But it's not just that is it? No great story or film is about the setting. It's what it says about the human spirit and this movie does it like no other. From hopeless despair to soaring rebirth. All executed flawlessly.
"I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope..." Few movies have a better closing line. An absolute masterpiece.
1994 was the year of excellent movies. I just think they don’t make movies like they did in the 90s anymore. Such masterful storytelling throughout the decade.
Oh God another "they don't make movies like X decade" comment. These will exist until the end of time. Too many people refuse to actually expose themselves to new (or old) things.
Excellent review. This is a great story written by my favorite author, Stephen King. In the novella called Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, Red is actually a red-headed Irish man. But he does symbolize the blood line of the prisoners because he was the one who could get you things.
Jake is actually a raven, which is another layer of symbolism within the film itself: Ravens are associated with mortality, but also with intelligence, communication, and knowledge; hence it is fitting that he reside in the library with Brooks, a purveyor of knowledge. In Ireland and Scandinavia, ravens were also associated with kingship, and Brooks was king of the prison in so much that he’d been there the longest and had wisdom to impart to the other inmates. When Brooks releases Jake, it symbolizes the loss of his knowledge, his importance, his ‘kingship’, so to speak. The king died and his faithful servant was released from service… … symbolic as the Viking sagas.
Easily one of my top movies of all time... You guys did it justice...thx! I feel like Hannah's emotional reactions to films are the most legit/honest out there...
Hannah got me, and had the tears rolling down my face, then immediately after, Ash had me cracking up talking about “Jake the snake” 😅 A wild ride of emotions over here I don’t think I ever experienced so quickly back to back - and I thank you both for it! You two are the best!
Exactly. If Andy had gotten released and exonerated in the first ten minutes no one in the world would give a crap. The fact he went through so much, like a modern-day Job, and still was able to not just feel hope for himself, but was able to instill it in others is what makes this movie one of the most powerful films ever made. Andy Dufresne was a quiet, kind and caring, unassuming, non-violent man whose soul could never be shattered by the savagery he was surrounded by for decades. Instead, he molded that violent world to HIS making, finding a way to bring enlightenment, joy, and most importantly HOPE to some of the most hopeless souls he could ever meet. Andy was a long-suffering angel among men. ESPECIALLY when you consider he had finished the tunnel YEARS before he escaped. The reason he held off was PRECISELY because he knew what the likely consequences would be for his fellow prisoners. For before the Warden killed Tommy (adding a blatant MURDER to his crimes) Andy probably felt if he escaped, even if he disclosed the Warden's graft, he might survive such a scandal, and would take his revenge out on all Andy's friends and associates. It was only once the Warden killed Tommy that Andy felt he might have enough to get the State Police involved and risked it.
Hannah is the sweetest most adorable person in the world! I feel like I am watching this for the first time, even though I have watched this masterpiece a hundred times. Hannah's innocence and heart never fail to amaze me. Ash always makes me laugh until I am in tears with his comments, and little clips he adds into the reaction. I almost spit my beer out when the "Daddy chill" clip popped on. Over all, I love you guys, your reactions make you one of my favorite channels. Well done you two!!!
5:56 not sure if anyone else has mentioned this, but the black guy "fishing" is Morgan Freeman's son Alfonso Freeman, it's also his picture is on the young Red's jacket when they stamp rejected.
