So it turns out any movies would have been as doomed as the show, but what do you think of his changes for Reva? Do you think they would have been an improvement, do you like his idea for season 2? Or is that doomed to the same fate as the first? Let me know your thoughts below, and as always, thanks for watching :)

It was a travesty from the start. Reva should never have been in the show. Leia should never have been in the show. The whole series should be canned and burned, along with 7, 8 and 9.

The original script sounds pretty bad too. It's hard to polish a turd.
To be honest, the only reason I know anything about this show is because I watch you, Critical Drinker and Nerdrotic. I don't watch it because I don't consider it cannon. The books, including the Han Solo trilogy were great and that is cannon to me.

The fact that he is content with how it came out hurts my writer's soul. Whatever happened to the stories that followed the human experience and struggle? That was the heart of Star Wars and everything we loved about it. At this point, this is like watching an elderly friend get abused, and no one will let you help them. They already cut out the characters that I loved most in the expanded universe. This is just heartbreaking for me.

The worst thing is that they didn't just cut them out... they cannibalised the EU concepts and gave us bad versions... like Jacen Solo swapped for Kylo Ren... throwaway-quality writing about a character who had a legitimate struggle and story in the EU.

I feel like the writers have 2 main problems. Problem one is that they’re extremely arrogant brats, however there’s not enough vertebrae between the lot of them to form a spine. They don’t critique each other at all and it shows, sometimes you can quite literally feel how they’re all just throwing more lines or more scenes in. “And then they did-“ or “And then they said-“ seems to make up the entirety of their talents. Problem 2 would be that they don’t have the right things in mind when trying to make a story, they aren’t thinking of making a great emotional experience that panders to the daily struggle of lots of people. War, famine, christ at least get something going other than “white man bad”. This gets especially prevalent when characters start being magically fine all the time. Why get invested when there’s no stakes? Reva was STABBED THRU THE CHEST TWICE WITH THE MOST DEADLY WEAPON IN THE GALAXY, and she’s still COMPLETELY FINE less than a few hours later. No stakes, no risk, no emotion. But here’s the thing… they know that. They know they don’t HAVE to actually think about anything like that, trying to make a show that will be remembered for its creativity and ability to convey emotion, because they’ve got something better. *NOSTALGIAAAA*! and boy howdy do they abuse the ever loving crap out of it. You want real emotion? Oh well uhh- remember when Obi Wan was Anakins master?! Let’s show them some flash back scenes that show how he’s angry! That way when we break the lore even harder, they won’t notice and will be too caught up watching Obi Wan do Elden Ring rolls all over the place. It did surprise me that they even had flashbacks, considering they’ve barely watched the movies themselves. Which is increasingly prevalent with every word that comes out of their mouths. And now they try to claim that “actchually uhhh it’s what happened and if you don’t think so too bad, oh and also the entire star wars fandom is a bunch of racists.” We seriously need some control on disney, they’ve become so big that they can insult their own fans and still get away with it. Is that not the literal definition of having a monopoly? They cannot screw up and be unable to fix it with money. Of course there’s not much the average joe can do about that though. This whole situation has got me reminiscent however, people being silenced for disagreeing with a massive corporation? Kinda sounds like the empire xD Anyways this is long enough, thanks for reading!

A possible story they could have told would have been a “temptation arc” for Kenobi. Something tempts him to leave Luke, an opportunity to fix the past, it backfires and he’s forced to move on and look to the future. For myself I'd have been much happier with a Reeva show - if by some miracle it turned out to be good Disney would have actually done something to expand rather than contract the Star Wars universe. If as one might expect it was bad then who would care?

      1) Characters that you cared about. Even the prequels, where you knew what the future held, you still wanted to see them somehow survive, and for things to somehow turn out right. Kenobi got this show because he was someone the audience of the prequels cared about
      2) Motivation. Instead of just moving from scene to scene dragged around by the plot, characters had personal desires that caused them to make every decision they did. It was always established why they did what they did, and the writing made sure you could understand it, even if you don't agree with their reasoning
      3) A coherent plot. Everything moved from point to point in a way where you could always figure out what was going on. My feeling was always that Obi Wan sacrificed himself so that he could guide Luke spiritually, like when he told luke to "let go," to blow up the Death Star. because obviously he was not gonna fit into the cockpit of Luke's X-wing. If they wanted to bridge the prequels with a new hope, they would show how Qui-gon did the same to help Ben.

