2017 E300, purchased with 20k miles on it. Went to Costco for shopping, walked out and car misfire like crazy. The Benz dealership is across the street from the Costco. Literally had them tow it across the street because I shut it off right away and refused to turn it back on. They had the car for 2 weeks. RINGLAND at cylinder 1 had failed. Not wrist pin. PISTON RING BOYS. Motor was removed and disassembled, repaired with new parts and reassembled. All at no cost of course, under warranty. Drove it for two years after that and now at 74k miles. Haven’t had to do anything to it at all aside from oil changes every 5k miles on the dot at the dealer. Very reliable. Oh and btw I am a BMW/Land Rover tech 😅🤣 This engine is GREAT.
Wrist pin noise can be detected as the engine is dropping in rpms when revved, almost sounds like a woodpecker. Most common in 2015 models, quite rare for 2016 models. At the dealer level we do a full bottom end rebuild, we replace the pistons, rods and wrist pins for all 4 cylinders. If you're experiencing a squeaky belt and have replaced the idler pulleys and tensioner with no success, back out the alternator bolts most of the way (do not remove them all the way) and give each one a good hit or two with a rubber mallet and retighten....the alternator can be slightly misaligned. No need to replace the engine air filter so frequently either, theres a pre-filter in the intake duct that traps alot of material and the shape of the duct prevents much material from reaching the filter. Mercedes recommended interval is 50k/5yrs and at that interval the filters usually aren't extremely dirty....you can change the filter with your spark plugs. Speaking of plugs, if you want to avoid having the plug boots get stuck in the head, warm the engine up a bit before removal and they'll slide out like butter. No real need to replace coil packs or boots when replacing plugs, only do so when one actually goes bad (easy to diagnose).
I do hear a ticking sound while driving low speed ..aside of that had the car for 4 years and now I have a p052e code, I usually work on cars but I hear I have to lift the left side of the engine to get to the sensor that needs to be replaced is there any other easy ways?
The coil boots rarely ever survive disassembly on higher mileage engines. By higher mileage, I mean 60k +. I've tried warming the engine, Heat guns you name it. I disconnect them from the coil body, and the boot is seized in the well real nice! When you pull them out, you will notice the boots are all discolored. Plus MB recommends them as part of a tune up. Also, in dusty ass south Florida, you ain't getting 50k out of an air filter out here. It will be filthy after 20k.
I've found at least a dozen documented cases online of 2016+ m274 engines having piston #1 failure at the ring lands. The wrist pin / piston cracking issues is definitely NOT confined to early motors.
Thank you for the in depth explanation. Have had an M274 in a 16 model sport package, purchased with 34k on odometer currently at 78k stress free miles (knock on wood). So far only had the auxiliary battery changed under warranty, serviced the transmission at dealer at 55k miles, plugs at 48k, all other normal A and B services.
I’ve been religiously running chevron 91 only since i purchased my 2018 E300 4matic at the dealer almost two years ago at 68,000 miles one owner. Now it’s at 110,000 miles and every 5K oil change it’s still running exactly the same way I had bought it. Smooth and quick. Just changed the PCV and thermostat as preventive and done the transmission at 100K and differential front and back. Oil changes makes a difference and so does gas. At 100,000 miles spark plugs changed spotless. Theplugs were not bad at all. Checked top of piston and it was clean
2017 E300 suffered #1 piston failure at about 110K miles, always well maintained and fed on Costco premium fuel. No help from Mercedes corporate. Had block replaced by my local mechanic. Still waiting to see if a class action suit comes forth. MB should have a recall on this engine. Also as everyone else, I have had numerous problems, but I was lucky enough to have them serviced through an extended warranty that I had purchased thru MB. Latest is a P0299 code...MB recommends replacing the entire turbo assembly...turns out the waste-gate vacuum actuator was bad, found one on Amazon, fixed problem. $40 dollars vs $4000.
This channel is right on. Very precise. Yes Turbo is bullet proof, but diaphragm goes bad. Yes PCV is big problem which cost 1-1.5K$ to customers. GLA is little different tho, GLA is much worse design it will cost you fortune. Otherwise nice smooth 2.0T engine with least problems and good power.
