Personally, I love that they left Anakin with his blue saber. To me, it always added a much more devastating, gut-wrenching feeling seeing two blue sabers going against each other with the perfect red fiery background as it captivated that feeling of betrayal and loss as two people, who were once brothers now turned enemies, have to fight to the death. Not to mention that those two blue sabers weren’t just any sabers, as they were Anakin’s and Obi Wan’s. Seeing the two blue sabers swinging at each other really made me think to myself “how did it come to this?” Adding so much more emotion to the scene for me.
Totally agree. Before that fight a blue saber was only in the hands of those who stood for goodness. Seeing it turned on another saber in malice felt like a perversion.
Also, it teases you with a *teeny* glimmer of hope, kinda like “Oh, they’re not really trying to kill each other.. This is just a sparring match.. Any minute they’re gonna stop, shake hands, and be brothers again.. Any minute now.”
@@wolftone69 he’s a fine actor. But if an actor doesn’t have strong, well-written dialogue, the actor can only do so much with it, you know. The scene about the sand with Padme comes to mind. That and many others.
Hayden is so fucking talented with the lightsaber, he could have actually been a real jedi... even Ewan admitted there were things Hayden could do that he could not replicate. I'm so angry at the people that gave Hayden shit back in the days, he was incredibly dedicated to the role and gave an amazing performance.
I mean he basically invented cringe, we just forgot he was supposed to. Personally, I got over it early when seeing the bonus features of him behind the scenes for the video game. The genuine love he had for Star Wars and the skill he had with the saber moves, unimpeachable and exemplary.
@@KalonOrdona2George Lucas said it best people thought they didn’t like Hayden but they really just didn’t like Anakin because Hayden played Anakin perfectly.
Honestly I REALLY like Hayden's stance/attitude here. He's completely relaxed, with a pure hateful facial expression, and unleashes furious strikes when he has to. Really shows Vader's dark side. He's incredibly strong, but also arrogant, drunk with power, which explains his eventual loss.
even his attitude throughout ROTS, he was cocky and confident, which I think Hayden did an excellent job representing throughout the fight. Anakin wasn't panicky or racing, he was well timed with powerful strides, which I only really appreciated after re-watching the film.
Sorry but in my opinion everything about Anakin/Vader in the end makes little sense. Right before he cut off Mace's hand he was crying out about what the "jedi way" is and that they shouldnt kill Palpatine. But immediatly after cutting his hand off Anakin is heading off to go slaughter children and kill his best friend.Hayden turning soooooo evil in literally less than 24 hours and all because he cut off a hand was a pretty weak sell. I get that there were many events leading building up to it. But this moment shouldnt have been the climax of it all.
@North Bridge I hear you. That is an astute obversation. That being said, there is a bold and broad line from "Sith and Jedi use same logic" to, let me go MURDER CHILDREN! Ya know. I've watched all the Clones Wars animated series multiple times and I get that there were many events leading up to Anakin's betrayal - but Anakin went full on evil video game boss....even when he said "from my perspective the Jedi are evil"....well that means that he believed the Sith are good and in the name of this new found good side, he, and I say again....MURDERED DOZENS (or Hundreds) of CHILDREN🤣
@North Bridge Oh for sure! I agree. Terrible writing. Most of that trilogy was terrible writing. From Anakin saying "I wish I could wish away my feelings" to Anakin saying "I hate sand."...just absolute terrible writing....same with Padme's character. In episode 1 she serves as a mother figure to Anakin, which makes sense since she is so much older. In the begining of Attack of the clones Anakin creeps her out but then they have a talk about sand and she falls in love with him. Then Anakin murders tuskin raiders, women/children and Padme is all "Oh Annie! Its ok" I still love you even though everything you did is against the Jedi code/absolutely horrific. But her death was the most hilarious. How did she die "from a broken heart"....as poor as the new trilogy was, episodes 1-3 easily have the worst writing.
Crazy that it took society a whole generation to realize that Hayden played his part very well. Everything from the action sequences, to his acting and portraying the "angry young adult".
I feel like the further away from their release...the more people get nostalgic about them. Personally...i still think the first two were pretty bad and I'll only watch them for nostalgia.
Not to be "that guy" lol, but I always saw Hayden as the perfect Anakin; maybe I feel that way due to the nostalgia as another person stated, but I genuinely always loved his portrayal of the young pre-Vader. He played the angsty rebellious young adult so accurately, so much so that every action, down to the most miniscule facial expression, flawlessly depicted just how Anakin would've reacted in each given situation were this real life.
It’s because people had a different idea of how Vader would’ve been as a young man. When you take like 20-30 years to make the next trilogy, people will already have a set mind on what they want and anything else will pretty much disappoint them
I love how he just absolutely walks down Obi-Wan, barely moving his head to avoid attacks and putting so much power with minimal effort. Man makes it look easy af.
Except Obi-Wan beat Anakin in every encounter (even the last if you think about it). Obi-Wan was the greatest Jedi by far as shown by all the powerful Sith he defeated (Anakin/Vader, Grievous, Darth Maul) and by remaining true to the Jedi ideals.
I really wish they'd kept more shots like the one here where Anakin just leans back away from a strike and casually blocks behind him while walking in the final cut. It's not just a cool action, but it shows Anakin beginning to fight the way Vader does in the Original Trilogy - not the wild aggression of Prequel Anakin, but steady, planted, and impenetrable.
“Came out of theaters disappointed”?! I’ll never forget seeing this scene in theater during the midnight premiere. Then skipping school later that day. I absolutely love this duel. It outclasses everything that Disney has come out with BY FAR
One thing that I never fully realized how much I appreciated is Hayden’s stride during the fight. Head unfaltering, unflinching as he walks towards Obi-Wan near completely consumed by his anger (seen around 2:48)
@@StarWarsAnalyst yes hayden really captured vader's fighting prowless, even what i call "vader slashes" when hes killing the seperatists, and good look on how vader would use the things around him to throw at his opponents even anakin does this against ventress and a few bounty hunters in the clone wars cartoon
I loved this when I saw it in the theater. I think it's good but an extended scene would have been great, especially the light saber exchange. Imagine Anakin being sliced up by his own (blue) light saber. Something else that was left I saw somewhere else was Anakin asking for help. Obi says "I loved you...but I can't help you". That's when Anakin responds with I hate you and his eyes go yellow. That would have been awesome to see as well.
Anakin asking for help would not have been a good idea, it was fortunately cut off. It would have made Obi-Wan being the bad guy here, with him refusing to help someone begging for it.
@@headgehogmusic but it would still be within his character. Bro literally told Anakin's kid to murder him, because he did not believe there was an ounce of good left in him. This is the reason he would not save him. Obi-Wan always had a very black/white view of the galaxy and rarely, if ever, saw things as morally grey. It's only after witnessing Vader's death (through the Force) that he came to believe he was wrong about Anakin, as he would have never believed it unless he saw it.