Everyone complaining about the shitty writing while not acknowledging that the very concept of this entire series breaks the canon. Vader and Obi Wan didn't see each other after RotS until ANH. Period. There was absolutely NO STORY that COULD make sense.
This is why I refuse to recognize Disney Star Wars as anything more than horrible corporate fan fiction. I encourage everyone else to do the same. Disney may own the rights to Star Wars, but they DO NOT OWN Star Wars proper. Star Wars belongs to the fans. *WE* kept it alive throughout the decades. *WE* supported the various endeavors, and connected the dots in the Expanded Universe to create a more cohesive canon. *WE* made Star Wars what it was. If not for the fans, Star Wars would've never been anything more than some goofy clown's fantasy story. Even George Lucas recognized this, that He would not be who he is without the support of the fans.
Then Disney came along and the first thing they did was shit all over everything by removing the EU from canon. 30+ years of creativity lost in a single corporate temper tantrum. The writing was on the wall from the start... Disney *NEVER* gave a fuck about the property beyond its ability to print money. The fans have to stand up, break their addiction, and *STOP SUPPORTING DISNEY. WE OWE THEM NO LOYALTY, NOR DO WE NEED THEM.* Disney does not provide anything more than disposable entertainment. If Star Wars and Disney disappeared tomorrow, *YOU WOULD SIMPLY FIND SOMETHING NEW TO OCCUPY YOUR TIME.
Why wait? As the villians at Disney once said, "Let it die. Kill it if you must."
That wasn't meant for the franchise... It was meant for Disney.

Well by the time of a new hope, Obi Won had completed his Jedi training, knowing that at some point he will physically die, but due to his jedi training, he transpires death and achieves immortality through the force, aka, becomes a force ghost with his full conscience intact. Which is the only way immortality can be achieved in the star wars universe, Obi Won sacrifices himself physically because he realised in that moment he would be more helpful to Luke in the astral plain(the force), and allow the others to escape. Hope this helps in understanding what the jedi believe, and can achieve in the star wars universe.

because...the Empire have built the Death Star which is capable of destroying worlds like Alderaan, and will wipe out the Rebellion given the chance, so its critical that the plans in R2 that will allow the Rebellion to exploit a weakness and destroy it, that was the primary mission Obi Wan was tasked with by Leia to do. Obi Wan also knows Luke wont leave him if he is still alive, he is his only family now (so he thinks), , but also knows Vader must not capture Luke. So he sacrifices himself to buy enough time for Han & the gang a chance to escape, because theres no way they can beat Vader, and that forces Luke to leave him, and blindside Vader to what was really going on in the hangar bay, whilst also knowing he could become at one with the force as a force ghost.
or you could just go with Georges reasoning, which was he realised ObiWan had become superflous to the rest of the story at that point, as all he could do in the rest of the film would be stand around waiting for the Death Star attack, so he sacrificed him because it added to the drama of the story. and the rest of the stuff about "a certain pov" is because no one thought there'd be sequels or prequels at the time, and its very true of religious orders that they often hold very certain pov views of events which can be contradictory

Has a long time Star Wars fan I feel the originals were perfectly written. When something has been completed to a sufficient degree of satisfaction adding to it just dimish the quality of the work. That is why Otello doesnt need a sequel or Romeo and Juliet a precuel. The reason why Obi wan is not mentioned between the end of episode 3 and episode 4 is because he didnt do anything interesting in that time. He was already a wise Jedi Master so he didnt need more training and the whole point of him being there was to keep a low profile while the rebellion was formed. Disney had to artificially make Obi Wan incompetent in order to give him an arc and create fake crisis that honestly just diminish the story. Obi wan defeating Anakin and then later Vader " beating" him is poetic. It loses its appeal however f its revealed this characters fought each other every week.

