I saw a video where they were successful with sour patch. I have never had luck with them. If you have the newer model with candy mode, I'd try it. If you try it , let me know how it goes. 😃
I am considering getting a freeze dryer. The complaint is the cost. But I weigh the cost compared to savings. I believe the savings outweigh the costs. I appreciate you freeze drying different foods. Gives me a heads up of what I might do or not. Thank you for sharing your experience.
I love mu freeze dryer. Initially, the cost is high. There is so much you can do with the foods. If i have stashes of food that will be great for long term . I use the food regularly too. It's great to open a bag of something I made a year ago, and it is ready and still awesome in a very short time. Nice for a single person for quick and well planned meals. I also love it because of the fun I have with some of the foods that I have freeze dried. I plan to get a second one in a large size.
Different brands of candy freeze dry differently. What brand of gummy bears did you try? Also, you can powder up some of those and throw them on ice cream or popcorn....
yes, they do dry differently. the softer ones do better! I used Albanese. Cool tip on the ice cream toppings!! I will definitely be trying that. You could possibly make your own flavored ice with it too. yum!
i have a 5 year old unit. i do not have a candy setting. i just put them in on the normal automatic setting. Is there anyone else with a newer unit that can help with this?
I just got a freeze dryer (June 9, 2023) and it does have what is called "candy mode". The unit has to have the updated software the company installs. When you turn on the Harvest Right, the top right part of the home screen should have v5.x.19 or higher. Mine says v5.4.24. I haven't tried it yet, but from reading the owner's manual and their recipe book, it looks like a candy batch should only take 2 hours from start to finish because there is "very little water" in typical candy. There are settings you have to modify in the start (heat setting goes up to 135 to 150 degrees and it calls it candy mode the instant you raise the temp, and extra dry time becomes THE ONLY dry time candy modes needs. 2 to 3 hours of that extra (and only) dry time is usually enough time. BUT, if you want specific instructions on modifying your settings on an older model of freeze dryer, call the Freeze Right customer service for those instructions.
thx. i know mine needs updated. i am intimidated to do it. That's the reason I haven't. It would make sense for 2 hour time frame instead of what mine takes. I guess I need to just take the leap of faith and do the upgrade.
I did gummy bears last night . I have the new 7 tray xl harvest right with candy mode . The gummy bears came out a mess after only 3.5 hours . Please if you have any advice for me let me know I did mine at 150 degrees should I of froze first cause the site doesn’t recommend that . Let me know what you think

cool. that may be easier for me to do than mess with trying to put it on a drive and such. i have technical difficulties. lol. I'd rather just pay for the drive and go from there. thank you!!
No. i haven't gotten around to downloading the software. Soon, hopefully!! I bet those are awesome freeze-dried. I wished it would have worked the first time!!
So , do you feel the candy mode is worth installing the update for? Did you notice any big changes with that update? I am still procrastinating on updating it.
If u didn't warm them up prior to freeze dry that might have been reason for not blowing up. I recently learned that myself & it made a difference

I DID notice that the dollar
store gummies didn't puff as much as the Albanese ones did. Someone else said the fresher candy works better.

I did sour patch too and they didn't work. It's the only candy that didn't freeze dry.. I used the candy mode🤷🏼♀️
