Early Christianity is so fascinating. It is so easy to presuppose that the Christianities and Bibles which exist today were inevitable but so many people had radically different ideas about Christianity and Jesus.
There's a natural winnowing process, you know? Some beliefs tend to be more compatible with whatever society they're in, whereas others are more fringe. Over time the fringe beliefs tend to fade, whereas the more compatible ones tend to kind of combine and conform. Evolution, basically.
@@mahatmarandy5977 I'd say it was less about evolution and more about what the rulers and church leaders at any given time decided was "in" or "out." The Jews killed Jesus and the bible and new testament are all written by Jews. Now you see why many books have been taken out. Just ask Enoch the man who walked with God.
Imagine if two thousand years from now some historians find the script to "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" and all excitedly start to proclaim to the world that this is an alternate view of Lincoln that the "mainstream" wanted to hide. After all, it was written only 147 years after Lincoln's death, so it must be true, right?

Can you do a video on Noah's ark or the story of Nuh (AS) being similar in so many cultures around the world as its really interesting that people from different geographical locations have similar legends around a great flood with a prominent figure in the center. Also amazing channel !!
Interesting topic. What is your reasoning behind it? I would say myth originated in one place and was gradually spread along the old World. It has more sense to me than the notion that all of these myths are referencing the same world-wide flood. I think this myth originated somewhere in the middle east which was a center of domestication and the birth of agriculture. Agriculture was spread through migration from Middle east to many parts of the Old World, and it's not unimaginable that those people/migrants who were bringing the knowledge of farming and agriculture to the rest of the Old World brought these myths and stories with them, which through the next few millenia became for every culture their own distinct flood myth. Problem regarding the flood myths in the New World is that we cannot go back in time and ask native people what is the exact story, we only have stories which were filtered through and written down by the 15th century spanish monks, who firmly believed in the story about the Noah's ark to be truth. That easily could have resulted, and most probably it did, in those monks trying to connect some stories about the floods in the New World with Noah's ark, thus making those stories from the New World seem much more simmilar to the story of Noah's ark than it probably actually was, maybe they were not even remotely simmilar. (mind you that in 15th century there was no spanish-native american dictionary, so much of the actual stories from the New World were highly reinterpretated while being written down and we will never know what the actual story was like) These are not mine ideas, I heard it from several archeologists and thus far it's the explanation for the world-wide spread of the flood myth which for me makes the most sense. Far from saying it's the actual truth, no one can know that, but that's what makes it a interesting topic for discussion.
@@asrarahmed5044 Yes I agree with that, sorry for not emphasizing it in previous comment. I believe there was possibly a flood in the place, or close to, where myth originated, not that it was a worldwide flood.
@dominikivankovic63 In islam there's no reference to it being a worldwide flood. It makes more sense to me the flood took place in a specific place as well. Allah knows best. It resembles the story of Noah/Nuh (PBUH) so closely, it actually gave me goosebumps
The area the ancient israelites/Judaens lived, known today as levant, back then it was called, Canaan. It was the connection point between africa, europe, and asia all the trade routes go through Canaan. (Hence way Egypt and the Hittites were fighting over that area.) This means goods, people, and ideas came through there all the time. Its less about a real world wide flood, but the melding of different peoples. Some of tells in the old testament were most likely influence by these tales and incorperated them and slightly change them to fit in. People of the bronze and iron age record history different, adding embellishments and literary devices (such as characters) to make theological points. The accuracy of the account mattered little, what did matter was what were they trying to tell you.

Like, on the surface the bad guy helping with or doing the murder of an important figure, but it turns out that the important figure planned it all along and it is only because of SnapeJudas' true faith and loyalty that they did the bad thing and took on all the hatred for it.