As for the content for a budget stuff , its crazy that 100million dollars gets you less than 6hrs, I mean what do they spend it on ?
Because I rewatched Blakes 7 recently, a show that in a million years probably never cost more than 1% of that budget for 4 series worth, alot of the sets/effects were cheap and a bit rubbish even for the time, but they spent the money & time properly nailing the stories, the characters, and got people who could act it, and you didnt care that you werent seeing movie level effects, you got the idea from it, because of the compelling nature of the drama you were watching.

One of the biggest failed tropes of recent "quota based films" is that they have this idea that characters everyone loves and wants to see (Vader, obi wan, etc.) Can't be in a movie without new, diverse characters that no one ever wanted. Dr. Strange did this, making it a Wanda and Mexcico Chavez movie. The recent SW trilogy did this, throwing away Luke and Han, and pretending any of us gave a shit about their new, badly developed characters.

The problem with entertainment is most people can be "entertained" by a campfire. They can sit back relax watch the flames, listen to the crackles and pops, shut their brain off and be content. To be honest, I find campfires more entertaining than any mainstream content out there. The campfire will never try to judge me or indoctrinate me to the message, it will dance for me as long as it is provided with oxygen and fuel. For many people they can turn their brain off and be entertained by the movement and sounds on a screen, if they even have 2 braincells to rub together unlike the writers of these shows. The moment you try to think, it stops being entertaining and becomes frustrating.
Star Wars and Star Trek used to be shows that made you think and ignited your imagination, now they are just something to shut your brain up for a few moments while a little drool runs down your chin.

Ultimately there is still a massive risk for SW. For example, I love Jurassic park, but I completely despise Jurassic World, now they are saying that this last movie might not get a sequel, because of it's reception, (perfectly fine by me!) but how must all those bootlicker fanboys feel? they must be scratching their heads at how this could all go so wrong, well they ignored one vital aspect to a franchises continued success, *reputation* and the world movies have utterly obliterated what was left. Even though we won't be seeing anymore terrible movies, it's reputation is almost permanently damaged (something I hate to see.).
Now people don't give a shit about the completely farcical world they've,"built up". Now it's just disposable, brainless entertainment that isn't going to get a sequel, because no one cares, they failed to make people care!

I honestly think Obi-Wan having to come to terms with his death at the hands of Vader isn't a bad story idea...I just don't like the way this writer was going to implement.
Obi-Wan having to accept that it wasn't *his* responsibility to defeat Vader, that it was his destiny to protect Luke so Luke could solve that problem, is a much more compelling story.
I think the show was a fundamentally flawed premise, but had I been tapped to write it, I'd have had the "Rematch of the Century" be a Force vision, much like Luke's encounter with Vader in Episode V (before the duel on Cloud City). Let Obi-Wan and a Force projection of Anakin (or Anakin himself, whatever remains of him, trapped inside Vader) face off against Vader together at the Jedi Temple. Have Vader kill Anakin, and have Obi-Wan go all out in retaliation...only for Vader to keep getting back up no matter how much punishment Obi-Wan dishes out.
This also does address things people have complained about in the OT as well: Obi-Wan tells Luke Vader killed Anakin because Obi-Wan misinterpreted that part of the vision too literally (and thus, once he's become one withe Force himself he has a better understanding), and Obi-Wan's own fixation, which he passes on to Luke, that Vader must be *destroyed* and cannot be redeemed, because to Obi-Wan, Vader has killed all that was good in Anakin. Basically, Obi-Wan misunderstands what his role in this is, which is a theme George Lucas had himself used (the entire Prequel Trilogy is basically the Jedi putting too much faith in Anakin to destroy the Sith rather than using their own brains).
Obi-Wan surrendering to his fate and accepting that it isn't his task to kill Vader *could be* a compelling story; Obi-Wan whining about not wanting to die isn't, really.

