" You're So Vain " is a song written in 1971 by Carly Simon and released in November 1972. It is one of the songs with which Simon is most identified, and upon its release, reached No. 1 in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The song is ranked at No. 92 on Billboard 's Greatest Songs of All Time.
Carley was a songwriter. All of the songs she did were her own. She did the music for a movie called Working Girl with Harrison Ford, Melanie Griffeth, and Sigourney Weaver
A Carly Simon classic, with some backing vocal assistance from Rollings Stones frontman, Mick Jaggar! She wrote so many good ones. More for you to listen to.
The Classic opening bass riff is played by Klaus Voormann. Carly credits Klaus for setting the table for the songs vibe. Klaus is most famous for designing the album cover for the Beatles 1966 masterpiece "Revolver'. Which Klaus won a Grammy Award. Klaus ran in the Beatles inner circle starting back in October of 1960. Two years before Ringo joined and 3 years before Beatlemania exploded in the United Kingdom. Klaus has recorded on many solo Beatles songs and remains their life long friend. RNB
Always had pride in this song, cause I am from and still live in Nova Scotia. A few videos ago Asia said she would like to go to Canada. If the opportunity comes up, my wife and I would be happy to put you up and show you some of the beauty and hospitality of the area. Love your chemistry you two rock, keep up the great vids!

I think that line about "YOU THINK THIS song is about you" is clever -- because it actually IS! It proves her point and dares him (whoever he is) to deny it. BRILLIANT
Back in 2010, MSM reported that Carly Simon had revealed the name of the person the song is about. On her album "Never Been Gone," Simon whispers a name during an instrumental break. The name is "David." Who could this be? Suspects include; David Geffen who founded Asylum records in 1971. Simon was with Elektra which merged with Asylum in 1972 and Geffen was put in charge. You're So Vain was released in 1972. Other David's of the era and in Simon's orbit are David Crosby of Crosby, Stills and Nash, and David Cassidy of The Partridge Family fame. Warren Beatty's mother was from Nova Scotia but no-one has been able to confirm if he flew his LearJet there to view a total eclipse of the sun. Also, another clue is found in a racehorse winning. My preference is toward David Geffen, as he's within her immediate circle. In the 70's everyone believed Mick Jagger or Warren Beatty, but Jagger's voice could be clearly heard on backing vocals (Jagger was a prolific backing singer, he is very generous with his time) and so is unlikely. Beatty was world famous for his vanity alone and so he held the highest rank of likely suspects.
Simon wrote it. Supposedly it's a composite of three men, one of whom is Warren Beatty. And rumor is that the "wife of a close friend" was David Bowie's wife at the time.
The last analysis I heard on this was that they were Warren Beatty, James Taylor, and David Geffen. But no one has ever agreed on anyone except Beatty.

After years of speculation about who the song was about... Some thought it was about Mick Jagger because he is singing background vocals. Many thought it was about Warren Beatty, who Carly confirmed to Billboard Magazine, she was referring to, in the second verse of the song. She did say in the interview it was about different relationships she had, and it was about more than one person.
The story goes that this was about Warren Beatty he was a huge star in the 60's and the 70's and quite the "hunk" at that time. lol...Warren was in lots of classic movies.
Carly is such a beautiful and talented singer/songwriter. My favorite song of her's is That's the Way I Always Heard It Should Be. Henry Lewis Gates explores her Caribbean slave ancestry on his genealogy show "Finding Your Roots." It's a great show about a great talent and a reminder that life is complicated.
Plenty of tunes to check out from Carly, plenty of great selections in the comments. If you dig on Carly, you must give another woman from the 70's a try - Carol King, you can do the entire album Tapestry, the whole album is awesome.
Each verse is about someone different. Likely identities include Mick Jagger, James Taylor and actor Warren Beatty. Warren was certain the song was about him. Jagger sang background on the song and Carly was married to James Taylor.
You probably have heard it or parts of it. The song has been covered more than 20 times and sampled more than 10 times. It is not about 1 person. Each verse is about a different guy. Supposedly the 2nd verse is about Warren Beatty.
Klaus voorman on bass, great bass intro on the song and Mick jagger background vocals. Been listening to this for nearly 50 years it never gets old, so,so good,!!
Faster Pussycat did a cover of this song during the hair metal days. Mick Jagger is singing backing vocals on the chorus which is ironic because many thought the song's lyrics were about him.
Janet Jackson had a song called Son of a Gun and she sampled You're So Vain. She's also one of only a few people to know who Carly was actually singing about.
This song was written about Mick jagger! She was his little Play thing back in the day. He and James Taylor sang back Up. Jagger didn't know it was About Him! Years later. He wrote a Song to her! It's on the Some Girls Album! It's called Star F! cker
A big hit and a favorite when I was a young kid - and Mick Jagger on vocals with her. Check out 'You Belong to Me,' 'Nobody Does It Better (The Spy Who Loved Me) (a Bond Theme) and 'That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be.'

Mick Jagger heard, and kinda invited himself to sing background, because he had the itch for Carly (and in some respects, she for him, though she never acted on it). I'm pretty much a classic rock/blues guy but I love Carly Simon. In her prime, her melodies she came up with were fantastic. Now, you must do more Carly songs that are in big contrast to "You're So Vain , the beautiful declaration of "Loving You Is the Right Thing to Do", and "No Secrets". Two of her best songs that are chock full of tasty melodies!
In the mid to late '90s there was a band named Marilyn Manson fronted by a guy who went by that name. Their most notorious record was produced by this guy named Trent Reznor, who was the front/main man for this band called Nine Inch Nails. After Reznor produced Manson, he released a song called "Starf•••rs, Inc.". The song included the line _"All our pain, how did you think we'd get by without you? You're so vain I bet you think this song is about you. Don't you? Don't you?"_ By that time he and Manson (the singer) had fallen out, and the public just _knew_ the song was about Manson. The funny thing is that a couple of years later Manson ended up doing some guest spots for NIN and wouldn't you know it, he made his entrance during "Starf•••rs, Inc.". I don't think those guys stayed friends, but it was funny to see.
I've been reading the comments heard (and 😍 LOVED) this song at least 1,000 times in my life (yeah, I'm old) and I am shocked 😯! I had no idea that Mick Jagger is singing in the background! Wow! That's a very cool thing to know! Thanks everybody!
For some reason I always get such a great feeling when the next generation appreciates the music I listened to when I was a kid.
how about older people appreciating the great music of today? seems like that is somewhat rarer....

George Harrison doing lead in the bridge.
You'll never unhear it when you do, but, that is Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones singing in the background with Carly.

Jagger had to be sticking it to one of his rivals in the vanity derby.

, the beautiful declaration of "Loving You Is the Right Thing to Do", and "No Secrets".
Great album, by the way. Everyone was in love with her cover photo
I've been reading the comments heard (and 😍 LOVED) this song at least 1,000 times in my life (yeah, I'm old) and I am shocked 😯! I had no idea that Mick Jagger is singing in the background! Wow! That's a very cool thing to know! Thanks everybody!
