never thought id be confessing my love to an internet stranger but here we are, this is so much more efficient than the manual cut and slipping notes way, thank you!
Thanks a lot for that clear and concise video. Would be useful to have a similar video on how to "time correct" a whole-band performance (e.g. drum + bass + guitar + keys) based on a Tempo track extracted from, for example, the drum performance to retain the overall "human" feel but make the whole band tighter. May be very useful when you're only mixing and have to live with the recorded tracks you were given ...
I can't believe every single time I watch one of your video's, I discover a Cubase feature that I never heard of... My gosh, this one again! So useful! Cubase = the goat
Every Time on my Crosstrainer-Training i pick up one of these fantastic Dom (the Man) Video and i stop much more clever than i´d started my training. Thanks a lot!
Thank you for this Dom! I usually time correct drums the long hard way! Gotta LOVE Cubase! I really LOVE these types of videos! I've learned so much for you! Thank you for all you do!
DOM!!! Great video. This is a great feature. One thing I’m pulling my hair out over is finding a short Key to insert free warp hit point instead of using the mouse click. What I want to be able to do is tab to next transient using (Alt N) and insert hit point with a keyboard key so I can edit a whole drum track super fast without having to line up the curser before adding the hit point if you get what I mean? Any ideas how to do this?
Great tutorial! I noticed that while doing some noticable warps (on kick/snare), the cymbals sometimes tend to sound "modulated". It is subtle but still audible when listening in solo. Probably it will disappear in the mix but I ended up not doing too much warping when detecting this. (ofc I have the group editing and phase-coherence on)
Great vid, really useful! - Just a couple of things - You might want to mention to switch on auto hitpoint detection otherwise the curser won't snap to the drum hit. Also, you didn't mention what algorithm you were using (very important I found) I did work out you were using 'elastique Pro - Time'. After using this method I found a few drum hits went very soft on the transients and I had to go back to the cut and move method. Is there a way of not getting the snare to sound soft and fluffy on some edited hits?
dom, could you make a video about phase aligning multitrack drums in cubase? dragging it manually will make it unable to group-edit it like you did in the video. thanks a lot!
Hi Dom. Is it important to consider 96khz file recordings for this new function? Compared to the past, when a part was usually just moved around during editing, with the warp function I guess Timestretching happens. I think a workflow for this could be, record at 96khz, edit, and after the mix do the conversion at 48khz. What do you think? Thank you for your videos always passionate and very well explained!
Awesome! I´m working on a track with real drums and a real bass but they couldn´t perform together, so bass notes are also not as tight with the kick as I want them to be. I can do this with the bass accordingly, right?
Is there a shortcut that tags all the transients so you can quantize everything at once? You might need to fix a few wayward shifts, but it would be a lot faster.
If the drums werent recorded to a click am i right in thinking you work from the tempo track instead and then theres a function that will stretch the drums if you deactivate/fix the tempo?
Cubase don't snap to transients, but i activated the grid. Is there a option for this feature that i have to activate? (I mean the "mouse howering snap to transient thing" at 5:37)
Hello Dom! Always nice to see videos from you. Some are really helpful, even for a very old Cubase user. Unfortunately, I cannot update past the v10, so I was wondering if using the warp tool under the arranger window is off-limits for our version. Was a very nice approach of tighten a drum performance, due to the difficulties (at least mine lack) using the quantize setup window to do the same. Thank you!
Thanks for the tutorials Dom. The quantization works as it should, but I get an unpleasant sound like in "reverse" in some transients. Why does this happen to me? please
DOM, What about latency when using outboard gear such as compressors? I seen videos but like to have more detailed video. Keep up the excellent videos!!!
Thanks! How do you handle a situation where - lets say - bar 1 contains a fill with 16th notes, so you quantize that, but then bar 2 contains a triplet fill? If you then quantize bar 2 hitting Q, how do you prevent bar 1 from being re-quantized?
@@MrMikomi definitely still want the quantization to happen vertically across all tracks, so group editing needs to be on. Just don't want bar 1 re-quantized.
Hi Dom - how would you go about doing this for say an entire live concert that has 20-25 songs all at different tempos? Would you have to break it apart and work on each song as its own project and then somehow put them all back together again so it plays as a continuous show, or is there a way to change the tempo before each song and then grid just that song to that new tempo without affecting the others?
Cut the songs into separate clips and set tempo markers at the start of each track so that tempo changes in the previous tracks do not affect them. No need for separate project files.
What are your thoughts with the group editing way of editing drums where you set the hit points priority (kick, snare, etc) and then slice, quantize and cross fade? I do both. But the method you are explaining is cleaner looking.
@@suyashmishra6083 it is still phase coherent. Doesn’t change phase. You group and by giving priority for example to the kick. It will move the kick with the rest of the audios relative to the kick. It does not for example quantize to grid the room mic (which has a normal delay compared to the kick).
I prefer slices myself, even though this is much cleaner, I still lose some audio quality even with the phase coherent editing button enabled. I havent played around with the algorithms though, maybe "Standard - Drums" would do something nice
Please help... Am using Modo drums for midi drums , and i can't separate drums tracks in multiple mixer channels without creating loads of modo drums instances😢, which is too intense in cpu
It is features like this that make me keep wondering why producers keep using Pro Tools. Of course a producer could use this on first pass of tracks to bounce out repaired drum tracks and bring into PT for the rest of the work.
What algarhythm are you using? I switched to elastique pro time formant. i got error message Time align has has been deactivated because pitch falls outside preset range. I hit Q nothing is moved
I've NEVER heard flex time edit drums correctly in any DAW, it especially messes up room mics and overheads and leaves odd artifacts. Can you slice and edit beat detective style in Cubase?
yea, you can detect hitpoints and then open up the quantize panel and it allows you to slice then crossfade. it's pretty much beat detective at that point, but also with the option to use warping in the quantize panel
How do you set the granularity if you dont want to make it sound like a drum machine and hit on all perfect 16th but just want to tighten a little sloppy beat up a bit ?
What if, let‘s say, the snare and kick should be in sync but the drummer hits the snare a bit later. If I warp all the tracks the kick would change as well and not be on time anymore. Can you like choose only a few selected tracks before warping?
i was also thinking of this but I think in that case, the tracks would no longer be phase coherent. so I think if kick and snare are super out of sync for example then you should just do another take if you can. or you can deal with not having phase coherence, idk im not really sure how to deal with that so well / i can barely notice it tbh
hi, show me how to mix the trap bits. I buy cubase 12 pro. but I can't do anything sounds bad. help please. I don't want to be disappointed and move to a FL studio.
do you actually use this methood? cuz there is a huge issue in cubase with committing audio or bouncing audio after editing when you have the phase coherent button engaged. what happens when you take that function off regarding phase after editing? does anyone know that? cuz commiting audio with the phase coherent button engaged seems impossible. anyway cool video just curious to know if anyone knows this