See this just makes things even more dumb. If she didn't know that Vader was Anakin, that would have made sense both canonically, and also within the realm of the series. She could be fighting *FOR* Vader, thinking she's hunting down Anakin Skywalker, the person who murdered her friends. They could have told her a lie that Anakin was a Jedi who sought power, and the Empire stopped him and all of his evil murderous friends, the Jedi.
Then you could have Reva's murderous insanity mean something. Then you could have her find out somehow that Anakin is Vader. But have it be a slip-up by Kenobi where she overhears him, or he straight up tells her. Then the fight between good vs evil should have been her vs Kenobi, and then finally her vs Vader, where she buys time for Kenobi and Luke to get away unseen. Then Reva dies a more heroic death, at least partially redeeming herself, and Vader continues to search for Kenobi.
But they didn't do that. It's baffling because it's *RIGHT THERE.* It's money lying on the table, and they said "nah I'll just make my own out of human feces and cheap Chinese newspaper."

Agreed. They should not hire spineless soy based creatures to write hero characters. It's an interesting insight into the character of that author. I hope he never ends up in a position where someone else depends on him...

Thank you for you having the best take on this article. Some people are using this article to point out things they didn't like about the show, but you are the only one that is pointing out how much this article from author doesn't even make sense. In one paragraph he says, "They changed it all" and also says "I got a writing credit for 4 out 6 episodes because it was all from me." And the rest of the article is just as contradictory. They question is: why did this writer write this article? Why speak out about Reva and the budget and the CGI? Why talk about any of this? Beattie got the writers credit. He got the money. Why write this op-ed? Oh, because he feels guilty. He never says, "They ruined my writing". He has too much ego to say "my stuff was bad" and he is legally blocked from saying "what they wrote sucked" or "how they changed my work made it suck worse". But he needs to rationalize the guilt he feels so he writes this article. This article strikes me as the scenario when there has been a murder and there about 30 suspects in the room and the police says, "Well, I think we will rule this as an accident. Have a good night everyone," and then one person starts ranting for 20 minutes about how it wasn't them that murdered the person....even thought they don't have an alibi, their prints match the murder weapon and they have the best motive now that you think about it. We all know who the person was that murdered in this metaphor btw.

the thing is with writing credits, Im not sure how much of the original writing/idea has to be there to get a credit per the screenwriters guild. For instance Trevorrow gets a writing credit on the Rise of Palpatine, because they used just a few pieces of his original Eps IX script to seed the ideas for their version, but didnt copy/paste it in wholesale. But youd like to think this writer guy recognised when they were using his own work or not, but Im not entirely convinced based on his interview, he probably would.

    • @Stellarcrete
      @Stellarcrete 2 роки тому

@@awavey The credit isn't important. No one counted this guys credits. He told us in the article how many he got and why. Why would he do that? He isn't saying the show is great so I wrote it. He is saying the show is shit and they said I wrote it but I didn't but I did. That level of contradiction to a question no one asked can only come from guilt.

So his version makes it a bit better from the show that Reva didn't know Vader was Anakin. And he did at least have a reason for Reva to be in the story, so that Vader would stop looking for Obi Wan, even it seems like she would have been still overused. BUT surely Vader would have realized that she was lying about killing Kenobi? Re their "tiny" (lol) budget- the main reason it looked so cheap for me was the lack of aliens. I can't imagine that had to do with a lack of budget, because much cheaper shows like some of the Star Trek ones had lots of aliens on display.

We know how and why Obi Wan sacrificed himself. He had learned to become a force ghost, enabling him to show Luke, someone younger and in a better position to eventually take down the Empire, the power of the force and help guide him at pivotal moments. And he actually believed in something.
We don't need a below average Saturday morning cartoon in live action form to inform us of this.

It's clear that if they give Kenobi series where the original cast is back a tighter budget, it's that they don't have beleave in it, or they are just so shrew that they think they can pay Ewan McGregor's bigger cut and take it away from the production budget and everything will be fine. Both possibilities say they are incompetent (might be both suggestion at the same time). You don't waste an opportunity like this but make sure the series outline will be a bomb and designed for a series.... you don't stretch some random movie idea into a series, it won't work (especially if you don't add new side-plots but literally just stretch it with creating air).
You would think that such a huge company would make sure that this kinda production would have a solid budget and some certified writers to do the outline of the story and then when in production write the episodes rather than take some random guys bad script and be like: "Go and make a series out of this, we won't be paying you to write a solid story when we already bought this crap with pennies".

