Carly Simon co-wrote this song. It's her song. She was probably saying that she heard it on the radio that day. That was Art Garfunkel talking to George Harrison.
I thought it was George Harrison with Art Garfunkel! Thanks for confirming that. I always loved this song. I was back in high school when she released this hit.
ive got tears in my eyes - i love carly simon, all my life - she is 80 yrs old now i think - i want to go back to the 70s-it was the worst of times, it was the best of times
Carly Simon and that song was my favorite as a kid!! I still try to sing it to this day. I love her and can't believe she is 80! I can't believe I'm 70 either!!! I miss those days!
From 72 on, I sang to the radio every day. Thought I would be a singer one day, and so did my friends Broken dreams, broken hearts, beautifully sad memories.
She's got Art Garfunkel and George Harrison singing backup. She was a musical genius. Her melodies are legendary and James Taylor was fortunate to be married to her shortly after this. She was rock royalty✌️😎
Carly Simon is the daughter of Richard Simon, co-founder of the publishing firm: Simon and Shuster. Her mother was Andrea Louise Heinemann Schuster who was bi-racial (Jewish and Black) who was a civil rights advocate as well as an Opera singer. So your imagining that she resembled Halle Berry wasn't that far fetched. I grew up in the sixties and so I heard this song on the radio when it first came out. There was so much good music from different genres and when this song played it made me sit up and take notice. Someone different with a deep message to ponder. This song captures the traditional path for young adults of our era being challenged by the ideas and influences of the "hippie" movement. That being to question authority and ask "why" are we supposed to do it "this way?" Carly grew up in a very privileged life style on Long Island. She's brilliant, poetic and beautiful.
Song still gets me in my feels over 50 years later. Song put her on the map in 1971 and won the Grammy award for Best New Artist. She's one of the best singer songwriters of the 70s. She was formerly married to James Taylor
Carly was on Finding Your Roots and did indeed find out that her great grandmother was Black and never told anyone. So she is Ashkenazy Jewish and Black! You nailed it!
Same!! I'm 63, this was my first album ever purchased on my own. I heard the song on an old PBS show "The Great American Dream Machine" and became a huge fan after.
Carly Simon and James Taylor were married but eventually split, due in large part to his struggle with a serious addiction to heroin. It was a beautiful pairing and a heartbreaking split. Their chemistry together was off the chain; you can see it in the footage of their performance together of "Mockingbird". Definitely worth a watch, both of them are immensely talented but together, they were electrifying.
I saw an interview with Dan Rather a few years back and she said she still loves James, as she’s always called him. He refuses to speak to her even after all these years.
Very well said. I think James has always felt like she should have stayed with him and helped him through his addiction and recovery... and on the flip side, I believe that Carly felt that if he truly loved her, he would have fought harder to get clean. I'm not saying that either one of them was right or wrong. Only they know the struggle and how each of them handled it. To this day, she says that she'll always love him, in her heart of hearts, but he hasn't spoken to her since the split. They really were an incredible duo and it seemed like they were truly meant to be together. It's such a shame that it didn't work out in the end. That performance of Mockingbird will always be one of my all-time favorites.
In 1971 it was the status quo to marry in your very early twenties-- not a lot of life between your parents home and the marital home. Sometimes, often even, straight from one to the other. Living together, or "shacking up", was simply not done, you got married first-- a massive shift made rather quickly in the early seventies. Ultimately, this is a song reflecting the sexual revolution started in the late 60's-- the women's movement (education, career, independence) was just getting a foothold. ✌
I completely agree with you! This song harkens me back to those days. I remember in 1972 telling my parents that I was moving in with my boyfriend and their response was: "Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?" It was just the way of their generation.
@@CharCanuck14 Although I don’t agree marriage is necessary before living together (I’m 70), couples should have a serious discussion about their commitment to the relationship and what each of their intentions are from the beginning. Birth control is not 100% guaranteed to work.

Yes, Carly Simon wrote this song at a time in the 1960s and 70s where women had fewer choices and marriage could become construed as a cage. Women could not get a credit card in their own name. They could get fired for getting pregnant, they could not take legal action against workplace sexual harassment, they paid more in health insurance etc. The pressure to get married then was enormous and any profession were women were allowed to enter was presumed to be something she did until such time as she got married. So a bit more going on in this song than just the love aspect.

I saw clips from that episode! It turns out that her grandmother was 40% Black, but the family never knew it until she took the DNA test for the show. Carly said that she wasn't totally surprised, because her grandmother was always very secretive about parts of her ancestery. Apparently, she came to the US from Cuba in the 1950s during the era of Jim Crow laws, which was likely why she kept that part of her heritage a secret.