Obviously when a religion needs a sacrifice because of a prophecy, there needs to be a sacrificed and a sacrifyer. All actors according to a book. No sacrifyer, no sacrificed. How can there be individual guilt in such a scenario.
I was 12 years old when I first thought: if Judas hadn't existed there would have been no crucifixion therefore no salvation. If it was prophesied to happen, someone was already doomed to have to play that role since before they existed so sending them to hell would be unfair. It was the beginning of an endless questioning that led me to lose all faith.
The Bible is actually very clear that Judas’s betrayal is ordained by God. It is spoken of in the Psalms, for example. The trouble with popular evangelical Christianity today is that it emphasizes the freedom of will. The Bible does not, nor has historic Christianity. You are quite right to point out that Judas’s betrayal, if ordained by God, is unfair according to a theological system that emphasizes choice (as popular Arminian evangelicalism and Roman Catholicism). It’s plainly inconsistent. However, many evangelical Christians, if they have such questions, are never given answers, and they are discouraged from asking them. If your upbringing is like mine was (fundamentalist, Pentecostal), then you were told “Just believe.” But belief without knowledge is nonsensical. Faith must be grounded in something real, or else it is stupid fantasy. I found answers to my questions in the Westminster Standards. My parents and siblings think I’m a heretic, probably, but by God’s grace I have been brought to faith built on knowledge, on truth, and not on mere feeling or wishful thinking.
People literally sell people for money in 2023....but a guy selling out his friend 2k years ago is shocking to you? Stay questioning then and hopefully God will eventually answer you.
Existing outside time and space and matter means that was is past and future are all happening in an eternal now. Things are known but they are still choice. These concepts are difficult to understand on this dimension but free agency is still real

@@Principles_of_Psychology True. Evidently it presents a discourse that completely carves out a different path from the Christian tradition. However, one would argue that the sanctity with which the crucifixion event is appreciated by Christian adherents is much revered. To alter any aspect of its story telling, especially in a way that deviates away from the normative standard nominated by the church, and to further allude that Christ himself encouraged this thought process, complicates the crucifixion event in a disruptive way.
How much sense does it make, that the actual favorite is shunned by the others. Envy is real. The others all demonize him in their writings and by the quality of QUANTITY alone, Judas would totally get the short end of the stick. Even if we'd had this account for longer than just the last 20 years.
It's so upsetting because these events have drastically shaped the last 2000 years. And we still do not fully understand what happened during Jesus' time, and so much of the records have been lost. @@malcmitchell9738 I don’t necessary know that I believe this gospel but within the context of the narrative it makes sense that Judas would commit suicide even if the gospel was true. Thank you for your wonderful efforts and great channel. Have you considered to talk about the missing years of Jesus and the legendary stories of him visiting India, and also said to have settled down in kashmir after the crucifixion?
The apostles in a state of "Confusion" is probably the best description of the development of Christianity. A group of people who thought they knew what was happening but then the expected revival of the Davidic kingdom didn't show up and oust the Romans, and the messiah was killed there was a lot of explaining to do. The sequence we have received: the proto-orthodox begat the orthodox who begat the orthodox who begat the schisms that begat contemporary christianity; would most likely sound as bizarre to the early Jesus communities as this gospel sounds to us. In The Gospel According to Me Judas is more an everyman rather than a great betrayer. His sins of greed, selfishness and egoism are not unique but universal. That we identify more with the apostles, that understand the way of Jesus and that our brand of Christianity is the true path is probably as confused as the communities of Paul, Judas, Thomas or Seth.