I don’t remember if it was in the novel this movie was based on or if it was in a behind the scenes documentary, but I saw somewhere that shortly after Brooks died, either Red or Heywood found Jake (Brooks’ bird) dead in the prison courtyard. That’s the reason Brooks never saw Jake again. Like Brooks, Jake was institutionalized
19:45 At this point Ash realises how invested Hannah is on Brooks part in this story and considers what is about to happen.. 😬😁 I'm impressed again and again at how Intuitive and empathetic Hannah is. She often knows exactly what's happening before it happens.. combined with Ash's Symbolic Analogies, you both make for an entertaining reaction duo.. 💯👍
This movie really is one of the greatest. It really teaches you so many lessons and makes you want to keep fighting for your life. Whenever I watch this I think about how good many of us have it and that if we just worked a little harder and just were a bit kinder to others we’d be living better lives. Truly this and The Green Mile are my absolute favorites
You can tell a true masterpiece when the film grows over your lifetime. When you always discover a little more. When it grabs you early but still years/decades later. Maybe in a slightly different way. I think sometimes Andy is a stoic. He often offends the guards but at the same time he also helps them and so many inmates because he wants to be free in his mind. He remains the master of himself. About his feelings, expressions and words. He does not want to become an animal because of external circumstances. If you remain free in your mind, no one can imprison you. Never.
It's amazing how much DNA Shawshank shares with The Green Mile. Both are centered around a prison, both are from Stephen King, both have the same director, and there are three actors who show up in both movies.
I think the symbolisms with Jake is that he was institutionalized too. He probably died outside the walls because he didn't know how to survive on his own either. I don't know if it ever says anything about it in the book but that's always how I saw it 🤷♂️
Some symbolism you didn't mention: when Brooks was released and was leaving, the shot was looking into the prison. When Red is released and is leaving, the shot is looking to the outside. Subtle.
Hannah's reaction is so wonderful. She shows how much humanity she has in getting so emotional at the parts that are so sad. I love your channel. Ash has such a great comedic talent, and Hannah gives it right back to him. Her emotions really keeps me coming back. Great job, guys!
"Isn't it just mad that I'm feeling sorry for people who have murdered people?" That's a total BANGER of a quote!! Sums up human history quite satisfactorily!!! Anyway, you both are great entertainment! I knew Miss Hanna(h) was gonna LOSE IT for Brooks. Great reaction, cheers!!
I have said it before and I'll say it again... I just love Hannah!!! She has a heart like mine. She feels EVERYTHING so deeply and she is very intuitive about things. People like us are a rare breed! 😊
Hope and despair are opposites. It's about choosing one over the other. Brooks was ruled by fear, and gave in to despair. Red was given the same choice, and chose hope instead. Amazing.
Brooks didn't have anyone or anything else on the outside to live for especially at his age. Red still had Andy out there which gave him hope. There is a good chance Red would of ended up like Brooks if he was released prior to Andy escaping. That or committed a crime to have him sent back.
Jake the bird never came back because died like brooks... He was domesticated, didn't know how to hunt for his own food or survive without brooks. They suffered the same fate. Both relied on being confined and not being free and inevitabley could not live in the real world
First time I watched this movie, on my way back home, I was so dazed I missed my bus stop bc I simply couldn't stop thinking about it. Hannah's reactions are so pure and exactly how I felt watching that first time! Loved watching you guys, thank you!
FYI Ash, the character being named "Red" isn't symbolism because he killed somebody. This was from a book and the character was a red haired Irishman nick named Red and his comment in response to being asked why he was called that "Maybe because I'm Irish" was a nod to the book. Also the term "Uncle Sam" is an American term for the Federal Government originated from a character in military recruiting posters. There's other references that you misinterpret but not your fault as they are things that are "Americanisms". Love your channel.
A true masterpiece! ❤ And to this day, people can’t seem to believe that it’s an adaptation of a novella written by Stephen King😨 Just shows what pure storytelling can do to the human brain, gotta love that!
There's one part of the Brooks sequence that really stuck with me. When he's done carving he just stands back a bit and admires his work. The camera shot is through the little bars that he's carving on so it sorta looks like he's still in jail. He is out in the free world but he's still a prisoner. Symbolism.
When Ash was talking about how Brooks was holding onto the bar on the bus, I view that as symbolism to how institutionalized he was in prison. Cut to the scene with Red on the bus, his hands are on the bar, but they're more relaxed.
Hannah is such a sweetheart! Shes def a keeper bro! Its so good to see people with her kind of empathy! Its so rare these days.. u guys are a great couple!