Sadly I'm currently into the Oil separator value assembly replacemen that you mentioned in the video... What a pain in my ass....here's what I've has to remove besides a bunch of the sensors... Intercooler, ECM and bracket, starter, engine mount + bracket, a thick rubber shield. I'm 5hrs into it and I've only at the point of being able to see one of the 3 bolts on the lower part of the assembly that connects to the lower part of the engine... I'll say it will take me 8-9hrs to finish this job. Mercedes Benz dealership wanted $1600 for parts and labor. If I were to do it again. I'd give them the money. This job is certainly one of the worst and pain in my ass fixes I've done in a long time. This should be a recall item AND/OR should be covered as part of the extended emissions warranty that comes with the car. TOTAL BS...
All the jrkoffs saying the 'diesel' sound is gudgeon knock are FoS. its a combo of powerful injectors and the high pressure pump, which runs at very high PSI. The pump housing is slightly oversized, and aluminium, which is why people often notice a temp dependency. In the US there are customers running m274 engines into the late 200k, some at 300k, which is 500,000km. The gudgeon pin issue was fully resolved by a redesign of the pins, which are larger dia since 2017. The subsequent, and fairly rare piston failures have all of them a common theme, incorrect RON fuels. Either too low for ECU knock corr, or abrupt RON changes before ECU adapts timing. Note the theme with piston that fails, oh yeah, startup stress from prem detonation. It's people running interference, purposefully or inadvertently through layman's guessing, advancing a claim the gudgeon issue continues to the present day, because ofc a gudgeon failing ruins its piston. But so do a-holes running low RON fuels in high comp motors. FCP are great for parts, the guys "terrible but not so terrible" is just very "imho", imho. the 274 is a nice engine and very very easy to access. Whining on about water pump access? Bro, go look at any Toyota if you want tears to flow
I owned the 2017 C205 with the M274 engine for 3 years. Put 27,000 miles on it. I would love to see you guys do a DIY on replacing the rubber fuel hose near the steering shaft that causes the A/C to smell like gas/fuel. Also diagnosing for a brake squeal fix on cold rainy mornings! From experience of course 😁
@Michael Lee Oh it did not need new fuel lines. I read on the W205 forums that the solution to the fuel smell from the A/C is just a tighter clamp on the rubber fuel line near the steering shaft. You can see my ownership thread here. Not bad reliability at all. I sold it after 4 years because my boss gave me her husband's BMW for free! And I didn't need 2 cars during the pandemic: mbworld.org/forums/c-class-coupe-c205/768895-el-nino-ownership-thread.html www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?p=27506300#post27506300 As for long term reliability after 5 years, check this video out also on the M274 motor! (Since you clicked on this maintenance video). Magic Mike was a Mercedes-Benz dealership tech for 6 years~ and actually responded to my question on his thoughts of this engine. He replied and told me, "I personally wouldn't buy a vehicle with the 270 or 274 engine, but I know there's folks out there that have had good results. ": ua-cam.com/video/pXxPhyxfybo/v-deo.html
@@cupompa I have the same problem with the gas smell. It might be the rubber fuel hose. Was it a hard fix? I currently own a w204 1.6 petrol engine for Europe. M274 engine.
It's an easy fix, we replace the soft hose and the clamps. Remove the cover that sits over the hpfp to gain access up top, access is easy with the transmission underpanel removed when below. My advice is to attach a shoestring to the old clamp up top and tie it to the top of the engine and remove the hose from below pulling downward. When you install the new hose go in the reverse and you'll have a much easier time with the routing of the hose.
Hi master, thanks for sharing all this info on M274, when the first time the timing chain needs to be replaced ? Is that engine is better than the M271 (C180 of 2011 for example) ? Thanks 🙏
I have an SRS system failure due to the Pre-Safe failure in the drivers seat belt tensioning. I thought my eco drive wasn’t working bc of that but there’s also an engine light and so the thermostat may also be the problem. Thank you for this video. I will be servicing my car soon at the MB dealer, hopefully they won’t charge me an arm and a leg for the servicing of the supplement Restraint System
Thank you for the video. Our 2014 Japan spec 1.6 M 274 has developed a noticeable ticking sound. The sound came up immediately after starting the engine one morning and has since not gone away. Sent her in to Merc specialist here in Malaysia who after a day of servicing (e.o. Change) and checking says it is the CGI pump and a very normal sound. Having driven this car for 3" years, decided to start and listen closely. On idle, you There is duration that comes and goes where the ticking sound gets faster after what sounds like a snap over, then back to the slower ticking sound within a brief period of about 30-40 seconds. From the bit I have read, it sounds more like cam chain or cam lobe or cam gear there about. Any guesses would be greatly appreciated. TIA
Forgot to mention it has approximately 45 K Kms on / 26k miles and there were 2 incidents of strong fuel smell for few seconds upon starting in the weeks before but not after. Mechanic checked hoses to and from the CGI with no leaks or cracks detected.
have same sound every cold start. I think its normal, just when engine heats up injectors works lil bit different, trying to heatup as quickly as poss..
