My orthodontist said I have lip incompetence where I can't completely close my mouth because of my overbite teeth ~ which is also the main cause of my shortness of breath. So years have passed I just settled being a mouth breather... until i look at my old pictures and my face is not appealing for me. Practicing breathing through nose is a long way but maybe it will help with the face to change somehow. Idk

Don't try it, get your nose checked, if you have a deviated nasal septum, it's a structural issue, your nose isn't giving you enough air, so you must breathe with your mouth, no amount of mewing will help that, only getting surgery would, sometimes even chiropractic readjustment works.
Trying too hard to breathe through your nose despite feeling suffocated will affect your oxygen levels.

Oral thrush, candida albicans over grows and causes swelling of the nasal passage, usually it feeds off bad carbs and sugar, I had it caused by the mouth breathing as it is also physical muscle memory issue, you can unblock it by keeping breathing through it as it changes and the holes get bigger, no products needed really, practice breathing through it all day until you faces changes back to the human shape and holes get bigger. it is usually caused by always looking at screens and phones, especially in this day and age, shock horror lol thanks for the info.

I tried for a while to breathe only from the nose and I was focused a lot on closing the mouth ... but many times I feel uncomfortable and that the mouth needs to be opened to get more air ... Usually the mouth opens automatically when there is no air ... but I have to constantly open in a way Being independent of the mouth has always been automatic ... How do I change the habit of the brain stopping being aware of breathing and mouth for the restoration of the automaton?

There are some of us that have tried a plethora of allergy tests, neti pots, sinugators, medication and dietary changes all our lives and our sinuses are still completely swollen and blocked 90% of the time, tight as a drum. For some of us, nothing works and we just have to do the best we can.

Years ago I lost the ability to breath through my nose. I've just dealt with it by breathing through my mouth, catching my breath, and taking deep breaths. Yesterday, I was at the dentist with a mouth opener and other items, while she "did her work" for a crown placement. She only did half the work and I need to come back next week. It's terrifying to me because I can't breathe when all of this is happening. I'm scared I will die from not breathing at the dentist.

The major issue for all Mouth breathers is that their MINUTE VOLUME breathing has changed. Just like when people over eat they become over weight, When people OVER breathe - eg mouth at rest, chemical, physical or emotional stress or lack of awareness then gradually over breath more and more.
The community and Medical world does not really get this.
THIS is what causes asthma , THIS is what causes snoring and poor sleep, THIS is what causes blocked noses and increasing allergy reactions. THIS is what causes the "feeling of not getting enough air"
These techniques of Sarah's, though well meaning, will NOT convert people to Nasal Breathers.
The ONLY way to correct this is to reduce or reset the MINUTE VOLUME breathing.
If this is done correctly it matters not if you have deviated septum, reduce allergy reactions, eliminate asthma and sleep apnoea and correct the dental issues.
The Buteyko Method if taught correctly (not thru video or book or Dr Google) corrects breathing in 5 consec days and then with a period of consolidation.
All other treatments are symptomatic only.
I know this because I have taught over 6000 people full time for 10 yrs.

This sounds like bullshit. There’s plenty of people who’ve seen improvements without this and I imagine that once you’ve gradually increased the amount you breath through your nose you’ll have automatically reset how much air you’re used to.

If I just sit down I can do it, if I walk/run I need so much air I can't(I get dizzy if I try). I can't breathe through my right side at all, a little bit through left. I wonder if my voice is extremely nasal because of that. As a kid I'd keep my tongue in between my teeth, not anymore though but it was hard to get rid of that habit.

I am 27 ...I have been a mouth breather..all my life.... Now very much in control after knowing ..all the harm..that mouth breathing did to me..
First... clearing nose congestion always...( Doing neti most of the time.. sometimes steaming ..)
Starting putting tape on my mouth . Yeah i know it's funny but best decision of my life.. improved my sleep quality plus ...less dry mouth issue..
( Finally help of .. frequencies and subliminals)
    Improving lifestyle..
Like stopping habits which increase nasal congestion or swelling..like late night sleeping.. dairy product or cold stuff .
Soon i will do something for teeth alignment.. hopefully..it will help me more to control mouth breathing

To unblock my nose I gently squeeze the ends of my nostrils and it opens the airways. Stimulating the nerves seems to open the airway for some reason. I only need to do this occasionally. Sometimes it lasts for days or weeks. I had one nostril blocked and after doing this it is more open than the other. It works for me. It could work the same way as reflexology, I do not know.