You know, this was the first time I think I ever literally laughed and cried at the same time…Hannah walking off crying and Ash giving his symbolism during the Brooks bit ( with Hannah telling him to shut up off screen ) nailed me.
"I dont like it here. Im tired of being afraid all the time." Kills me every time cause thats exactly how i feel. Constant aching fear of everything around me.
Awwwwww, love Hannah. First, hair and makeup completely ON point!!! Soo adorable! But her emotions...so genuine. I have seen this movie dozens of times and I still can't handle Brook's story. Just superb filmmaking!!
I’ve seen this film so many times that I’ve become a little desensitized to it. Every once in awhile I have to stop & remember how beautiful it really is & how I felt the first time I saw it..
You two are my favorite movie reactors with all the spot-on funny commentary. I've known of this movie since it came out & everybody's said its great, but this is my first-time sort of watching it. Usually, I've seen everything that people react to but now thanks to you both I'm going to watch the entire thing.
I imagine Ash's first night in prison. The inmates are trying to get him to break by telling him horrifying stories about what's going to happen and he's just in his cell laughing his ass off at the horrible things they're saying.
I imagine that woman's first night in the joint. There's the sisters and there's the brothers. I'm guessing the brothers would be taken a liking towards her. I wish I could tell you she fought the good fight but prison is no fairytale world 🌎
Poor Hannah! I just wanted to give her a big hug when she broke down after Brooks died. What a sweetheart she is. She's the only reason I follow this channel. Ash can be a bit much to take at times but Hannah makes it all worth it. I follow her on her channel as well, too. I love her. :)
I have seen the movie dozens of times and still cry. This movie was based on a short story by Stephen King just like the Green Mile. It's so good because they followed hiscwriting so closely.
I've seen this movie a dozen times, not including a dozen or more reaction videos. This is the only one that pointed out Red's choice between buying a gun and buying a compass. Nice catch Ash.
Great work once again you two. Only on your channel, triggered by Hannah, with tears in my eyes over Brook's tragic suicide do I simultaneously burst out laughing as Ash blames the Crow! -priceless.
One of the most brilliant aspects of this film (indeed one of the best films of all time), is the emotion that it elicits from you concerning a mundane topic such as prison life. Just a masterpiece of writing and acting.
Probably the best adaptation for the screen from a Stephen King book. Ash and Hannah, you should definitely watch ''Scent Of A Woman'' when you get the chance. It is arguably Al Pacino's greatest performance and the one that earned him his only Oscar so far.
I've never met anyone who never cried after the first time they saw this movie. Also, fun fact: it didn't get noticed in theaters because it was released around the same time as Forest Gump.
Don't think Hannah would like Brooks as much if she knew what he did to get in there. I still get emotional at that scene. Just proves how amazing this movie is.
I just subscribed. And I've only seen 5 of your reactions - in the last 2 days. But they're 5 of my favorite films: It's A Wonderful Life, 12 Angry Men, Groundhog Day, The Sixth Sense, and now The Shawshank Redemption. Great heartfelt reactions, and wonderful taste! lol :)
Your reactions are so natural, your disagreements are the best. Much love from South Africa. I've watched almost all of your reactions not for the movie but just to watch you two❤❤❤❤❤
"Red" was short for "Redding", the character's last name. In the novel, he's Irish. But Freeman and Robbins were perfect in their roles. Hannah picked up (in detail) on what Andy actually did, faster than just about any first-time viewer I've seen on UA-cam. You two should review/react to Denis Villeneuve's movie "Arrival". Also some emotionally rough scenes, but a very intelligent science fiction story, full of interesting ideas.