Saying that Piston issues were only present on very early cars/engines is absolutely incorrect. There are dozens of cases with USDM and ADM models of this motor from 2017 onward with catastrophic piston failure in Piston 1 and some with multiple pistons. Failure mode ranges from cracked ring lands to completely cracked piston crowns. I can't believe MB USA hasn't been forced to recall these motors or had a class action law suit brought against them as they often fail JUST outside the factory warranty period. I know some owners in CA have gotten MBUSA to pay for replacement because CA makes pistons covered under the 80k mile smog equipment warranty.
Hi, I sent a petition to the administrator of the NHTSA to investigate this piston issue as I was affected and after months and months of pushing the issue they were finally kind enough to start an investigation . If you look at the open investigations for 2015 c300s there are now three and the wrist pin / cracked piston engine failure is one of them . This started about two weeks ago, so let’s have faith in our government to make Mercedes do what is right and take responsibility for this problem. It is totally unsafe for someone to be driving on the road and have this unexpectedly happen, it’s only a matter of time before someone gets hurt and the NHTSA has the power to force Mercedes into recalling this engine .
Those water pumps fail all the time too. They seize and take the belt and anything in the belt's way with it. Also, some versions use a dual stage pump that routinely fails as well. Causes the engine to run hot at speed. Routinely misdiagnosed. And unless I missed something, the turbo had to come out, as the pump lives under the turbo. That means you'll be doing all the seals and gaskets on the turbo as well. Egregious water pump design for sure.
I've read that also a lot of people (also me) have gasoline smell, which happens to be from the hoses before and after the high-pressure fuel pump. this happens only in the cold, when hoses are hard, when its warm, they get softer and they do not smell. this is no joke, this issue is not addressed by mercedes, its left to do it yourself
Nice video, I would definitely like to see more on the M274 engine. My 2016 Metris is throwing the code for the PCV system and I would love to see a video on replacing that.
In April of last year (2021) I was driving my 2017 C300 (W205), piston 1 cylinder 1 had failure (ejected through the engine block) with 86737 KM (53,896 M) on the odometer, I was about 3,896 miles over my factory warranty. Due to my engine block being damaged (the piston went through the block and ejected onto the highway) the repair cost was going to be 12,000EURO. Mercedes Corporate refused to offer any support (good will warranty or otherwise). Mercedes has terrible customer service, I had every oil & oil filter change (at 5,000 mile intervals) performed at the dealership. My car had excellent MB dealership service records and MB still refused to help me. I did not owe anything on the car (thank God I paid it off) so I had to scrap it for pennies on the dollar of what I paid for it. I will NEVER drive a MB again. I have since replaced the car with a BMW 330i and I have been very blessed to not have any issues with it. For me it is not about the money, it is about the principle, one does not buy or lease a Mercedes Benz only to have the engine blow up with only 87,737KM on the odometer! And for the repair cost of the total engine replacement I could have just bought a new car with that (which I did). Please do not buy a C300 (W205) or any MB with the M274 engine.
@@fcpeuro It sucks but I made the best out of a terrible situation, now I have a very well maintained BMW 3 series (330i) and it has been very reliable and dependable. I always get more oil change kits and parts from you guys at FCP Euro :)
You jumped from one hot frypan to another hot frypan. BMW/Mercedes and Audi builds very poor quality cars (but fun to drive and good looking) and does not care at all about customers. You would be much better of with a Lexus/Acura or Infiniti ... Less fun but you will not need a new engine every 3-4 years.. Also Lexus dealers have excellent service. I got a free dashboard on my GX as a good will replacement 10 years after the warranty was expired...