Your videos, as always, very useful, BUT I NEED THIS T-SHIRT, its beautiful!!!
This is game changing. I’ve spent so much time editing and hating the result
If you listen to the edited kick you will listen stranges pre ringing or something...
unfortunately it changes the sound and the attack of the drums ... they don't sound the same as before the editing
Awesome video, Dom! Thanks so much for this.

Hi mate, I'm just starting out, do you have a video on doing techno builds, prior to a break, or as part of break leading in to the main verse??
What about live recordings with the full band? Would you group all tracks together (including guitars, bass, vocals etc.) or just the drums?
Brill gonna speed up my production big time
Thanks for the tutorials Dom. The quantization works as it should, but I get an unpleasant sound like in "reverse" in some transients. Why does this happen to me? please

DOM, What about latency when using outboard gear such as compressors? I seen videos but like to have more detailed video. Keep up the excellent videos!!!
Cubase has latency compensation - no need to do anything.
@DomSigalas what you do after all time corrections? Do you bounce, render in place or nothing? I'm asking because after bounce I hear phase issues.
I hope you will find time to answer 😊

Is there a workaround for this with Cubase Artist? Sadly Groupediting is only available with Cubase Pro :(
Does this also work on audio instruments and vocals?

Hey guys. There is no option on the folder track for phase coherent audio warp. using Cubase 11 pro. Any ideas? Thanks