2:56 Would have been such a FLEX from Anakin. The nonchalant lean to dodge the overhead swipe, into a series of one handed parries ALL while still advancing, just shows how confident he is in his newfound power.
You're absolutely right! I remember back in 2005 when almost everyone is saying that Hayden Christensen is the wrong guy to play the role of Anakin Skywalker. I was flashed by his performance and a fan since the first time he appeared on screen. From our point of view now the prequels made a lot of right choices. Thanks for your explanation.
And it was great Hayden got the last laugh in Kenobi. That final scene with the voices overlapping drove home his acting style as Anakin like nothing else
@@StarWarsAnalyst I agree, but I must admit I feel his line delivery could have definitely been better. Yes, a good chunk of it could be blamed on the (ma)clunky dialogue throughout, but still. I also wish he was a little less "deliberate" in Episode II, but that is absolutely the writing's fault and not his.
The people how say that about Hayden. What mental problem they had? I was a kid back then but suficient mature to realized that Hayden was PERFECT as Anakin. The problem was the script for many.. What the heck?
"Anakin VS: Obi-wan (Saber Edit)" It is a youtube video, Check it out... it eliminates alot of the clunky stuff hand to hand stuff and dramatic pauses, makes it a solid fight rather than cutting back and forth with yoda emperor fight, and edits Anakin to using Palpatines spare saber as was originally intended as Obi-Wan was originally supposed to find Anakin's Saber at the temple massacre... definitely worth a watch
Yes, for swinging his sword behind his back to parry a blow that Obi-Wan hadn't even started on yet. Yeehaw. Anybody can learn pre-defined moves, but a good actor or stunt double can make it look real. That entire fight is a catastrophe, and the worst is the "high ground ending". Just get real!
@@henrikg1388 Well, maybe many people can learn moves but not everyone can execute them while acting. Hayden DID make it look real both through his stunts/moves and his acting. High ground phrase is clunky and cringe sure, but the duel itself? No. But go ahead, be a contrarian edgelord... Also, you missed the point with the ending.
Cause it was trash...decades of hype wanting to see a young anakin at full power and he barely used the force. He took out dooku with ease yet obi wan who got yeeted by dooku somehow held him off. Same shit happened in the new series. And with darth maul. Obi wan has more plot armour than a dark trooper
@@garysanders8350 I agree they barly used the force like in star wars the force unleashed game did and it was good but it was not bad either the sword fight was good need a 2 or more flourishs and variety of powers
Hayden just casually walking while performing crazy lightsaber attacks/blocks/and parries makes him look like such a badass. Truly conveys his confidence and power as he transforms into Vader
I feel like people really need to appreciate Hayden as Anakin more. The script had it's flaws, but he brought so much to the role, especially his dedication to the physicality that was needed
In the prequels he was saddled with some of the shittiest dialogue ever, plus he had to play the role of the angst ridden conflicted teen in love, which basically means he's a whiny little bitch, and we don't like seeing our Vader as a whiny little bitch. But that wasn't the actor's fault.
@@22steve5150 That was the thing, for most fans, Vader was primarily an icon, a simple, an inexorable force. Hayden had to be the human that became that, and naturally there would be fans who would disconnect from it because it isn't the Vader we know, but it never could be until the end of RotS. We could see flashes of who he would be, but he had to grow into those cybernetic legs
I love how Hayden & Ewin became friends after all of this. It made it much more compelling when they fought during the Obi Wan series! When actors have good chemistry...it makes a great story!
5:56 EXACTLY. That was the whole point of the scene, it mirrored what Obi Wan did to Darth Maul. And this showed the growth of Obi Wan as a patient fighter and it showed the arrogance and anger from Anakin. All in one simple move.
It was a lazy way to end a fight that they did not know how to end. Anakin has been sold as intelligent, prudent, the less reckless of the two and has precognition so he would know the jump would fail and would never have attempted it. Obiwan throughout the series wins purely due to plot armor, they do not even try to explain how he wins against Maul nor Grievous. What they should have used was that Obiwan is better trained in the force and simply uses something that Anakin was never taught to defeat him.
@@gideonlovecraft3134 This. The way Obiwan "defeated" Darth Maul was ludicrous and came from a vastly more compromised position than just not having "the high ground(tm)". If Lucas really did try drawing some sort of parallel between that silliness and the bitter, poignant, devastating clash between these two brothers is not just lazy and stupid, it's downright insulting. And all of this ignores the fact that in several movies, Jedi have force-jumped VASTLY higher than anything in this fight -- so why jump right into melee range? Why not leap 30' in the air and come down like a vengeful Sith Lord? Cuz they had no idea how to force the loss that everything else in their plot depended on. Classic blunder: write something that must happen and then develop characters that cannot fit into that event. Hayden was perfect in this sequence and portrayed someone that never would have lost in such a pathetic manner. Blah.
@@SpanishAvenger Same. I also never really liked the "Legends" idea of Sith blades being red because they used synthetic crystals. Taking the same crystal that a Jedi would use and then forcing it to turn red by making it *bleed* is definitely one of the better ideas to come out of Disney canon.
While I still love the way it has played out, a neat alternative concept could have been Anakin's lightsaber gradually turning red during the duel as if he were unintentionally bleeding it through his sheer hatred for Obi-Wan, but I feel like that could have broken the future concept of bleeding in some way.
Just No🤦♀️... the whole finding a jedi's crystal and "bleeding" it is to try hard and edgy for edgy sake imo. Made much more sense for sith to grow synthetic perfect crystals like was in legends already. A sith would not waste time seeking an imperfect crystal and would instead manufacture a perfect one like fake diamonds and instead spend the time training and increasing their power and knowledge. The old synthetic sith crystals Played well into the duality of jedi and sith too as jedi seek out natural crystals thru the force and sith create them and take the shortcuts to perfection. Natural vs. Synthetic was a much cooler idea in my opinion than a bloody crystal and played into the duality that permeates star wars. Sith are very utilitarian and don't care about their weapons color enough to waste time changing it... actually the opposite was the case and they cared so little about the color that they used synthetic crystals as they were perfect and always stable, not to mention much easier to get ahold of.(Just happened to be red because synthetic crystals are red) ... to me seems like they are trying to retroactively change lightsabers to be more "alive" and loyal like wands from Harry Potter when they were originally just a weapon. Breaking the will of a crystal is plain stupid if you ask me but to each their own, in my headcannon sith still use synthetic sabers.
Hayden gave it his all with this performance. His dedication can't be denied. So many lightsaber duelists model themselves after his fighting style alone. That should tell you something.
@@masterwhopper414 makes sense it look choreographed because obi wan and anakin pretty much trained with each other constantly so knew each other's moves like it was second nature

