Just getting started recording songs I’ve been writing for over 50 years now. Building a studio in my basement and excited as well as a little nervous to get started ... your videos both inform and help me see how much there is to know. My 67 year old voice may need a little help and this video gives me hope.
Damn! That's some serious processing on the vocals. Sounds amazing after all of it, of course! Thanks for sharing these wonderful tricks. Much appreciated.
I had to share this video!!! Amazing that its not mostly about perfection in the recording process but capturing emotion at its purest stage and perfecting with our ears not just our eyes. Thanks!
Hi +Juan Peters Fantastic!! I really appreciate your kind words and you sharing it!! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
I love the way, to get a very natural sounding clean voice, you add LOTS of unnatural things. Sounds fantastic. I never knew a vocal track could have so much leveling applied
I'm going to have to keep coming back to this video, the most comprehensive guide on vocal mastering, we are so lucky to have you share this knowledge. Much thanks!
Au contraire mon ami, I'm living proof of that! I have a crappy voice and singing isn't my forte, but with enough plugins, automation, takes/comping, pitch correction, and general processing, I end up with passable mixes. Granted a naturally talented singer would do better in less time, but nowadays everyone can sound good. Having said that, I agree that a good vocalist's voice & performance makes all the difference between amateur and pro...
thank you, sir! i don't have all of your technical resources, but your instruction provides understanding of sound engineering which can be applied manually.
I really love this One, Your are doing such a great job, taking your time to give us so many informations that we've been looking for so many years. Thank you so much. be blessed.
How can people dislike this video?!?! This was fantastic. Jedi vocal tricks that you would never, ever learn on your own. This is experience people. Thank you good sir. :)
How have I only found your channel now? The content is rich and your personality is authentic and relatable! This is fantastic. Layering that many subtleties into a vocal track adds such a character to it. I love great tutorials and find there influence creeping in to my own work but always find it hard to apply these techniques to my strange tastes in music. If there's one question I have for you, it's how do you find your own techniques? Carve your own path? How does one do something new without feeling like they are committing a heinous mixing crime? Haha! Thanks for your fantastic channel, IL be sure to watch all your videos. Thanks, A new subscriber.
Thank you ever so much Tom! That's so unbelievable kind of you my friend! Marvellous question! Finding your own path is really about putting time into it, getting past the generic settings and starting to feel what you want to add to the Production or Mix! Time is the best thing for you to develop this!
that extra track of spiciness is pretty amazing. the fact that it provides both deep and very high sizzle elements seems to make the whole vocal altogether feel really thick and rich down low, and yet not sound lumbering or murky. amazing technique-i shall endeavour to remember it!
Wow this video is answering my question on thicker lead vocal track. Thankyou very much Warren. No wonder Mike from in the mix channel was saying you are the best on youtube about mixing and producing. i'm learning a lot from your channel! Liked
Honestly, just doing the volume automation made a huge difference to some mixing I did on a track with spoken work over music. The vocal was getting a bit muddy on some syllables, and just increasing the volume made all the difference.
I know I've said this before, but I've watched hundreds of hours of mixing videos over many years, and you are by far the first person to present production in such an organized and transparent way makes things finally 'click' for me so Thank you! And now my question :) What inserts are using for the pitch shifted tracks? I love using that vocal rider btw it's great!
Hi Derek Whitaker Wow!!! Thanks very much for your kind words I really appreciate it! That really means a lot! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
I normally don't comment on anything, but I just have to tell you that this tutorial is amazing. I'm a total beginner when it comes to mixing, but with these tips I can still make my vocals sound really decent. Thank you very much for sharing, this is amazing!