Judas is the stumbling block of modern Christianity…he should have been the first to be forgiven…so that the faith could move forward properly. They purport to be the religion of forgiveness yet brother Judas burns in the everlasting fire of their faith. If these are the only words you know of Jesus , it’s the only words you need ….” Do not worship me, worship the ONE who sent me” ☝️
But where is it said we know Judas went to hell? I don't think the Bible says that anywhere. If he were to ask for forgiveness, he would be forgiven. Though we don't know if he did or did not. Although Jesus had to be killed, if Judas hadn't done it, the Jewish authorities would still eventually have killed him somehow. And Judas was a bad guy from the start. He was stealing from the money meant to be used by the group for their ministry work.
Not sure if anyone has mentioned it here but interestingly the flight of the feathered serpent by Armando Cosani came out before the discovery of the gospel of Judas. It has three parts, the first is an easy read, very inspirational and easy to understand for the most part. Second book is full of symbolism that can easily go over the head but the third book is an account very similar to the gospel of Judas only it was released years earlier than the gospel of Judas discovery 🤯
The Gospel of Judas could have been made in the 2nd Century. However, that doesn't mean it should be in the Bible. Because the Bible doesn't align with Judas
As far as I understand, the beliefs of the gnostics align with the gospel of Judas that was found. I imagine that book was based on them. But Iranaeus mentions a gospel of Judas, so I imagine it was known by them early on. Personally, i think it was written by the gnostics to justify their beliefs then lost and recently rediscovered.
This would be so interesting except that it pretty much shows that the New Testament was a concoction of men playing an equivalent of fans and creators of a modern sci-fi or fantasy series deciding what is Canon and what is not. Jesus apparently did exist and made a splash in his day in jump starting a spin-off religion but it was latter-day creators and fans who created the orthodoxy of the religion. People don't change, we are as we were then.
“People don’t change, we are as we were then” Yeas and no. Are we just a bunch of primates with all its flaws? Yes. But we have also been the beneficiaries of the principles of the Enlightenment and the development of the scientific method. The fact that we can have this conversation anonymously, over the internet, and NOT be stoned (at least here in the US), tells me we have changed some. We are constantly evolving by every new generation. But I do absolutely agree with you that the Bible is just a “best seller” compilation and things like the Second Council of Nicaea is the equivalent of a bunch of men arguing if the SS Enterprise is faster than the Millennium Falcon
Great presentation, thank you. Fwiw, the reason non canonical books “didn’t make it into the Bible”, is that they were deemed to simply be too confusing, or they were in error somehow, or that they were altogether wrong or just were not pertinent.

