The A7IV overheats FOR SURE when filming at 4k60p for extended periods even in cool temps, or in the summer heat after a short period of time. And yes, even with the mandatory "High Temp" setting turned on in the settings. This is the sole reason we're immediately selling our 3 A7IV cameras and have purchased 3 replacement FX30 cameras. In about 30 weddings this year, we've had at least one of our 3 cameras overheat and stop 4 different times (even in cool rooms) and at least one camera flash the overheating warning maybe 15 or so times over the year. Otherwise, it's a great camera. Our A7siii has never overheated when filming at 4k60 and I trust the FX30 won't either.

@@Panther-no not really. Cameras don’t vary enough due to manufacturing process to have such a degree of difference that one specific model would vary so much. As an A74 & A1 owner (video use 100%) it’s hard to believe that I am so excited about the prospect of receiving this humble APSC camera next month! Why not FX3? True utility and versatility on the road requires lighter lenses, USB streaming, focus breathing comp, focus mapping and 6K downsampling! Sony should develop an 8K APSC FX video shooter for under $9K with GM fast lenses and higher dynamic range.

Kinda frustrating that you can't record in 6k. I wouldn't use that most of the time, but if I wanted to be able to crop bigtime, track an object, or use a color picker, the 6k footage not downsampled would work much much better. Using the GH6 in 5.7k all those mentioned above ( also green screen is much easier to get a good pick) work without fuss compared to the internally downsampled footage. I do agree that this camera is perfect for the majority of content creators, but hopefully it improves a lot with firmware updates. Could be even better!

For years I used APS-C and always dreamed of having a full-frame camera. My first full frame was the A7III and now I have the A7IV. I have purchased a small collection of full-frame lenses so my use case is not leading me towards the Fx30. If anything it would be the FX3, as I am sold on full frame and the sony super 35 mode gives me that extra punch that I got from APS-C. As stated earlier when I had APS-C I dreamed of a full-frame body. I don't find myself dreaming of APS-C at all.

@@switchunboxing To be honest it was my use case. Before Sony I had a Caon 7D mark III and the first lens I purchased for it was the Canon 24-105. That was a full-frame lens and at the time I was shooting my kids sports. The 1.6 crop factor was great for the extra reach. So as time went on I purchased a few more lenses which were all full frame based on the amount of FF available vs APS-C. When I switched to Sony I was able to still use all of those Canon lenses using the Sigma mc-11 adapter. The added bonus was that Sony FF now made all my old Canon glass wider, plus the added bonus of the super35 mode of extra reach.

I am a Sony APSC camera user for work, because the price rate here is quite low for photo and video work (at least for my city area), so it is very difficult for me to use a fullframe camera, realistically, the payback will be very long if I invest in a fullframe camera and the lenses😂. This FX30 might be a good step for me with features that are futureproof and can be used for a very long time before needing to upgrade the camera again, and of course without having to spend more on lenses. Thank you for the good review and field testing, it really helped me in making decisions. I'm currently using the a6000 and a6400, and plan to trade my a6000 for the FX30, so the a6400 for photos, and the FX30 for video I think it can meet all my needs.🤔

Timecode feature is cool but again, we don’t really shoot for Netflix and if you need to sync, do it manually as its easy. Most of us don’t shoot 4K in 120 all the time. The tally light situation can be solved by being attentive to details and checking the back of the camera to know you are rolling. Will I buy it? Nope. One important point you've looked over is that the A7IV has a S35 crop mode. And in that mode, the rolling shutter is actually slightly better than the FX30. So overall that tips the hat in A7IV's favour as it can do FF with better low-light (albeit with poor RS) and you can switch it to S35 if you want extra reach and low RS. Best of both worlds. And its also a good hybrid cam with strong photo capabilities. I don't understand the hype around the FX30 honestly: no EVF, no mechanical shutter, non stacked APS-C sensor. I don't even see a detail increase in between it and the non oversample 4K from the A7S3/FX3/FX6 sensor. I'm not an A7IV user by the way but I honestly think that the A7IV is better value when compared to the FX30. Compared to the FX3 though, FX30 wins hands down in the value department.

    • @finnharvor6773

Good points about the A7iv’s crop mode. I’ve sometimes shot in that mode for the simple reason that I have an APSC zoom (the 18 105 for my crop sensor bodies, but am loathe to buy a ff zoom for several reasons: cost, weight, and little need for that category of lens on a regular basis. So I’ve shot sometimes with that lens on a ff body and was pleased with the results - only realizing later that the footage was also devoid of rolling shutter. It’s an economical yet practical workaround.

