating something permanent, Butler Armsden Architects built Valley of the Moon Retreat as a beautiful modern home that is everlasting. After remodelling the client’s city dwelling, the architect was tasked with creating a family holiday residence in Glen Ellen, a place the clients could retreat to and escape city living. As one turns onto the narrow driveway, the house tour begins with a picturesque trip to the modern abode. The architecture and interior design enables the family to create lasting memories whilst being connected to nature, which completely surrounds the beautiful modern home.
Nestled between the trees, the residence blends seamlessly into the landscape. However, as the house tour reveals, the façade of the beautiful modern home is relatively closed off until the breezeway is opened up to expose the valley beyond. As one walks through the breezeway, the large courtyard opens up to expansive vistas of the valley beyond, with a pool that offers an additional reflection of the natural surrounds. The architect ensures the family can either entertain and find moments of respite by introducing separate cabin-like pavilions that can be opened up or closed. Emphasising this sense of separation is the main building, which can accommodate both large and smaller gatherings without feeling as though there is too much space to spare.
The main pavilion hosts the kitchen and dining room, which have both been designed to hold everything the owners require. Upstairs is the master suite and office that has been designed to make one feel as though they are living in the tree canopies. Built just before the California wildfires, the fate of the residence was unknown to the architect and owners for some time. However, since the beautiful modern home was built with a metal roof and board-formed concrete plinth, the residence’s timber structure survived. Located on 37 acres, the residence remains functional, durable and connected to the landscape.

This feels, looks and functions like the "Little Black Dress" -- classic, elegant, versatile.
The treatment and use of the wood to blend with the landscape and age with it is an exquisite design aspect. Having a metal roof in order to make it low maintenance, cantilevered bunk beds, swimming pool that is also.a.reflecting pool, are all showstopper details that are breathtakingly refined in function meeting form.
The human desire to make things permanent is.natural but there is nothing natural in permanence of form; all attempt to circumvent this is.folly.
    Wonderful architecture. Thank you.

Yes, most families on the planet inhabit spaces smaller than that and in developed cities this is an entire studio

Wow, hard to believe that this house went through a wildfire and survived as well as it did! I am just amazed at how good it looks. Perhaps the boards were already like that, or perhaps they were scorched a bit, but overall, it still looks wonderful.

I love how they achieved this feel of a cabin in the woods for a fairly large house, a compound even. The wood siding, the views framed by the windows, the nature looking into the house - all of that creates this atmosphere of a small cabin in the woods, yet allows for a large, modern house inside.

The videos are usually so satisfying from this channel, but the soundscapes were off for this one. They were disconnected from the location, environment, etc., a bit too Texan, if that makes sense. I guess you can’t win them all. 🤷🏾‍♂️

The premises are already wrong. Architecture should start with how to dispose, reuse, recover, and NOT permanently, because nothing is permanent, especially buildings.

Just don't think that architect's accent is American! In fact she said that she is Italian, right? Just put the house in California, Alex.

Sorry guys, this one’s a yawn. Prefer the Aussie and NZ architecture. American design is just so bland and uninspired in comparison. Not really sure why.

I agree… and I’m American. 😮 There’s something either sterile, over the top, copy cat, or soulless about the American projects in general, but there were elements of this home that I did enjoy seeing.

Why are American houses still big on gas cookers? Watched a couple of million dollar American house tours and they were all gas.