I would like to ask you, dear fellow human, reading this and who seriously and earnestly ponder stuff like this: What do you consider is the purest and most authentical christian theology/metaphysics known to men? Also, what is your short take about what happened, let's say, from Golgatha to Nicea, the crucial points? If you wish, feel free to add your own 'wild cards' in form of unproven events etc, let your intuitive inagination flow. authenticity based on what? carbon dating, textual analysis? literal interpretation? i dont count those as authentic.. i rather count texts, which align with the true allegorical interpretation of these texts as authentic. for anyone who has had the luck to trace it back, they know that the crucifixtion is symbolism for celibacy. "33" and "golgotha" represent the spine and the skull. the human spine has 33 vertebrates, "golgotha" means literally "place of skull". the word "Christ" comes from "cristos" which means "anointing, seed, oil". your cristos is your sexaul essence. if its not wasted, if you submit ("Islam") yourself to the will of God, which expressed itself in the 1st commandment stating no eating the forbidden fruit (which is sex, i could go into that as well, but i wont), then this sacred oil travels up the spine and is crucified in your golgotha. the serpent is symbolic of lust. the same which beguiled adam and eve is the same one has to overcome. the myth about a hero slaying a dragon (dragons = serpents = lust), is also about this single truth. authenticity can only be proven by the common denominator. all things in the bible are allegorical or paraboloic. O.T. says that in psalms, how God utters dark sayings of old (dark sayings = hidden/occult wisdom = parables/allegories). in the N.T. you got the mythical figure (invented by the occultists to convey the message secretly) Christ speaking in parables and allegories. and the text makes it crystal clear that nothing he said was literal. then you got St Paul in galatians 4, referring to the story of abraham and his 2 sons and clearly stating that its not literal but allegorical. so, once someon understands the actual truth, it is super easy to say what is real / authentic and what is not. because ALL religions teach this allegorically. its basically celibacy. that is why gnosticism is false. its a fancy invention of some naughty writers. the thing however is, that gnosis is mixed with some truth. there are practices which have been thrown into the mix, which do actually work and allow you to reach specific spiritual goalposts (entering the "kingdom of heaven" aka jhana / samadhi / hal / trance).. having "direct insight" (gnosis), you become able to wield supernatural powers. the thing however is, its a re-branding of something else. the christian formula, the judaic formula - of celibacy, has been taken, perverted, given a completely different spin. and one would expect it to be impotent, yet there are practices in that framework, which if followed, will yield certain results. and thus, it will appear legitimate to the undiscerning follower. but the thing is - the height you can reach withot celibacy is limited. hence, there is no "salvation" except through your "cristos" (seed) and it crucified. as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the offspring of Adam ("son of man", humankind) be cured (from mortality). Adam & Eve fell due to "eating" (Proverbs 30:20 says eating = sex) the forbidden fruit (orgasm) from the tree (genitals) placed in the midst of the garden (center of the human anatomy) due to being begulied by the serpent (lust). thats why the only solution is what Moses did. or the crucifixtion. or being one of the 5 wise virgins of the prable of the 10. the 5 wise are wise due to having "oil" in their "lanterns".. or, lets use buddhism - the source of all suffering is desire. not a generic catch all desire, but lust - if you decipher the allegories and parables employed there. lets use islam - the word "islam" means "submission to God". adam and hawa (eve) were thrown out of paradise due to not submitting to the 1st will of God -celibacy. hence, to submit to the will of God, to be a muslim (a universal thing that applies to all celibates, across all "religions"), means to be muslim - and this is the same formula. lets go taoism - more specifically, neidan. where you reverse the flow by turning the "wheel of darma" - a mechanism within the body, which the celibates discover, which is the circulation of divine energy (chi) up the spine and down in the front into the navel area, from which the whell was spun in the other direction, leading to the downfall of the being. the spinning started with the puberty and with it, came a leak at the bottom of the "microcosmic orbit". hence in neidan, you have celibacy. tantra - sex withot release. as Christ descended from the Most High (brain), so must he ascend back up again. this is talking about your internal microcosmic orbit, your spine, your skull and your cristos. in light of this... it is VERY easy to discern what is true and what is false. any religion or sect or whatever, which is not in alignment with this, is bullshit. because this is the common denominator across the major traditions. they have all testified about the same thing. death exists due to sex. procreation is a clutch for mortals. in fact, sex is the cause of mortality. in heaven there is no sex (marrying, giving in marriage, as Jesus put it) because there, people are like the angels of God - in other words, immortal. immortals have no need for procreation, as they do not die and the species can not go extinct. hence, the way that seems right to humanity, but the ends thereof are destruction, is none other than lust/sex/marriage/procreation. its been condoned. its been allowed. but never recommended. religions dont employ a black and white approach.. i have rambled quite a bit. gnostics are misled. this text here is also inauthentic. its the fanciful writing of some troll back in those times. descpicable person, who muddied the waters!

There isn’t one. Nikos Kazantzakis' novel _"The Last Temptation of Christ (1955)"_ captured the gist of this story long before the discovery of the Gospel of Judas. Either he was very prescient, or some how the basic story was preserved and he elaborated on that story.
Yes, thank you for this reminder. In the LTOC Jesus told Judas that he Judas is the only one of the disciples that has the strength to do what must be done.
It's an obvious thing to arrive at: if the Passion is a part of the plan, then Judas' betrayal must also be a part of the plan. From there, it's easy to develop the notion that Judas didn't betray Jesus, but rather fulfilled a role in his plan.
@@EgonSupreme The passion could have been achieved without Judas. The jewish spiritual authorities still wanted to kill Jesus regardless if Judas existed or not.

As a librarian, one with a deep interest in archives, the improper storage of the manuscript breaks my heart.