Hayden gave it Keanu level of dedication, he deserved way more credit. I loved the prequels it gave us the best lightsaber duels of all the movies, it is also insane how much better they could have also been.
Start giving him this credit by not comparing him to Keanu or anyone else. He gave this Hayden level of dedication which (the phrase) should be an indication of the great level of commitment.
When I first saw the film, I thought that final jump from Anakin where he gets sliced up was so stupid and out of character considering the rest of the fight. But only recently, after watching lots of UA-cam videos about it, I now see how well it ties in with the prequel trilogy as a whole, and how it's a parallel of Kenobi's fight with Maul and it REALLY IS just like poetry lol
Also it only worked on Maul because he himself was arrogant (Best explanation we're gonna get for such a lapse in judgement.) Maul is much like Anakin in his craving for a false sense of security that ultimately killed him to Old Ben. Obi-Wan is an expert on capitalizing on arrogant opponents.
Easy fix would have been if Obi Wan jumped onto a pipe or something on the lava beach where he would still have high ground and advantage for attacks if anakin jumped to the lava beach. If he were on a pipe or something narrow where anakin had to land directly in front or behind him to continue the fight the flip directly over him would make much more sense
Seemed that they had better ideas that what they chose to actually film. I could have done without the lava surfing to be honest, and the end to the fight was just like they had no idea how to end it so they just had Anakin do something stupid.
I loved the part in the obi wan series where obi wans lightsaber slashes Vader's mask and he gets a look at what Anakin has become and Anakin's voice is mixed with the deep Vader voice.
@Spiralredd Nah, they just stole that exact scene from Rebels where it was Ahsoka fighting Vader. The scene in Rebels was EPIC. This scene only was enough as a reason to watch Rebels. But you have to watch the Clone Wars first of course, if you didn't. In my opinion the Clone Wars are better than the prequels and go second in my personal SW rating after the original trilogy.
@@galaxyrider9599 it doesn't matter because it's a lot more impactful for obi wan to experience it than Ashoka because obi wan is responsible for him being in the suit. Ashoka isn't
@@Spiralreddalso his connection to Obi Wan far outweighs Ahsoka. Don’t get me wrong I loved the scene in Rebels just because broken mask Vader is always cool and well Vader in general. I just don’t care for Ahsoka these days.
Their swordsmanship is one of the greatest things I've ever seen in film. We all hoped to see it brought back for the Kenobi series, unfortunately it never reached anywhere near that level
People always complain about the dialogue of Anakin in the Prequels, and often forget he is a teenager who literally marries a princess and becomes a knight. He's living a fairytale, and when everything starts to fall apart, that is when Anakin begins to turn to the darkside. Another thing to note is that Obi-wan trained Anakin. People complain that Anakin and Obi-wan's fight looks a bit too much like they are widely flailing and doing unnecessary moves, but they aren't. They are essentially fighting a mirror, with Obi-wan prioritizing defense and Anakin being hyper-aggressive, despite being trained in a heavily defensive style. The moment that is most telling is when they do the twirl and for several seconds, nothing happens - they're doing the same defensive move to stave off attacks. Anakin's fighting style only really changes when he becomes Vader and is unable to move as nimbly, and specifically develops a style meant to combat lightsabers.
This version of the duel would have made so much more sense. I wish they had kept all or most of that. Especially considering the amount of work Hayden put in, and how gorgeous and intricate the choreography is in this. Also the dodges and Anakin bobbing and weaving, help make his poor decision at the end make more sense. When I first saw it, and even until now, that jump feels out of place. It makes a lot more sense when we see him evading every thrust and becoming increasingly arrogant throughout. Instead it looks like he just flipped out and lost composure at the end, and tried an ill-advised move. Just imo tho. And seeing them use the force a lot more and trying to use objects, makes the fight feel more believable and appropriate in world. And adds a lot I feel. Great vid! I'm glad I got to see what was originally intended. It makes a lot more sense imo.
I’m not late coming to Hayden’s defense. I’ve always thought that he was great and some of the fans just hated him or were jealous. I’m glad to see Hayden FINALLY getting the praise that he’s deserved for over 20 years. The man is amazing and it’s nice to see how humble and thankful he is for the fans coming to him now. ❤
Yeah they ruined all the yeara we could’ve had Hayden as part of Star Wars. Now he’s in his 40s and Disney continues to run the series into the ground.
Love Hayden's body language in this. I'd always assumed his movement as vader was him being constrained by his suit (which is probably still true) but here, it comes off more as being fully in control. His powers heightened by the dark side, the methodical, purposeful attacks and movement speaks to him almost playing with Obi Wan. Very great physica acting.
I'm not a star wars fan but this 2:25 This bit where kenobi throws a object and anakin effortlesss deflects it and, just, starts walking SLOWLY is absolute gold. If that was kept in the movie it would be talked about to this day.
Anakin vs Obi-Wan was and still is epic, enhanced by Hayden Christiansen's incredible physical prowess. My favorite lightsaber duel between two characters at the peak of their abilities, matched only by the amazing animation and motion capture of Ray Park for Darth Maul vs Ashoka during the final season 7 episodes of SW The Clone Wars.
Didn't help him against Dooku, who utterly humiliated Obi-Wan --- twice. In retrospect, I find Dooku's victories over Obi-Wan very satisfying, since Disney seems to have overpowered him to make him some sort of Jedi-God.
@@jetuber Obi-Wans best attribute was that he was the pinnacle of a hard hat blue collar Jedi whose greatest attribute was his wit. Disney destroyed that by somehow overpowering him to... Disney main character levels. If he were to win such a mismatch, Obi-Wan would do so through awareness and perfect timing not emotional power ups.