I shoot real estate, gym promos, weddings, interviews etc all in one for my small business Diesel Media Productions.
You have been a very large help with getting the right information I needed. Especially when it came to selling my A7iii to upgrade to the IV. I am hybrid and have only needed one camera. However as I am getting busier, more requests. I am in need of a second camera for video purposes. I personally utilize the crop mode in 4K 60 a lot. Especially using my 14-24 2.8 sigma that I mainly bought for real estate. I use it a lot now for quick reels and cropping in gives me a good range in the areas I needed it.
Looking forward to adding the FX30, I am far from worried about the crops, as if you have right lenses and it’s a 2nd camera you should be perfectly fine. I believe you can only complain if you’re trying to have the exact same framing/ depth of feild in two shots but I believe the purpose is to have two different looks when doing that. So I don’t see why all these people been complaining about it.

I don't know why people continue to stick with 24p, this boggles my mind lol..
Every one wants to be or mimic Cinematic Shooting, and yes the lighting and stuff looks great how ever if you notice all of them rather shoot in 4K 24P, which to me is dumb, yes they want to mimic that cinematic look, and all but the reason why major movie productions from a long time ago up until now, used 24 frames per second only because of 2 reasons, #1 knowing the movies will hit people's televisions, and #2 also they was shooting 9MM expensive film so if they shot this in 24 fps it was cheaper because they used less film...
But the main reason #1 was knowing the film will be displayed on Home Televisions one day..
And back then Televisions and broadcasting that on televisions, it was not possible to use frame rates higher then 24P.
But when digital came out and then people had HD tv's and then blueray cd's they still was shooting in 24P because many have not shifted over to Full Digital yet.
    Now they have,
Example the Movie the Hobbit, was filmed on a RED weapon Camera, shot at 4K 48P then 60P for the fast camera pans, the reason for this was, #1 because the dramatic landscape scenes and the panning they did was quite fast, if they shot this in 24P they would not be able to pan the cameras and move them as fast as they did, because it would be choppy and skip..
the higher your frame rates are the faster you can pan your camera with out chunky skipping.
They would have never been able to sustain the faster camera movements they did shooting at 24P or even 30P, so they shot this fully in 48P. and 60P
And the film still looked great and cinematic... Most people don't realize they shot this entire movie at 48P with exception to the camera pans, they didn't visually notice this..
Any experienced cinematographer though would have know this because of the fact that the camera pans they did would no way be possible at 24p and look as smooth as it did.
Here is a link to that in 4k
    ua-cam.com/video/zw_XKWBE_ss/v-deo.html
Even if you haven't known it, potentially every film you've ever seen has been shown at 24 FPS. This is the industry standard frame rate that dates back decades.
But how did 24 FPS become standard for films? Is it really the best way to deliver a film? We're going to explore how 24 FPS came to be and what the future might hold.
Early silent films did not have a consistent frame rate, generally falling between 14 and 26 FPS. That's because cameras recorded by someone literally cranking a handle. The faster they cranked, the faster the frame rate.
that consistency was set at 24 FPS. It was chosen by Warner Bros. and their sound film system called Vitaphone, for their release of The Jazz Singer in 1927.
Film stock is expensive. Recording at a higher frame rate costs more. As such, filmmakers needed a standard that was cheap, but also achieved that persistence of vision. 24 FPS also allowed for that fidelity between picture and sound.
There's another benefit to 24 FPS. It's neatly divisible by numbers like 2, 3, and 4, which means that it can be quickly calculated how many frames go into half a second (12), a third of a second (8), and a quarter of a second (6). It makes editing easier.
Some early attempts include Night of Dreams (1978) and New Magic (1983), which were both directed by Douglas Trumbull and at 60 FPS.
When it comes to modern examples, the choices are of equally slim pickings. The Hobbit trilogy from Peter Jackson, starting with An Unexpected Journey in 2012, used 48 FPS. Later, director Ang Lee used 120 FPS for Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk in 2016 and Gemini Man in 2019. But the fast camera pans was filmed in 60P
However, only certain theaters actually showed the higher frame rate versions. As such, even if you saw these films in theaters, you may have seen the converted 24 FPS version anyway. But the filming in 60P was needed for the fast camera pans. so being downgraded from 60 p to 24 didn't bother the fast camera pans.
    because it was already capture..
When The Hobbit was released, many were skeptical. Writing in Rolling Stone, Peter Travers said that "the movie looks so hyper-real that you see everything that's fake about it".
This is a common complaint about a higher frame rate. By applying more realistic and smoother motion, it becomes harder to suspend your disbelief. Sets look like sets, costumes like costumes.
It's true that it's easier to shoot higher than 24 FPS now. In fact, your smartphone can do that and more. However, there are still costs associated with a higher frame rate. It uses more storage space, which in turn needs bigger capacity devices and more backup space.
Most of all, 24 FPS remains because it's tradition. It's what films look like. That will, change with new generations of filmmakers,
because the only reason for 24P is that old cinematic look, wanna be movie makers want to mimic movies but 24P is NOT what makes a good movie scene it's the color and the cinematography and acting and story and all that.
There is no real reason to shoot at 24P any more, in fact tons of fast action scenes have been always shot at high frame rates, such as star wars, Charlie's Angels, the Newer moves not the tv shows,
many martial art's scenes as well even in the older days Bruce Lee movies shot scenes at high frame rates because of the fact Bruce Lee's moves was too fast..
many action scenes was shot at high frame rates even in the 1980's some scenes was shot at 10,000 fps for the slow motion scenes, or else it would look bad.
So Today many Move's are shot in 48 FPS to 60Fps even in the entire movie.
Depending on the movie to withstand the fast action and camera pans.
the titanic was shot at 48 fps,
inland empire was shot at 60fps
    Aquarela was shot at 96fps
Gemini Man was shot at 120 fps
here is a list of them films that was shot in high frame rates if you don't believe me and you never noticed it.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_with_high_frame_rates
People need to get off the 24p it's slow it's chunky and looks like shit in my Opinion.
people need to step up to today's technology and realize the 24p is not needed only needed back in the day,
Shooting in 24P Does not make you closer to being a professional cinematographer or movie maker, it just doesn't..
24p was only used because back in the stone age of filming and needed to be at that frame rate to work.
Shooting today in 24 P in my opinion makes you look like a wanna be cinematographer or movie maker, it makes you look dumb.

