It looks "still sane" from our perspective now, but my mother and her friends thought we were in our handbasket way down the road [to hell] at the time. They were born in the Great Depression, had grown up during WWII, spent their young adult years in the '50s, then kablooey - right when they were bringing up kids the music changed from harmonious and lyrical to hard rock, college campuses went crazy, cities lit on fire, there was another horrific war and social mores changed drastically. By the time this song came out things had calmed down but they were still shellshocked. I loved this time, but my mother was usually frustrated by my enthusiasm. It does look downright "Norman Rockwell" now though!
@theodoreritola7641 Turned 10 in 1970 and 20 in 1980, so the 70's were MY childhood and teenage years. Great time to be alive, great music and great collaboration between races. My heart breaks for the things my sons missed.
Especially the songwriter/performers. Melodic "music" in general is dead, just like everything else with this stinking new generation. The world is doomed ... now get off my lawn ya punks! 😠
I’m 66 yrs old and I have always appreciated a good man! I had one I treated him like my king and he always treated me like his queen! He is not physically with me anymore but his love always is!
My favorite Carly Simon song, thanks for taking me back to 1977, I was 18. It was my first concert, my 2nd was the Eagles, then Bob Seger concert. We had the greatest music back then.
There's a great live performance of Carly Simon & James Taylor doing Mockingbird back in the 70's. Fun song. Great energy. Really shows their personalities.
Always loved Carly Simon. As a child, she had a horrible stuttering problem. At the dinner table, (as the story goes), she couldn't get out the words: "Please, pass the potatoes" without stuttering. Her father told her to sing those words instead of speaking them. History was made. Carly Simon is an amazing singer!! 💜
My favorite song by Carly Simon is called You belong to me,she was married to James Taylor and her father is the founder of the publishing company Simon and Shuster
Wow your comment just pierced the recesses of my mind to when I was about 6 or 7. I used to sing the chorus 'You belong to me, you belong you belong ' Of course I didn't know what I was singing about or even who sung the song. I am going to go listen to it now. Thank you for bringing back that memory to me! 💜
Carly Simon, one of the great singer songwriters of that era, other iconic female artists Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt, Crystal Gayle, Maria Muldaur were on my radar in the 70’s, they all had their signature sounds and were fire, as you said, a different time, a feel good vibe. A spring day with the windows open, a little breeze and my choice of these ladies on the turn table, good times.
I spent an entire semester in a dorm room in 1977, falling asleep each night to this song (single) played by my room mate. Of course, Cary became a missionary...
When it comes to the title songs of James Bond films, Shirley Bassey is the GOAT. She sang 3 of them! "Diamonds are Forever" was my favorite! It brings chills to your skin.
Your points on romance are valid. I grew up with Carly & other great female (and male singers of course) singers. Yes, many had problematic relationships, but we believed in love. Now, it seems so much more transactional not based in feeling.
This was written by the wonderful composer Marvin Hamlisch. He was an EGOT winner (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony). I explored his catalogue of music. He was so versatile. He composed the songs for the musical A Chorus Line; the score for The Sting, The Way We Were, Ice Castles and Sophie’s Choice. You should listen to Barbra Streisand sing the theme from The Way We Were.
Us "hippies" in the early 70's really were blessed....and didn't know it. We were an unfortunate result of the horrible years of the Vietnam war, who loved peace, love, and the human connection. The best days of my life !
Try her song You Belong to Me. It's a song written by Michael McDonald and Carly Simon. The Doobie Brothers released it first, but Carly's release captures the passion.
Sheena Easton has the honor of being the only singer whose silhouette was used while singing the title song. She sang "For Your Eyes Only" in the movie of the same name. When she auditioned her song, the film makers were so impressed with her appearance that Sheena got to appear in the opening credits.
Love me some Carly, her vocals are excellent along with her lyrics. If I'm remembering her history she has a touch of color in her DNA, a great grandmother. Anyhow she's awesome. Thanks B.P.👍
It’s crazy that the music back in the 80s and beyond is so much more superior than anything today. I truly don’t think that people will be listening to anything in the last 20 years ago up to today in the next 40-50 years. Just my opinion. Carly’s voice was so beautiful and kinda hypnotic. I love her song “Coming Around Again”.
The next Carly Simon song to listen to is from this same outdoor concert is "Coming Around Again." Another Live Version of it is from the Grand Central. Both are Inspirational and have an entirely different feel.
You wouldn't know it by the video that she suffered from stage fright. This show originally aired on HBO, and I must have watched it a dozen times because it was so good. She didn't write this song, but she nailed it. I ❤ Carly Simon.
Absolutely fantastic song by Carly. One of the best Bond themes. Now, do me a great big favor, BP, react to Paul McCartney's "Wings" Bond theme "Live and Let Die." Pretty please!!!🤣
Her music raised me from elementary school ❤. She is so incredibly gorgeous and talented. Suffers from high anxiety preforming. Truly a star. Great commentary!
Ok, Pegasus. We used to sing about love in a much different fashion, way back in the 2oth century. It used to be that writing a song was like a like a love letter to someone you hoped would receive your message. Then, it was set to music and sung with meaning softly into their ear. Music and the message in today's music isn't worth listening to, so our ears are closed to hearing it. For a number of reasons. But Carly Simon is a treasure. Listen to the audio for the song YOU BELONG TO ME, which features Michael McDonald. He co-wrote the song with her and even recorded his own track of it. In addition, he was on the backing vocals of her single. The video for COMING AROUND AGAIN is one of her best. And you will fall even more in love with as she explains during the song. Finally, her collaboration with ex-husband James Taylor on MOCKINGBIRD expresses the pure joy of the love they felt for each other at the time. Watch and learn. Keep going and enjoy the music.
I love Carly Simon!! She has such a beautiful voice! My sister looks just like her and so when I'm talking to my sister it's always a little strange because she looks just like her! LOL! Well, I wish I could have seen her in concert and especially this concert because it's just so amazing!! Thanks BP!
Back in the 80's, my parents had all the old James Bond themes on vinyl, and this song always stood out. This one, You Only Live Twice by Nancy Sinatra, and All Time High by Rita Coolidge are probably my favorite Bond Themes.
~ Please check out the playful performance of "Mockingbird" that she performed with her then husband, James Taylor! It shows a cute, flirtatious side of both of them. 😄 It was up there in the recommendation box after the video.
A recently found (very rare) performance of _That's the Way I've Always Heard it Should Be_ has recently surfaced here on YT, and very popular with the "reactors".
@@andreaschmall5560 Yes, I know that she has a home on the Vineyard. So do James Taylor (who she was once married to), Barak Obama, Dan Acroyd, and Bill Murray. Some others who have since passed away, James Cagney, Walter Cronkite, and John Belushi.
My favorite Carly Simon song. There are some great female early 70s singers. I know you've already done Carol King but she has more. Also there are some great early 70s Cher out there too. Half Breed and Gypsys, Tramps and Thieves come to mind
Music from my era of the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s spoke of great love, the raw emotions of love and the joy of love. The lyrics had real meaning that we could relate to in our own lives. I miss those years. Love your reactions.
Carly had a lot of hits. Another of my favorites is “You’re So Vain.” She was recently on one of those genealogy shows and found out she’s 1/4 Afro-Cuban.
Listen to Mockingbird. She sang it with her husband at the time, James Taylor. They are so joyful singing the song! She’s supposedly has stage fright but when I’ve seen her sing live she seems very at ease.
Absolutely love Carly Simon when she can take the song “itsy-bitsy spider “and make it a song for everybody. Oh my goodness and she did it in this concert.❤
BP, the music only reflects the culture and the society of that specific period of time! If back then, especially the 80's, music was to be so good, so colorful, i imagined how life was in those days!
She's so soulful. My parents played her music a lot and my Dad always remarked on how beautiful she is. So thank God for my parents great taste in music. Check out Janice Joplin live anything will do She's always amazing. Great reaction and Peace out ✌️ ☮️ 🙏
she is my goddess. you should also react to her performance of "vengeance". i was at home, watching a music program like 'the midnight special', or some such thing, when she came on. i was 18 or 19, and she was about as fine as it was possible for a woman to be...and when it was over, i just sat there with my jaw on the floor.
One of my favorites from Carly is Coming Around Again from the same concert. I blasted that song while bawling my eyes out when my marriage fell apart. Turns out she was right ❤
Ben Taylor, Carley Simon and James Taylor's son has some amazing music. He said his Mom taught him lyrics and his Dad taught him music. Oh Brother, Wicked Way, Nothing I can do 🔥 💋
She did a song called coming around again for movie heartburn starring Meryl streep, jack Nicholson. She did let tge river run that plats at tge end if movie working girl starring meline Griffith, Harrison ford, sigorney weaver and joan Cusack.
Imagine not only getting to attend this concert, but then going home in a world that was still sane. We didn't know how good we had it.