This movie is an absolute masterpiece. From the cinematography, to the flawless acting, the perfect writing, the great music, the pacing, everything is on point. A universal tale of hope and humanity. I must have seen it at least 20 times but it just never gets old. "I guess I just miss my friend" gets me every single time, and Brooks... Plus it has one of the best payoffs in the history of cinema. What a perfect gem that movie is. Of course now you have to see The Green Mile, even though it's probably going to destroy Hannah. 😅
Haannah, you are one very sweet and compassionate lady. And Ash, you did very well to play a straight bat knowing what was going on. A wondeful reaction to a magnificent movie!
Morgan Freeman’s character was named Red in the original story because the character was Irish with red hair. When Freeman was cast in the role, just to be funny, the writer and director kept the name in there and had Morgan say he was Irish.
Malcolm X was a black civil rights activist with red hair. He hated it because it was from his Scottish grandfather when his grandmother worked his plantation.

But it's not just that is it? No great story or film is about the setting. It's what it says about the human spirit and this movie does it like no other. From hopeless despair to soaring rebirth. All executed flawlessly.
same applies to 12 Angry Men and the whole film is set in a single room, it's the characters in both films that hold you.
They wouldn't make this movie today unless there was also a Shawshank Redemption cinematic multiverse
Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump along with Shawshank. Three iconic movies
@@subliminallime4321 and theyd make andy trans.
Jake is actually a raven, which is another layer of symbolism within the film itself:
Ravens are associated with mortality, but also with intelligence, communication, and knowledge; hence it is fitting that he reside in the library with Brooks, a purveyor of knowledge.
The king died and his faithful servant was released from service…
… symbolic as the Viking sagas.
Which differs from Pacific Northwest native tradition where the Raven is the Trickster
Easily one of my top movies of all time... You guys did it justice...thx!
I feel like Hannah's emotional reactions to films are the most legit/honest out there...
Hannah got me, and had the tears rolling down my face, then immediately after, Ash had me cracking up talking about “Jake the snake” 😅
A wild ride of emotions over here I don’t think I ever experienced so quickly back to back - and I thank you both for it!
You two are the best!
Jake probably enjoyed the outside life for lil bit then came back to look for brooks not knowing he had left the prison. Jake is not a snake
@@KayeKayKno Jake was domesticated. He wasn’t cut out for the free world either. He was probably dead too before brooks ever made it to his apartment.
This film is a roller coaster of emotions, but the sadness only makes you appreciate the happiness that much more.
Hannah's such a sweetheart. Her empathy makes this so much more.
Weird she cried at every scene but the end, the sheer beauty of last 10 minutes hits me the hardest every time without fail.
So many scenes choke me up, but seeing Red smiling at the end makes me shed a tear every time.
Hannah’s out of there composing herself trying to control her emotions and Ash is just laying into Jake for being a backstabbing prick 😂
Hannah you had me and the wife crying and then Ash says something and cracks us up. love you guys :)
😂😂 Oi just don’t take relationship advice from us..love you guys
@@justtrustash 🤣
The reason this movie is so good is that (on top of the great twist) it makes you go through almost every emotion. This is a fantastic story.
Brooks (James Whitmore) was great on set. He would sit on a picnic table and talk to the extras for hours. ❤
I think the symbolisms with Jake is that he was institutionalized too. He probably died outside the walls because he didn't know how to survive on his own either. I don't know if it ever says anything about it in the book but that's always how I saw it 🤷♂️
Fucking love Hannah's constant almost spot on plot guesses, And being the dude who knows what's coming but has a straight face, Well done.
Some symbolism you didn't mention: when Brooks was released and was leaving, the shot was looking into the prison. When Red is released and is leaving, the shot is looking to the outside. Subtle.
Hannah has such a good heart. Such an entertaining reaction when she is so invested, instantly.
Genuine kudos to Ash for not spoiling this. I've seen so many reactions ruined by someone dropping little hints and stuff, but you did great
Hannah's reaction is so wonderful. She shows how much humanity she has in getting so emotional at the parts that are so sad. I love your channel. Ash has such a great comedic talent, and Hannah gives it right back to him. Her emotions really keeps me coming back. Great job, guys!