couldnt have come across this at a better time im right in the middle of mixing our new single #MyLifeMyRide and working our 4 vocal tracks. Like you i did all my volume automation first then compression and pro eq (studio one 3 pro) im blessed to have amazing singers with solid performances making the mix easier. Your videos have been a HUGE help. Your generosity in sharing your knowledge is much appreciated rock on Maestro Huart
Thanks ever so much Kineticartist! That is an extremely kind and generous comment my friend! I am so happy to be able to help!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
i love your ideas on raising the breaths, ive never tried that, i usually do a fade out automation on breaths so you still hear it but it smooths out like its disappearing, but maybe ill try this! as always love watching Warren! Keep it up! :)
Hi Kyle, thanks very much!! I will definitely experiment with ideas that create excitement for the vocal! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
omg i just spent 3 hours listening and re-listening this instruction video and then applying every plugin as you stated and tweaking each little by little. Then I heard the final mix and I was in awe. My voice never sounded so professional. Thank You so much!!
What you said about choosing takes with charisma or character when compiling is so important. Great tip! Your vocal thickening tricks really blew my mind! I have been chasing how to get that breathy sound element in a vocal for years. When you showed how you did it with morphoder i just started laughing (with joy)....brilliant!
Hi +FreddysFrets Thanks very much for your kind words I really appreciate it! So glad to be able to help!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
so do you just use the distortion, morphoder and octave on the SAME vocal but on different tracks?? Wouldn't it be better to use those elements on different lead vocals?
@@rsmith9094 The distortion, morphoder and low-pitched vocals are meant to prop the lead vocal to the forefront and give it dimensionality. Whisper vocals add character to the top end. Distorted vocals for the mid range to cut through the mix and low end to give it thickness. All of this is not used as a creative effect, but more as a mixing tool to shape the "feel" of the track.
Unlike some other UA-camr and Instagram production gurus, you are in a real studio that looks like it actually gets used for recording music!! Thanks so much for this vid, it has given me some great tips to work on my mix which I've been putting off for the last few days. Keep 'em coming!
I watched this a few years back....I just watched it again....I will watch it another time for sure! Thank you Warren! I am not a "producer" but am learning so much from your insight! And, have to add, that was an outstanding vocal performance!!
Warren Warren" you never cease to amaze me wow great thank you so much for sharing your hard work and knowledge vocals are a lot of work from beginning to end
The more of your vids I watch the more I think that your me but with a million times the knowledge on the topic at hand. Keeping/analysing the potential effectiveness of what some would consider a mistake or blemish is what keeps things sounding human and real. Ridding your music of that is robbing it of it of texture which can be the most effective tool in conveying a message. I'm just sad that I'm late to the party as most of what I'm watching here is a few years old!
Thanks ever so much! I really appreciate it! Yes, ultimately I try to do things intuitively! That is the only secret I have. So, I can imagine that makes sense to anyone else, like yourself who works like that!
I went to art college where a third of what we did was assess and critique things. In hindsight it was the best learning experience of my academic life. It wasn't just memorise "facts" and regurgitate them. We learned how to assess things and have an opinion and reasons for those opinions...not just I'm right because the back of the text book says I am! :-p
I think we should put together a best engineer award concert just for you warren, your a genius, you should come visit us in jamaica, reggae would appreciate all those skills hehe, thanks man.
Hi +Christopher G Recording Inc. Wow!! You are far too kind! I am very grateful to be able to help!! I LOVE Jamaica!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