@@juchou2983it’s not a valid argument to write off an entire brand. You sound like an unreasonable un-researched alarmist. Just as there are black sheep engines within a brand, as there are ol’reliables. I have an ‘06 BMW 325xi w/an NA (naturally aspirated) N52 engine that I bought in 2012 with 73,XXX miles. I still have it today with 240,XXX miles. My maintenance wasn’t the stuff of legends either. Hasn’t cost me a fortune. Has been in the shop a few times over the years. Cars are all complex puzzles. Even the simple ones. Something is bound to break.
@@soILLitsADVISED it is an well established fact that post 90s BMW-mercedes-audi are very unreliable and high maintenance cars. You sound like one of those fanboys who bought something and starts claiming how great it is.. BMWs almost always have gasket issues, water pump failures, hard to diagnose random misfire issues, oil burning and so many other major problems. BMWs need reprogramming after just a battery change!! Your anecdotal evidence does not really mean anything.. How many BMW can you show that has more than 200k and still runs properly? I don't understand this blind loyalty that people have for some brands. Yes they are fun.. I have owned a couple of them.. But it's just silly to claim they are reliable. What do you think is the reason you can buy a 2010-12 7-series for 10-15 grand?
I would love to see a guide on replacing the crank position sensor on a 4matic model. There’s nothing online and I’m having a bit of trouble figuring it out.
I have the extended geico warranty 7 yr/100k mile for mechanical breakdown. Ill see whether i keep 2017 infiniti q50 2.0 which has the m274 engine. So far 72k miles and not one issue
Hi, you posted it 6 months ago, what about reliability of your M274 on that Q50S? I was thinking about such car but after deep diving into M274 tech issues, I gave up on it. Too risky in my opinion, compared to Nissan's engines mounted on Q50 series.
My 2016 Metris has the "Low Boost" code and surges boost before going to full limp/zero boost mode. No matter whether it's 3psi, 11psi, or 18psi it will not allow for more than one second of boost before opening the wastegate. No boost leaks, smoke test is clear. Replaced turbo, intake manifold, boost solenoid, boost sensors, intake temp sensor, water pump. Showing P0420 also for cat but it has two new OEM O2 sensors. Magnaflow cat has been on order for months, wondering if for some reason it is limiting boost for that? Cat visually inspected when turbo was replaced, but only from the front site. A few other Metris guys are having this very same issue so I'm the lead dummy spending $ with the parts cannon to see what sticks to the wall. Mercedes/Sprinter dealers won't work on them anymore in my area, so we are out of luck. We order all of our parts for our Metris, BMWs, Minis, and VW's from FCP Euro to keep this family fleet running!
161K miles on it, it's a work van that we'd like to retire to a road trip/van life rig. Bilsteins, Sumo Springs, and some other upfitted items so we are not a Dump-and-Run type...we want it to work and live! Sending off used oil analysis to Blackstone Labs from this last oil change.
W205 is my first car without low oil pressure red indicator. How can I to check if the pressure is OK and what if not OK? Is there any information on dashboard?
It's a relatively complex repair. Intercooler has to be moved, lf motor mount has to come out, you're gonna want a few more specialized tools. It can easily eat up a good portion of your day if you really don't know what you're doing....not recommended for someone who isn't familiar with the engine.
@@JeeperZJ Agreed. I'm currently on 5hrs and I'm just able to see 1 off the 3 bolts to the assembly on the lower portion go the motor. This job in no joke. WHAT A PAIN IN MY ARSE!.. Personally just for the headaches, I would recommend to give Merc Benz the 1400-1500 they want to do this repair. In my opinion it's not worth your time. But I digress...
Hi I have a 2017 infiniti q50 2.0t and on mine the ecu is on the very top of the engine, not like the one in the vid, are there any significant differences between the ones nissan gets, and the ones mercedes uses? If so what are they
Hi, what about reliability of your M274 on that Q50S? I was thinking about such car but after deep diving into M274 tech issues, I gave up on it. Too risky in my opinion, compared to Nissan's engines mounted on Q50 series.
my experience, sounds like a diesel engine, two different mercedes enthusiasts one of them is a car repair shop owner and a mechanic told me it’s not reliable for pushy drivers, he also sent me vid of very damaged piston of an engine driven 29,000 kms only!
