Your Face Will Change! For Better Or Worse...

  • The bones in our bodies are much more dynamic than we think, so when it comes to our breathing and mouth posture this is a big deal to me.
People with myofunctional issues are more likely to have longer faces with flatter features. At the same time, they are more likely to have issues like TMJ pain and sleep apnea.
The good thing is, no matter how old you are, it's never too late to make changes to your breathing and tongue posture through myofunctional therapy.
The best time to have the greatest changes to facial structures is in growing children - we can literally guide the growth of their faces by helping them change their habits.
In adults, bone is regenerating and remodeling all the time too. This means that we can also guide these changes - it's just slower and subtler. Still, if you make changes when you are 30 it's better than when you are 40 or 50 years old.

    I'm telling ya'll.. this works.
I have an asymmetrical face. One side is more developed than the other. Of you have the same issue, chew with the other side of your mouth, keep mewing and do facial exercises. It's been 4 months and my face is starting to even out and I haven't had any health problems ever since.
Put your tongue up the roof of your mouth, teeth not touching, close your lips, and breath through your nose.

I know this works, I was searching for something else and something popped up about nasal breathing, I found it fascinating and did more research. I started doing it 24/7, fortunately I had no trouble doing this, I know this is a strange thing to mention but when it happened to me I took nasal breathing very seriously, I have always been a nose picker, with 24 hours I stopped because my nose was completely clear, their was nothing to pick, next I was having difficulty getting in and out of my car, very soon this went away also if I had to get on my knees to pick something up I had to grab something to help me get up, not any more I just bend over and pick it up, my posture is now extremely good, I sleep like a log, when walking up hill its a lot easier, I'm not stopping to get my breath, their is lots more but I think you get the gist, just to prove its never too late I'm 77. and of course it good for your well being, sadly I tried to tell my younger brother about this, he just stared at me and said don't be stupid everybody breaths through their mouth, he has bad posture, a terrible temper and other issues/

27 this year and just found out that I have a tongue thrust from breathing through my mouth. My ortho was the one to point it out. Now my doctor is sending me for a sleep test. Hi Sarah, this something that is never mentioned on Nasal Breathing Benefits, it worked for me and I'm in my 70's
I am a band leader and often people would say that I was not speaking very clearly, one woman even offered me elocution lessons! it never happens now my diction is good, also I don't speak as fast, my closet friend says my speaking is much clearer, I put this down to nasal breathing and tongue thrust.

I've contributed here before, I nasal breath 24/7 keeping my mouth shut even when I smile I don't show my teeth, about a year ago I was in town and two young women approached me to promote something, I smiled at them and said no thanks, one of them looked at me and said what a lovely smile.

I'm really just trying to figure this out. I noticed that while meditating I'd have increased gas and burping. But if I placed my tongue differently that would go away. Through putting tongue positioning and breathing in the search bar I became aware of mewing. I'm continuing to learn as I go. Who would have thought tongue placement was this important though? But it's extremely important.

Hi Sarah, I think i don't get the probably most important thing. --> Where the TIP of the tongue should be, when at rest and when we swallow? Should the tip of the tongue be on the incisive papilla, or behind that, on the palatine ruggae? I'm trying to correct my tongue position by myself with pretty good results because i think that i'm good to subliminally remember where my tongue should be, and my breath (and other stuff like posture and relaxing) is MUCH better since i'm doing that (keeping the tongue on the palate) BUT my main problem is the fact that i can't understand if the tongue should "finish" at the incisive papilla ( the "n" spot is "the spot" ? ) or if behind that, with the tip of the tongue resting "into" the palatine ruggae ? So basically my question is : where is the spot? On the incisive papilla or palatine ruggae?

    • @sarahkh12
      @sarahkh12  6 років тому +8

I have noticed improvements! However, I’ve noticed that the lower half of my face is slightly longer than average, from what I’m guessing is a result of my mouth breathing. Hi Sarah, I'm 22 years old and have mouth breathed my whole life. I also have an underbite which I now attribute to the mouth breathing. Unfortunately I had orthodontic work throughout my childhood and teenage years, but they never thought anything of the mouth breathing. Recently I have been practicing nose breathing with my tongue on the roof of my mouth, but this gets exhausting and I can't sleep like this as the force keeps me awake. Do you have any recommendations for keeping the tongue in the roof all night? - Sophie :)

It took a lot of will power for my to hold that posture. It's been 3 to four months and to my surprise my mouth isn't crooked anymore. I used to struggle holding my mouth properly. I was alway told I was attractive, but I was alway self conscious about holding my mouth a certain way and being seen from the side. I thought my mouth poked out to far and my mouth was noticeably not symmetrical. Luckily it wasn't enough to make me ugly. But since this my mouth sits perfectly. I'm no longer afraid to be seen from the side. I know it's not wishful thinking because I did this for weeks with seemingly no results. 3 to 4 months in and big difference. I'm in my late twenties and I think it's possible idk that because I've been doing things to increase my hgh that I'm seeing quick results. My bones a guess are still growing

you should place your entire tongue against the roof of your mouth not just the tip. start by touching the back of your two front teeth with your tongue, then pretend to swallow and close your mouth. you will know if you are doing this right if you feel tension around cheekbones and your chin shouldnt be hanging. you should feel just a little tension but not too much as then you wouldnt be able to hold you tounge there. To answer your question your tounge is supposed to be on the roof of your mouth unless you are talking, eating, drinking. just keep your tounge against the roof of your mouth, lips closed and breath through your nose. it will be hard first few weeks or even month so leave reminders for yourself and youll get used to it and get good results
      i hope this helps stacy
      Best of Luck

I'm looking at getting a top brace only to correct the crooked teeth, as a lot of work would be needed to correct the overbite. If I do myofunctional therapy instead, could this move the crooked teeth back into a straight position? Or will a brace be my only help now? thanks

Hi Sarah. I used to breathe mostly through the mouth (my adenoids where taken when I was 7 because I always had a blocked nose but I guess the habit persisted...) and I ended with a very long face (my parents have normal faces as well as my other family members). Now im going for surgery to correct it. Can I still benefit from correcting tongue position and breathe through the nose? Will it help my face to look shorter and with more forward growth? Thank you.

I’ve been doing this since I had bioblocs and invisalign.
Luckily I only started mouth breathing in my early teens (when I was 10 my teeth were perfectly straight, but by 13 were crooked) so it wasn’t so set.
I have a question though- I’m planning to get a nose job. My surgeon is an ENT so breathing issues are far less likely but they are still a concern, and nasal breathing has helped me considerably. Should I talk to my surgeon about this? And what can I do to prevent relapse during the healing process when the nose with inevitably be blocked with blood etc?

I am 21 and will do all my best to start breathing through nose. They said that if you are in your 20's or 30's, you can still make a big difference.
From my perspective, your facial bones won't change much, if at all.. But, their position and movement will surely improve greatly. Then, there are facial muscles, neck, and back posture.. All of this is interconnected. Patience may be needed, but I think that many benefits can be visible straight away, because people do not look attractive breathing through their mouths, plus their diction and posture is affected by it.. I might leave an update here, in a couple of days or weeks time, to share my experiences with switching from mouth-only to mouth-nose breathing style.