Carly Simon was asked to do an episode of “Who do you think you are “, and she found out that she has African American heritage on her mother’s side somewhere. It’s a great episode! She was a fabulous folk singer! Her music was always my go to when I needed to slow my brain and life down.
No. You're not delusional. You're very astute. Carly didn't learn of her complete family history until fairly recently. Her talent and beauty are undeniable.
The significant line is "their children hate them for the things their not, they hate themselves for what they are". Showing the generational gap which has children imagining themselves righteous judges. with little experience, and the adults having experienced enough to feel overly guilty for flaws that are inherent in humans. Those same children will then grow up to realize that over the course of time, they themselves will have done things that they cannot change, and also bear the weight of responsibility for their actions. The cycle goes on. Knowledge without Wisdom is dangerous.
One of my favorite songs from my younger years . I got married at 20 years old. We lasted 20 years and it was after we finally had a baby he punched out ! That’s the epitome of selfish . I’m now 68 and never remarried raised my daughter on my own . She’s a good human so I did something right . I miss being hugged but I’m good ! Peace out!
As a woman that grew up in the 60s & 70s this was absolutely “the way we believed it was supposed to be”. Graduate from high school, start college, & get married. I’m soooo glad that girls now have the freedom to take the time they need to figure out what they want to do with their lives without those antiquated stereotypes.
I was expecting my first child when this beautiful song came out. We only had radio, or our own records. Every time this song came on, I'd cry. I think every young woman should listen before they make a commitment. Thanks for playing Carli.❤"It Keeps You Running". Love your channel!!
Back in the good ole days when all the music didn't follow "the hit formula". When a singer could hit all those tension notes, when musicians could play with that cool tension and release dynamic.
This song is from her 1st album released in 1971. Still establishing her career, leading an independent life. Don't hear it as cynical or sarcastic, but soul searching working out the complexities of the changes of becoming an adult facing new stages of life. of By 1974 she was married to James Taylor and a new mother. She released the album Hotcakes. The tone is so different, more settled, focused on her true love and more domesticated - for example, Mind on My Man, Safe and Sound, and Forever My Love. Carly's musical arc spanned several decades, all documenting her evolution through her life stages and changes. Always brilliant in expressing her thoughts.
Great reaction. You got the lyrics. She caught your eye, definitely after she started really singing. I had a little crush on Carly when I was young. You understand..
Sadly Richard Simon died with extreme debt. He couldn't leave the S&S fortune for his family. They were well off, but the all Simon children had to work for a living.
I always enjoy your reactions to the old songs. Carly was quite the songwriter, and your thoughts after hearing her lyrics was interesting. That’s why I enjoy hearing what you have to say especially on songs from my youth. I think your interpretation was spot on.
This is her song she’s a great songwriter who had horrible stage fright , but great voice and was music royalty on her own & for being married to James Taylor. She has at least a half dozen songs that are great. All the men had crushes on her & all the women wanted to be like her. She is like a 1/8 black her grandma passed . That was Art Garfunkel and the Late Great George Harrison of the Beatles . Mockingbird duet with Taylor is Joyful
I graduated High School in 1976. I went on to college and became one of the first paralegals in Cincinnati. Then I went on to law school and was one of a small minority of women in law school. I was one of the generation of women born in the 60's and 70's who wanted more than a traditional marriage and becoming a housewife. There is nothing wrong with doing that, but you have to make that as your choice - not have your vocation/occupation thrust upon you. I think this is the message of Carly's song here. Although the song is about a woman who was questioning getting married, she ultimately didn't do anything but get married. Again, nothing wrong with that, but the song makes it sound like she might have wanted other choices. It was all about the choice. My generation of women worked hard to make sure women in this country, in the generations following us, would have such a choice. And they do!
The descriptions and story telling in this song are so amazing. She is so iconic. I’ve been a fan since the 70s. Great reaction, kind of funny seeing you fan girling a bit. 😂 but she is beautiful and a beautiful voice right? Anticipation is another good song to check out.
One of my all time favorite singers since the 70s, and yes, she is gorgeous. Often having remarks about her big mouth (compared her to Mick Jagger) written about, but I say it made for a bigger more beautiful smile. She had horrible stage fright, and after an anxiety attack at a concert here in Pittsburgh, she rarely toured again. Check out her “My Romance” album filled with standards like “Wee Small Hours of the Morning.” Stunning.
RE: caged. I was extremely lucky. I fell in love with a man who had been raised in a home where every child was expected to achieve academically & personally, give back to the community &, almost as importantly, be funny. He had 4 highly intelligent older sisters & he grew up seeing them do all of those things. He turned out well.
What a gut-wrenching song. Saddest line: “I’ll never learn to be just me first by myself.” How in the hell can you be in a long term relationship without self awareness?
