Carly is the daughter of Richard Simon, cofounder of the Simon & Schuster publishing house. So she was raised in an affluent and well connected family. She would know many famous and "vain" people with private jets. 🤣 But her talent carried her to her own success and fame as one of the top singer-song writers of the 70's and beyond.

The song is written about the actor Warren Beatty. My son works at the horse racetrack in Saratoga Springs New York that she refers to. It's the place where potato chips (Saratoga Chips), carbonated spring water (Saratoga Spring Water in the beautiful cobalt glass bottles), and the club sandwich (double decker turkey sandwich) were invented.

Adjusted for inflation, she received around 600k USD in today's $. That's a healthy inheritance, but it's not like she was Alice Walton (Wal-Mart) or Françoise Bettencourt (L'Oréal) type of heiress.

Carly has a slew of hits in the early seventies you couldn't turn on the radio without hearing a new Carly Simon hit: "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be", "Anticipation", "Jesse", "You Belong to Me", "Legend in Your Own Time", and the list goes on and on..
As far as who she is singing about in "You're so Vain" it is several men she has never said exactly who but had dropped hints that the song has references to Mic Jagger, James Taylor, and movie actor Warren Battey. Carly is a genius and knows that if she flat out told who she is singing about it would take away some of the mystique after all everyone loves a good mystery..

The song came out in1972. It's about her life, but she's kept everything under wraps. In 2015, she finally came out and said, the second verse was about "Warren Beatty".

She also tells a story of a rich girl who is disillusioned with marriage "That's the way I always heard it should be." The situation may seem unfamiliar to young people today, but in the late 60s and 70s women were just starting to break out of identifying only as "mrs" someone.

The winning bid came as $50,000 from Dick Ebersol, a friend of hers and the president of NBC Sports. An absolute musical masterwork, the song is also steeped in mystery, as the identity of the song’s subject has never been disclosed. The most common candidates are ex-husband James Taylor, David Bowie, Kris Kristofferson, David Cassidy, Cat Stevens, and Mick Jagger. However, over the years, Simon has gradually denied almost all of these.
Then we come to the question of it being Warren Beatty, the famous Hollywood lothario. Back in 2004, Simon teased us all when she told Regis Philbin: “If I tell it, it’s going to come out in dribs and drabs. And I’ve given out two letters already, an ‘A’ and an ‘E’. But I’m going to add one to it. I’m going to add an ‘R’ in honour of you.”
All three letters appear in Warren Beatty’s name, and credence was added to the claim in 2007 when the Dick Tracy auteur said: “Let’s be honest. That song was about me.” This was supported by Simon’s 1983 assertion that Beatty “certainly thought it was about him-he called me and said thanks for the song…”
However, Simon has always understood that the song’s mystery is one of its greatest strengths, and despite it being reported that she has told people ranging from Howard Stern to Taylor Swift the subject’s identity, it has never been made public.
In 2015, when promoting her memoir, Simon drip-fed us some more information and said, “I have confirmed that the second verse is Warren (Beatty)”, adding again that “Warren thinks the whole thing is about him”. “Now, that doesn’t mean that the other two verses aren’t also about Warren,” she then strangely explained to the BBC. “It just means that the second one is.”
Although her 2015 disclosure was peculiar, the most intriguing part of the song’s story came 12 years prior, in 2003. At that point, she was still unyielding about revealing who the song was about, but it was here that she decided to start her long path of drip-feeding fans clues.
In August of that year, the songstress agreed to reveal the identity to the highest bidder of the Martha’s Vineyard Possible Dreams charity auction. The winning bid came as $50,000 from Dick Ebersol, a friend of hers and the president of NBC Sports. Winning the right to know the name, a condition of the prize, was that Ebersol never revealed it to anyone

BP, Think Simon says. Lol! As others have said, some of the song is about Warren Beatty but Carly refused to answer that question until he book came out. Just in case you're not familiar....he was a huge Actor back then and dated many starlets. Think Tom Cruise level from the 60s to the 80s. He married Annette Bening in 1992. But before he was a player's player. I think he was on more National Inquirers than many others. Just check out his Wikipedia. But Carly says it's about 3 guys so....

Love her!! I watched an interview that she did once and she mentioned that she had a stuttering problem as a child. Her mom would encourage Carly to basically "sing" the question because she didn't stutter when she sang. I thought that was very interesting. There may have been other things to help overcome that, but singing is what she specifically mentioned. Beautiful and talented!

I love how Black Pegasus can listen to a song from 1972 and identify with the lyrics. I also love how the men that Carly knew back then are arguing over who the song is about (it's about ME!) which only proves what a brilliant piece of songwriting it is. Iconic and timeless. I still have the vinyl "No Secrets" album I bought in 1972 when I was 16.