@@7632ios And that first battle will never make sense. Dooku can definitively beat Kenobi (he did it twice). And if pre- Mustafar Anakin can defeat Dooku, who is better than Kenobi, then he surely should have handily defeated Kenobi. I know that Kenobi tricked Anakin into trying a foolish stunt at the end, but it shouldn't have even gotten that far -- Anakin should have beaten him quite quickly right when they started dueling, since pre-M Anakin could defeat even Dooku, who was far better than Kenobi.
@@7632ios LOL. The novelizations. The movies are the movies, and it's what they show that counts, not whatever some novelization writer wants to make up. In fact, that's one of the few good things about the prequels -- they show that Sith CAN beat Jedi.
2:47 I like the little bit of character in Anakin's movement here. You can just tell that this little kick PISSED him off. The way he turns back to fight he's just like "are you serious"
Thank you for explaining why anikan jumped over like that. I always thought originally that was a terrible way for him to attack. Now I understand more of his motivations.
Your research efforts are amazing, I thought I might be one of the most obsessed fans until I've found your channel, you're just a whole different level :D keep up the good work
A longer duel would have been nice (especially one that shows "his new power")... what I personally feel is needed was a longer dark side turn for Anakin. He went from "save the bad guy so I can save my wife" to "guess I have to kill everyone including kids and oh yeah my wife" with very little in the middle.
It would have helped if some of the additional deleted scenes of Palpatine sowing Anakins distrust in the Jedi and even his wife were left in. Those scenes help paint a confusion situation where it could be plausible that the Jedi and rogue senators were plotting a coup. Then his decision to lead the Jedi Massacre would make more sense.
@@johnepants yeah I don't entirely understand why they cut some of the Anakin character building scenes out... They cut out some extremely good material that turned him from a creepy teenager with anger issues into a complex human being that you could clearly see was being manipulated and there were reasons why he was feeling the way he was and doing what he was...and that Padme was reciprocating the weird stuff so it wasn't actually as weird as it looked on screen
Killing the Jedi was part of "saving the bad guy" - as Palpatine says, "the Jedi are relentless. If they are not all destroyed, it will be civil war without end." (Not that you can blame them.) And it's not like Anakin/Vader ever consciously decides that killing his wife is part of his goals now, he just lashes out in anger after hearing her reject everything he did for her and (supposedly) betraying him to Obi-Wan. Hence him worrying about her safety when he wakes up in the suit. And, of course, the Dark Side takes every bit of anger he has and increases it tenfold.
I think what was needed was maybe a little hesitation as he was in the temple before the youngling slaughters, before ultimately doing it cos he has thrown his lot this way to save his wife and child. As it was, most of his hesitation (and temporary regret) was during the Mace fight. The general quick direction of the fall made sense to me given he had no way back after choosing Palps over the Jedi (one having the power he needed), but I wished to see his light side flicker briefly again before he comitted the ultimate sin to prove his new loyalty to Palpatine.
I think that when watcher watches a duel between Obi Wan and Anakin with blue lightsabers he/she maybe could understand that with blue lightsaber in this duel Anakin looks like a Fallen Jedi. If Anakin had red lightsaber in the duel well that means he fully imbracing the Dark Side of the Force.
@@spider-boy5498 right. Imagine the look on Kenobis face when Anakin lit the saber hilt and it glowed a bright red. I can imagine a slump in his body and maybe uttering “oh Anakin, what did you do?”
I always loved Hayden's portrayal of Anakin. "Revenge of the Sith" is my personal favorite film in the Star Wars Universe. I named my son Anakin because of Hayden's performances. Almost everyone I knew gave me crap over it at the time and nobody had anything good to say about Hayden at the time. My son was born in August of 2007 (only 2 years after the release of Episode 3)❤And now, 16 years later, I don't feel alone with that sense of admiration. Its wonderful to see Hayden playing this amazing role again. Its also heartwarming to see that he's getting positive attention for his work. Very well deserved, indeed.
It was a good fight but it was difficult at times to track 2 blue light sabers smashing against each other. I think Palpatine should have given Anakin/Vader one of his red lightsabers and been like “Strike Down the Jedi and Separatists with this weapon, after this is complete you’ll have proven yourself to the Sith” in my best Palpatine voice. Or Kenobi being the negotiator should have had a Green Lightsaber and been a Jedi Consulor like Qui Gon. The color contrast would have made the fight way better.
I think the whole point was they were brothers, the same, a mirror image of each other, evenly matched in power. That's why they had the same lightsaber.
I always wondered if Anakin actually still stand a chance after losing the high ground to Obi-Wan assuming that his mind was calmer. If Anakin tried to jump side ways, Obi-Wan can possibly follow him and then slash him. If Anakin throws lava at him, Obi-Wan can push it back and Anakin would have very little room to dodge it (he can push it back again but we all know from an earlier scene that force attacks from both sides are actually even matched so what that might lead to is lava ends up spilling everywhere but Obi-Wan would have plenty of room to dodge it while Anakin has practically none). There seems to be a lot of choice for outplay but in fact Anakin's options were quite limited.
All he had to do is hop off the stand he was on and walk up to Obi Wan and continue fighting a fight that Anakin would probably win being the much stronger fighter
Nah he could have just stayed on that platform, wait a little and jump to the ground, he wasn't in the rush since Obi was no way of going back to the platform , he clearly would not have pushed Anakin in the lava either , Anakin was just too cocky to wait and he wasn't sane either
I always felt like once their duel reaches the scene where Obi-Wan is higher on the ledge and Anakin is below on the little floating robot, he should have just left it at that. He didn't even need to accept defeat, just pretend like he did, then later try to ambush Kenobi again before he gets back on the ship he arrived in. But in his arrogance, he felt like he had to take out Obi-Wan right at that very moment and tries to attack when he is majorly disadvantaged.