Air force I heard Carly singing He walked onto the yacht and all the cooks in the officers mess singing with her. Good memory. I was a WAAF au. Con-grates on the many marriage years. Work wise in the 1960 I was working, cutting wood. and housrwork, no sleep ins

You gave a great take on married life. I am so glad you've made it through the 10 years of ups and downs. Too many people call it quits at the first down to come along. Another deeply meaningful singer/songwriter you should check out is Carole King. She's written so many hits others recorded too. "You've Got a Friend" (James Taylor) and "A Natural Woman" (Aretha Franklin) are two of the must listens by her.

BP, you weren't trippin about her looking like Haley Berry from the side! It was the lighting and her natural complexion, and the way her hair laid across her face that caused her eyes and cheeks especially to appear to look like her!
Carly was one of the very many very talented Jewish American artists who presented the world with a gift. The 60’s and 70’s were their decades. Neil Diamond, Neal Sedaka, Simon and Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, Carole King, Carly Simon.
That IS Simon from Simon and Garfunkel but, the other guy is the ONE AND ONLY GREAT GEORGE HARRISON!!!❤❤❤...from The Beatles! She was amongst her friends at that time and, yes, she is so extremely talented that she heard that song and played it that evening! Now, can anyone tell me WHO today can do that? No one!🎉
If you want to see another Carly Simon performance check out TOUCHED BY THE SUN. Probably my favorite Simon song and the official video is killer sexy.
There's a great story in her autobiography about this song. She wrote the melody for a documentary on some environmental cause like protecting a river or a lake or something. She had an old camp councilor friend from her music camp days who was super emotionally intelligent and he basically took one look at her family and wrote these lyrics. He went on to become a very successful writer/song writer, and not just for her.
Anyone who hadn't heard of Carly Simon back in the day eventually discovered her via her song from the iconic Heinz Ketchup commercial. "Anticipation" - I can't see a bottle of ketchup and not think of that song! BP, just think of "Simon Says" when you want to pronounce her last name "Simone."😄

Carly Simon was asked to do an episode of “Who do you think you are “, and she found out that she has African American heritage on her mother’s side somewhere. It’s a great episode! She was a fabulous folk singer! Her music was always my go to when I needed to slow my brain and life down.
One of the greatest live performances ever.
Carly is such a talented singer/song writer. She tells a story that you can visually see in your mind. Love songs like that.
She had GREAT respect from the industry’s best singer/songwriters and musicians
No. You're not delusional. You're very astute. Carly didn't learn of her complete family history until fairly recently. Her talent and beauty are undeniable.
The significant line is "their children hate them for the things their not, they hate themselves for what they are". Showing the generational gap which has children imagining themselves
righteous judges. with little experience, and the adults having experienced enough to feel overly guilty for flaws that are inherent in humans. Those same children will then grow up to
realize that over the course of time, they themselves will have done things that they cannot change, and also bear the weight of responsibility for their actions. The cycle goes on.
Knowledge without Wisdom is dangerous.
And wisdom comes with experience, which often results from bad decisions. Hence, "live and learn." :)
She is an amazing talent! Always loved her
One of my favorite songs from my younger years . I got married at 20 years old. We lasted 20 years and it was after we finally had a baby he punched out ! That’s the epitome of selfish . I’m now 68 and never remarried raised my daughter on my own . She’s a good human so I did something right . I miss being hugged but I’m good ! Peace out!
Great song... and the cameo with Art Garfunkle and George Harrison.... Priceless...
Yet the divorce rates are way up. And now ironically, guys are just tired of the games and not dating at all.
I was expecting my first child when this beautiful song came out. We only had radio, or our own records. Every time this song came on, I'd cry. I think every young woman should listen before they make a commitment. Thanks for playing Carli.❤"It Keeps You Running". Love your channel!!
Was a big fan of Carly Simon. Still am. She has a hauntingly beautiful voice.
Back in the good ole days when all the music didn't follow "the hit formula". When a singer could hit all those tension notes, when musicians could play with that cool tension and release dynamic.
Musicians do it a lot more now, you just stopped paying attention
Please react to her and James Taylor singing Mockingbird!!!
You are correct Carly was super beautiful and should have been put into the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame me a long time ago!!.,🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️💔💔💔💔
Powerful song. She's one of my favorites. Thanks for this reaction.
I forgot about Hotcakes!
“Their children hate them for the things they’re not. They hate themselves for what they are.” WOW.
Great reaction. You got the lyrics. She caught your eye, definitely after she started really singing. I had a little crush on Carly when I was young. You understand..
I was born January 1970, grew up listening to her, one of my mom's favorite artists. She's a breath of fresh air and so talented.
You break it down well. Ty. Love it!!
