I can't complain about the Twin I Beam. I bought a new1983 F100, and I liked it so much, I'm still driving it today, 40 years later. Mine tracks well enough, and I've taken it on 1,000 mile trips, which I've enjoyed immensely. Plus, it has never needed an alignment. Currently it has 300,000 miles without any major work. It has the AOD transmission coupled to the famous 300 CID six. I routinely got 20mpg highway when it was young. It is a bit less today, but average speeds are much higher today.
Regarding acceleration in overdrive, no it doesn't. At least not below 70 mph. The engine is simply turning too slow. That is the drawback of the AOD. Unlike most automatics with a lockup torque converter, the AOD simply bypasses the torque converter completely in 3rd and 4th. That results in a huge change in available torque between the gears, since the torque converter isn't there to act as a bridge between the two ratios. My solution is to drive mine as a semi-automatic. I never let the transmission choose 4th on its own. My goal is to hit 50 years without an overhaul. As of this writing, I only have 9 1/2 years to go.

Nice truck and looking forward to your future videos of the truck. I think the truck looks great as is but it really doesn't come across as is as having a 4 x 4 look/stance. First thing I'd do is get the exhaust routed to the back and add quieter mufflers and maybe lose the headers as they can't be helping the 5.0 very much. I think lose the running boards and and put a set of chrome tubular running boards, just cab length too. You also nailed it mentioning that a bigger set of tires as filling the wheel wells more would help the appearance of the truck. With the bigger tires, say 33 x 10 15's, a set of not too wide wheel flares, just plain black would work without the big nuts showing. Tires, Tube running boards and the wheel flares would let everyone know its a 4 x 4. When I first saw the truck at the beginning of the video at first glance I was thinking it was 4 x 2 until I saw the 4 x 4 decal on the box. As far as a value well that's your expertise with you used car business but I spent 25 years in the car business and still buy/sell a few a year so try to keep current on pricing. I'm thinking the truck is a 16/18K CDN. truck. Low mileage and overall condition short box 4 x4 are the big pluses and very very desirable but the 5.0 engine kind of holds it back bit as well not being a Lariat and no Power Windows or Locks. If people think my pricing is to high then I say go find another as we both know you can't and a new one would be 75K or more. Sorry for the long response but wanted you to know the reasons for my conclusions of the truck.

He broke a part trying to put it back on. But the issue of it not running right now is not a idle issue but once he presses the gas and its put under a load it dies out. Any ideas ?

I love Fords, all I've owned is Ford trucks since high school, currently only a 2011 F-150 5.0L FX4 super cab that I ordered from the factory when I was 23 in 2011. That said, my first truck back in those days a 1990 F-150 5.0L with this AOD transmission and a twin I-beam suspension. I always felt the AOD went into overdrive way to early as well. If I was driving that truck anywhere south of 50 mph I would just drive around in (D) and lockout the overdrive gear, because just like this truck here did it'll shift into overdrive as low as 30mph and completely bog the engine down, using drive instead of overdrive remedies that problem. Overdrive in this transmissions is pretty much useless for anything other than unloaded highway cruising, however for that one thing that it's good it, it's very good at. My friend at the time had a nearly identical 1987 F-150 5.0L but his truck had the C6 3-Speed non overdrive auto. His truck was always screaming at highway speeds which here in Texas vary between 65mph and 75mph but realistically most people go 80+. His truck at those speeds sounded like it was going to blow up and single digit gas mileage was normal for him, he may have seen 10mpg or 11mpg on a good day, however my AOD truck would get 13mpg or so in stop and go traffic and I saw as high as 17mpg on longer highway stints as long as I kept my speed under 75mph.
In regards to the twin I-Beam suspensions, I never had much issue with alignment or anything in the time I owned that truck, maybe I just got lucky, but it seemed to track just as good as in control arm Chevrolet trucks of that era that I drove, however I did notice the control arm GM trucks did tend ride more compliantly than my I-Beam Ford. If I were building one of these trucks up for myself I would do away with the twin traction beam suspension and put a dana 60 solid axle up front and call it a day personally.

Yup. We live in the rust belt of Canada.
My brother has had a 2004 F150 for a long time. He loves it. I don't. I have to fix it when it craps out.
It was undercoated regularly with gooey, oily undercoating.
One day the frame looked great. Next day it was shot. Gone. Toast.
I grafted on a different frame from the cab back.
He still loves it. I still don't.
I had a Ranger that the frame totally disintegrated in front of my eyes. It too was undercoated with oily stuff.
I have an older Mazda truck for a plow truck. It was a Ford/Mazda joint venture. The frame is great. Well.. it was a month ago. I better check it!
    Cheers, Jason.