I work on these cars for a living. 20+ years now. The M274, like the M270 (transverse mounted) 4 cylinders are basically boat anchor motors developed in conjunction with Renault. These clunkers get all types of issues. One of the worst water pump designs ever (lives under the turbocharger)! Also the breather system is complete junk. Has a breather hose which breaks a lot, that requires intake manifold removal just to replace. Pays about 5 hours of labor to replace. The coolant tanks are always leaking, horrendous ignition coil/boot design. Rarely do the coil boots survive disassembly. And the fuel injectors are known to fail as well. They are pricey, and require unnecessary special tools to replace the seals in the fuel rail. All of that for an engine that doesn't make that much power, and isn't exactly winning any fuel economy awards either. V6/V8 or bust when it comes to MB.
Hi Moe, sometimes the fuel like coming off the HPFP cracks, and causes a small leak. We have this kit in place for that. Mercedes Fuel Hose Kit - Genuine Mercedes 2740703500
Hi Cebo! A good first step would be scanning the ECU for any stored or existing code. This could indicate if you're experiencing a misfire condition or something a bit more involved.
Hi Kyle. I.find your Mercedes Benz vids clear and informative...i just had the 2 front airmatic suspensions changed in my 2016 Merc C200 amg package by a mechanic..but i noticed on my way home a Malfunction light on the dash and my car is a bit higher on the left side(Car is RHD)..Can you say what could be the cause?. Am frustrated..thx..awaiting your response(i am a female)..God bless you
anyone know if a tune can kill the reliability on these engines? I have a 2017 e300 and would love more power but have always kept my cars stock since i didn't want to play with the reliability
I know that AMR makes various tunes for it, they’re pretty expensive unfortunately, $1,300-$1,500 for a C300, but I hear they can give 50-70bhp depending on what kind of bolt on’s you’re working with. Hope this helps!
Loved your video. Great job. I have a 2011 ml350 which I love but want the newer lane changing , parking assist. etc and considering a GLE 350 . I only drive 3-4 K miles/yr. Should I get an excellent condition 2016 GLE 350 V6 or 2017 GLE 350. Towing and gas mileage don't matter. Thank you for your time and Consideration, Tony
I have a c200 w205 petrol ... the check engine came on, I took the car to Mercedes and they changed my NoX sensor.. after 3 months the check engine appeared again .. the same problem again, the NoX sensor was changed ... after 3 weeks the same problem check engine with NoX sensor error ... what could be the problem?
Very interesting your video and very useful! Honestly, I was very intrigued when you talked about the common issue that this engine has with the piston. You described some exact sounds that my M274 makes in the mornings when the engine is cold. I have a 2018 C300. You mentioned that this is common in the 2015 and 2016 models. I hope that this is already resolved for the 2018 model. However, your description of the issue matches what's happening with my engine, but only when it's cold. After about 15 minutes, it works perfectly. The car has 36,000 miles and is very well maintained. Should I be worried?
Hey there Cristian! Your C300 should have an M264 engine, which is a bit different from the M274 that Kyle is diving into in this video. While Mercedes has acknowledged some valve seat issues on the M260 and M264 twins with an extended recall (fairly unlikely given your description, but may be worth looking into), they haven't noted any of the wristpin issues present on the early M270 and M274 engines carrying over to the newer family. The clattering of the direct-injection fuel delivery system on your engine is generally pretty noisy when functioning tip-top, which could be a part of what you're hearing. This being said, if you're hearing a noise that concerns you, swing by a dealer or independent shop to be sure it isn't a cause for concern!
@@fcpeuro Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, the M274 is in the c-class, W205 from the 2015 to 2018 models. The M264 engine is from 2019 onwards in the c-class. When you mentioned that my engine was different, you made me doubt and I investigated. Besides, it's the same engine as in the video, as far as it looks. I'm very worried because I have the exact symptoms. I live in NYC. When I took the car to Mercedes Benz for maintenance, they said everything was fine. But no, I'm sure that this engine has the exact symptoms described in this video. Only when it's cold. So I started researching more deeply and found out that several owners of this engine had problems with the piston at any mileage - 16,000, 30,000, 100,000 miles. It breaks out of nowhere without warning. I also found out that there's an ongoing lawsuit in California for this issue. I also want to think that it might be false information. But when I saw this video, my doubts are present again. Honestly, I don't know what to do. I take very good care of the car and always use the remote start before using the car to warm up the engine. Thank you for your time.