It is Art Garfunkel, but it is George Harrison he is talking to. Her maternal grandmother was Cuban of Pardo heritage.
Never knew that
Carly Simon is probably my favorite female singer/songwriter of the 70s. I listened to her all of the time.
Her father is the Simon of Simon & Schuyler book publishing- so worth 100s of Millions
*Schuster
Simon and Schuster
iPads and self correct, annoying aren't they, lol.
Sadly Richard Simon died with extreme debt. He couldn't leave the S&S fortune for his family. They were well off, but the all Simon children had to work for a living.
What's wrong with working for a living??
I always enjoy your reactions to the old songs. Carly was quite the songwriter, and your thoughts after hearing her lyrics was interesting. That’s why I enjoy hearing what you have to say especially on songs from my youth. I think your interpretation was spot on.
Oh I grew up listening to her, Along with the Supremes
The STOnes,ETC! She is Wonderful!!
I’ve loved Carly Simon since my high school years in the 60-70s. This song just seems the embodiment of a woman’s feelings of regret.
Yes, it is a magnificent performance from Carly.
I liked your reaction comments and how you described your own personal response:
This is her song she’s a great songwriter who had horrible stage fright , but great voice and was music royalty on her own & for being married to James Taylor. She has at least a half dozen songs that are great. All the men had crushes on her & all the women wanted to be like her. She is like a 1/8 black her grandma passed . That was Art Garfunkel and the Late Great George Harrison of the Beatles . Mockingbird duet with Taylor is Joyful
Carly Simon's friend and frequent collaborator Jacob Brackman wrote the lyrics and Simon wrote the music.
Close!! Art Garfunkel, and George Harrison (of Beatles)
When I was a teen, I would go to record stores just to look at Carly Simon album covers!
I absolutely appreciate your sincere,heart- felt reactions!!!🫶💖🎵🎶🥰☮️
Yes, Art Garfunkel. The other is George Harrison of the Beatles. 🙂
Saddest line: “I’ll never learn to be just me first by myself.”
How in the hell can you be in a long term relationship without self awareness?
@@ceceliarussell-jayne2447 Marriage to a narcissist makes that fairly inevitable. Not saying JT was a narcissist, just generally speaking.
Who falls off at the end. I always stay to the end. That's out of respect for you and all the hard work you do. Thanks so much!
the more I watch your videos the more I realise that you are so talentedin video making
One of her best in my opinion but personally the studio version takes it to another level.
Air force I heard Carly singing He walked onto the yacht and all the cooks in the officers mess singing with her. Good memory. I was a WAAF au. Con-grates on the many marriage years. Work wise in the 1960 I was working, cutting wood. and housrwork, no sleep ins
Great reaction!
Glad you checked this one out. It's been one of my favorite CS videos for years and talk about layers of relationship complication.
Not to mention she looks exquisite!
If you haven’t heard Harry Chapin, try hearing his song Taxi. He even did a sequel to the song.
Yes! Listen to Taxi and the follow up song Sequel. What a master lyricist.
Carly road around in a lot of taxi's too.
Hey @BlackPegasus Carly did a rendition of 'The Itsy Bitsy Spider' decades ago your little one would likely love... wont lie lol... it would make for a priceless Daddy Daughter reaction lol but thay being said you guys doing your own rendition also came to mind as something could to really kewl
Parent to parent tho its a song i loved sharing with my kids and thought you might enjoy it too!💚🫂💚
I agree and the song" Itsy Bitsy Spider- Coming Around Again" is easy to find on video because it's from that same outdoor Martha Vineyard's concert where " You're so Vain" which you already reviewed.
BP, you weren't trippin about her looking like Haley Berry from the side! It was the lighting and her natural complexion, and the way her hair laid across her face that caused her eyes and cheeks especially to appear to look like her!
My era of music we were crazy about Carly , this is her song !
Carly Simon is one of the great songwriters. Always loved her music...still do.
Carly was one of the very many very talented Jewish American artists who presented the world with a gift. The 60’s and 70’s were their decades. Neil Diamond, Neal Sedaka, Simon and Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, Carole King, Carly Simon.
Can you believe Carly is turning 80 yrs old on the 25th of June? She is a beautiful woman, and still looks damn good as she heads into the 80s.
Thanks for this, I had forgotten how beautiful she was
That IS Simon from Simon and Garfunkel but, the other guy is the ONE AND ONLY GREAT GEORGE HARRISON!!!❤❤❤...from The Beatles! She was amongst her friends at that time and, yes, she is so extremely talented that she heard that song and played it that evening! Now, can anyone tell me WHO today can do that? No one!🎉
Thank you for being open and sharing your life/insights with us. Much respect.
This is the first song I ever heard Carly Simon sing. It is still on my Top 3 of her songs.