This brings back memories. My 95 F250 XL 4x4 reg cab long bed. Loved how it looked, had an exhaust bent up just like this one.. 2 40 series mufflers tucked sideways fit perfect and was way to loud lol. It cost me a fortune to keep going.. everything broke and repeated. Bought with 45k on it and walked away from it at 74k 😢 after the 3rd trans. 2 different sets of exhaust manifolds.. one of them came off in 3 pieces, pulled the engine because it’s the only way to replace the rotted oil pan, front end exploded once. Sad thing is it was a clean truck I actually took care of. Maybe it was a lemon but I don’t see many obs of that specific make on the road anymore. Also chasing the steering wheel and then way the front wheels would camber out ugh! I’d have it aligned an two weeks later it would be cambered outward smh

The new trucks in 2023 are not just expensive, they are purposefully made so complex that its difficult for a DIY guy to work on his own truck. They want you to either have a dealer mechanic work on it to help the dealers make some more profit, or they want you to sell off some of the parts and have it crushed so you buy a new truck. These trucks in good condition and having low miles are bringing big prices, and selling fast.

Original engine of 240K miles, It's showing it age, right before the pandemic I change out all of the sensors. Transmission had it overhauled once. Still purrs like a kitten. Oil change every 3 months regardless of mileage. I've been ask if I'm selling it, and how much, I did state once of 5K and that was before sky rocket prices. Now if asked 10K is my price.

I think I'd look for a diesel to haul. I've got a 96 F250 extended cab, long bed, 4x4 with the 5.8L gas motor. It's a great truck and exactly what I wanted, that extra cab room makes a world of difference...but she doesn't have quite as much power as I'd like when towing. Takes a day and a half to get up to freeway speeds and doesn't have enough power to keep speed going up hill. It's not so bad with a light trailer, but pulling a 30' camper, expect to be happy doing 65 MPH at best and getting maybe 6 MPG while doing it. On the other hand, it will pull that trailer all day without a care in the world and other than the struggling over 55, you don't know the trailer is back there.
Towing aside, she drives like a truck. I've had a time or two where I've hit a not too large pot hole and the whole front of the truck jumps about a foot to the side. Guaranteed to put some brown in your shorts. Still love it.

Also it didn't have a/c or power windows, locks or power mirrors which made it somewhat awkward. Otherwise it was a good truck, very simple and straight forward and easy to work on, that's the beauty of these old trucks. Newer trucks have far too much technology built into them that most ppl don't use and when it breaks down your at the mercy of the dealerships in many cases for expensive repairs. I would gladly buy one of these older trucks if it were in good condition. As far as what I'd pay for it I'm not sure maybe $10-$15k?

@@OldeCarrGuy- I've never heard of oil based undercoating promoting rust (i.e. Fluid Film, Woolwax, or even those concoctions made with used engine oil.) The stuff I've heard that is no good is any undercoating that dries hard, like Ziebart or rubber based product, both which end up separating from the metal, forming voids that trap water and salt, dramatically accelerating rot, which doesn't make itself known until something fails spectacularly. Any good oil based undercoating will not dry out and will creep into crevices, keeping salt away from those areas. The only downside is having to reapply the stuff every year but but it's still better than the alternative. Living in Western NY where salt is on our roads up to five months out of the year, I wouldn't mind knowing what product was used on that truck.

I think I'd get along with the truck's owner, with that and the town car. Had the 95 TC, but now have 4 panthers 03-06 GM and TCs. and have the 96 OBS F250 for when I need to haul something.
Mine being a Michigan truck that was rode hard and put up wet, I'm really envious of how clean that thing is. Mine's got the rusted out cab corners and rockers. Still runs great and will haul anything you want it to.
On the trans, I'm not sure, but you might try banging on the dash a couple times. From time to time I get the OD light flashing and the trans not shifting right, caused by a poor connection to the module for the speed sensor in the cluster. I've taken it apart and cleaned it all a couple times, but it still acts up once in a while after taking a big bump. one good wack on the top of the dash over the cluster and it goes back to normal for another month or two.

Absolute best combo - 1995, oxford white, regular cab, xl trim, fiberglass tonneau, and blue interior. Haha!
Those dashes are notorious for breaking there. My truck was like that, pretty sure mom & dad's farm truck is broke there too. I believe CP Addict has a special bracket repair kit that is metal. The stock is a plastic mount.

Ultimate park ranger truck?? Ha purple faded tint. But then again I remember green, red and blue tint. I saw a lot of those trucks that were "pimped out" and not like the factory intended

@@OldeCarrGuy And we have a ton of unpaved roads but the car companies think Mexico doesn't need 4X4. The only 4X4 small SUV you can buy right now in Mexico is the RAV4. No other company even offers one. That is crazy.

I don't know... I paid $3K for my 96 F250 that was already completely rusted out when I got it, with 170K miles. That was the cheapest one I'd seen in a long time when I got it, just before car prices went stupid. These days, I'd be surprised to see that truck sell for less than $7500, and with the mileage and how clean it is, probably north of 10k.

its funny a guy that doesn't know what an automatic kickdown is revewing why he doesn't like how a 30 year old truck isn't as nice as the new one he owns. like bro really?