The car continues to run perfectly, only the noise in the mornings described in this video. At 4 minutes when it's fully warmed up, it stops. It's the same description, like metals rubbing together and a slight knocking. I maintain it very well. I have all the maintenance documented, the car has only 36k miles. Everything has been changed, including the coolant and brake fluids. Everything is very well controlled. So far, the car runs like a dream. But I'm always worried about that noise. I'm already considering selling it.
My check engine came on. Read the code it was a cylinder 2 misfire. Replaced the spark plugs and changed the ignition coil. But after 500 miles of driving another misfire occurred in cylinder 2. Any help or suggestion what can be causing this ?
I'm not sure what version of this engine is in my q50 bit I'm hoping I lucked out, I use mobile 10w40 and change every 5k and spark plugs every 40k miles I drive that car very hard and I'm at 83k with no issues whatsoever
how serious with P219C, P0301and misfire...had replaced spark plugs, ignition coil , air filter, fuel injector in cylinder #1....but engine still shakes and chk engine light came back on
Greetings, I have a W212 e180 1.6 2015 274 engine vehicle, the tachometer is constant at idle, but there is shaking when you give gas at constant speed, the authorized service changed the spark plug, the problem continues, there is no fault code other than thermostat failure, authorized service, injector, tank fuel. pump, high pressure pump, it says let's change the coil, but this change requires a lot of money, first of all, where do you think I should look for this shaking failure, shaking does not always happen, it does it for 10 minutes in 1 hour of use, in total, the tachometer is hovering between 1500 and 2500 rpm, sports You don't feel much shaking during use, regards.
I own a 2015 E200 coupe with M274 engine right now and it's show code out of nowhere P217800(Mixture failure, rich fuel in bank 1), which part should I be concern or where should I check first? does it urgent to fix?
Very useful video thanks for it and more of it is absolutely welcome ;) It is a little bit more noisy than a normal gasoline engine, I asked MB dealership they said thats because this engine has a very high feul pressure about 200bar which make that extra more noise by idling
The injectors, by their nature, are also louder since they're the piezo design which is basically vibrating crystals that create a current to open the injector nozzle when commanded.
That’s what many people were told but if you listen to this video at 5:50 he talks about the piston slap… that’s the noise I heard when my car was sounding like a mini diesel . It wasn’t because of the high fuel pressure or anything else , it was the sound of the piston slapping the inside of the cylinder wall which would later lead to it cracking as mine did at only 51k miles. The newer models are a lot quieter btw - they fixed the wrist pin issue
Water pumps can definitely make noise as they start to go bad. Valve tapping noise can be anything, unfortunately. You can have noisy lifters, a bad bearing on an accessory or pulley, low oil ect.
Hello, I am interested in purchasing such an engine, exactly perfect and new, fully equipped, how can you help me purchase such an engine for my vehicle, I am the owner of a Mercedes Benz C-Class C 300 2.0 turbo M274 engine 245 horsepower
Has anyone replaced their POLY-V Belt yet? There isn't a designated interval but looking to see what is common practice as I wouldn't want it to snap before replacement.
these things are still eating pistons, we "at my shop" have seen 3 in the last year... newer ones too, just saw a 2017 or 2018 only 39k on the clock, it's sad but they're just trying to get too much out of these engines and making them as cheaply as possible... actually there is a class action lawsuit going on currently over this engine specially, good luck and don't buy one of these cars that come with a M274, Mercedes is usually very good with engine development, this one must have been on a Friday at 4:30pm...
yes. it doesn't come separate from the assembly... trust me... this job is horrible and a pain in the ass. 5-8hrs from start to finish depending on you experience. possibly even longer. pay the dealer. it might be the one time it's worth it.
Thank you really nice video 👍. Mine just got fuel leak at low side pipe of high pressure pump got it fix yesterday. Not sure state model has this problem in mine country has this issue a lots.
Would you know where the Camsahft position sensor is for this M274 Engine? As we are seeing the engine light sign and would like to fix it by replacing the sensor
A drive belt runs the accessories (alternator, a/c compressor, water pump, etc) whereas a timing belt (or chain which this engine uses) is what connects the crankshaft to the camshaft (s).
