@@antimatter2380 - if you look into the backstory behind that song, it was inspired by a time when Steven Tyler was at a nightclub and they were checking out a "girl" from behind thinking about hitting on "her", but when "she" turned around it was Vince Neil from Motley Crew.

You definitely need to give it another listen and pull up the lyrics. There were clues all the way through. "In a dark brown voice, she said Lola." "I can't understand why she walked like a woman and talked like a man." "Girls will be boys and boys will be girls. It's a mixed up, muggled up, shook up world except for Lola." and the big one, "I know what I am, and I'm glad I'm a man, and so was Lola."

Even the description of the setting foreshadows the twist at the end. The champagne tastes like cherry cola, they dance under "electric candlelight"...nothing is as it seems. Especially Lola.🤣
Such clever lyrics. I love the subtle line at the end about how the protagonist had just left home a week ago and had never kissed a woman before. Because even after his encounter with Lola, he still hadn't kissed a woman.

One of the fun things about art... doubly so for stories and music... is that we perceive it with a lens honed by our own experiences. What we get out of it can be very different than what the artist had in mind or was inspired by at the time. It can be a jarring experience when we realize our own perception is so far off from artistic messaging. Or even those times when art is crafted in a way to be undefined and reflect many different messages - to discover other interpretations that differ from ours.
But this one... this one had a clear message. It was missed.

I met her in a club down in old Soho
Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like coca cola
    C-O-L-A, Cola
She walked up to me and she asked me to dance
I asked her her name and in a dark brown voice she said Lola
    L-O-L-A, Lola
    La-la-la-la Lola
Well, I'm not the world's most physical guy
But when she squeezed me tight she nearly broke my spine
    Oh my Lola
    La-la-la-la Lola
Well, I'm not dumb but I can't understand
Why she walked like a woman but talked like a man
    Oh my Lola
    La-la-la-la Lola
    La-la-la-la Lola
Well, we drank champagne and danced all night
    Under electric candlelight
She picked me up and sat me on her knee
And said "Dear boy, won't you come home with me?"
Well, I'm not the world's most passionate guy
But when I looked in her eyes, well I almost fell for my Lola
    La-la-la-la Lola
    La-la-la-la Lola
    Lola
    La-la-la-la Lola
    La-la-la-la Lola
    I pushed her away
    I walked to the door
    I fell to the floor
I got down on my knees
Then I looked at her and she at me
Well, that's the way that I want it to stay
And I always want it to be that way for my Lola
    La-la-la-la Lola
Girls will be boys and boys will be girls
It's a mixed up, muddled up, shook up world, except for Lola
    La-la-la-la Lola
Well, I left home just a week before
And I'd never ever kissed a woman before
But Lola smiled and took me by the hand
And said "Dear boy, I'm gonna make you a man"
Well, I'm not the world's most masculine man
    But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man
    And so is Lola
    La-la-la-la Lola
    La-la-la-la Lola

      @UmpireStrikesBack 21 день тому +5

@@kingcosworth2643 The original lyric is “coca cola” they were forced to change it. Here is an explanation:
Written by singer Ray Davies, Lola is about a relationship between a man and a “woman” who turns out to be a transvestite.
But it wasn’t this gender confusion that worried the BBC. The song was banned for including the words “coca-cola” which was against their policy on product placement.
Davies had to interrupt the band’s American tour to fly back to London to re-record the lyric as “cherry-cola” for the single release.

Oh my goodness, I remember when this song came out in 1970, it was banned on the BBC because it mentioned coca cola re the product name!! The Kinks have so many fantastic songs, such as 'You Really Got Me', 'All of the Day and All of the Night', 'Waterloo Sunset', 'Days', 'Tired of Waiting' and 'Where Have All the Good Times Gone'. Thanks for your reaction. 😊😊

There is a follow-up song to Lola called Destroyer by the Kinks.
Destroyer tells what happened the next day with Lola. It is sung in the same tune as You Really Got Me also by the Kinks.
You have to listen to all three songs becase it's a trilligy. You'll never be the same.
    My favorite is Destroyer.
And when you come back down and want a tamer song by the Kinks. Come Dancing. It's actually a sweet song dedicated to his sister. It's innocent.

There seems more than one kind of Lola. the ladyboy ones with the feminine faces and bumps in assorted places (they tend to be out a night (clubs) I have worked with the other kind of butchish females that you think are transistioning into something else. It doesnt bother me - and I dont really like "girly girls" but I get on better with intelligent, slightly tomboy girls socially.

This is a master class in "dodging the censors".
The few things that give away the "secret" can be explained away, or missed entirely.
    "I know what I am, and I'm glad I'm a Man, and so's Lola".
Well, Lola is also glad he's a man. I mean she's a woman, so... 🧐
"When she squeezed me tight, she nearly broke my spine".
Well, she's a passionate lady, and she works out...
"She picked me up and put me on her knee".
Like I said... she works out... 🤨