I would've loved to watch an extra 20minutes of Obiwan and Anakin just dueling it out on Mustafar. That sequence was possibly the most hype duel of the time and even now. I love how a lot of it was synchronized, Anakin using the moves that Obi Wan taught him. It really was an even contest without Anakin’s arrogance and anger.
Let them do it in a Clone Wars special, focusing on this duel. It can still be done and explained as what happened when it cut away to the Sidious/Yoda duel.

It has to be really dark and maybe use flashbacks to show that particular Jedi of the episode's relationship with the clones and even family backgrounds and past. But no room for humour whatsoever. I'd also like to see normal civilians seeing order 66 on the news too. It can be treated like the 9/11 of the whole galaxy.
Anakin having a red lightsaber would have been great especially if it had been combined with the lightsaber swap and those colors getting reversed for a bit. It would have also been a great way of showing that this wasn't simply a battle of ultimate good versus ultimate evil, and a subtle reminder that the Jedi had become corrupted by the dark side and were doing some pretty screwed up things themselves that were no small part if Anakin's fall to the dark side.
Thanks for making this video. Watching Hayden work his moves in behind-the-scenes 'practice' is just incredible, especially the way he twirls his lightsaber around and blocks attacks even coming from behind him... This content just adds even more awesomeness to watching the finished film _SW III_
I wish this was shown more in the fight, Anakin looks as though he's fighting effortlessly. Just moving his head to the side and walking menacingly as he engages obiwan.
Forreal, even with just the smattering of grainy, fast-cut sequences shown I still thought they had a more "satisfying" feel to them compared to the impression the finished scene left. Imo that's also a proper mini-rebuttal tothe assertion of the "genius of the prequels" made here too... K. I mean I won't thrash the host's opinion here bc I get it: The prequels are retro af by now & therefore fascinating to a wide swath of younger folks & so I hope they get waaay more mileage out of them than the rest of us did back then, I know I wish I did!
I agree with my man speaking here first time i saw this fight i got goose bumps it doesnt get boring to watch that one part where they are just spinning the light sabers infront of them without even hitting each other was just beatifully done
How smooth was Hayden with that matrix dodge! And at that speed, it would have beheaded almost anyone else. The moment where he flicks off the incoming block from obi was pretty sick too.
The only issue with Hayden's choreography is that he was too fast and had to wait on his opponent, blocking before his opponent event started the strike more than once.
Force powers allow the predict the future in combat, it's in the books and lore. Also note, some silly looking moves are designed to throw these predictions off.
@@RicoZaid_I think he meant actual Hayden was too fast so other actors had to slow down, he was just too good at the fighting choreography. Unless you are making a joke because Hayden portrays Anakin who is a very strong Jedi.
This is why I like the new Star Wars content that we've been getting lately. They are pulling from so much content that we never originally got. Books, deleted scenes, games and more. I would love to see some of the older stuff again with the deleted content added. The Vader VS. Obi Wan fight in Kenobi is probably my second fav light saber duel. Good stuff.
I just realized something... wouldn't Anakin ACTUALLY be the first Jedi to kill a Sith (Dooku) in a millennium? Maul wasn't actually killed by Obi-Wan, not until much later.
@@masterexploder9668 lol right? While saving obiwan and the chancellor of the republic at the same time. I understand anakins feelings of being offended there
As a self proclaimed doe hard - i must say your vids and analysis make me appreciate even more. Mad respect to hayden. I wish we had extended versions with all this stuff
Honestly hayden and anakin are the same people this man’s choreograph is insane the way he was able to do those lightsaber fight at the speed they do them at are insane
It makes sense Anakin having his blue saber in the fight seeing that Obi Wan can pick it up after the fight. But I still wish he had red saber. Would have gone well with Anakin's aggressive style.
The Sith's red sabers came from a ritual where they they killed a Jedi in battle and took the cyber crystal from their lightsabers, poured their hatred until the crystal turned red. There's the comic story of how Vader created his lightsaber and the process took some time. There would have maybe been enough time for Vader to take one of the cyber crystals from the attack on the temple and perform the ritual, but then it would have been from a random Jedi. Makes me wonder how the other Sith (Maul, Dooku, Ventress, etc.) got theirs while still in hiding, but it does explain how Grevious doesn't have even one red lightsaber since he was not a forcewielder. They probably also went with the blue saber for the duel because it was the first duel with both Jedi sabers and they wanted to prioritize how Kenobi was fighting a friend and Jedi, not just another Sith.
@@stephenoffer609 Yep. I wonder why they retconed the sith crystals from synthetic to "bleed the crystal"? Like you said where did Maul and Dooku get theirs? Didin't Ventress get her's from Dooku or do I remember it wrong?
Aside from storytelling reasons (battle of the brothers etc.) I think blue lightsaber is better visible on that whole lava background. This could factor in too. Color of the crystal shouldn't matter as Obi-Wan could replace (old canon) or purify it (new canon).
Another idea they had during their duel which was cut, they were confronted by a giant monster forced to team up and form an alliance to defeat the monster, working together side by side for one last time.
00:05 Seeing "the duel", the GOAT lightsaber fight being shot by a cam op sitting in a wheelchair being pushed around by an asst fills my inner 'film school student' heart. Lay down dolly tracks? Bah! Don't need 'em. We're shooting this indie-style!
4:06 is so badass. I would love to have seen the full fight scene. Vader just edge-walking, full of hatred and anger, barely holding himself back from letting his anger consume him. Of course in the end, he failed to stop it from doing so.
I wouldn't mind having some of the scenes in there. As great as it showed anakin's desperation, and Obi-Wan's unwillingness to kill him, I still felt something was missing. The lava deal was a bit goofy.
Holy shit.... I never realized that about the high ground with Maul. LOL Damn good work. And saying Lucas planned it that way ahead of time is truly giving him more credit than he should. Let's just call it a lucky bonus that we created the connection to. Like Ben smiling after seeing Luke and Leia reunited because he knew they were siblings together again. We made that connection decades later. LOL
george lucas wrote the backstory of anakin, including how he lost to Obiwan since the original trilogy. there are some interviews from years before the prequels and its pretty similar to what we got.
I would pay a lot for a full alternative episode III movie with all the extra ideas they have discarted. The quality of the material they recorded but decide to cut from the original movie is insane
Now I want to see the full version. Despite it's length I think it would really add some gravity to both characters. Also Obi Wan has always been a master of the low ground. Low ground victories were Maul, Grevious and Anakin (When he flipped over him.) Even ground defeats were Dooku, Dooku rematch, Grevious (until he got the low ground advantage he was getting his ass kicked.), and Darth Vader on the death star.
If only Disney would’ve gave us more when they released the whole collection as the skywalker saga. It would’ve Been amazing to see them go back and add all the great things that were deleted due to budget ect as well as payed for the right to have the enhanced Ben v Vader duel that was put here on UA-cam… I know they truly don’t care about the fans and just want there money but dang imagine if fans truly could get what we desire. Like the entitled shits we are. Honestly am glad he kept his blue lightsaber for the duel it felt like it was a good connection to how he was having a difficult time turning fully
I like that they left the movie mistake version. I’ve always loved that intimate force choke. It expresses just how anger he has if he’s willing to watch him slowly die like that
if you ask me a lot of these ideas got reappropriated for the Kenobi show anyway. Im still happy with the finished film version of the fight, and thats normally how it goes with filmmaking, the sequence is more over stuffed at the beginning in the assembly as they are not sure how much footage they will needed so they make it longer, and trim it down till what they think is the very best bits that ends up in the 20 minutes, they make the best calls they think at the time. But yeah any ideas left on the table like i say can make it into subsequent Star Wars media so its not gone forever :) Good video, keep up the Good work! ^_^ Also, like you say the bit with the balance beam, Obi wan getting debris thrown at him was more overtop, yeah agreed but there you go its a long sequence and they probably thought do we need a funny bit in the middle to let down the tension? They don't know and its hard to say how far is too far? when they look at it all cut together they can see if its too much and they scale back abit till they feel its the right balance of things.
there is also a scene on mustafar which Anakin/Vader and obi-wan at some point of their duel had to team up one last time because they encounters an insectoid species so aggresive and fast that none of them alone could get over it so for a brief moment , they have to figth together....
Oh man, the idea of Anakin flinging lava is really pretty cool. It could've been a "Oh crap, I didn't think of that" moment for Obi Wan, but he would have been able to deflect it. However, it would also represent how Anakin, in a way, surpassed Obi Wan without a drawn out saber fight.
How could people have been disappointed by the duel? It was so good the entire film was marketed around it, and 90% of people or more say it's their favorite duel in the entire franchise. Though this is an awesome video and I think the duel would've been even better if it kept these scenes!
Excellent analysis. Beautifully said.
Agreeeeeed
Also ties in better to how Obi-Wan ended up giving Luke the blue blade.
*It’s absolutely INSANE how filthy Hayden Christensen was at dueling and memorizing fights.*