I have a 2019 E300. Garbage! 57k miles, and the intake adjuster broke. A $7,300 repair. The service advisor said it's a Nissan motor. He said it's not worth keeping but with a trade-in value of $20k that's negative $11.5k from what i owe. That's why you never buy a Mercedes.
Well in USA you might see V8s, here where i live tax is high for big displacemnet engines so you are very rich if you drive a V6 diesel. This engine is 1991cc and that is very improtnat if you have this kind of tax. This engine with LPG migh be the best go to before all the cab drivers grab these cars. For example here you cant find a good M271 engine anymore from the overuse as taxis or kids who think they are cool in there W203 manual with a straight pipe
In the USA they weren't available until not long ago. We in the poorer parts of the world are used to it, though. And this version of the M274 is the strongest one, here in Brazil the most common is an 1.6 liter with 156cv.
I’m dreading the day when my ‘19 Metris van’s PCV fails. Driver’s side ECU and engine mount need to be removed to access the PCV assembly. Ppl who had it say it’s about a $3k job at the dealer 😐
My dealer wanted $1400 to do it on my 2017 E300. I elected to do it myself... NEVER AGAIN... After 5hrs and I'm about 60% from done. Next time I'll pay the $1600. Not worth 8-9hrs of my time...
Oh and btw I am a BMW/Land Rover tech 😅🤣
This engine is GREAT.
Would you recommend keeping a 19' W213 E300 with an m274 engine? Do you think these engines can hit 150k miles without any serious problems?
@@NotYet8 nope
My sprinter van has one of these motors, I haul 1500lbs all day every day and it pulls along just fine.
Got 3 sprinter vans this week with cylinder 1 misfires and cracked pistons
Sorry to hear this has happened to you :(
This channel is right on. Very precise. Yes Turbo is bullet proof, but diaphragm goes bad. Yes PCV is big problem which cost 1-1.5K$ to customers. GLA is little different tho, GLA is much worse design it will cost you fortune. Otherwise nice smooth 2.0T engine with least problems and good power.
mmmmthese iridium spark plugs are good for 100-150k kms, hes being over cautious with such short intervals.
TOTAL BS...
Yes more on this topic.
And I didn't need 2 cars during the pandemic:

As for long term reliability after 5 years, check this video out also on the M274 motor! (Since you clicked on this maintenance video). Magic Mike was a Mercedes-Benz dealership tech for 6 years~ and actually responded to my question on his thoughts of this engine. George, check with the dealer....there was a recall on this engine to replace a defective fuel line. Should be no cost to you.
Thanks 🙏
A timing chain should last the life of the engine if you change the oil on a consistent basis.

Really great video and info about this engine.I now know what to look and listen for.👌
Those water pumps fail all the time too.

Mercedes extended the warranty on the part to 150,000 Miles P052E should be the code
So sorry to hear that!

"terrible but not too terrible m274 engine" - can you add more details to why you believe this to be a terrible engine?
my experience, sounds like a diesel engine, two different mercedes enthusiasts one of them is a car repair shop owner and a mechanic told me it’s not reliable for pushy drivers, he also sent me vid of very damaged piston of an engine driven 29,000 kms only!

Can you keep us updated on your journey with this issue? Thank you for your time 🙏
The car continues to run perfectly, only the noise in the mornings described in this video.

Did you fix the issue? My 1.6 M274 has a similar issue
The problem still persists, they say I need to replace the entire fuel system, if the problem does not go away, we will look at other points.
They want 1/5 of the car price
I think it's a simple problem,
What do I do if my crankshaft position sensor is faulty
I own a 2015 E200 coupe with M274 engine right now and it's show code out of nowhere P217800(Mixture failure, rich fuel in bank 1), which part should I be concern or where should I check first? does it urgent to fix?
How many km?
what about a disassembly? 😎
great job guys.........
Very useful video thanks for it and more of it is absolutely welcome ;)
It is a little bit more noisy than a normal gasoline engine, I asked MB dealership they said thats because this engine has a very high feul pressure about 200bar which make that extra more noise by idling
Am having this noise in my car 274 and I don't know if is bring
Can the water pump start making noise? My c300 makes this noise as the RPMs change, sounds like valve tapping. Please advise
Water pumps can definitely make noise as they start to go bad. Valve tapping noise can be anything, unfortunately. You can have noisy lifters, a bad bearing on an accessory or pulley, low oil ect.