@@Producelikeapro HAHAHAHAHAHA I think its time for me to rest my eyes and then get back to mixing instead of watching videos because I swear I just read that as "Wow You are to far!" and then the words literally moved to what it actually says HAHAHA!
@@Producelikeapro I think my ears are what has been well rested in 2020 since I'm not having high volume band practices each week (with hearing protection of course) plus going to/playing 20 plus shows. Twenty Twenty has been a year of ear preservation for sure! It has likely aided in my mixing since my ears aren't half fatigued going into a session! My mental health is a whole other story ;-p
That first vocal 'breathiness' can be more attributed to emotive situation than anything else, in my opinion. It works really well and you did the right thing to keep it. That kind of song relies on emotion and this first part of the song set the standard.
Hi Warren ... thank you sooo much for your videos. I have been home recording for thirty years, but never had the chance to watch a Pro work, so everything I learned was from learning-by-doing and from reading magazines (back in the days, when there was not Internet and UA-cam). This tutorial was eye and ear opening and I already started watching your other videos. Again, thanks ... this is very much appreciated. Michael
Hi Michael, thanks ever so much for your comment! I am with you! Everything I have learned is from doing! I wish you all the best my friend! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Very significant info, especially since I do my own vocals and want a more professional sound. I rarely use the volumn leveler as an option. I eager to try.
Hi Warren, I only found your videos a couple of weeks ago, but am loving them so far! I think you're probably my new favourite audio production channel! What are your views on normalising vocals compared with all the tedious automation? Best wishes, Ethan
Hi +Ethan Kumar Thanks very much! Glad you enjoy them! I'm a big fan of running automation and getting it right! At the moment I find there aren't any truly quick solutions on the market, so I will continue to automate the vocal! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Produce Like A Pro superb job! Love watching your channel! I learned so much and hair so much better! I learned to embrace the imperfections that make the music performances special
Only discovered your channel recently and I have to say I am learning many very practical things. I hear it slightly with all my settings turned all the way up. I don't hear it too badly but it may be because of differences in headphones or speakers.
@@dartme18 I'm using Corsair HS60 so yours are likely better, I'll have to try it with my set of Sennheiser's I got too and see if they will do the same. Mine are decent ones but I think I know what happened and why I don't hear it as well. I have a volume up and down dial on the rear of my headset and I think when taking them off my thumb hit it and I didn't notice it turned down the volume on mine about a quarter of the way down and this caused the distortion to not come through as well as you probably hear it. Thanks for the reply, helped me figure out I was doing that.
Warren, love your channel! Question - when you're first approaching the vocal, do you ever look at using clip gain and automating that before you go to volume automation? I would think that it could help since you may not have to hit the compressors so hard and you'd still have the freedom of adjusting the fader to get it to sit right without messing up what you've already done before you move on to riding the volume fader...
David Case I commented before I got too far into the track - I see not you have two vocal riders on there as well! I don't use vocal rider - does it write automation information to the track or handle it all via its own output level?
Hi David Case great question! I'm old school so I tend to use Volume Automation! Yes the Volume automation is on the main track so it hits the Lead Vocal sub evenly where most of the small increments of compression are taking place. I hope that helps? Thanks very much for your kind words I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hi David Case the Vocal Rider can be set to just do small amounts of additional volume automation, I love it, everyone I've shown it to has bought one! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