The FX30 is what I've been looking for for a long time. I will miss the viewfinder and ND filters. But I guess I'll go with it, since Sony obviously has no plans for an AX-800.
A lot of people deal with depth of field, but for home video it's good to see the background as well.
And for special cases when I really want to separate the foreground from the background, sony has its glasses.

It is different than with cameras like AX100 or AX700.

One more plus for the A7IV is it has variable shutter, which means you can eliminate flicker from LED lights and projectors. This feature is indispensable when shooting video at an unknown location. Sometimes you can reduce flicker by setting shutter to 1/50 or 1/60, depending on which country you live in, but sometimes you need micro control over shutter in order to fully eliminate it. The FX6, A7IV and A1 have variable shutter. The FX3, FX30 and A7sIII do not. I was doing a 3 camera shoot a few days ago with my FX6, A7IV and A7sIII, when during a test rehearsal I noticed the stage lighting was flickering really badly. I was able to micro adjust the shutter on the FX6 and A7IV to eliminate it, but not on the A7sIII. I ran out and bought another A7IV to save the shoot. A7sIII has now been demoted to my D cam.

Also, it has very high magnification ratio and is very affordable. Though nobody has tested it, Tamron's zooms have been so stellar recently that I'm fine trusting them on this one. You can always punch in with a little bit of Clear Image Zoom or crop mode to get more range out of the 20-40mm, too.

The A7iii is also a low light power house when filming in 4K because of the downsampled 6K in high iso cause grain is so small

Somewhat random question, but are there differences in how well these cameras would work with green screens? Right now I am using my old a6500 for green screen work, and I've tested the a6000 vs a6500 and the a6500 does a much better job with coloring along edges of subjects compared to the a6000, which makes keying out the green much easier. I use an a7iv for all my other work, but I'm curious if getting the fx30 to replace my a6500 would be worth it or if the quality difference would be minimal.

4:03, Nah c'mon not only depth of field. FX30:
    - More pink in the skin tones
    - More contrast
    - Less detail (both in the skin, and sharpness in the beard and the hat)

I wish every camera that can shoot decent video came with the screw mounts either side of the hotshoe! I've always wanted to put a top handle on my stills cameras, but there's no way I'm putting that stress on just the hotshoe, and a cage just always seems more hassle than it's worth, especially when shooting mostly stills. Nice job, thanks!

Jason, for me, as a twitch streamer full time and for doing vlogs, what you recomend me to buy? i was very interessed on zv-e1 but i understood that is impossible to use it as a webcam for streams, Its the a7iv the best option? i can get a a7iv NEW for just 1800€

Hello from France!!! I'm sorry but this question arises if we haven't invested yet I think. ok it does not heat up and that is the only advantage it has over the sony A7IV and especially to say that it is a "cinema" camera. But honestly it's all commercial! a real cine camera has built-in nd filters, no autofocus, 4Kdci, global shutter....have to stop, A7IV has a crazy 24/25/30 full frame, focus map, iso much better than fx 30 and FX 3 because the climb is gradual and still largely usable even at 6400! and in addition he takes pictures for those who don't have the iphone 14 pro 🤣!! As for the 4K 120....please, double crop!!!!! I prefer to do 120 in 1080 full format in this case....
FX30 great for the price, but not better than anyone...just new to the range...people who want real cine camera have to buy fx6 like you🥹
Great job, I watch all your videos. In French : continue fréro, tu assures a fond!

the RED Komodo doesn't have built in ND filters. The Sony Venice and Venice 2 doesn't have Global shutter and neither do most if not all the Arri cameras and I consider these "real" cinema cameras

As always amazing video but that doesn't help me hahaha still don't know what I should get after your amazing review haha. Joke appart, thanks for putting this, now I'm 95% sure I want the A7IV. I'm apsc shooter, so the fx 30 is like a dream cam, but at the same time I really wanna go full frame as an hybrid shooter. But why not the fx30 to replace my 6600 later on. Thanks Jason, love your channel