Agreed!
You're right. Some people are NEVER happy with anything.
Anakin wasn't panicky or racing, he was well timed with powerful strides, which I only really appreciated after re-watching the film.
was gonna to say the same! Love how he already is in character even when is just practicing the choreography of the fight.
If they animated the unfinished version in the clone wars style it’d sell like hot cakes

Crazy that it took society a whole generation to realize that Hayden played his part very well. Everything from the action sequences, to his acting and portraying the "angry young adult".
Yeah it honestly really is
I feel like the further away from their release...the more people get nostalgic about them.
@@buzzyb13 AGREED!!!
I think he was the strongest of all the jedi but he could not overcome his greatest opponent, himself.
That is, until he does ;)
Except Obi-Wan beat Anakin in every encounter (even the last if you think about it).

It's only after witnessing Vader's death (through the Force) that he came to believe he was wrong about Anakin, as he would have never believed it unless he saw it.

All in one simple move.
When he said that in the video my mind was blown, such an awesome thing George did there
Try jumping over him, that's a good trick!
Blah.
I’m kinda glad they didn’t show Anakin with a red lightsaber because the comic arc of Vader actually getting his red lightsaber is utterly amazing.
I never liked the idea of “hey, look, now you are a bad guy, so here, have red saber xdxd”
My thoughts exactly.
Sith are very utilitarian and don't care about their weapons color enough to waste time changing it... actually the opposite was the case and they cared so little about the color that they used synthetic crystals as they were perfect and always stable, not to mention much easier to get ahold of.(Just happened to be red because synthetic crystals are red)
... to me seems like they are trying to retroactively change lightsabers to be more "alive" and loyal like wands from Harry Potter when they were originally just a weapon. Breaking the will of a crystal is plain stupid if you ask me but to each their own, in my headcannon sith still use synthetic sabers.