I've been producing psytrance where there is no call for much in the way of vocal's, until now when I recently put a track together for as present to someone special and laid my vocal over the top, ill be honest up until seeing this video was a nightmare to get it to sit nicely,,, So id like to say a big thank you for the wealth of information that you have passed on to us as I will be using this technique from this day forward in all my vocal tracks and I do know there will be tweaks here and there depending on the style of track and vocal but your foundation from where to begin is second to none cheers Warren.
This video is Great. i just watched it along with the Vocal thickening pitch shift trick. I'm working out of Logic. How can I use your vocal automation/ride tricks in my DAW? More specifically, how does automation differ in Logic? It appears that in ProTools you are able to layer it in levels within your chain. Also, is there a utility I already have in Logic to trim with? Thanks again.

My 67 year old voice may need a little help and this video gives me hope.
Damn! That's some serious processing on the vocals. Sounds amazing after all of it, of course! Thanks for sharing these wonderful tricks. Much appreciated.
You're very welcome my friend!!
Doesn't hurt to begin with an amazing vocalist. Great control in her voice. Thanks for the tips.
Breath is the thing I Love to hear. Like the wind across a flute or something. Pulls me in and makes me listen for the secret...
Thank you!
Butt Trumpet?
John Smith Only yours, John.
🕺🏽💨
John Smith Sounds perfect!
Much thanks!
how to get vocals to sit properly in the mix:
step 1: have good vocals to begin with
right... haha
Very true Saint James!!
@@inspirepaulreacts3963 yes, indeed!
Providing a professional stuff free is a hard thing! I must appreciate ❤️
Thanks ever so much
thank you, sir! i don't have all of your technical resources, but your instruction provides understanding of sound engineering which can be applied manually.
Wow! Thanks ever so much
Morphoder whisper for air is a sneaky one!! I like that Warren!
Hi Chris great! Glad you enjoyed that trick! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren
I really love this One, Your are doing such a great job, taking your time to give us so many informations that we've been looking for so many years. Thank you so much. be blessed.
Hi Israel, thanks very much for your kind words! I'm so glad to be able to help! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Thanks,
A new subscriber.
Thank you ever so much Tom! That's so unbelievable kind of you my friend! Marvellous question! Finding your own path is really about putting time into it, getting past the generic settings and starting to feel what you want to add to the Production or Mix! Time is the best thing for you to develop this!
Finally! I've struggled with vox a lot, Warren once again proves that simplicity does the trick, literally!
that extra track of spiciness is pretty amazing. the fact that it provides both deep and very high sizzle elements seems to make the whole vocal altogether feel really thick and rich down low, and yet not sound lumbering or murky. amazing technique-i shall endeavour to remember it!
Wow this video is answering my question on thicker lead vocal track. Thankyou very much Warren. No wonder Mike from in the mix channel was saying you are the best on youtube about mixing and producing. i'm learning a lot from your channel! Liked
Hi Hoan, I'm so so glad to be able to help! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
you're very welcome Sir!
Honestly, just doing the volume automation made a huge difference to some mixing I did on a track with spoken work over music. The vocal was getting a bit muddy on some syllables, and just increasing the volume made all the difference.
Fantastic! Thanks ever so much
I know I've said this before, but I've watched hundreds of hours of mixing videos over many years, and you are by far the first person to present production in such an organized and transparent way makes things finally 'click' for me so Thank you! And now my question :) What inserts are using for the pitch shifted tracks? I love using that vocal rider btw it's great!
Derek Whitaker PS. I listened to this album last night. Phenomenal!
Hi Derek Whitaker Wow!!! Thanks very much for your kind words I really appreciate it! That really means a lot! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hi Derek Whitaker glad you enjoyed the album!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
you have no idea how much this has helped me! The morphoder thing just blew me away! thank you so much!
Fantastic!! So glad to be able to help! Have a marvellous new year!!
I normally don't comment on anything, but I just have to tell you that this tutorial is amazing. I'm a total beginner when it comes to mixing, but with these tips I can still make my vocals sound really decent. Thank you very much for sharing, this is amazing!
Thanks ever so much my friend! That really means a lot!!
I often silence the breaths but I get your point of charisma here completly and Its cool to see that you do that volumeautomation also.
Hi Dante, definitely! I agree! It's all about what's best for the song! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
I leave the breaths. Vox are alive an breathing into the song life. Gotta leave some breathing.
couldnt have come across this at a better time im right in the middle of mixing our new single #MyLifeMyRide and working our 4 vocal tracks.
Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
just thanks for sharing EVERYTHING with us Warren!
Hi ***** thanks!! Yes I really want help and be able to share and learn from everyone! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
i love your ideas on raising the breaths, ive never tried that, i usually do a fade out automation on breaths so you still hear it but it smooths out like its disappearing, but maybe ill try this!
as always love watching Warren!
Keep it up!
Wow! Thanks ever so much Fernando! That's amazing to hear!
This is why I love UA-cam; 6 years later found this evergreen tutorial. Who needs school?
Thanks ever so much
What you said about choosing takes with charisma or character when compiling is so important.
Good shit, great teaching style. Everything here I've either learned the hard way or am TOTALLY about to start trying.
Thanks ever so much Will!
Unlike some other UA-camr and Instagram production gurus, you are in a real studio that looks like it actually gets used for recording music!! Thanks so much for this vid, it has given me some great tips to work on my mix which I've been putting off for the last few days. Keep 'em coming!
Thanks ever so much! That really means a lot!
I watched this a few years back....I just watched it again....I will watch it another time for sure! Thank you Warren! I am not a "producer" but am learning so much from your insight! And, have to add, that was an outstanding vocal performance!!
Hi Bob Wirth thanks ever so much for your very kind words!! I am so happy to help!
Only one word, AWESOME!
Hi +irecki1 Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Warren Warren" you never cease to amaze me wow great thank you so much for sharing your hard work and knowledge vocals are a lot of work from beginning to end
Wow! Thanks ever so much Edward!
That's fantastic! I'm glad that kind of learning exists! Creative thinking is sorely missed in many situations! Which Art College did you go to?
Sheridan College in Ontario. Art Fundamentals followed by Illustration.
Warren, you are such a great guy....always willing to share, the planet needs more people like you! Warm regards from Brazil!
I never thought off adding sub and whisper for depth, subtlety and energy! Wow! Excited to work with this! Thank you

