Great review. I actually like the A7iv colors better. The A7iv has clear image zoom too. I set it to the dpad for my a7siii and A7iv and it works like a charm.
My girlfriend and I both use a7iv for shooting live music sessions with controlled lighting. Thinking about adding a 3rd camera and I’m going back and forth on another a7iv or an fx3. Do you have any thoughts or opinions?
Great review! Love both my FX3 and A7siii. Almost sold my A7siii and was going to buy two a74s but for video features alone it wouldn’t be worth it. But for hybrid shooting the a74 is a no brainer
The A7IV is a beast of a camera and I’m so glad Sony released it. It has identical video quality to the expensive FX3/A7Siii (with a few minor, but very manageable compromises) while still having an amazing 33mp sensor for professional photography. It’s literally the perfect hybrid camera. I’ve used my A7IV with the screen open on both 4K 30/60fps for 3-4 hours and haven’t had any overheating issues at all. The camera doesn’t even get hot, just moderately warm. But, obviously the FX3/A7Siii are dedicated video tools so those make the most sense for dedicated filmmakers. Still though, the A7IV is an insane value. Best of both worlds 👌 Great review man!
Hey John I have a question! How has the rolling shutter been for you? Has it been an issue in any situation.. if so I would like to know (: I’m considering purchasing the A7iv later this year and I still haven’t found any videos doing any real world shooting that involves moving the camera constantly or recording fast moving objects ://
@@shooterco. I’m late, but the rolling shutter is pretty intense. I haven’t had any issues as I don’t do any quick whip pans and such, but I can see it being a problem for filmmakers if they’re filming an action scene or something. For most tame corporate and commercial work, I think it’s fine :)
The biggest downgrade of the a7iv is the cropped 4k 60fps and probably the rolling shutter, otherwise it's almost perfect, amazing in low light too! I still prefer my a7siii for video though.
i've been comparing the a7 iv to my fx3 and with the same settings, even at 640 iso wich is supposed to be fx3 base iso, the noise is much more noticeable in the fx3 and the a7 iv also beat it all the way in focus test. i'm so disapointed and i can't understand why the fx3 doesn't stand up to the a7 iv...

I like the image on the FX3 - from the first time I saw Potatoe Jet's A7S3 review, I fell in love with that image. Not sure what it is but you can see it in the trees behind you when comparing here with the A7IV. Maybe I am just talking rubbish. Only other camera I have seen recently at the 'consumer pricepoint' with this quality is the GH6 and the C70. That being said, if I had to fork out for one atm, I'd go with the A71V due to its greater all round versatility.
i think a7IV s screen must be sharper thatswhy you think the camera is sharper. on my big screen monitor fx3 is definitely noticeably sharper on every scene. EDIT: after returning from outside, the side by side videos, now s7IV looks noticeably sharper. so i have no idea now whats going on.
If you do any kind of action shooting, the A7 IV will present a ton of rolling shutter. You have to take that into consideration when making your decission.
Great video, but what i was looking for was ability to shoot at 10 bit at 120 fps on A7iV where as in FX3 we are limited to shoot at 60 fps only for 10 bit
I just picked up my FX3 not long ago and LOVE the cam. How do you feel about 240FPS S&Q? Do you feel the 1080P is too soft in terms of sharpness vs say the 120fps S&Q 4K? Ive also been in deep thought if I wanna spend the coin on the type A. The v90 card seems to do pretty close to all I need… but maybe its worth it at least in a 160gig… eh money money money…
Never thought a7iv will come this close to image quality when compared to FX3. Very impressive. But still what FX3 can do in a serious work environment is amazing and kills it.
Great video man. I still don't see how Sony includes this camera in their "Cinema" line. I would already own this camera if it had two crucial features; shutter angle and "True 24p"(hz) 4096x2160 17:9 cine mode. Just a deal breaker for me. Keep up the good work!

I’m surprised Sony hasn’t already added those features from the A74 to the A7S 3 and the FX3. I hope they hurry up with that, it just seems odd lol

What focus mode where you using for this? It looks like the eye isn't in focus on the a7 IV. I've seen that some of the suffer from an eye focus issue where it ends up focusing on the nose or eye brow. The the FX3 looks sharper on the eye. But the nose and nose ring looks to be the sharpest. Have you tested yours to see if it does the eye focus correctly?
I have a Sony a6400 and its 4k is good...on par with my a7iii but I want something better-I also shoot on 1080p for some clients who just want the raw footage (interviews etc) and CANNOT edit 4k footage so I must shoot in 1080p. After researching a bit I learned that many new 4k cameras record CRAPPY 1080p! a shocker! my a6400 is one...the a7iii is not great either. Do you know if the FX3 has good 1080p? I guess it would have to record in APSC mode too? I don't understand why the quality of 1080p has to be lower in modern cameras. It still used by 90% or more of viewers! I shoot in 4k and edit in 1080 as long as I'm doing the editing but not always the case. In any case ,I just wonder if you have tried comparing this 2 cameras in 1080p. I like the FX30/FX3 cinema style but the FX3 is a lot of more money...argh!