The way Anakin is motivated by sheer desperation to prove himself, but also, by ENVY towards Obi Wan, his former Master.

Obi-Wan gazing into Anakin's eyes and clearly realizing that this isn't Anakin anymore would've been incredible
Yeah I wasn’t too fond of the series, but I enjoyed the finale
It’s because they tried intriguing the scene through force and revenge
That one scene where Kenobi went a lil loco with his saber was pretty neat.
At least we got that fight we’re kenobi schooled anakin
Yes. It started me down my own path of swordsmanship that I still do today.
0:05 I love how they used a wheelchair to get that moving shot 😂👍🏼
4:08 would’ve been INCREDIBLE to see on screen
I’m not late coming to Hayden’s defense. I’ve always thought that he was great and some of the fans just hated him or were jealous. I’m glad to see Hayden FINALLY getting the praise that he’s deserved for over 20 years. The man is amazing and it’s nice to see how humble and thankful he is for the fans coming to him now. ❤
I love the duel on Mustafar. I hate how people gave Hayden crap for years.
Yeah they ruined all the yeara we could’ve had Hayden as part of Star Wars.
Now he’s in his 40s and Disney continues to run the series into the ground.
@@TREVORVADER I think he's not too old, yet. I mean make-up for one and the job in Kenobi series was pretty convincing even if it was just this voice.
It was such a waste. They had the components for a much better ending fight but chose something less interesting and ultimately less impactful.
The battle was fine as it was, we like the final version, and it’s quite cool that some cut elements ended up in Kenobi. Cool.
I'm not a star wars fan but this
2:25
This bit where kenobi throws a object and anakin effortlesss deflects it and, just, starts walking SLOWLY is absolute gold.
If that was kept in the movie it would be talked about to this day.
Facts. And it’s so Vader-ish
@@StarWarsAnalystfun fact, I’m late, but it also emphasizes the arrogance that Anakin had in his ability’s, which was his ultimate downfall
Battles are not always win by power, but also by intelligence and strategy. And Obi Wan was an expert in the second one.

I'm thinking it's fire beats wood, which beats water, which beats fire.
That ridiculous deflect Anakin does behind the back around the 3 min mark is insane almost didn't notice it at first
Bruh at 2:58, I love how Hayden/Anakin so effortlessly throws his saber behind his back and blocks the strike like the timing was perfect
Your research efforts are amazing, I thought I might be one of the most obsessed fans until I've found your channel, you're just a whole different level :D keep up the good work
Glad you enjoyed!
A longer duel would have been nice (especially one that shows "his new power")... what I personally feel is needed was a longer dark side turn for Anakin. He went from "save the bad guy so I can save my wife" to "guess I have to kill everyone including kids and oh yeah my wife" with very little in the middle.
That is the partly the point: how easy it is to fall to the dark side.
This was most impressive. Half way through this movie with my kids. They haven’t seen this scene yet. I’m glad I watched this before
Can’t wait for the day I can share this masterpiece with my son 😊

I think that when watcher watches a duel between Obi Wan and Anakin with blue lightsabers he/she maybe could understand that with blue lightsaber in this duel Anakin looks like a Fallen Jedi. If Anakin had red lightsaber in the duel well that means he fully imbracing the Dark Side of the Force.
@@spider-boy5498 right. Imagine the look on Kenobis face when Anakin lit the saber hilt and it glowed a bright red. I can imagine a slump in his body and maybe uttering “oh Anakin, what did you do?”
Ever see something so great you're almost at a loss for words? That's how I felt watching this. Brilliant video, man. 👊
Really appreciate the kind words 😊
Oh yeah if that was the case, then it would have mirrored Luke vs Vader from return of the jedi
I think the whole point was they were brothers, the same, a mirror image of each other, evenly matched in power. That's why they had the same lightsaber.
Both Anakin’s and Obi-Wan’s sabers were blue in ANH, tho. But visually I agree with you.
Repent and follow Jesus my friend! Repenting doesn't mean confessing your sins to others, but to stop doing them altogether. Belief in Messiah alone is not enough to get you into heaven - Matthew 7:21-23, John 3:3, John 3:36 (ESV is the best translation for John 3:36). Contemplate how the Roman empire fulfilled the role of the beast from the sea in Revelation 13. Revelation 17 confirms that it is in fact Rome. From this we can conclude that A) Jesus is the Son of God and can predict the future or make it happen, B) The world leaders/nations/governments etc have been conspiring together for the last 3000+ years to accomplish the religion of the Israelites C) History as we know it is fake. You don't really need to speculate though because you can start a relationship with God and have proof. Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life. - Revelation 3:20
Revelation has been unfolding since Jesus died. The Popes have claimed to be equal to God and set themselves in Jesus' place (antichrist(s)). Vatican City (Which is its own nation BTW) have risen up to fulfill the role of the false prophet
Regarding the man of lawlessness or antichrist, 2 Thessalonians 2:4 says “Who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sits in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.” The restrainer that the Apostle Paul was referring to in 2 Thessalonians was the Western Roman Emperor, who held back the Popes from taking power. Once the last Western Roman Emperor was removed from power in 476 AD, the Pope was given civil and ecclesiastic authority over Rome; healing the deadly head wound of the beast in Revelation 13, as they took the Emperors title of Pontifex Maximus, leader of the church and state.
“We may according to the fullness of our power, dispose of the law and dispense above the law. Those whom the Pope of Rome doth separate, it is not a man that separates them but God. For the Pope holdeth place on earth, not simply of a man but of the true God.” (Source: “Decretals of Gregory IX,” Book 1, chapter 3.)
Pope Pius V blasphemed, “The Pope and God are the same, so he has all power in Heaven and earth.” (Source: Pope Pius V, quoted in Barclay, Cities Petrus Bertanous Chapter XXVII: 218.)
Pope Leo XIII declared, “We hold upon this earth the place of God Almighty.” (Source: Pope Leo XIII Encyclical Letter, June 20, 1894)
The antichrist sea beast of Revelation points to the office of the papacy, the Popes of Rome, who controlled the Roman beast for 1,260 years, from 538-1798 AD.
Daniel 7:25 says “And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.” The Popes of Rome spoke against Elohim and proclaimed to be God. They reigned for 1,260 years, from 538-1798 AD. during which they caused tens of millions of saints to be killed.
The Pope’s title is Vicar of Christ, which in Latin is ‘Vicarius Filii Dei’, and equates numerically to the number 666
Honestly Anakin is much stronger than Obi in the force so he shouldn't have been stalemated like that with force push
I would've loved to watch an extra 20minutes of Obiwan and Anakin just dueling it out on Mustafar. That sequence was possibly the most hype duel of the time and even now. Obi Wan Kenobi series has shown us, how much we enjoy Vader and Obiwan Duels. I hope there's another in the time between Episode 4 and Obi Wan Kenobi series
They should have done a short and shot the duel to be 10 times as long lol
It would be awesome to have just an hour of this duel as a ballet. With the music and choreography, it's basically a ballet already
...and the worst of all time. Watch Troy with Achilles' and Hector's duel for a duel that will last throughout the ages. In 20 years, people will laugh at this sorry excuse of a duel. They laughed at it when it came out and they will laugh at it again, as Holllywood's worst moments.