The writing at Disney feels not only like disempowerment - and emasculation - of legacy characters, but also the transfer of their valor (initiative, action and responsibility) to other characters that don't own it. Stolen valor. They are completely smashing the hero's journey's narrative, almost as if they wanted to create a collectivist narrative of deconstructed , mediocre and pathetic heroes who have almost no volition and whose good decisions can't be their own.

There is very little that you can do between the sequels and the OT that won't spoil Lucas's story. Rebel's managed it, but only by keeping it to a very small addition. One that respected what came before and after it in the story.
It was a significant moment for Kenobi, and probably my favourite moment outside of the OT, one that added to the character, rather than rewrote him as someone completely different, like KK's awful series .
It might be twenty years, but Kenobi's story is done, there is no room to mess around. Any sort of series would probably be damaging, even if it had been handled by writers and producers with talent. KK and her omni-shambles were doomed to fail, given that they couldn't create a decent sequel trilogy in the infinite amount of time after the OT.

Hit the nail on the head with that last point mainly Disney since they got their own platform as churning out content for contents sake sake and relying on big name actors or characters to bring people in to setup the next show at the expense of quality. I've tried watching the films and tv shows particularly post End Game and I give up after one or two episodes and don't go cinema anymore as I'm just sitting there thinking this makes no sense logically and that I really don't care

Just what was Obi-Wan protecting LUKE from? Boredom? And how (aside from that trip to Alderaan on the Falcon ten old years later) was he "training" Luke? Hey, in episode 6 at least Obi-Wan gives Luke that spaceship model we see Luke playing with in ANH, because (somehow) that closes a loop.

well if they do have a season 2 with obi wan going thru some kind of an issue to get him to the point where he wants to sacrifice himself for luke, it will be reva at his side kicking his butt to do it. Obi wan didn't need a reason to sacrifice himself, he already had one. when the children were born both he and yoda knew that anikin's offspring would be a threat to him ( the main reason they went to the trouble to splitting up the twins and putting them where the empire couldn't sense them). Obi wan watched over Luke all his life since birth and knew the important part he would play in the story. Even though Obi wan may of wanted to stay at Lukes side and train him more, he know that the sacrifice was needed and that being one with the force ( force ghost ) would make him stronger thus being able to help Luke to become the jedi he was destined to be in more ways than had he lived.

A kenobi movie or series that shows some of his darker side could have been good.
In the old movies he used his famous mind trick on the stormtroopers and he was quite deceptive in what he told luke.
He was more idealistic in the prequels and clone wars.
A story about a kenobi developing this manipulative side to protect the secret of luke skywalker could work. Might even involve some inquisitors and some vader cameos (but no rematch of kenobi and vader - thats just stupid)

  • @neocomp92

Well, that explains the ending. If the writer only cares about instant emotional payoffs, that would explain the weird reversal of moral values of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Instead of switching from deontology to consequentialism or utilitarianism values, he just replaces "the greater good" with "my own emotions and values".
Why does he insist on starting the story in a position where most of its aspects were resolved in the movies? Obi-Wan was raised to be courageous, self-sacrificing and strong faith in the Force, and he has shown these values throughout the movies and animated series. He came to Tatooine with nothing but absurd faith that somehow Luke is the key to defeating thd Sith. His angst on the decision to kill Anakin was mostly resolved when blades crossed and he left him to burn on Mustafar. I am still waiting for the extraordinary evidence that, in the face of such qualities, Obi-Wan reneged his duties and abandoned the Force is a sensible thing.
Also, if Reva believed that Order 66 was an act of the good guys, then logically she supports collective punishment. She didn't consider how odd that younglings like her with no knowledge of the plot to overthrow the government should also be killed purely by their association with the Jedi? Well, that explains her going Sharia law on that woman in Episode 1.

We didn't need all that spelled out so that there is no ambiguity or room for thought about what if, much less do we need Kenobi not be what we all know him as, since his early days, up until the end, he was already flawed enough ,but was able to always keep his stoicism, we don't need a little detour in his life where all his character gets cheapened for a quick buck