He's actually accurate more than half the time. He's wrong about GThomas not being gnostic. All one needs to do is read it.
@@mahatmarandy5977 I'd say it was less about evolution and more about what the rulers and church leaders at any given time decided was "in" or "out." The Gnostics were critical of proto-Orthodox teachings; and by extension, critical of the leaders and power structure associated with those teachings. From a basic political standpoint, it makes sense that proto-Orthodox leaders would label Gnostics as heretical. People did hold deep beliefs. This alternate view of Jesus, Judas and the Apostles makes my head spin thinking about it from the perspective of politics, and the fact that the winners get to write the history. This video is fascinating.
The Jews killed Jesus and the bible and new testament are all written by Jews. Now you see why many books have been taken out. Just ask Enoch the man who walked with God.
There were no winners (in a humanistic context)…almost all of the disciples and apostles were killed for their beliefs

What a fascinating channel! I'm so glad I found it. Greetings from South America 🇨🇱🇨🇱
The last part of the film "Last Temptation of Christ" (1988) by Scorsese portrays Judas somewhat like the Gnostic depiction in the Gospel of Judas. I had assumed that this depiction came from Kazantzakis, author of the book. But now I am wondering if it came from Scorsese's reading of the (then rather newly re-discovered) Gospel of Judas.
In 1988 it had been discovered, but nobody knew it was the gospel of Judas, and it had not been translated yet.

Excellent presentation! Can you explain meaning of Barbelo bit more.
(mind you that in 15th century there was no spanish-native american dictionary, so much of the actual stories from the New World were highly reinterpretated while being written down and we will never know what the actual story was like)
These are not mine ideas, I heard it from several archeologists and thus far it's the explanation for the world-wide spread of the flood myth which for me makes the most sense. Far from saying it's the actual truth, no one can know that, but that's what makes it a interesting topic for discussion.
@@dominikivankovic63 or it was an actual event that took place, and with time became myth with people adding to the story
But I do find it amazing how the oldest written text we have (epic of gilgamesh) talks about the flood and a prominent figure who built an Ark and put all the animals in pairs on it.

@@Daniel_Godismyjudge--Isah33.22 ok but theyre asking for more academic discussions on books related to those in the bible, not what the bible was inspired by.
Obviously when a religion needs a sacrifice because of a prophecy, there needs to be a sacrificed and a sacrifyer. All actors according to a book. No sacrifyer, no sacrificed. How can there be individual guilt in such a scenario.

@@eimere Awesome!
If Judas wouldn’t have done it someone else would have. Plenty of ppl would trade a man for money.
It was foretold that people would get so evil that they would trade a sinless for money.

However, one would argue that the sanctity with which the crucifixion event is appreciated by Christian adherents is much revered.
We're fairly certain all of these people existed (including Jesus), but fairly uncertain how exactly these events happened and who these people were.
*CORRECTION* around 00:15 into the video, when it is claimed that these non-canonical books “did NOT make it into the Bible” it should actually have said *many were in fact IN THE BIBLE, then REMOVED for various reasons* which is a very different thing.

I don’t necessary know that I believe this gospel but within the context of the narrative it makes sense that Judas would commit suicide even if the gospel was true. It’s no different than there being a plan to martyr Jesus and scorn Judas. If scorning Judas is part of the plan, then having him commit suicide reinforces the appearance of guilt which makes his actions even more scornful and implies he was acting out of betrayal rather than loyalty.

As far as I understand, the beliefs of the gnostics align with the gospel of Judas that was found. I imagine that book was based on them. This would be so interesting except that it pretty much shows that the New Testament was a concoction of men playing an equivalent of fans and creators of a modern sci-fi or fantasy series deciding what is Canon and what is not. authenticity based on what? carbon dating, textual analysis? literal interpretation?
i dont count those as authentic..
i rather count texts, which align with the true allegorical interpretation of these texts as authentic.
for anyone who has had the luck to trace it back, they know that the crucifixtion is symbolism for celibacy.

Before the gospel of Judas was rediscovered, lots of people quoted and criticized it. Iraneus even mentions it. 4:20