@@Producelikeapro HAHAHAHAHAHA I think its time for me to rest my eyes and then get back to mixing instead of watching videos because I swear I just read that as "Wow You are to far!" and then the words literally moved to what it actually says HAHAHA!
@@TheSickNeeds yes! Sometimes we just have to rest our eyes and just use our ears!
Great video...I will definitely try these techniques! Thank you so much!
Hi +schnowtza Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

Once again amazing video, thank you! The Morphoder tip is great.
You’re very welcome!
As a live player, this is eye-opening. I would never have thought to approach vocals like this.
Thanks ever so much!
Hi Warren, I only found your videos a couple of weeks ago, but am loving them so far! I think you're probably my new favourite audio production channel!
What are your views on normalising vocals compared with all the tedious automation?
Best wishes,
Ethan
Hi +Ethan Kumar Thanks very much! Glad you enjoy them! I'm a big fan of running automation and getting it right! At the moment I find there aren't any truly quick solutions on the market, so I will continue to automate the vocal! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Love the “pre-active” mixing
Glad you like it!
Produce Like A Pro superb job! Love watching your channel! I learned so much and hair so much better! I learned to embrace the imperfections that make the music performances special
Such great ideas here ... thanks for the inspiration for my next mixes!

Only discovered your channel recently and I have to say I am learning many very practical things. You treat us like we know what we are doing but, like everyone, still have more to learn and areas we can improve. It’s early days incorporating your suggestions and I’m already hearing improvements in my work. THANKS!
Hello Warren. I'm an aspiring producer and engineer. Just wanna let you know that your videos are helping me a lot in learning everything I need for the career that I wanna get into. You, sir, are awesome. Thanks a lot!

I'm getting distortion when the ensemble sounds. All the vocal work leading up to it was great, but at 15:23, I hear clipping :(
me too. a lot of it actually
Peep the vocal track. Its rly hot haha
I hear it slightly with all my settings turned all the way up. I don't hear it too badly but it may be because of differences in headphones or speakers.
@@evilcowboy I'm using HD 280 pro (over-ear monitors). They don't do the music any favors at all :-P What are you using?
Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

is the voice recorded already equalized with the hardware? it sounds good already at the start.
Hi Francesco, no, I don't use any EQ when recording vocals!
Another great tutorial. A perplexity: I thought one would use a vocal rider to avoid having to do meticulous automation.
Nothing beats detailed work you do yourself! Thanks ever so much my friend!!
@@Producelikeapro Indeed, that's why I've never considered getting a vocal rider. Thanks for you concise, instructive videos!

Hi Noah, thanks for your wonderful comment! I don't mix in Logic, I do use it for keys etc, but not mixing, so I haven't gone as in depth on those things. Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

As someone who qualified in Audio Engineering in 1987, I find automation to be an amazing thing! I was taught to map out the song and make any changes while bouncing down tracks, and in the final mix too of course. Nowadays you don't need to be an octopus to pull off a sophisticated mix!
