    Drum replacement: you’ve probably heard of this before. Whether it was in the middle of a conversation, or reading about it through an article or on famous forums out there, or in a mixing video, I’m sure you’ve heard about it. In modern productions, drums are an essential part of a mix and the foundation of a smashing sounding record; they’re more detailed, more controlled and definitely fatter.
    I’ve been implementing drum replacement (or “drum enhancement”) in my productions for a while now, especially if it was tracked in my studio. The live room in my studio is a small-to-medium room; therefore including drum samples when mixing will definitely give more options to sculpt and build that drum sound that my room does not enable me to reach, from the source.

    Hi Friends, there are several tools out there to apply drum samples such as "Trigger 2" from Steven Slate Drums. However, if you’re a CUBASE user, you’ll be glad to know that there is a tool already integrated and ready to use in CUBASE itself without any need of a third party tool. We have a very special guest today- our good friend Chris Selim of Mixdown Online! In this tutorial, Chris walks us through this CUBASE feature.

    Great tutorial! Another cool trick you can do if you only have a stereo drum loop vs. separated tracks is temporarily tweak the EQ to boost the kick and snare frequencies so that the hit-points meet the threshold to create the midi notes.

    Thank you for this video, I know it’s three years old now but this trick is new to me and I was hoping there would be a video out there on cubase. I will use this trick on live drums, but also I have some drums I recorded using finger drumming, and I rendered them in place. Now I feel they need a bit more clout, so I will use this trick. Thanks heaps 🙂.

    Thanks Warren and Chris. It was great to see this episode featured with Chris as this is my DAW of choice. And my biggest topic of recent. I have been following Chris's demonstration for replacing drums. I have also recently purchased trigger, and Auto Align. I have a question if okay: I have been replacing drums using Cubase and most recent trigger, they sound a little out. So I run them through Auto Align and they seem okay. Then I work further on my mix, and due to my PC being a little older I can only get so far through a mix before my computer is struggling, and i have to render a plugin and bounce it down. Then all my drums are out again? I have ensured my markers are set up properly but on repeated attempts the results are the same. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?
    it would be good if I can bounce auto align to my samples so i have them perfectly aligned before i mix, (but I can't work out how to do this other than mixing down to separate mono files) and i can then take them off to save on processing power before I mix, or is this something you wouldn't do?)
    the plugins I bounced to the drum tracks after auto align were preamp drive and tape emulation...
    Thanks once again for the video. Dave

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  6 років тому +2

      Hi Dave, great question for Chris? Chris? ha

    • @mixdownonline
      @mixdownonline 6 років тому +2

      Hey Dave, this is quite a problem you have here :-( I never experienced anything like this before and I never tried Auto Align yet. When you "Render in Place" or Export your track back into the Project, everything is supposed to stay in sync usually if your locators are well set up. I think bouncing these sample tracks to save computer processing is a good idea for sure. I always bounce my drum samples back in my project whether I'm using Trigger or Cubase. Now you're saying that when you bounce your sample back in Cubase your track is not aligned anymore. I suppose that the track is equally not in sync...try this, just manually align the first sample hit with the original hit, the rest of the Sample audio Event will follow so the track will be back in sync. Hope that helps!

    Good video. But One basic common fundamental requirement is missing with Cubases drum replacement options : an in built sampler browser that reads a midi part without dragging and dropping so we can easily press up and down with the arrow key in our sample packs as our song plays. This is a deal breaker for me so i use the free grace vst sampler which has an in built file browser so i can audition a folder full of snares in real time by toggling up and down with the arrow key

    • @tontaun
      @tontaun 5 років тому

      BTW I've encountered an issue that was driving me crazy! I'm using Cubase 10 Pro why the following is not shown in the above video. After clicking on the wave track you want to work on, you also have to manually select (dragging the mouse) over the area in the "Editor" that you want to convert into midi (the selected area turns into a blue colour). So the "Event Start" and "Event End" cursors are not indicators for what it will turn into midi. Seems a bit counter intuitive. However this works! This was really driving me crazy :D

    That's great, Chris. Thanks. I was specifically looking for a bit more info pertinent to Cubase. In fact Hitpoits, I recall, have been around in Cubase for years, but I don't recall it being as easy as it seems in modern versions of the DAW. I tried it once years ago. It worked, but just seemed overly complicated to pull off well. Cheers - already a subscriber to PLAP, I love Warren's channel, but I hadn't subscribed to yours, until now - seems only fair :-)

    Great stuff as usual! Questions: Why and how convert the midi into audio afterwards? Is it because we can't process midi the same way during the mixing part? And is there any particular reason to keep the empty midi tracks after dragging the event into the sample tracks? Or can we get rid of them? Thank you!

    Great video - thanks. But.... anyone else got a problem in Cubase with the MIDI events *not* being created at all? When I'm clicking OK (as in the vid at 3:19) I get a new MIDI track created OK - but there's just one single MID note created (aaaaaarrrgh!). All the hitpoint detection is working OK, I can set threshold, see the slices, play back the individual slices in 'Edit Hitpoints' (and also use the hitpoints I've created for multi-track drum quantizing OK) - its just that the MIDI note generation isnt working for me. *Sigh*. Running v10.5.20 Build 179 on Mac. Any ideas greatly received, real time burner for me at the mo :-(