Now, no matter how many times you watch this movie, you will always get that feeling. Its a true masterpiece.
The 90's was the golden era for movies so many elite actors and great story lines.
I cried with you Hannah. This movie is so real and beautiful.
The crow monologue was exquisite 😂😂😂
Also, Ash, HOW do you keep such good poker face when Hannah is trying to get you to tell her if her guesses are right? You're amazingly good at it.👏👏👏
I really appreciate Ash knowing exactly how to help Hannah get through the emotions of Brooks.
I have said it before and I'll say it again... I just love Hannah!!! She has a heart like mine. She feels EVERYTHING so deeply and she is very intuitive about things. People like us are a rare breed! 😊
@@tdubplays8710 I am at a loss because I don't have any idea what you're talking about
How rare though? Like which percentage of the population is like that?
How rare though? Like which percentage of the population is like that?
Hannah is really smart. She usually has the movies figured out before the scene, movie, sequence is over👍🙂
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 Good job Hannah
Ikr...damn near 100%
You know, this was the first time I think I ever literally laughed and cried at the same time…Hannah walking off crying and Ash giving his symbolism during the Brooks bit ( with Hannah telling him to shut up off screen ) nailed me.
Andy & Red Brothers for life.
What a bummer if they got in a big fight while sanding that boat and Red walked all the way back to Maine or wherever.
Love watching you both! Hannah has such a good heart, she felt every emotion this movie can give someone. You’re both awesome!! Symbolisms!!! 😜
This is my all time favourite movie of all time!! Thanks for reacting Hannah you’re a sweetheart ❤
You two are my favorite movie reactors with all the spot-on funny commentary. I've known of this movie since it came out & everybody's said its great, but this is my first-time sort of watching it. Usually, I've seen everything that people react to but now thanks to you both I'm going to watch the entire thing.
I’ve seen this film loads, but watching Hannah’s reaction got me tearing up. She’s got such a big heart; that was hard to watch her deal
Andy always had hope. That’s why he was able to endure the bad things that happened and the small victories he had in prison. He never gave up hope.
I imagine Ash's first night in prison. The inmates are trying to get him to break by telling him horrifying stories about what's going to happen and he's just in his cell laughing his ass off at the horrible things they're saying.
However, let’s hope these two don’t ever end up being the subject of those ever-popular true crime videos. 😉
I love her. :)
Your Jake the Snake monologue was epic. It’s so true. LOL
Yes, I have to wonder how many people really notice how significant that choice is. What do you do with a compass? You find your direction.
Prison life is real. Whats far more mundane in my world are these super hero movies that dont mean anything
Probably the best adaptation for the screen from a Stephen King book. Ash and Hannah, you should definitely watch ''Scent Of A Woman'' when you get the chance. It is arguably Al Pacino's greatest performance and the one that earned him his only Oscar so far.
Frank Darabont is great at adapting King. He did The Mist as well.
Your girl is brilliant. Bless her heart.
I've never met anyone who never cried after the first time they saw this movie. Also, fun fact: it didn't get noticed in theaters because it was released around the same time as Forest Gump.
Finally, you guys are going to react to my favorite Steven King's adaptation
Don't think Hannah would like Brooks as much if she knew what he did to get in there. I still get emotional at that scene. Just proves how amazing this movie is.
Same thing with Del in Green mile.
There's a reason we don't find out what basically any of the other characters did to get put in prison.
what did he do?
@@MsWatcheverything read that he killed his wife and daughter after loosing a poker streak.
I'm not sure you can be black and Irish.
Brooks & Tommy deserves so much better.
They did Green Mile already
You guys are putting a smile on my face for the last couple of days. Thank you!
Also, if his last name is "Redding", they they might call him "Red" no matter what he looked like.
Malcolm X was a black civil rights activist with red hair. He hated it because it was from his Scottish grandfather when his grandmother worked his plantation.