I have an issue with my m274 on w212 it has a hard start issue and a fault code p0016
Is the M274 engine reliable? im looking to buy SLC 1.6T with 156HP. need your help!
Yes, if driven often. My mechanic has had to replace thermostat (3 way valve $400AUD OE MB part) on cars driven short trips.
Can you do a buyers review, parts, problems, etc. on the W213? :)
Does anyone know where the throttle body is? Many thx!
is there a power steering reservoir on this engine? if so where can I locate it?
It’s uses electronic steering
Hello, I have a problem with the engine. A suspicious sign appears in the car, and the car’s torque is weak. Oil rises on the surface of the engine
Is there any cases on excessive oil consumption c300 only 30k milles?
Yes, usually related to oil control ring failure on piston 1.
Very nice to bro 😌
Hello, I am interested in purchasing such an engine, exactly perfect and new, fully equipped, how can you help me purchase such an engine for my vehicle, I am the owner of a Mercedes Benz C-Class C 300 2.0 turbo M274 engine 245 horsepower
Has anyone replaced their POLY-V Belt yet? There isn't a designated interval but looking to see what is common practice as I wouldn't want it to snap before replacement.
I think visual check is ok, I think I did mine at 150k kms? Got to 290k kms (2014 A180) before car was written off by rear end crash
Can you do a video like this on the M276
we'll have the team add it to the list!
Can u do a engine tuning in this car
in general, its likely possible, but we here at FCP Euro do not
these things are still eating pistons, we "at my shop" have seen 3 in the last year... newer ones too, just saw a 2017 or 2018 only 39k on the clock, it's sad but they're just trying to get too much out of these engines and making them as cheaply as possible... actually there is a class action lawsuit going on currently over this engine specially, good luck and don't buy one of these cars that come with a M274, Mercedes is usually very good with engine development, this one must have been on a Friday at 4:30pm...
So pcv can only be fixed by replacing
yes. it doesn't come separate from the assembly... trust me... this job is horrible and a pain in the ass.
This seems to be a common theme. We just filmed a quick tech tip mentioning that on the M274 engine!
Would you know where the Camsahft position sensor is for this M274 Engine? As we are seeing the engine light sign and would like to fix it by replacing the sensor
Drive belt? This thing doesn’t have a chain ?
I’m confused sorry.
The belt runs the engine accessories
A drive belt runs the accessories (alternator, a/c compressor, water pump, etc) whereas a timing belt (or chain which this engine uses) is what connects the crankshaft to the camshaft (s).
One major defect is poor quality of cam shaft.
Yup, you can read about it here, there are pictures as well: ezoteriker.ru/en/opisanie-dvigatelya-m-274-de-20-al-opisanie-dvigatelya-m274/
He acts like Mercedes has never made a 4 cylinder before
In the USA they weren't available until not long ago. We in the poorer parts of the world are used to it, though. And this version of the M274 is the strongest one, here in Brazil the most common is an 1.6 liter with 156cv.
@@gilsonrogeriolimaoliveira2807 Americans love big engines V6, 8, 10 or 12
@@mzee5533 everyone loves a big engine, but nowhere in the world gas is so cheap as in the USA.

Ecu tuning options?

I’m dreading the day when my ‘19 Metris van’s PCV fails. Driver’s side ECU and engine mount need to be removed to access the PCV assembly. Ppl who had it say it’s about a $3k job at the dealer 😐
My dealer wanted $1400 to do it on my 2017 E300. I elected to do it myself... NEVER AGAIN... After 5hrs and I'm about 60% from done. Next time I'll pay the $1600. Not worth 8-9hrs of my time...
I have the fault code PO304

Hi Muhammed, this is an M274 focused video!
What do you think of the 2020 Mercedes GLC300? Is it reliable and can go the distance? I just purchased one and want to know what to look out for
Doesn't the W204 use the M271... really curious about the differences in the engines
It also uses the M274 1,6 engine only last ones made jus before w205
271 is a decent engine, the 274 is a complete steaming pile.
@@kudzitsuro6448 Does the 1.6 m274 in w204 have problems with pistons?
the engine itself might be small as it's a 4 cylinder, but that engine bay looks absolutely cluttered with shit. Great video as always though.
Cluttered is relative, and that engine bay looks so much easier to work on than a modern BMW