Hear me out. A series on the hour by hour of the duration of the night of order 66, simply titled “Order 66”. Clone wars animation style, maybe dedicate some episodes to specific Jedi defeats/escapes, such as Quinlan Vos, Shaak Ti, Cere Junda, etc., an expansion on Vader eliminating the Separatist leaders, and of course, an expansion on the battle of the heroes in clone wars animation style. I’d love to hear Matt Lanter voice some anti Jedi lines
@@KwikAsAFlash that'd be really interesting once done right.
I never understood how this movie got hate. It's so freaking incredible

Thanks for making this video. Watching Hayden work his moves in behind-the-scenes 'practice' is just incredible, especially the way he twirls his lightsaber around and blocks attacks even coming from behind him... This content just adds even more awesomeness to watching the finished film _SW III_
Anakin on Mustafar is the definition of: “Oh lawd, he comin’”
I wish this was shown more in the fight, Anakin looks as though he's fighting effortlessly. Just moving his head to the side and walking menacingly as he engages obiwan.
It also shows how the dark side affects the way he fights.

How smooth was Hayden with that matrix dodge! And at that speed, it would have beheaded almost anyone else.
The moment where he flicks off the incoming block from obi was pretty sick too.
I like how both of the times you mention Anakin is arrogant you show the “This is outrageous, it’s unfair!” scene
The only issue with Hayden's choreography is that he was too fast and had to wait on his opponent, blocking before his opponent event started the strike more than once.
he’s force sensitive, why wouldn’t he be able to do that?
Force powers allow the predict the future in combat, it's in the books and lore. Also note, some silly looking moves are designed to throw these predictions off.

I just realized something... wouldn't Anakin ACTUALLY be the first Jedi to kill a Sith (Dooku) in a millennium? Maul wasn't actually killed by Obi-Wan, not until much later.
Yes technically. But during Anakin’s Padawan years, Obi Wan probably received a lot of clout in the Jedi Temple for “killing” Maul.

It makes sense Anakin having his blue saber in the fight seeing that Obi Wan can pick it up after the fight. But I still wish he had red saber. Would have gone well with Anakin's aggressive style.
Yeah I agree
It was jaw-dropping how you addressed Nick. I'm astounded a fan would speak to him that way... Who raised you?? You do not talk to people like that.

I love your videos good to see you back also I do wish the battle was longer but this one is fine
Totally agree
I wouldn't mind having some of the scenes in there. As great as it showed anakin's desperation, and Obi-Wan's unwillingness to kill him, I still felt something was missing.
The lava deal was a bit goofy.
I watched this movie 7 times in the theater. I have never felt what I felt watching this movie with another film. Anakin was phenomenal.
Hayden is incredible here. He actually moves like a Jedi. I wonder just how many hours went into that sequence?

Holy shit.... I never realized that about the high ground with Maul. LOL Damn good work. And saying Lucas planned it that way ahead of time is truly giving him more credit than he should. Let's just call it a lucky bonus that we created the connection to. Like Ben smiling after seeing Luke and Leia reunited because he knew they were siblings together again. We made that connection decades later. LOL
I think this one was intentional tbh
george lucas wrote the backstory of anakin, including how he lost to Obiwan since the original trilogy. there are some interviews from years before the prequels and its pretty similar to what we got.
Mando leak footage m.ua-cam.com/video/hG7WYMo9OOI/v-deo.html
I would pay a lot for a full alternative episode III movie with all the extra ideas they have discarted. The quality of the material they recorded but decide to cut from the original movie is insane
Now I want to see the full version. Despite it's length I think it would really add some gravity to both characters.
Also Obi Wan has always been a master of the low ground.
Low ground victories were Maul, Grevious and Anakin (When he flipped over him.)
Even ground defeats were Dooku, Dooku rematch, Grevious (until he got the low ground advantage he was getting his ass kicked.), and Darth Vader on the death star.
Lol very true
But yeah any ideas left on the table like i say can make it into subsequent Star Wars media so its not gone forever :)
Good video, keep up the Good work! ^_^
Also, like you say the bit with the balance beam, Obi wan getting debris thrown at him was more overtop, yeah agreed but there you go its a long sequence and they probably thought do we need a funny bit in the middle to let down the tension? They don't know and its hard to say how far is too far? when they look at it all cut together they can see if its too much and they scale back abit till they feel its the right balance of things.
My man Hayden killing it here i wish they would have fully filmed this sequence.
Same.
I prefer Anakin keeping his original saber. There's something profane about two blue Jedi blades clashing. It adds to the tragedy of it all.
I love how in this it makes it feel like it’s Vader fighting not Anakin.
