The highest compliment I can pay a movie is to recommend but tell them point blank that I cannot say a single word what it’s about or it will spoil something. And I to this day cannot watch Shawshank without there being tears in my eyes. There are not enough words to express the depth of affection and the amount of empathy this movie invokes. It is simply a classic that I wish I could see through fresh eyes every time. So glad you enjoyed.

18:43 I love how Andy is honestly surprised by the warden's reaction here. Andy was being factual and straightforward, but the warden heard a Machiavellian threat in his words that Andy truly hadn't intended. Often times, really smart people are unaware of how others think and feel, and they elicit reactions that are startling and incomprehensible to them because of this.

  • @SunCrushr
    @SunCrushr Рік тому +50

Andy was innocent of the crime that put him in prison. Red, on the other hand, was very much guilty. Thus, the "redemption" in The Shawshank Redemption was the redemption of Red. His hope and humanity were redeemed through his friendship and loyalty to Andy, which gave him both the ability and strength to live a well-deserved good life after prison. This is also why it makes so much sense to have him as the narrator of the story. Well, that, and Morgan Freeman's distinctive voice. It's an absolutely heartbreakingly beautiful story about the strength of friendship in the hardest of places. One of the best films of all time in my opinion.

You can see Red losing his grasp on the reality of being free with each parole hearing. He starts all buttoned up, sitting right down. The second, he sits but his shirt isn't buttoned fully. The final hearing, he's relaxed but frustrated, not buttoned fully and waits to be told to sit. Then he vents his frustrations about his regret. Explaining how he wishes he could tell himself but knows it too late.

Brooks suicide is a punch in the gut for most people. Like you said, you think it's going that way and then you see him carving his name and take a sigh of relief and then boom. Don't beat yourself up. Most people slept on it back then, when it came out. It absolutely tanked in theatres. Bad marketing, (bad title-sorry Stephen) lack of commitment by Columbia distribution. Plus, it was up against sensations like Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump, and a trend toward blockbusters. Later, home video sales/word of mouth via Warner Home Video is what finally brought it to prominence, not to mention Turner obtaining the rights, and blasting it on TNT in 1997. Hope springs eternal.

Just as a blade was able to be made that was held to someone's throat, a sharp enough edge to cut the paper could be made and used. One just has to trace out the footprint of the hammer. One won't likely cut deep enough at first, so one turns back to near the last pages that were cut, and then continue with that same shape to cut. Repeat until deep enough to fully contain it. The acquisition of the hammer is already in the movie, so I didn't bother with that part.

In the book that young kid accepts an offer from the warden to leave and go to a camp where he can spend time with his family to keep quiet. It also explains why the cement is so low quality because of the rush time in the moisture that gets inside of and makes it brittle. I did a lot of reading. I don't miss it.

It is a Steven King short story. If you read the book, you find out that Andy had already created the fake person before he went to prison. He buried the birth certificate, driver licenses, and SS card in the tin box. When he escaped, he just had to go dig it up. Then, he left a gift for Red to find. If he had gotten caught, Red would have gotten all the identification info instead. Either way, the warden wouldn't have gotten the money. He was planning his escape before he ever went to jail. The movie is awesome. One of my favorites. As usual, the book is better.

Andy was the main character, but it was Red's Redemption. Andy didn't commit a crime so there was nothing to redeem. Red did commit a horrible crime(sabotaged the brakes on his wife's car after taking out a large life insurance policy on her. Ended up killing her, the neighbor and the neighbor's child). He found this redemption at the end after Andy broke out of prison, Red finally accepted responsibility for his actions and voiced his regret/remorse, and said let's cut the bullshit to the parole board to gain his freedom and redemption.

One of the best films ever made and one of my all time favourites ever since I saw it. The velvet voice of Morgan Freeman as the narrator adds so much to the feeling of the film as well as telling the story.
Brooks' situation in seeing the outside world after so many changes reminds me of a video I saw recently. A man was taking his brother out, having just completed a lengthy sentence, and the video captures the shocked look on his face when he pays the bill at a bar using his mobile phone. It's easy to forget how fast the world is changing, never mind how much it had changed during Brooks' 50 year stretch.

Institutional environments take a while to get used to but once you do it's hard to acclimate back to civilian life. One time me and my cousin where talking about this very subject. He had been in Prison and I was in the Military, there were so many similarities it made us laughed. We got up, dressed, worked and interacted with people in the same manor and it was easy. Everyone was either on a certain level or in a higher position so you acted accordingly. Although everyone was and undividable, undividable wants and emotions didn't dictate the whole community. A stark contrast to our current outside world. When we both got out it was difficult for both of us to function without the structure we were conditioned too. Back in the day it was very common for healthy solder that gave most of their lives to military services to die shortly after retirement or go the way of Brooks. "When a man has a job to do, he tends to stay around a little longer to do it". This is true for people no matter what side of the wall you are on.

4:55 - in the original novel, Red IS a white man of Irish descent with bright red hair. The line is even funnier in the movie because he's played by a black man.
6:59 - Remember what happened last time he drank beer...
7:25 - Just to be clear, because some people miss this, just about everybody in Shawshank is guilty of what they were accused of. Most start off denying it out of habit and then continue to as part of the prison joke. Red is one of the few inmates who will openly admit what he did.
23:37 - The warden goes to prison every day.
24:27 - He wasn't planning THIS, he just took advantage of it.
25:07 - In the Book of Exodus, no less.

I don't think "planned from the beginning" is the right phrase. I think he was going to carve his name and thoughts into the wall. And that was an idle act - he was really only thinking of make rock-figurines. That was his from-first-day 'plan'. That his wall would crumble was, well, the start of a new plan. And "Rita Hayworth" was obviously very important after a calendar or two proved insufficiently sized. But even if he didn't 'plan it for 20 years', he had to use at least 19 of those.