Wow! Cher is 78, Carly Simon is 81 and Carol King is 82. What the heck? That's crazy.
Time flies that'll for sure!

This whole Martha's Vineyard concert was one of the best concerts I've ever seen. Carly was on top of her game.
I wore out the VHS tape I had of this concert.
I’ve never seen the concert (living in Europe), but I’ve got the CD and probably listened to it a thousand times 😊
I saw her live in Oaks Bluff once. Her voice was great!
I watch this concert all the time.
70's music had a meaning, and singers meant it while they perform.
Especially the songwriter/performers. Melodic "music" in general is dead, just like everything else with this stinking new generation. The world is doomed ... now get off my lawn ya punks! 😠
She was married to James Taylor and she was part of the family members that owned Simon and Schuster publishers.
Isn't she great? Love Carly Simon.
Carli is my girl 👍 😊 I love love love this song ❤❤❤❤❤❤

The greatest!!❤❤❤
She is such a great singer
Yes we did--and you have great taste in music. 👍
My grandaughter is named after her. I played her all through my daughters childhood ❤️
I sing this to my husband several times a week. 😍
There will Never be time on music like the 60's and 70's
“You’re So Vain”, “Anticipation”, “That’s the Way I Always Heard It Should Be”, “Let the River Run”, “You Belong to Me”, “Coming Around Again”

I've always loved Carly's voice and I love her naturally curly hair
The 70s just HIT SOOOOO GOOOOD I WAS 16 IN 1977

Caryl Simon is one of. The greatest singer songwriters of all time I just love her. That was the hippie era we were into love

She had extreme stage freight unfortunately! But when she was in.... nobody does it better! 😊
Carley Simon best Theme Bond song along with live and let die.

Iconic song from iconic singer/songwriter.
As you said it’s about James Bond. He’s the person that nobody does it better than. This song always gives me goosebumps when I hear it.

Carly is one of those singers that I'd happily listen to discography. So many good songs and a real talent
